LITTLE DANCERS (Ages 4-6) Awaken your little dancer to music, ballet, and the use of their feet to create rhythmic patterns and beats with tap. They’ll develop rhythm, basic musicality, and coordination as they improve their motor skills. This class provides a great introduction to two popular forms of dance in a fun-filled atmosphere! Your child will learn ballet steps, tap combinations, use props, and learn terminology while dancing to energizing music. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start date. PEEWEE KARATE (Ages 3-4) This program is for three to four year olds and it is specifically designed to match their stages of development. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start date. LIL’ TIGERS (Ages 5-6) Help your “little tiger” channel their energy and have fun! This class is expressly designed for five and six-year old children and their love of creativity and problem solving. KARATE TIGERS (Ages 7-9) Seven to nine-year-olds are what most people consider “the golden age.” This is the time in their lives when their vocabulary and problem-solving skills are growing quickly. Let’s G.O. (Get Outside)!

Parks and Natural Areas

Grab your family and friends and visit a local park, river, or any natural outdoor area and explore what it has to offer! Let’s get up and “Let’s G.O.!” The goal of this national program taking place in April is to bring together intergenerational groups of people to get outside together, to be active, have fun, and connect with nature. This month-long campaign is brought to you by Children & Nature Network and Albany Parks & Recreation. Looking for a great way to get started? Check out the free activities listed below and “Let’s Go!” Pets, Pals, and Paths: April 6 Bring along your four-legged friend as we explore the Takena Landing Trail. This is a soft surface path that runs along the north side of the Willamette River. The trail starts at the boat landing and heads to the east. As you travel down the trail the sounds of the city gradually give way to the rhythmic sounds of the river. The end of the trail loops back and allows you to return the way you came. Distance: 1.5 miles each way. Dogs must be on leashes. The first 55 dogs will receive a goodie bag with an Albany Parks and Recreation bandana. Join our guides from 10:30 a.m.-noon and learn how this unique project is progressing. We will board the bus at Carino’s Italian Restaurant for a free trip to Talking Waters Gardens. Exploring Outdoors… One Step at a Time Walking alone is never as much fun as walking with others! The Silver Striders walk two times a week on the trails, paths, and sidewalks of Albany. Why not join them? This group is sponsored by Albany Parks & Recreation. It started out as a handful of retired individuals who wanted to walk. It’s now grown into almost 40 people who love spending time together outdoors keeping active and fit. What if you can’t walk very far? What if your pace is slowing everyone down?? No worries! This group will accommodate your needs. They have been known to modify their walk to make sure everyone can participate. Helen & Terry McGovern, and their dog Ben, have been leading the group since the spring of 2010. They Albany Parks & Recreation Spring 2013 Activity Guide

LATOURELL FALLS HIKE (GORGE) Latourell Falls is the closest of the Columbia Gorge waterfalls to Portland. It’s just barely visible from the highway, but a short jaunt up a steep paved path leads to a clear viewpoint. A walk down a different path leads to the base of the falls. Latourell Falls, a 249’ plunge, is beautiful in all seasons. In the summer, the water flow is very low, creating near misty conditions. The most interesting hike is a 2.4 mile loop visiting Latourell Falls, Upper Latourell Falls, and Guy Talbot Park. If time permits we will make a stop at Multnomah Falls. Difficulty level: Moderate. Length: 2.4 miles. Elevation gain: 520 feet. Please bring a daypack, water, and a sack lunch. Fee includes transportation only. Departs: MV-7:45am/Sr.Ctr. 8am/Carino’s-8:15am Tuesday, June 4 7:45am-6pm $22/$29

WILLIAM L. FINLEY HIKE (BENTON COUNTY) Explore several easy hiking trails in Benton County when you join us for a day of scenery, birding, and more! We will hike the Woodpecker Loop Trail. Yep you guessed it… there are a lot of birds and you might even see a woodpecker on this loop. We will also make the Mill Hill Loop, an easy hike through a forest of oak woodland, mature maple, and Douglas fir. We’ll walk the Homer Campbell Memorial Boardwalk which is an easy hike on the wooden boardwalk to an observation blind overlooking Cabell Marsh. The longest of these hikes is 2.6 miles. Please bring a daypack, water, and a sack lunch. Fee includes transportation only. Departs: MV-9am/Sr.Ctr. 9:15am/Carino’s-9:30am Friday, May 31 9am-5pm $19/$25

BEAZELL MEMORIAL FOREST HIKE (BENTON COUNTY) This trail is perfect for all abilities as you pick the distance that best meets your needs. Enjoy a short hike through a habitat for birds, a medium hike up a canyon along Plunkett Creek, or be adventurous and take a longer hike up the hill to a meadow viewpoint. We will stop at the Plunkett House which was built in 1875. Difficulty level: Easy. Length: 3.5 miles. Please bring a daypack, water, and a sack lunch. Fee includes transportation only. MOVIE MATINEE - ARGO Based on true events, ARGO chronicles the life-ordeath covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. The truth of this event was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. This plan is so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. Do you remember when this event happened? Did you follow it on the news? Come see the movie that has received rave reviews from critics and viewers alike. This free movie matinee is scheduled for Friday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Albany Senior Center.
