St. Rene students’ Good News Gazette project

The 3rd grade St. Rene REP students recently completed a class project called the “Good News Gazette”. The students are encouraged each week to share with their class any good news that may be happening in their life. While studying about how Jesus and his Disciples made it their mission to spread the Good News to everyone, their teacher Mrs. Olson thought it would be a great idea for the students to use newspaper clippings to make their own “Good News Gazette”. Its purpose was to highlight all of the positive things happening in our community and to include their own personally written articles. They found more than enough material to use from all of the recent issues that the City Newshound had donated for them to use. All of the children had such a great time working on the project and it was wonderful that they had an opportunity to see all of the good things happening around them in their own neighborhood. Ald. Michael R. Zalewski to seek re-election

Alderman Mike Zalewski recently announced that he will seek re-election representing the residents of the 23rd ward in the Chicago City Council. Zalewski received a substantial endorsement from Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan. “I am endorsing Mike Zalewski because he has been a strong and effective lead-

er for our community,” Speaker Madigan stated. “Alderman Zalewski has a proven record of getting things done and I look forward to continue working with him to ensure our community is the best place to live, work, and raise a family.” “With all the uncertainty in the city of Chicago, I cannot turn my back on my community,” Zalews-

ki said. “I am grateful for Speaker Madigan’s endorsement and his confidence in me and what I have accomplished. Zalewski, a life-long resident of the 23rd ward, cites Education, Crime, Constituent services, and New Business Development as his top priorities. The Chicago Municipal General Election is Tuesday, February 24, 2015.

Pappas: Read your new property tax bill to track your local government debt

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said recently that the property tax bill mailed to nearly 1.8 million Cook County owners contains debt figures for every local government that taxes a home, business or other real estate property. Property owners can use their 2013 first installment tax bill to track how much of that total debt is from their own seven to 20 local governments. The bills, due March 4, 2014, show these categories: Money Owed by Your Taxing Districts, Pension and Healthcare Amounts Promised by Your Taxing Districts, Amount of Pension and Healthcare Shortage, Percentage of Pension and Healthcare Costs Taxing Districts Can Pay. “Read your bill to see how much debt your local government is carrying,” Pappas said. “We want you to see what’s behind

the bill.” Pappas said taxpayers “should be aware of how local government debt affects their finances. Just as they need to know how much credit card debt they have, taxpayers should know their local government debt. This information should be a wake-up call: Your local government debt is like having seven to 20 credit cards you may not know you had.” Lawrence Msall, president of the Civic Federation, said the bill not only gives taxpayers information about total debt, but breaks out pension and healthcare costs that threaten to overwhelm local governments. “By putting these numbers on individual property tax bills, Treasurer Pappas has taken an important step toward educating taxpayers about the crippling level of debt and

pension obligations carried by many of our local governments,” Msall said. “These obligations are a growing threat to the fiscal and economic stability of our communities.” Pappas said that people have a right to know where their tax money is going, and showing them the debt of the governments closest to them, local governments, “is transparency in its highest form.” Pappas explained that the information comes from the Debt Disclosure Ordinance (DDO), which requires all primary local governments across Cook County to report their financial data yearly to the Treasurer’s Office. Pappas also put the DDO data on cookcountytreasurer. com, where taxpayers can look deeper into the finances of the individual taxing districts that claim shares of their tax bill.

Lend Me Your Ear...

Greetings, fine readers of mine! Toots is very bedazzled today. Oops wrong word. Bedazzled - meaning enchanted, to impress forcefully. Okay, that sounds good to me too! But I meant to say frazzled - to be in a state of extreme nervous fatigue. Wow, sounds scary. And it’s really weird! Toots has 84 different things going on today and everything seems to be going along pretty good - almost in an organized fashion. So why is Toots frazzled? Because everything is going along and Toots has yet to suffer a melt down. This never happens and Toots is suspicious. What big thing has she forgotten, who is waiting for her where, is Toots finally in the Twilight Zone? What the heck is happening? No one is yelling and screaming, laying on the ground, clawing, yelping... This is not usual in Toots’ crazy world. Nothing is ever in a neat little package being held by smiling people. So, why is Toots nuts?

