Bank branch bulldozed to make way for Checkers at Archer and Narragansett

The story and the photo are courtesy of swchicagopost.com The rumors of a Checkers fast-food restaurant being built on the southwest corner of Archer and Narragansett, first reported nearly a year ago by the Southwest Chicago Post and which were initially denied by a Checkers spokesman, are turning out to be true, as heavy equipment operators this week starting tearing down the long-shuttered MB Bank building. In an interview with the Southwest Chicago Post, Jennifer Durham - Vice President of Franchise Development for Checkers and Rally's Restaurants -- confirmed that construction will begin within weeks, just after

demolition is complete. A new Checkers restaurant is expected to open at the site in August, she added. Durham said that the company acquired the site as part of a "bangup deal" and added that the new Checkers will meet "unmet consumer demand" in the area. The new restaurant will be owned and operated by the company and not franchised, she noted. It is expected to employ 20-30 people, most of whom will work parttime. She said that the company is committed to hiring locally, and that people interested in working at that location should apply online now at checkerscareers.com. The new restaurant will focus on drive-through service and will not have

Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings and solicitations (always get that wrong, I mean salutations) fine readers! I think that Toots shall make a “Bucket List”. They are a good thing to have and to work off of. It’s from the movie “Bucket List” which stars Jack Nicholson (Toots’ hero-oh my!) and Morgan Freeman. The dynamic duo star as two terminally ill patients who decide to break out of the hospital and live their days to the fullest. Edward Cole (Nicholson) is a billionaire who is sharing a hospital room with a blue-collar mechanic Carter Chambers (Freeman). Their talks gradually reveal that both men have a long list of goals they wish to accomplish before they kick the bucket. So they make a run for it and do their best to fit a lifetime

of fun into their remaining days. At the site of the Great Pyramid, Mr. Chambers explains to Cole what the Egyptians believe “There are two questions to be asked of you when you get to heaven’s gates -- first, have you found your joy? And second, has your life brought joy to someone else?” I won’t go any further -so as not to spoil it for you. Have a box of Kleenex handy - you’ll need it. I highly recommend this movie. No Madame Editor, I am not trying to be a movie critic. I am simply trying to put forth my “lesson” of the week - if you would be so kind as to allow me. Back off Bugaloo! These poor guys had less than six months to mark off all the things they had on their “Bucket List”. That’s why Toots

Sidewalk Sale this Saturday wants to start now. My list is quite long and I only have another 45-50 good years left. Yes Madame Editor, the “lesson” is forthcoming. For all of you out there when you get to heaven’s gates, how will you answer the two questions? I fully intend to answer with a big, resounding YES! Yes to both!! Yes, I have found my joy and yes, I have brought joy to someone else - to many in fact. Why everyone that knows Toots will experience joy. I am carried away - another one of those “legends in my own mind” sort of thing. Next week Toots will come in as a “roaring lion” - in other words she will be the usual “literary genius”. Affirmative Madame Editor, I am carried away - so very easily! ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Traveling Down The Alley by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh I believe I’ve found the answer About what we can do To avoid hitting those potholes And causing damage too. You’ve read the poem I wrote Pot Holes Getting Bigger You’ve also read Pot Hole City So then I began to figure Our cars are getting damaged And it is costing us money When they break our tire rods Some may think it’s funny. But we have our bills to pay And times are getting hard The other day I hit some holes I had to use my credit card.

