The Easter spirit was well and alive in our communities!

Allison Babcock

Aaron Juarez-Butler

The Garfield Ridge and the Clearing communities go all out for Easter. There is a multitude of activities for the children every year. Easter events are planned by local businesses and elected officials. This year was exceptional! Last Saturday, April 19, there were two big celebrations going on in our community. Hale Park hosted the Annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Congressman Dan Lipinski and Alderman Mike Zalewski with a host of other elected officials. Hundreds showed up for this well organized event. Children were divided into groups and were able to gather all kinds of goodies. The event held a grand raffle with ‘baskets and bunnies’ for the kids. In addition there were several other activities for the children and their families - a magician, pictures with the Easter Bunny (sponsored by Walgreens), a booth sponsored by the office of the City Clerk, a booth sponsored by Countrywide Finance, live music featuring a local band, the Chicago Fire Department, face painting, and lots more! Please check out the

pictures on the back page of this edition! Also on Saturday, VDSA Chicago offered a day of activities for the families in the area. VDSA, located at 6810 W. Archer, hosted “Marky The Easter Bunny” to the delight of the children. All children received gift bags and they and their families took advantage of hot dogs and other refreshments. VDSA, a security services firm, is led by Garfield Ridge resident, Paul Villarreal. Check out the picture on this page! And let us not forget... the City NewsHound’s Easter coloring contest. What a bonanza of an event. The NewsHound received 361 entries. And they were all magnificent! The contest was advertised as having 3 grand prizes - but with all the entries that was quickly changed to 6 grand prizes. Two winners from each age group were chosen. Allison Babcock (4), and Aaron Juarez-Butler (5) were winners in the 3-5 year old category; Jake Meyers (6) and Angela Quesada (8) were chosen for the 6-8 year olds; and Nathan Diaz (10) and Christina Ferraro (10) were winners in

Nathan Diaz

the 9-11 year old category. Each child received a huge Easter basket that was simply full of prizes - picked out specially for their age. Picture entries were displayed in the windows of the NewsHound and also in the windows of some of the sponsors of the contest. Please thank the businesses that made this contest possible and provided some incredible prizes. The winners are pictured above (unfortunately Christina Ferraro was not available for her photo to be taken). The NewsHound wants to thank all of the participants for their entries. They were truly amazing. Each and every one was a winner - the creativity and the time taken to color the Easter picture was well noted. There seems to be some pretty serious budding artists in this community. And thanks to the parents that brought them in during the busy Easter season. There are always great events and activities for the children of the neighborhood -thanks to the businesses, elected officials, schools, and parks. This is what makes this neighborhood a grand place to live!

Volunteers bring Easter to homebound elders

Who needs a bunny when you have 100 volunteers dedicated to sharing the joy of Easter with Chicago’s lonely/isolated seniors? On Easter, and three days preceding it, Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly volunteers delivered meals/treats to 246 seniors who are homebound or live in nursing homes. “At Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, we believe that elders who are aging alone in our community should not have to spend holidays by themselves,” said CEO Simone Mitchell-Peterson. “Thanks to Good times at the Villarreal Detective Ageny (VDSA) our volunteers, our elders this past Saturday. Each senior received a decorated bag filled with treats—some candy, a piece of carrot cake, a champagne flute and sparkling cider for an

Easter toast, and a potted daffodil to celebrate the coming of spring. Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly is a volunteer-based nonprofit

organization in Chicago committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly by offering friendship and socialization. All services are free and open to seniors over the age of 70, regardless of income. Elders can attend programs, such as coffee club or movie showings, at LBFE headquarters or have volunteers spend time in their homes. The organization serves more than 1,300 elders. Lend Me Your Ear...

