Rep. Lipinski honors Polish hero Lech Walesa in Washington

Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) met recently with Polish hero and international statesman Lech Walesa at the Washington, D.C. opening of “Man of Hope,” the movie chronicling his incredible rise from an electrician in the Gdansk shipyards and leader of the movement that felled Soviet communism to the first democratically elected president of post-communist Poland. Rep. Lipinski is co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Poland and represents nearly 100,000 Polish-Americans in Congress, one the highest numbers for any congressional district. “Lech Walesa will always be one of

my personal heroes for his spirit and tenacity in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles,” Lipinski said. “He is one of the greatest freedom fighters of our time, whose strong Catholic faith and devotion to personal liberty were central to the end of the Cold War. Walesa is the embodiment of the tremendous feats just one man can accomplish. His story deserves to be told.” Under Walesa’s leadership, Poland’s first independent trade union, Solidarity, demanded free elections and bravely called for the end of the county’s Soviet-backed communist government. In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. In a historic speech before a joint session of Congress in 1989, he famously evoked the U.S. Constitution by starting his address with the words, “We the people.” Following communism’s collapse, Walesa was elected president of the Republic of Poland in 1990, serving for five years. A monument to Walesa and the Solidarity movement stands in Rep. Lipinski’s’ district at the intersection of Archer Avenue and 55th Street.

Attorney Gen. Madigan charges debit card identity theft ring

Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced charges against a trio of identity thieves for obtaining and using fraudulent debit cards to access thousands of dollars in cash. Defendants Nikolay Bozov, Yuliyan Kehayov and Dan Stoica were charged in Cook County Criminal Court with continuing a financial crimes enterprise, identity theft, financial institution fraud, conspiracy to commit a financial crime, wire fraud and computer fraud. Madigan alleged that the defendants were part of an organized financial insti-

tution fraud ring in which fake debit cards were re-encoded with bank account information belonging to victims across the United States and overseas. Using fraudulent cards, the defendants allegedly accessed bank accounts and access codes of their victims in order to illegally withdraw thousands of dollars. Authorities obtained evidence showing that the defendants made more than 30 illegal withdrawals at financial institutions in the Chicago area between July and October 2013. The defendants were found to be

in possession of hundreds of fraudulent debit cards. “As identity thieves continue to devise more advanced schemes, it is more important than ever to keep close track of your personal financial information and quickly flag any irregularities with your bank,” Madigan said.   Bozov of Schiller Park, Kehayov of Harwood Heights, and Stoica of Chicago, were freed on $50,000 bonds. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Secret Service and the Chicago Police Department.

Students, senior helpers, parents and staff of the Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School Little School program recently welcomed SMSgt. James Wynn home from Afghanistan with a surprise celebration. He arrived at McAuley thinking he would speak to the preschoolers, including his son, Colin, about being a soldier. Instead, he was welcomed by his wife, Meg, and younger daughter as he was led to a place of honor. The ceremony included a procession of preschool students carrying American flags and

singing patriotic songs. Little School teachers Mrs. Cheryl Dignan and Ms. Mariclare Malinger offered a heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Little School staff and Mother McAuley for all he has done for the country. Sgt. Wynn returned from duty in Afghanistan on November 8, just in time for the holiday season. This was his second tour of duty as part of the National Guard Air Force. He is employed with the Chicago Police Department while at home. SMSgt. Wynn was surprised and thankful. Before leaving, he answered

questions about how he communicated with those at home during the seven months he was deployed. Every morning he used the FaceTime application on his iPhone to talk to his family.  There was a nine hour time difference, so it was usually right before Colin’s bedtime. The USO provided the troops with books, and almost every Sunday, Sgt. Wynn would videotape himself reading a book to Colin.  He is very grateful for the help the USO provided, and said he would never miss an opportunity to donate to the USO.

Planning to lose weight is often a part of ringing in the New Year when the holiday season comes to an end. However, consumers who want to diet or shape up should be very cautious when signing up for exercise programs and gym memberships, advises the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois (BBB). In the last 12 months, consumers have filed 7,823 complaints with the BBB about health clubs. Many of these showed that consumers had difficulty cancelling memberships or with billing disputes. “Joining and obtaining the full benefit from a health club is commitment. You want to spend your time focused on your weight loss and exercise goals, not complaining,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois.