St. Laurence celebrates Viking Quest Week

Music Corner by Ken Qualter

More Deaths Of Note Yes, more. The Grim Reaper has been busy when I wasn’t paying attention. Some of these musicians are personal favorites of mine like Paco de Lucia. Others, like Ray Still, are Chicagoans who have enriched our lives right here. And still others, like Joe Lala, are the nameless people behind the stars who helped make their music sound so good. I appreciate the opportunity to acknowledge their lives and contributions. On 4/1, jazz pianist Walter “King” Fleming died. Born in Chicago on 5/4/22, he played trombone in the McKinley High School Band. He studied at the Midwest College of Music. After serving in the Army from 1943-45, Fleming

moved to Los Angeles to do session work. But he soon moved back to Chicago and formed the King Fleming Four. He remained active on the local scene, performing and recording here for decades. Fleming died in a retirement home in Manteno at age 91. Bluegrass musician, songwriter, producer, manager Arthur Smith passed away on 4/3. Born to a musical family in South Carolina he played guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and accordion. He hosted numerous country music radio shows and had the first nationally syndicated country TV show. In 1955 he wrote an instrumental called “Feudin’ Banjos”. The song was included in the 1972 movie “Deliver-

ance” as “Dueling Banjos”. No credit was given to Smith. He won the ensuing lawsuit and earned a Grammy for the song. Smith wrote nearly 500 songs, including 2 million-sellers, recorded by the likes of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Glen Campbell, Roy Orbison, and Chet Atkins, among others. He was 93. On 4/7, bluegrass musician George Schuffler died. He was born in North Carolina on 4/15/25. Schuffler began teaching himself guitar at the age of 12. He was instrumental at developing the cross-picking technique and helped turn guitar into a lead instrument in bluegrass bands. Schuffler played with the Bailey Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, and the Clinch Mountain Boys. He was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2011. Mr. Schuffler was 88. www.KenQualter.com

St. Laurence students participated in Viking Quest Week recently, which included a variety of speakers and culminated in a Team of Teams competition called Igor’s Challenge. Rich Panico ’69 kicked off the week reminding everyone of the importance of vision and knowing where you’re going. Nathan Kipnis talked about his experience in the architecture industry as it relates to problem solving, and Mark Wollschlaeger highlighted the positive aspects of a STEM curriculum. During the Igor Challenge, each team of students created a ship from limited materials and then tested it in a competition, which gave them the opportunity to use creativity and problem-solving skills they have learned through the StL STEM curriculum. The final assembly also recognized students, faculty, and staff who are emblematic leaders at St. Laurence. Pictured: Alumnus Rich Panico ’69 spoke to the student body to kick off the week.

Chicago man charged in child pornography case

Bond was set for a Chicago man charged with possessing child pornography after investigators discovered that he had downloaded numerous videos to his home computer, according to the Office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. Jose Munoz, 26, of the 4700 block of South Keeler Ave., is charged with one Felony count of Child Pornography/ Possession following an investigation by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Chicago Police Department. According to prosecutors, authorities initiated an investigation after becoming aware that the defendant was downloading child pornography via a file sharing program. The investigation revealed that from March 3, 2014 through March 25, 2014, Munoz

searched for and downloaded videos containing child pornography, which he also made available for sharing. Investigators executed a search warrant at Munoz’s home, during which they seized Munoz’s laptop computer. A forensic review of the computer revealed more than 200 videos files of children under the age of 13 depicted in acts of sexual conduct and sexual penetration. Munoz was arrested on May 6th and he appeared in bond court Wednesday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building in Chicago where Judge Donald Panarese set his bond at $100,000. Munoz’s next court date is May 27. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office administers the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which investigates and prosecutes criminal acts such as child pornography, sexual solicitation of a child

Warrants executed for illegal cigarettes sales

Chicago Police Officers arrested two men after executing two search warrants for possessing and selling illegal cigarettes at a gas station in the 3800 Block of W. Roosevelt Rd. Officers recovered 3,790 packs of illegal cigarettes from Missouri and Illinois and $287,778 in cash. The investigation was initiated in response to a tip that cigarettes were being sold over the counter at a gas station without the appropriate IL. State and Cook County tax stamps. Several officers from the Intelligence Section, Asset Forfeiture, the Illinois Department of Revenue, and the Chicago Department of Business and Consumer Affairs collaborated their efforts to begin this investigation. Intelligence Officers made

numerous purchases from the gas station and verified the cigarettes did not have Cook County tax stamps affixed and multiple packs had Missouri state tax stamps. Officers were able to determine through surveillance, that the cigarettes were being transported to the store by Nasser Abdullah, who was storing large quantities of cigarettes in his garage and transporting them. During the surveillance, officers observed Abdullah load a large quantity of cigarettes from his garage in the 9100 Block of Beloit, Bridgeview, IL into his vehicle. Officers were able to recover those illegal cigarettes and arrest Nasser Abdullah. Search warrants were then executed on both his garage and the gas station