Greetings fine friends, neighbors and countrymen! Toots is running around like a loon (a bird with a haunting, yodeling cry). The thing this week is cleaning up the environment. To be more factual, Toots is trying to clean up her environment. She gets on these manic sprees every so often - soon as the weather gets nice. So, here we go again... everything gets tossed. A day later, Toots is out buying the same stuff she threw out. She runs from room to room and pulls everything out. The refrigerator is in the middle of the floor, blocking all access to the living room. The vacuum sits in the middle of the kitchen, with its cleaning tool hanging down the basement stairs. You would think that after tripping over the hose four times, that someone (call her Toots) would simply pick it up. Toots always has visions of grandeur. She will clean and organize and pitch and paint. Big

ideas, small amounts of time, money and resources. Give Toots some Windex and Clorox and she will shine the world. She decides to hit the floors. After several hours at this, Toots has collected enough pet hair to make several animals. Now the cat and dog hair is mixed - give Toots a petri dish. With all this DNA and fur covering she can grow brand new creatures. Cat-Dogs or Dog-Cats. Toots finishes up and does the only thing she can. Heads out and has a big hot fudge sundae with extra hot fudge. Have you ever watched Battlestar Galactica? The show is about humans and their struggles for survival against the robot Cylons, who have killed millions. The Cylons are a fictional race of bio-mechanical beings, created by the humans. The Galactica leads a patchedtogether fleet in search of a mythical planet called Earth. Anyhow, you have to see it to understand it. What a great show. But I

have decided that I might be a Cylon. That could be my problem! Funny thing is...sometimes the robotic Cylons are more humane and compassionate than the actual humans. People get stuck with their stereotypes and this is what leads to today’s prejudices. Yes Madame Editor, I am leading up to this week’s “Moral of the Story”. Wouldn’t it be great if people learned to look at everyone without noticing the color of their skin, their national origin, sex or religion? And took it from there? Didn’t just see black and white, but saw all the tones of grey? The world would definitely be a better place. Why is it that we all jump to conclusions and always feel that we are being put-upon and knocked down? Life is too short! Quit complaining and get on with life. Be thankful that you can. Do all that you do with a smile on your face and a song in your heart! Enjoy every moment! ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Sandoval honors Fire Chief

April Showers

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh April Showers bring May flowers And helps grass turn green We are tired of all the bad weather It’s the worst we ever seen. The rains washed that snow away That’s piled upon the street And giving us room to park our cars For which we think is neat. And we’ll also get our cars washed Each time we park outside Every time that we can save a buck We should do it with pride.

State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-11) took the opportunity on the Senate floor to recognize Bedford Park Fire Chief Sean Maloy, VP of the IL Fire Chiefs Association, for his leadership and commitment to the people in his region. “Chief Maloy of Bedford Park is a credit to his profession,” said Senator Sandoval. “May God bless him and his efforts to protect our families.” The Bedford Park Fire Department is located in one of the most unique villages in the southwest suburbs due to its small residential area surrounded by manufacturing, tank farms, a major railroad switching yard, an inter-modal facility and a hotel and retail corridor.  Pictured:  State Senator Sandoval and Bedford Park Fire Chief Maloy on the Senate floor.

But getting right back to the garden Where we were headed We are going to have some veggies That have to be embedded.

St. Laurence names Maley head basketball coach

Jim Maley was recently named the Head Varsity Basketball coach at St. Laurence. He began his coaching career at Glenbard West High School, where he was a volunteer varsity assistant as well as head junior varsity coach. His JV team was the conference champion that year. After Glenbard West, Maley was the Head Varsity Coach at Kenwood Academy, where he helped his team improve on and off the court. In his three years there, the Kenwood Broncos were 46-34, with at

least 15 wins each season. His team also improved their cumulative GPA and decreased their number of school absences. “As a result of what our coaching staff built, Kenwood Academy will be a serious contender for a public league championship next year, and will have at least 3 players in line to earn Division I scholarships,” said Maley. “I’m committed to creating those same results for the Vikings.” “We are thrilled to add a coach of Jim Maley’s caliber to our athletic department,” said St. Laurence’s Athletic Director, Tim Chandler. “First and foremost, his commitment to academics and developing the whole person really stood out in the interview process. Add in his impressive basketball credentials, including his experience in turning around a program, and it