She should be relishing in this great state. Relax Toots! I’ve heard this altered state takes place every now and then. Go with the program, for cry eye! Go forth into the big world and bedazzle, is what I say. Much more fun that way! Oh, and by the way Toots finally has it, found it, will never let it go, will treasure it, can not believe it - yep, I have the “magic” hat. It’s a great over-sized stocking hat and me loves it for all reasons. You all know that if Toots loves it - she will treasure forever. Let me tell you a bit about “old grey”. And yes, I know that some of you will scream out “aha, she has spelled a word wrong.” Don’t get your panties in a bunch - you should know by now there is always a method to Toots’ madness. You may think that Toots can make a mistake - but throw that from your thought processes. Won’t happen. Gray is used primarily in the United States and

other areas that use U.S. English. Grey is used in Great Britain and areas that use UK English. And do you think the Toots spends all her time in the U.S.? Toots may be a Brit for all you know. Okay, Madame Editor - Toots shall wrap it up. I love “old grey” because it keeps me head warm and it gives me good hair. Toots is known for her tangled, wild, red nest of hair. Say it ain’t so, Toots. Magic hat directions: wash hair, put hat onto wet hair, leave on for one hour, take off and Wallah! (and Wallah is slang for Voila! - taken from the French. Yes, me does get around). So off comes the hat and Toots has real hair - you may call it hat head if you like. Oh, and of further note: Toots will be skirting around town in “old grey” all of summer too. Now isn’t that special? Sorry Madame Editor, I am so easily distracted from topic at hand. Don’t know what magic hat has to do with the column So... My lesson of the week is: Take one day at a time and don’t worry about what happened yesterday and don’t concern yourself with what might happen tomorrow. Today is a gift and treat it that way. Work with the mantra of Toots - “Seize The Day”. You must celebrate every day! And... strive for good hair. ‘til next week... Toots Malone

Rep. Lipinski honors Catholic Schools Week with resolution in U.S. House

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski has once again introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives praising the outstanding work of Catholic schools and honoring National Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year’s Catholic Schools Week — which runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 — is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” “As a proud graduate of Catholic grammar school and high school, every year I look forward to highlighting the achievements of America’s Catholic schools during Catholic Schools Week,” Rep. Lipinski said. “The Chicago Archdiocese and the Joliet Diocese run two of the very best school systems in the country, regularly producing graduates who are successful in their chosen fields and go on to become leaders in their communities. Visiting the students, teachers, and administrators at our Catholic schools throughout this special week is always inspiring. It is one of the highlights of my year.” During Catholic Schools

Week, Rep. Lipinski visits and speaks at Catholic schools throughout his district. Among the schools he is scheduled to visit this year are St. Francis Xavier School in LaGrange, SS. Cyril & Methodius School in Lemont and St. Catherine of Alexandria School in Oak Lawn. Rep. Lipinski’s resolution, H.Res. 461, praises Catholic schools for instilling a “broad, valuesadded education emphasizing the lifelong development of moral, intellectual, physical, and social values in young people in the United States.” It also notes that in the 2012-13 school year, the total Catholic school student enrollment was more than 2 million, with an outstanding studentteacher ratio of 13 to 1. The graduation rate for Catholic high school students is 99 percent, with 85 percent of graduates going on to four-year colleges. Today, more than

15 percent of students in Catholic schools are not Catholic. Over the past 30 years, the percentage of minority students enrolled in Catholic schools has more than doubled. “On behalf of Catholic educators across the country, we are grateful to Congressman Lipinski and the co-sponsors of this resolution in support of Catholic education and National Catholic Schools Week,” said Brother Robert Bimonte, FSC, President of the National Catholic Educational Association. “This week is not only a celebration but a timely reminder that Catholic schools are both a gift to the Church and to the nation that must be treasured and preserved.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of Catholic Schools Week, as designated by the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Not Your Parents Grammys

I confess that I haven’t watched the Grammys in many years. It’s hard to watch the recording industry congratulate itself for mediocrity. Not to mention that the show was notoriously out of touch with the contemporary scene. And often just plain boring. Who cares who won the award for the Best Asst. Gofer On A Spoken Word Album? Things have changed dramatically since I last watched as evidenced by the opening performance by Beyonce. Can they do that on prime time TV? The performance was so graphic and explicit that it was ludicrous when the censors bleeped out lyrics. I can only speak for

the men, but hey guys, did you even notice any lyrics? If this performance were any more explicit they would have had to hand out condoms to the audience. There’s a lot more music and a lot less boring awards on the show now. Spectacle is big, as it has been for a while in pop. Witness the Beyonce and Katy Perry numbers. The music is more contemporary, with a nod to the past. And the awards are still mostly about sales rather than artistic merit. Highlights: The Beatles won a Lifetime Achievement Award. Paul McCartney won for Best Rock Song That Nobody Has Heard. I’m not

