WORD FROM OUR CITY MANAGER

Dear Emeryville Community,

Summer in Emeryville is one of my favorite times of the year. The days are longer, our parks are livelier, and our community comes together in ways that truly reflect who we are vibrant, diverse, innovative, and deeply connected.

As your City Manager, I am proud of the work our team does every day to ensure that Emeryville remains a place where people of all ages can live, learn, work, and play. Our Summer Activity Guide is more than a list of programs; it is a reflection of our community values in action

At the City of Emeryville, we are guided by our commitment to a Livable, Safe and Vibrant Community These values shape how we deliver services, design programs, and create opportunities for connection Whether it’s youth camps that spark creativity, senior activities that build friendships, cultural events that celebrate our diversity, or wellness programs that strengthen body and mind, every offering is rooted in the belief that everyone belongs here

This year, we continue to invest in programs that build meaningful connections across generations and backgrounds From community events and recreational leagues to educational enrichment and neighborhood gatherings, we are intentional about creating spaces where relationships grow and memories are made Strong communities don’t happen by accident , they are built through participation, partnership, and shared experiences.

Our dedicated City staff work collaboratively across departments to ensure that this guide reflects both our Strategic Plan priorities and the everyday needs of our residents. While the Strategic Plan sets our direction, it is the energy of our community that brings it to life. I am incredibly proud of our team for balancing innovation with compassion, and for serving with professionalism and heart.

I also want to thank our Mayor and City Council for their leadership and partnership Their vision and policy direction allow us to continue expanding programs, enhancing facilities, and delivering high-quality services that enrich daily life in Emeryville

As we look ahead to a season of sunshine and activity, I invite you to try something new, reconnect with a neighbor, volunteer, attend an event, or enroll in a class that sparks your curiosity

After all, community is not just where we live, it’s how we live together Here’s to a summer filled with connection, joy, and possibility

If asked to, I couldn’t select a favorite memory or moment because there are too many to count. I think what I love most is not the activities, field trips or even all the events. It is seeing your children grow up and become thoughtful and caring young people. EMERYVILLE

A SMALL CITY WITH A BIG STORY

Coastal People

These new arrivals occupied the area for another 1,200 years until the arrival of the Spanish in the 18thcentury The Spanish referred to them as Costeños, or "coastal people," which was later Anglicized to Costanoan Today, the preferred name for these indigenous people is Ohlone, although that term might have originally derived from a Spanish rancho called Oljon, and referred to a single band that inhabited thePacificCoastnear Pescadero Creek on theSan FranciscoPeninsula Rather than a single tribe, the Costanoan or Ohlone people were actually a language group of approximately 50 different nations or tribes with about 50 to 500 members each and an average of 200, who inhabited the area from San Francisco Bay to the Big Sur coast prior to Spanish settlement of the area.

The Ohlone sub-group that occupied the East Bay west of Mount Diablo was known as the Chochenyo. Since the terms "Costanoan" and "Ohlone" are both of Spanish origin, it has been

suggested that a more appropriate name for the indigenous people of the East Bay might be "Muwekma," which means "the people" in the Chochenyo language

The Ohlone subsisted mainly as hunter-gatherers and harvesters They inhabited fixed village locations, moving temporarily to gather seasonal foodstuffs like acorns and berries Cultural arts included basket-weaving, seasonal ceremonial dancing events, female tattoos, ear and nose piercings, and other ornamentation The Ohlone villages interacted through trade, intermarriage and ceremonial events, as well as some conflict

Disruption of the Indigenous Culture

Spain claimed what is now California and began to build a network of religious outposts, arriving in Ohlone territory in 1769 Spanish mission culture soon disrupted and undermined the Ohlone social structures and way of life Spanish Franciscans erected 7 missions inside the Ohlone region and brought most of the Ohlone into these missions to live and work The Chochenyos of the East

Bay moved en masse to Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1776 in San Francisco, and Mission San José founded in 1797 in what is now the City of Fremont.

Most were baptized and were educated to be Catholic "neophytes," or "Mission Indians," until the missions were discontinued by the Mexican Government in 1834. Then the people found themselves landless. A large majority of the Chochenyo died from disease in the missions shortly thereafter. The speech of the last 2 native speakers of Chochenyo was documented in the 1920s. Today, the Chochenyo have joined with the other San Francisco Bay Area Ohlone people under the name of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and are currently petitioning for U S federal recognition

In November 2000, Alameda County voters Measure B, a 0.5% sales tax, to deliver transportation improvement and services. In November 2014, voters approved Measure BB which provided a 30year extension of the 0.5% sales tax and added an additional 0.5%.

In 1990, AB 2766 was signed into law. This bill authorizes the California Department of Motor Vehicles to impose a $4 vehicle registration fee on cars and trucks registered within the Bay Area Air District (BAAD) This fee supports the Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA), which funds transportation projects that reduce motor vehicle emissions Approximately $1 8 million in TFCA funding is distributed annually, with 60% of the funds awarded to BAAD through the TFCA Regional Fund and the remaining 40% passed on to the Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC) ACTC then distributes this funding to cities TFCA funding has supported key projects across Emeryville such as:

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH TEXTILE WASTE?

DOESN’T FIT IN YOUR TRASH CAR NO PROBLEM!

Only 15% of used clothes, sheets, and towels are actually recycled; the other 85% heads straight to the landfill, where they release toxic chemicals and microplastics into our environment.

To help cut down on textiles in the landfill, you can reuse or restore old clothing. Check out the link below for directions on how to turn an old t-shirt into a shopping bag!

LOSE THE BAG, FREE YOUR RECYCLABLES!

Plastic bags might seem handy, but they actually pose significant recycling challenges When you bag your recyclables in plastic, it makes it harder to transform cans, bottles, and paper into awesome new stuff If you collect recyclables in a bag, empty them directly into your cart and reuse or throw the bag in the trash.

Recyclables must be loose to make their way through sorting equipment. This is because plastic bags and plastic films get wrapped around equipment at the facility, making the process time-consuming and dangerous for facility staff

Plastic bags contaminate recyclables, making it impossible to give these materials a second life

Pet Summer Safety Guide

If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet. Keep your pets safe this Summer

NEVER LEAVE PETS IN HOT CARS

The inside of a car can become deadly within minutes on a warm day — even with windows cracked. Pets cannot cool as effectively as humans, so heatstroke can happen fast.

TIPS FOR KEEPING PETS COOL

Always provide fresh, cool water throughout the day

Give pets access to shaded areas — inside or outdoors.

Exercise pets early mornings or late evenings when it’s cooler.

Avoid midday walks on hot pavement that can burn paw pads

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE

Excessive panting

Drooling

Weakness or lethargy

Bright red gums