Drive safely; avoid distractions

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding people to travel safely and avoid driving while distracted as April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. A recent study commissioned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the use of handheld cell phones increase the risk of a crash by three times. According to U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2012 over 3,300 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving. Texting while driving is perhaps the most dangerous form of distracted driving. According to NHTSA, driving while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while drunk and texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers not texting. Illinois has been a national leader in efforts to combat distracted driving. White chaired the state’s Distracted Driving Task Force, which led to the state’s ban on texting while driving in 2010. Over 5,000 people have been convicted of texting while driving since that law took effect Jan. 1, 2010. On Jan. 1, 2014, the new state law banning handheld cell phones while driving took effect. In the law’s first three months, more than 2,800 drivers having been convicted for texting, talking or dialing on a handheld cell phone. Visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com

How would you feel if your dinner came without a fork? That’s how we feel when we read about “special” funeral packages that come with asterisks and fine print, but not some of the things we believe are essential to a funeral. You don’t normally have a funeral without a casket or a hearse. We include them. All the time. At Central Chapel, our mission from the very beginning has been to provide distinctive and affordable service. For us, it’s not a gimmick or a last resort to be less expensive, more inclusive and more transparent–it’s who we are. As to providing unparalleled service of distinction, little extra items of service without add-on costs, and serving only one family at a time—yours……..that’s priceless and without an asterisk--and only at Central Chapel.

May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. *** Two home invaders were frightened off by a 48-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter in their home near 54th and Natoma at 2 p.m. on April 14. The woman told police that while she was taking a shower, the front doorbell rang. The bell went unanswered, and minutes later, she heard two men breaking in the rear door. Now out of the shower, she walked toward the back door to investigate and saw one of two invaders walking up the back steps inside the home. Mrs. Foley, St. Barbara School’s first grade teacher, recycles everything! She and her first grade class sponsor a Capri Sun drink pouch recycling drive at the school. Students toss their empty pouches in to a plastic container after lunch. Mrs. Foley takes them home, washes them and packs them for shipping. The school is waiting for their $150 check for Mrs. Foley’s efforts. The first grade class celebrated winning a prize pack from Terracycle

and their sponsor, Capri Sun. For the school’s participation in the recycling, the school received a new collection container and several “upcycled” pencil bags. The students will be using their new bags as tool kits to store their Everyday Math supplies, such as cubes, fact triangles and coins. St. Barbara School (2859 S. Throop) thanks Mrs. Foley and the first grade class for teaching everyone the importance of recycling.

Operation Impact foot patrol updates

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy recently announced bicycles are being deployed to certain police foot teams assigned to the Police Department’s Operation Impact program, making these officers more mobile while still allowing for easy interactions and conversations with residents. More than one-third of the 360 foot patrol officers assigned to Operation Impact have already been trained and are equipped with bikes, which are now deployed in 19 of the 20 zones. “There is nothing that can compare to officers getting out of their cars, engaging the community and knowing the names, faces and stories of everyone in that neighborhood,” said Emanuel. “For more than a year

Chicago has seen real progress in reducing crime and violence, a testament to our officers and the Department’s policing strategies, heavier investments in prevention efforts, and a partnership with the community,” said McCarthy.

Under Operation Impact, which will now feature officers on bike, on foot and in vehicles, hundreds of additional officers are deployed daily to 20 targeted zones of the city that have traditionally experienced higher rates of violence.

Fake U.S. Postal emails target consumers

Postal customers beware-scammers are disguising themselves as the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and sending out bogus e-mails in order to access personal information. These e-mails claim to be from the USPS and contain information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery or online postage charges. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns customers to beware of these e-mails and says that they should de-

lete the message and take no further action unless they choose to report the email as spam by contacting abuse@usps.gov If opened, the e-mail instructs you to click on a link, open an attachment or print a label. Clicking on the link can activate a virus, which can steal personal information such as usernames, passwords and financial account information. Rep. Lipinski helps secure funds for safety upgrade at Lockport Lock

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will soon be moving forward with a major rehabilitation project at the Lockport Lock and Dam. Nearly 12 million dollars will be used to construct a replacement forebay wall that holds water used in the functioning of the lock. The procedure will reinforce and modernize existing infrastructure, helping to prevent a catastrophic failure of the wall and thus better protect the local community from flood.    “This project is an im-

portant step in rebuilding our aging water transportation system,” said Rep. Lipinski. “It will not only protect the local Lockport community, but also ensure the continued positive economic impact of a properly functioning waterway system.  According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, roughly $81 billion in goods are shipped through Illinois waterways and ports, helping to support 48,195 jobs.” The project manager has confirmed that navigation through the area will not be impacted with this upcoming construction.