Show Your Support For Our Brave Troops!

sure why Chicago was there. Perhaps they won an award for Best Tribute Band. Stevie Wonder proved that he can make even robots sound funky when he jammed with Daft Punk on “Get Lucky”. Yoko Ono proved that an octogenarian can shake her booty and still look good in the process. The biggest lowlight? The producers and directors of the show proved beyond any doubt that the Grammys are all about commercialism and not the music. They cut off Trent Reznor and the Queens Of The Stone Age in mid-song at the end of the show after the credits ran out. Who does that on the music industry’s biggest showcase? Valentine's

Each year the senior class at Queen of Peace High School, 7659 S. Linder (Burbank) participates in an Arts Without Borders program. Art Without Borders is an enrichment program in which students participate in a variety of cultural and fine arts experiences offered throughout Chicago. Over a course of four

years, each student will engage in eight trips/experiences which include plays, symphonies, operas, music and dance performances, museums, special exhibits and cultural programs. The Neo-Futurists (pictured above), a  troop of actors, did an abbreviated show of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

for the seniors. This is a show that has been running for 25 years downtown. The actors did 15 plays in 30 minutes for the senior girls. After the performance, the girls were broken down into smaller groups to attend three workshops about motivation, their particular style of performance, etc. run by the actors.

State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) reacted to the State of the State address by bringing attention to the state’s appallingly high unemployment rate.   One year ago, Illinois had a 10.1 percent unemployment rate and today it is 8.6 percent. However, Sandoval states this number is still too high. The national average is 6.5 percent and

the state of Illinois needs to focus on investing in jobs to get people back to work. The Senator is co-sponsoring Senate Bill 68 with Senator Kim Lightford to convert Illinois’ minimum wage into a living wage of $10 an hour by 2016. Sandoval believes that people who are working a 40-hour workweek should be able

to provide food, shelter and child care for their family and $8.25 an hour simply isn’t enough. Sandoval argues the state’s economic development policy needs to get back to the basics of training Illinois residents to fill jobs rather than sending large tax breaks to a few large companies. “I agree with Speaker Madigan that we need to stop giving special tax breaks to corporations who continue to look to the General Assembly for handouts. Instead, we need to focus on the mom and pop small businesses that are the backbone of the Illinois economy,” said Sandoval. “The people of Illinois deserve action.

Try these chicken wings during the big game, or any other time. Broilkingbbq.com offers a wide variety of recipes, tips, and tricks for everyone from the novice griller to the die-hard outdoor chef. The barbecue chefs at Broil King have developed this recipe for delicious grilled wings. Grilled Chicken Wings with Roquefort Dip Serves 6-8 people 3 lbs. chicken wings, cleaned and trimmed Select wings of roughly equal size for evenness of cooking. Ingredients Marinade: 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Blue Cheese Dip 1/2 cup Mayonnaise 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon onion, grated

1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1/3 cup blue cheese, crumbled Directions Preheat the barbecue on high. Cut each wing at the joint to make two pieces, and discard wing tip if still attached. In a large re-sealable bag, whisk together vegetable oil, garlic, spices and vinegar. Add chicken wings and toss to coat. If using rotisserie basket, spray or brush lightly with vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Place chicken wings on bottom of basket, cover with the top part, and fasten on tightest setting to secure the wings in place. Cook-

ing grids will need to be removed, and a drip pan placed beneath. If using rear rotisserie burner, set to high. If using lower burners, set to medium. Place the basket on spit and in the rotisserie and start the motor. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes to an hour. If cooking directly on well oiled cooking grids, turn heat to low, and cook, turning frequently until golden brown and crisp, 30 - 45 minutes. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure that all wings are cooked through and ready to eat. Stir together all the dip ingredients. May be made ahead of time and chilled until ready to serve with chicken wings, celery and carrots. More information on grilling and great recipe ideas is available at www.broilkingbbq.com.