Editors Mailbag… Dear Editor, You’re heading for a free American people! A people that believe in God and follow the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of America! Millions of us have taken the oath to follow our Constitution and defend it from our foreign enemy and domestic ones. Our representatives have taken the same oath, but do not follow it, they pass laws that do not benefit a free society,

but a slave society. A few examples in my opinion are: seat belts are safe when worn when needed, deadly when not needed. Motorcycle helmets are beneficial when needed, deadly when not needed. Guns, rifles, bows and arrows, knives, and swords are all lifesaving when used properly, but deadly when not used properly. Presently our representatives are passing laws that are bankrupting us. Also, I believe they are

in the 3800 block of W. Roosevelt Rd. Throughout the duration of this investigation, officers recovered $287,778 in cash and 3,790 packs of cigarettes without the proper tax stamps. Nasser Abdullah, 33, from the 9100 Block of Beloit, Bridgeview, IL, was charged with one felony count of Possession of >1000 Packs of Contraband Cigarettes and potential Business Licensing Fines, totaling nearly $1,896,500. Abdullah appeared in Central Bond Court earlier today. Also arrested was a co-worker, Quaiti ALI, 22, from the 7700 block of W 82nd Pl, Bridgeview, IL. Abdullah was charged with municipal ordinance- No Cigarette Tax Stamp and will appear in Branch 44 on May 29, 2014. allowing us to put our families in extreme danger by using signs and sayings that only benefit criminals and such, but do nothing to protect us, the free American People - we the people that came here legally. Mother McAuley Science Bowl team competes in National Science Bowl

Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School proudly sent their Science Bowl Team to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. from April 24 – 28. Tiffany Anderson ‘14 (Morgan Park), Siobhan Bennett ‘14 (Palos Park), Rayn Davis ‘14 (Wrightwood), Sarah Dynia ‘15 (West Elsdon), Montana Ford ‘14 (West Pullman), Julianna Magnan ‘15 (Orland Park), Jessica Marchetti ‘15 (Garfield Ridge) and Diana Sanchez ‘14 (Blue Island) made up the eight-person Mighty Mac team, which was one of two high school teams from Illinois to qualify for the national championship. Even more impressive, however, is the fact that they were the only allgirls team to compete at nationals. The trip to Washington, D.C. was an all-expensive paid trip awarded to the students and their two coaches Dr. Roz Iasillo, McAuley’s S.T.E.M. Coordinator, and Dr. Tom Juliano, McAuley faculty member, for winning the Regional Science Bowl on February 22. While in Washington, D.C., they had a wide range of learning opportunities, including a tour of the national monuments, Science Day seminars, Advanced Placement test review sessions for all AP science and math courses, a visit to the National Mall and a listening to keynote speaker, Dr. Ernest J. Moniz, U.S. Secretary of Energy. “I am impressed by the science and math knowledge that our girls possess,” said Dr. Roz. “I am so proud of their ability

to calmly process very difficult questions and calculate ‎complex problems. As a firm believer in the advantages afforded girls attending all girl schools, I was pleased to see those advantages in action.” On Friday afternoon, the girls participated in a Team Challenge Competition as a friendly practice session for the real competition on Sunday. The National Science Bowl consisted of 11 round robin question and answer sessions covering topics of general science, biology, chemistry, physics, math, astronomy, earth science and computer science. At the end of the first round of round robin, a double elimination session began. The Mighty Macs did not advance, however, their efforts have not gone unnoticed. On Monday, May 5, Congressman Daniel Lipinski visited McAuley to recognize the team and celebrate their accomplishments. They also will be honored with a resolution from the Cook County Board at their next circuit meeting, and the state of Illinois is pre-

