Recently, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) helped honor brave World War II Veteran Bruno Perino, who was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal, the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who have achieved remarkable deeds for France.  Mr. Perino earned this honor for his bravery in helping to liberate France as a rifleman in the 45th Division of the U.S. Army.  Lipinski joined Mr. Perino’s family, members of the American Legion Orland Memorial Post #111 and staff from the George Brown Veterans Center in Orland Park for the ceremony. “Bruno Perino is an exceptional individual and we can’t thank him enough for his service to our great nation and the world,” said Lipinski. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Bruno and his family, and congratulate him on receiving this rare honor.”

As a teenager, Perino saw his first action on the beaches of Marseilles just six days after D-Day.  During his time overseas, he faced countless attacks by Germans; even singlehandedly capturing a German officer and his soldiers in Alsace-Lorraine.  He fought his way through France, Yugoslavia and Belgium, before finally arriving in Germany.  There, he helped liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp.  Constantly immersed in death, destruction and despair, he relied heavily on faith and the power of prayer to get him through the day. After the war was over, Bruno returned to Chicago and was honorably discharged with a variety of military decorations-including 3 Bronze Stars.  Perino went on to build a life in Chicago, getting married and raising three children.  He has since been blessed with grandchildren and great-

grandchildren. Lipinski presented a copy of the statement he made honoring Mr. Perino in the U.S. House of Representatives. A letter from the French Consulate in Chicago reads: “Through this award, the French government pays tribute to the soldiers who did so much for France and Western Europe. More than 65 years ago, you gave your youth to France and the French people. Many of your fellow soldiers did not return, but they remain in our hearts. Thanks to your courage, and to our American friends and allies, France has been living in peace for the past six decades.  You saved us and we will never forget.  Gratitude and remembrance are forever in our souls.” Pictured: World War II Veteran Bruno Perino, his family, members of American Legion Orland Memorial Post #111 and Congressman Lipinski (IL-3).

Lend Me Your Ear...

Greetings and salutations, fine readers of mine! Madame Editor was not at all pleased when she asked for my column this week and my reply was, “To be determined - me hopes.” Honestly this woman has no sense of humour - zero, zilch, nada, nil, none. How can she expect the Toots to disclose her deep dark secrets, her needs and wants, her desires... week after week? All the mystery will surely be gone. And then what? I shall become bland and colourless - Toots shall become monochrome. So Toots shall wrack her weary brain and come up with a somewhat satisfactory column for the old ‘great and grand’. Okay, got it. Toots has finally evolved into Miss Kitty. Yep, Miss Kitty the main squeeze of Marshall Dillon. You folks surely remember Miss Kitty - who could forget? Well...maybe not Miss

Kitty - me thinks it might be Annie Oakley. Yes, that’s it. Ms. Oakley was an American sharpshooter and exhibition shooter according to Wikipedia. Toots feels that she is an equal. Hot dog!! Let Toots back up here for a minute or three. Start at the beginning... Toots has this old (not literally) friend Artie Cultew. Weird name, good guy. He invites Toots to the shooting range. Figures it might do Toots some good. Huh? Toots accepts the invite - always says, “You must try everything once.” Mind you, I have never been a fan of guns - so me thinks this will be quite interesting. So Artie enrolls me into an ‘Intro to Firearms’ class. We arrive at Midwest Sporting Goods in Lyons and Toots is thinking ‘Wow, what if I am a big dummy and can’t shoot the gun? What if someone else can shoot the gun and shoots Toots?”

In Memory Of Ann M. Allen

11-09-27 to 02-26-08

Mom, 6 long years have gone by. We miss you as much today as we did yesterday. Not one day has gone by without thinking of you, and wishing you were still here. I love you more than anything.