Brian Church, 25, Jared Chase, 29, and Brent Betterly, 25, are charged with Providing Material Support for Terrorism, Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism, Possession of an Incendiary Device, and Solicitation to Commit Arson. According to charging documents, the three

defendants made plans to destroy police cars and attack four Chicago Police district stations with destructive devices, and sought to undermine the police response to the conspirators’ other planned actions for the NATO Summit. Some of the proposed targets included the Campaign Headquarters of President Obama, the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and certain downtown financial institutions. Opening statements for the trial began on Jan. 21st at the Leighton Criminal Courts in Chicago.

FREEze Day on Sunday, February 9. The free admission day will feature fun-filled outdoor activities for the entire family. Over 91 percent of Illinois CDL holders have complied with Federal CDL Medical Merge Program

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced recently that more than 420,000 Illinois CDL holders have successfully complied with the new federal CDL/Medical merge program. This represents over 91 percent of all CDL holders in Illinois. Those not complying by Jan 30 risk losing their CDL privileges. Per federal changes initiated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), all CDL holders nationwide were given two years – beginning January 30, 2012, through January 30, 2014 – to declare whether they engage in interstate operation or intrastate operation. If interstate operation is declared, the CDL holder must provide the Secretary of State’s office a copy of their U.S. Department of Transportation medical card. This information is then submitted through the Commercial Driver’s License Information System, which is accessible

by law enforcement nationwide. Beginning in February, the Secretary of State’s office is required to cancel CDL privileges for those who have not complied with this federal regulation. White is encouraging CDL holders who have not complied to do so by January 30. The Secretary of State’s office has made repeated efforts to make CDL holders aware of the federal requirements through both direct communication and various CDL industries. In October 2011, the office sent letters to every Illinois CDL holder informing drivers of their obligation to appear at a Secretary of State facility to declare and submit a medical certificate, if engaged in interstate driving. Follow-up letters to those drivers who had not yet appeared were sent in September and December 2013. In addition, the Secretary of State’s office has engaged in substan-

tial outreach efforts to help ensure that all CDL holders are aware of their obligations and possible cancellation of their CDL privileges. These outreach efforts included presentations at truck and trade shows, communication with regional superintendents of education (most school bus drivers hold CDLs), communication with the 25 largest CDL trucking companies in Illinois, and direct communication to dozens of professional organizations whose members include CDL holders. CDL holders may find their nearest CDL facility by visiting the Secretary of State’s website at: http://www.ilsos.gov/ facilityfinder/facility. Further information can be found by visiting the link: http://www. cyberdriveillinois.com/ departments/drivers/ drivers_license/CDL/ cdl.html#medical or by calling the Secretary of State’s CDL Medical Card Unit at 217-785-3002.

St. Barbara students do service project

In preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, St. Barbara seventh and eighth graders are doing a variety of service projects in addition to their ministry and parish projects. On December 10, the students and their teachers traveled down to the Merchandise Mart to help Catholic Charities organize and pack Christmas bags for the needy families served by the organization. It was a great way for the students to work for a cause that would make a difference in the lives of so many. The students enjoyed reading the biographies of the families receiving the bags. It made them understand poverty in a real way and appreciate what they have in their own families. Pictured: St. Barbara students Jaclyn Mata, Billy Murrihy and Isabelle Garrity.

Anointing of the sick Mass at St. Symphorosa Church February 8

St. Symphorosa Church, located at 6135 S. Austin Avenue, is planning an Anointing of the Sick Mass and celebration in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes - the feast celebrating Mary’s apparition to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, which has since become a place of solace and healing for those who are in distress and for those suffering illness. Although the traditional feast is celebrated on February 11th, the par-

ish celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, February 8th. The celebration begins with a concert of Marian songs at 4:30 p.m. The concert will be followed by the 5 p.m. Mass which will include a sacramental Anointing of the Sick. After Mass, all will be invited for a viewing of the classic movie, “Song of Bernadette” in the Mason Avenue School Hall. Sandwiches, salads & unlimited popcorn will be available.

A minimum $5.00 donation per person is being requested (payable at the door) to help cover the cost of food and drinks. So that the parish might have some idea of the amount of food to order for the evening, they ask that those planning to attend the “Movie Night” portion of the celebration call the Parish Office (773-767-1523). Plan to join St. Symphorosa as they continue to gather as a family of faith around our Spiritual Mother.