Join the South West Special Recreation Association (SWSRA) on Sunday, May 4th, 2014, for the fun and exciting 6th Annual Walk, Run or Roll 1/2 Mile Race. This race is specifically designed so that individuals with special needs, age 8 and older, can participate in a community event that is held in conjunction with the First Midwest Bank Half Marathon & 10K. This year, the Walk, Run, or Roll Race has its highest participation to date, with over 50 athletes! SWSRA is in need of volunteers to help the day of the race. Volunteers are needed for awards, refreshments, participation, gear check-in, finish line and turn around positions.  SWSRA will also be sponsoring a water table to provide water to the half marathon and 10K runners. Volunteers must be ages 16 & up.  If you need to obtain community service hours, or are a track team athlete, this is a perfect opportunity.  Volunteers need to be pre-registered before the day of the race. Additional information can be found on SWSRA’s website. “Having worked this event myself for the past five years, it’s one of our most amazing events, not

only from the perspective of the athletes, but for the volunteers as well,” said Executive Director, Lori Chesna. “You get to see the athletes strive to accomplish a ½ mile race and the cheers and support from the community and fans make this a truly amazing experience to be a part of.” If you would like to become involved with the race and help raise money for SWSRA, you can become a “Charity Runner,” by registering for the First Midwest Half Marathon and raise a minimum of $100. The funds raised will allow SWSRA to continue to provide quality recreation programming and scholarship opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Runners will receive a SWSRA running bib to wear during the race.  If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer or a charity runner, please contact SWSRA’s PR/ Marketing Coordinator,

Justin Waters at jwaters@swsra.com or call 708-389-9423. For more information, please contact the SWSRA office at 708-3899423 or visit www.swsra. com. Aldermen Edward M. Burke (14th) and Will Burns (4th) recently introduced an ordinance that seeks to guarantee that refill cartridges for ecigarettes sold in Chicago contain safe levels of liquid nicotine and have warning labels. A new state law went into effect January 1, 2014, which made it illegal to sell e-cigarettes to minors in Illinois. Also earlier this year, Alderman Burke championed passage through the Chicago City Council of legislation which imposed even tougher restrictions on e-cigarettes by banning their use in public places, including restaurants and bars, and prohibiting free samples from being handed out to the public. By revisiting the issue of e-cigarettes on Wednesday, Alderman Burke insisted that even further steps be imposed by the City to safeguard children from coming in contact with the potential dangers posed by liquid nicotine refill cartridges. “This ordinance would require that the makers of these liquid nico-

tine products sell them in child-proof, tamperresistant containers and warn the consumer to keep them away from children and pets,” Alderman Burke said. According to a preamble to the legislation, “As little as one teaspoon of liquid nicotine can kill a small child and less than one tablespoon can kill an adult,” Alderman Burns noted. The aldermen cited a letter written to President Obama from a consortium of groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, which warned, “New and very troubling data from the National Poison Data System show that reports of poisonings caused by accidental ingestion of eliquids, the liquid used to refill e-cigarette cartridges, tripled from 2012 to 2013, from 459 to 1,414. Yet this liquid remains unregulated.” The European Parliament currently requires child-proof and tamperproof packaging and warning labels concerning liquid nicotine. In addition, Canada has begun regulating e-liquid and ecigarettes under the same rules that govern the safety of drugs, such as manufacturers providing scientific evidence demonstrating safety, quality and efficacy. The proposal was sent for consideration to the Committee on Health and would become effective ninety days after passage and publication. Violators would face fines ranging from $100 to $500 per offense.