Mia & Jim and Jingles

Questions are running through the mind. But I am here and proceed Toots shall. Class starts off with the instructors Pete and Rich explaining about the new Illinois Conceal and Carry Laws. It continues on with the proper handling and storage of firearms. We’re instructed on different types of weapons, loading and unloading of the weapon, and the importance of safety at all times. Really interesting. Sometimes, I tend to be a ‘know-it-all’ - say it ain’t so, Toots. Toots is rolling her eyes as the instructor is telling us to never put your finger on the trigger until you are absolutely ready to shoot. Toots thinks, ‘wow, what moron would put their hand on the trigger prior to shooting?’ Well, this moron would - Toots could not believe that instinctively my finger lands on the trigger and I needed to make a conscious effort to keep it off. For all the ‘knowit-alls’ this training is simply invaluable. Can you believe this??? I am out of space. Give me a break already! I was just getting to the good part about what a sharpshooter I am. Really - I was damned ass good. And I will be back at the range soon. I am itching. Lesson of the week: If you plan on owning a gun - call Midwest Sporting Goods at 708-447-4848 and enroll in a class to learn the safe and responsible manner in which to be a firearm owner. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Sandoval delivers for seniors on Valentine’s Day

Last week, State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-11) arrived with a large vanilla sheet cake, reading “Happy Valentine’s Day, Senator Sandoval,” at the Garfield Ridge Senior Satellite Center, located at 5674 S. Be cautious when checking out contractors offering water damage repair caused by melting snow

With temperatures across northern Illinois expected to be in the 40s during the coming days, snow and ice will be melting over a short period of time, resulting in possible water damage and flooding. Before signing a home improvement contract consider the following tips from the BBB: Research details and free information on contractors you can trust at www.bbb.org and consider using the BBB’s FREE online service, Request A Quote to obtain estimates, proposals or general information from BBB Accredited contractors. Get all estimates in writing. Never sign a contract with blank spaces or ones you do not fully understand. Homeowners should check with local and county units of government to

determine if permits or inspections are required. Determine whether the contractor has the proper insurance. Remember that a down payment of one-third the total contract price is made with additional payments due after completion of each phase of work. Final payment should not be made until the job is completed and you have inspected the work. According, to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Illinois has a Home Repair and Remodeling Act that requires contractors to furnish customers with written contracts for any repair or remodeling work costing more than $1,000. Additionally, the Act states a contract must be signed by both the customer and the contractor. The BBB also makes these recommendations to property owners and

renters looking to obtain flood insurance: Call your insurance agent or company to inquire about the availability of flood insurance in the area. Keep in mind that flood insurance becomes effective 30 days after it is purchased. Standard flood coverage does not typically cover damage resulting from sewer backups or sump pump issues. Ask your insurance agent or company if such additional coverage is appropriate to add to your policy. Homeowners or renters should take an inventory of their personal property and make photocopies of their insurance policies, keeping papers in a secure location. Taking pictures of various rooms and their contents is also a great way to document the contents. Visit www.bbb.org

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh Now the days are getting warmer The snow is melting away And we can give up the shoveling That really makes my day. We won’t have to wear those boots That reach up to here All of that snow will be gone at last The streets will be clear.

And what about the snow filled alleys? And the trouble that we had When we couldn’t get to our garages It’s enough to make you mad. And not one salt truck could be found Or a snow plow on the street It was dangerous on the sidewalks With the ice beneath our feet. This was the worst winter we’ve had For the cold and all the snow Not to mention the wind chill factors That were reaching 20 below.

Queen of Peace students receive CPR and AED certification

Music Corner by Ken Qualter

The Art Of The Love Song Love is by far the #1 subject matter for songwriters. True love, pure love, lost love, unrequited love, lustful love. There are countless love songs. Some great, and 10 times as many sappy. What makes a great love song? As with any good song, you have to start with a strong melody and a great hook. A melody that sticks in peoples’ minds and a hook that makes you want to get up and sing along. But, of course, it’s the lyrics that capture the imagination in a love song. Is there a secret to composing a great love song? Yes, simplicity and

ambiguity. The best and most popular love songs have a universal feel to the words. They make people think, “That’s my story! That’s my lover!” If the composer gets too specific with the lyrics that universal appeal can be lost. Clever word play or a unique turn-of-phrase are always a good element to have in any song. A double entendre or two keeps things interesting if the song has a lusty element to it. After all, what is love without romance? Unrequited platonic love may make for great literature. But in real life it’s a major drag for the party on the unrequited end of

things. Double entendres keep things more humorous, as well. They are much more clever. I hear too much music that is graphic and explicit these days. That may appeal to you if you’re in the 5th grade. But crude just implies lack of creativity. If someone is aiming at my libido with a song, I prefer they do it with a bit of intellect and a lusty vocal performance, rather than just raunchy lyrics. It’s the difference between suggestive and porn. Think of your favorite love songs and see if the secret recipe doesn’t apply. Questions/Comments: www.KenQualter.com