Resources to educate public on age-related macular degeneration

Today, more than 2 million Americans ages 50 and over have age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  AMD is an eye disease that causes central vision to gradually deteriorate.  According to the 2013 “Cost of Vision Problems:  The Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders in the United States,” report, blindness and low vision annually costs more than $3.7 billion, with an annual per-person treatment cost of $6,680. Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization, has declared February as Age-related Macular Degeneration/Low Vision Awareness Month. As part of the observance, the group offers educational materials at no cost through its dedicated web pages. This new online resource, http://lowvision.preventblindness.org, offers a wealth of information ranging

from an extensive list of searchable, local low vision resource directories to an informative blog with news for people living with age-related eye disease and significant visual impairment, authored by patient advocate and low vision educator Dan Roberts, M.M.E. Making a commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle also helps to save sight.  Prevent Blindness recommends: Visit an eye doctor regularly, stop smoking, eat healthy foods, including foods rich in certain antioxidants, stay active, control blood pressure, avoid eye injuries that may cause permanent damage by wearing eye protection during physical activities, and when outdoors, no matter what time of year, always wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat. For further details, please call 800-331-2020 or visit preventblindness.org/amd.

Life... is like a box of chocolates - a cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that no one ever asks for, unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So, you're stuck with mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's nothing else to eat while you're watching the game. Sure, once is a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it's gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you are left with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, which, if you are desperate enough to eat, leaves nothing but an empty box of useless brown paper. ~The X-Files

Break proposed for motorists slapped with “unfair” city sticker tickets

Chicago motorists are often ticketed for failing to display their city sticker-even though they have purchased one. And the expensive ticket can often land a vehicle owner in front of an administrative hearing officer, unless they wish to pay the fine which can be $200 or higher. Recently, Alderman Edward M. Burke (14th) and Mary O’Connor (41st) offered a legislative solution to what is often considered an “unfair” ticket. The aldermen introduced an ordinance before the

Burke and urged that a legislative solution be arrived at after one of her constituents, a Norwood Park senior, was fined $200 for not displaying a city sticker even though she had purchased one and it was on her windshield. The plight of Gladys Tamayo caught the attention of a local columnist and the matter was eventually dismissed. But not all Chicagoans are so lucky and the aldermen argue that it is time for the City Council to change the municipal code.

Free File now open-offers free tax prep and E-filing

To help people get a jump on their taxes before the Jan. 31 filing season opens, the Internal Revenue Service today announced the immediate availability of Free File brand-name software for most taxpayers. Fourteen commercial software companies that provide their Free File tax prep products at no cost began offering their products today -- available only at IRS.gov/freefile. Although you can complete and e-file your tax return now, the Free File companies will hold it until Jan. 31 when the IRS begins accepting returns. As previously announced, the IRS delayed the filing season due to critical system testing following the federal government closure. “Many tax preparers and tax software companies are now open for return preparation, including Free File. If you plan to get a head start on your taxes, remember to e-file. Electronic filing will allow software companies to hold your return and to automatically send it to the IRS on Jan. 31.

There is absolutely no advantage to filing by paper,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “If you want to save money and time, just use Free File to prepare and e-file your federal return at no charge.” As Jan. 31 approaches, Koskinen reminded taxpayers that IRS.gov has a range of information and services to help taxpayers prepare their tax returns. “Free File is just one of the many services available through IRS. gov to help people with their taxes,” Koskinen said. “Additional services include Where’s My Refund for timely updates on refunds, YouTube videos with quick tax tips, and many other ways of getting information. We encourage taxpayers to explore IRS.gov as tax season approaches.” Free File, a public-private partnership, is the free way to do your federal tax returns either by using brand-name software or online fillable forms. Free File software is available now to more than 100 million individuals and families that earn

$58,000 or less, which is 70 percent of taxpayers. Starting Jan. 31, Free File Fillable Forms will be available to accept tax returns for free e-filing from any taxpayer who is comfortable preparing their own tax return. Nearly 40 million taxpayers have used Free File since it debuted in 2003. These taxpayers have saved more than an estimated $1.2 billion by using Free File. Here’s how it works: At IRS.gov/freefile, select the “Free File Software” button. Each of the 14 Free File companies sets specific offers – generally based on income, state residency and age – to use their software. If your income is $58,000 or less, you will find at least one, if not more, offers available to you. You can review each of the 14 company offers or use the IRS “Help Me Find Free File Software” tool to find an offer that matches your situation. Once you make your selection, you will be directed to the commercial provider’s website to begin preparing your return.