paring a proclamation for the team to honor them as one of two Illinois high school teams to qualify for the National Science Bowl, and as the only all-girls team from across the country. “Our McAuley team more than held their own,” said Dr. Roz. “This experience of competing at the national finals will help us prepare for future competition.  These girls are strong, intelligent, determined, confident young women of impeccable character. I am very proud to have been their coach.”  The success of this academic team speaks to both the knowledge and skills students receive from Mother McAuley in math and science, as well as the students’ strong interest and confidence in the two subjects. At McAuley, girls are encouraged to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (S.T.E.M.) and are instilled with the knowledge that they can achieve their goals. In response to this interest, the changing workforce and the school’s mission, McAuley has taken

Congress urged to crack down on misuse of antibiotics in livestock

Alderman Edward M. Burke (14th) recently introduced a resolution calling upon legislators on Capitol Hill to ban the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in the production of livestock which have been linked to the increasing spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria found in food as well as the spread of “superbugs.” The resolution urges legislators to pass House Bill 1150, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) in the House of Representatives and Senate Bill 1256, the Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance Act (PARA) in the United States Senate. By doing so, Chicago would join Cleveland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Providence, Rhode Island, Red Hook,

New Jersey and Seattle, Washington in passing similar measures. “Chicago should add its influential voice by standing beside the other cities across the nation to urge the adoption of these two bills on Capitol Hill that seek to protect consumers,” Burke said. “The use of non-therapeutic antibiotics poses a very real risk to society that is both dangerous and unnecessary.” The livestock industry routinely uses antibiotics to promote growth while preventing disease in animals that are kept in crowded, unsanitary conditions. Federal authorities have blamed antibiotic resistant Salmonella for several widely reported outbreaks of food-borne illness. Last year, 416 persons were sickened

tory Day is a nationally acclaimed academic program that promotes the study of history in grades 6-12. The young men will be competing against students from all over the country with their outstanding documentary entitled: “Vanquishing the Illinois Black Codes: Chicagoans Who Made a Difference.” These Nazareth students comprise one of only two groups to represent the state of Illinois at this prestigious competition. “I am so proud of the work exhibited by these four students on this amazing documentary. Their scholarly use of primary sources, superior writing and brilliant use of creativity and technology puts this project into a class of its own,” says U.S. History Honors teacher, Therese Hawkins. Nazareth Academy, a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high school serving families from 55 communities and over 100 grade schools in Chicago and the western suburbs, established in 1900 and sponsored by the Congregation of St. Joseph, values scholarship, service, spirit, and unity. Finding employment this summer is a top priority for most college and high school students. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers about seasonal job scams that can re sult in a loss of money, be a huge waste of time or even lead to identity theft. Tell-tale signs of these scams are often fake postings that offer unusually high pay or require little to no effort. “Competition for available jobs is great and many young people will jump at the first “promising,” opportunity and that can lead them into trouble,” says Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. If you are offered a job without a formal interview or job application, it’s most likely a scam. Do not provide any personal or financial information, as it can lead to identity theft. If the employer does not provide you with the details of the job in writing, be wary. If the employer does not have a website or contact information is missing, consider that a red flag. When you have details in writing, be sure to read them carefully. If the employer requires fees for training, background checks or drug tests, it is likely to be a scam. These costs are normally the responsibility of the employer. If an employer offers you a lot of money for simple work or to work at home, it is most likely too good to be true. Do an internet search of the business for both positive and negative comments and then follow-up with the employer. Check the potential employer’s BBB Business Review to see if the employer has a good rating. Visit www.bbb.org