QOP students participate in “Dear Lisa” Program

Queen of Peace has been bringing the “Dear Lisa” program to the school for a number of years. The “Dear Lisa” program is a Dating Violence Prevention Program developed by Mr. Tom Santoro after the tragic death of his daughter, Lisa, in 1994. Lisa was a victim of dating violence.  Mr. Santoro showed a video, read journal entries and talked about dating and domestic violence with all of the Frosh and Sophomore Theology classes. He started with an explanation of how abuse starts (typically verbal) and how it escalates.  He also gave examples of situations and asked how the

girls would react to them. According to Mr. Santoro every 9 seconds a woman is being battered so it’s important that women are being educated on dating violence. According to Queen of Peace counselor Ashley Dick, “The “Dear Lisa” Project is an eye-opening experience for students every year.  It offers critical information about the warning signs for abusive relationships that our girls need to possess in our society today.   Most students have probably never even talked about dating violence before, let alone heard from someone who has been directly affected by its conse-

have already suffered channel closures due to de-funding. Comcast is the largest cable company in the US and it wants to get even bigger by taking over Time Warner. We need them to continue to support our access to public television, as it is a small price to pay for doing business in Chicago, thereby maintaining public access to you, our viewers affordably.   Help us make sure Comcast does the right thing in Chicago by financially supporting Chicago’s CAN TV channels, via strong and lasting agreements with the city, to maintain this wonderful local

television resource. We need to maintain CAN TV for the next 30 years, as we know our work and hundreds of other programs have benefited from this public channel. So, if you can contact your alderman (Write/Email/Phone/Tweet/Facebook, etc.), who are the influential negotiators in this City wide agreement, please do so, as it is crucial to maintain CAN TV in Chicago. If you know of any other public access supporters, please advise them the importance of making sure Comcast does the right thing in Chicago, by supporting CAN TV channels. George “Lester” Fortier

St. Rene School Valentine’s Day project

St. Rene Goupil School, 6340 S. New England, works to make the world a better place through service to their students and to others in need. As a school community they share God’s love with their students through their buddy program. The students in the older grades buddy up with students in younger grades to be role models of behavior and to help the students grow in their learning and confidence. Older students spend time reading with younger students, attending Mass together, and sharing in learning. This program helps all of the students feel connected as a part of the St. Rene family. Each month St. Rene School children continue the mission of Christ by sharing their love of God through service to others, and many of these service projects

have them working with their buddies.  For the month of February many students created Valentine’s Day cards for the children at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. About 200 cards were created by these students and delivered to the hospital for the children to enjoy.   Registration for the 2014-2015 school year has begun. The goal is to provide a family like atmosphere where children feel accepted and valued as they work to build their knowledge and become eager, excited learners. For more information, you are asked to call St. Rene School at 773-586-4414. Burke seeks to end horse-drawn carriage industry in Chicago

Citing safety, sanitation and animal cruelty concerns, Alderman Edward M. Burke (14th) recently proposed that the City Council act to outlaw the horse-drawn carriage rides in Chicago. “Carriage rides have outlived their usefulness in Chicago in 2014,” Alderman Burke suggested. “I would argue it is an unsafe and obsolete tradition that our city should simply ban.” Under the legislation, the City would refuse to renew any existing horse-drawn carriage license, effectively ending the industry.

The proposal was introduced before the Chicago City Council on the heels of a vow by newly elected New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park. In Chicago, horse-drawn carriage rides are currently restricted to operating in certain areas of the city and are banned from operating during rush hour. Horses are required to wear diapers and carriages are also forbidden from operating when the weather is too hot or cold. The aldermen cited accidents that have

occurred in major cities involving carriages and said Chicago’s cement-topped congested streets are not the place for horse-drawn carriage rides if the City wants to ensure public safety and promote compassion toward animals.