Hearthware and its NuWave ovens

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Chicago and Northern Illinois is alerting consumers about Hearthware, Inc. and its product the NuWave Oven, which is typically sold through infomercials. In the past three years, 1,291 complaints from consumers in all 50 states as well as 3 different provinces in Canada have been filed against this company with the BBB. There have been 331 complaints in the past 12 months, 18 from Illinois. A review of consumer complaints shows a pattern of allegations and complaints.  Doreen Burton, a consumer from Forest Park, IL recently purchased a Hearthware product. “I called late at night after the commercial for the NuWave Oven.  They sent a cooktop instead.  I sent it back right away.  They charged $121.18 for shipping and handling and would not refund those charges. They did not tell me how high this charge was going to be.  I called

and complained and the person that I talked to said he would send me a copy of the tape where I agreed. I never got the tape and I never got a refund for shipping and handling.” “The single largest number of complaints allege that consumers were charged either for free products or in exorbitant shipping and processing fees associated with products they thought were free,” explained Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. To help avoid problems with purchasing products advertised through infomercials, the Better Business Bureau recommended consumers take these steps: Avoid becoming caught up in an urgent sales pitch. Many times sellers use phrases like “for a limited time,” “order now before prices increase,” and “in short supply.” Take your time to consider the purchase. Research the company

and product. Go to bbb. org to obtain the Business Review on the company and check its BBB rating. Compare products and pricing. Search online to compare products and pricing from other manufacturers and sources. Read and understand the fine print. Make sure you understand purchase and return policies, restocking fees and exchange options. Review seller’s privacy policy. Will your name and other information be sold or used to solicit for other offers. Obtain a delivery time. Request purchase confirmations and tracking numbers. Be suspicious if the business cannot supply this information. Pay by credit card and retain receipts. This allows you to more easily dispute charges. The BBB also recommends buyers immediately notify sellers if items are disappointing, damaged or do not arrive as anticipated. For more information, visit www.bbb.org

Gun Report by Artie Cultew Even if you’re not into guns, there’s still a good chance that you’ve at least heard of a few of the more popular brand names. Colt and Winchester were the “guns that won the west” here in America and they’ve been around since the 1800s, along with Remington, Smith & Wesson and others. Walther is a German company also dating back to the 1800s. Springfield Armory produced guns for the U.S. military since the 1700s. Beretta, an Italian company, dates back to the 1500s. All these companies have a long and rich history and are still in business today. Then there’s the new kid on the block. An Austrian company named Glock that just popped onto the scene in 1982 and took the gun world by storm with their truly revolutionary designs that by now have been copied by virtually all other handgun manufacturers. Glock is probably one of the most popular brands of guns in the world today. Approximately 65% of police departments in the United States use Glock pistols, if that tells you anything. They also command a good percentage of sales in the civilian market. Prior to Glock’s sudden appearance, guns were made almost entirely of metal. Founder Gaston Glock had entered the firearms world with no previous experience in gun design or manu-

facturing but did have extensive knowledge of synthetic polymers – aka “plastic”. (Maybe he saw The Graduate and took the advice given to Ben Braddock.) Gun purists may laugh at the thought of guns being made of plastic components but Glock is having the last laugh in this case – and we all know that “he who laughs last laughs best”. Polymer guns are lighter and less costly to manufacture than their metal counterparts. Lighter may not mean much to you but ask any cop who has to schlep one around all day and he’ll probably agree that a lighter gun is a lot more comfortable to carry. Less costly to manufacture translates to lower cost to the buyer. Polymer guns still contain metal parts, such as the barrel and slide, so all the initial publicity and panic-peddling about bad guys sneaking them through metal detectors and into airplanes and courtrooms turned out to be nothing more than over-zealous anti-gun re-

portage aimed at peoples’ ignorance. As far as brand names go, Glock is to guns as Timex is to wristwatches. Please note that I said Timex, not Rolex, though some diehard Glock fans would prefer to have you think otherwise. A far cry from being the crème de la crème, they nevertheless have a well-deserved reputation for reliability and affordability. A lot of bang for the buck, as they say! Most gun owners I know are very opinionated about Glocks. They either totally love ’em or they absolutely hate ’em. Kinda like mushrooms on a pizza. Food for Thought We defend our president, governor, mayor, celebrities, etc. with guns. We defend our courts, sporting events, jewelry stores, banks, etc. with guns. We defend our children with a sign that reads “THIS IS A GUN FREE ZONE” – and then call someone with a gun if there’s an emergency. Keep those emails coming! artie@citynewshound.com