Foot Prints In The Snow

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh There were Foot Prints In The Snow Leading to my front door And there was another set of tracks I had never seen before. Now the first one belonged to me When I came in last night But that second set was too small And they didn’t look right. For they belonged to some animal With four very small feet So I followed them down the stairs Out toward the street.

Freezy the Snowman

Occupation: Keeping people happy about the snow. It can be quite a job late in the winter. Personal Stats: I am single – I travel a lot and am gone most of the year. What’s The Most Unusual Thing That’s Ever Happened To You? One year I found myself in the middle of a nice cozy living room! I got out of there fast (with the help of the lady of the house). When Did You First Locate To This Area? On and off over the last thousand years. It’s a great place with lots of good packing snow! What’s The Best Advice Anyone Has Ever Given You? The best advice that I received came from my cousin Frosty. A broom in the hand is worth 10 in the summer. If You Could Have One Wish Granted, What Would It Be? My wish would be that everyone would slow down a little this season and take the time to enjoy the spirit of the holiday. Any Hobbies? I enjoy broom hockey, ice-skating and counting snowflakes. If You Could Meet Someone From The Past, Who Would It Be? If I could meet someone from the past, I would like to meet the first person who ever built a snowmanto say thanks. When Are You Happiest? I am happiest when I am in the park, with lots of kids arguing about what kind of hat I should wear. What Was The Biggest Event In Your Life? It happens every year when the hat goes on my head and my season begins! If You Could Change Anything About Your Life, What Would It Be? Nothing. I’m cheerfully chilly and fabulously flaky about my life. I love it! Anything Else To Add? Happy Holidays to everyone! After your shopping and decorating please make time to come out and play! And don’t forget to keep on reading your community newspaper, the City NewsHound!

Summit Park Seniors attend The Christmas Schooner Musical

Music Corner by Ken Qualter

New Year’s Intentions

Regular readers of this column already know my sad and sordid tale regarding New Year’s Resolutions. Back in my misguided youth I always made New Year’s Resolutions. And at the end of the year, when I had failed miserably at most of them, I felt horribly depressed. Then, one year I made the smartest Resolution I ever made. I resolved NOT to make any more Resolutions. And I was a much happier homo sapien for 15 or 20 years. Then for some stupid reason (I think it had to do with writing this column), I started making Resolutions again. Back to the depths

of depression. Three years ago I came up with the idea of making New Year’s Intentions rather than Resolutions. Instead of making a solemn vow to myself that I would improve and correct my life in such and such a manner, I simply told myself that, hey, I’m going to try to be better at this. And how have my 2013 Intentions gone? Well, I pretty much have the same dismal results with Intentions as I did with Resolutions. But I don’t feel nearly as bad. Hey, I didn’t promise nobody nothin’! Actually, 2013 went pretty well in at least one

area. I managed to keep up a good music practice routine for most of the year. And I hustled and played more gigs than I’ve had in a while. Now, if you are one of those persons that is really good at the SelfImprovement thing, then by all means go with Resolutions. I would like to say that I sincerely admire and despise you. But if you are like the rest of us poor fallible mortals, I might recommend New Year’s Intentions. Personally, I’m considering a return to the No More Resolutions Resolution. In English they are solving a Christmas mystery, Math class brings decimal division and they are enjoying Chemistry lessons in Science. The seventh grade is focusing on nouns and pronouns in English class and find themselves learning about the British taxes that led to the American Revolution in Social Studies. They spent three days in the science lab working with circuits, chemical reactions, buoyancy, and Newton’s Laws as an introduction to the next unit on Physical Science. During Math class they have been solving one step equations with whole numbers and integers. Eighth graders have completed their study of the Civil War in So-

cial Studies, worked on narrative essays in English, and learned about ecological succession in Science. In Math class they have been solving equations with multiple operations. The whole school truly enjoyed the musical of the “Christmas Chronicles” presented by grades 3 – 6. The singing was inspirational and we all admired the hard work that

went into the creation of this terrific performance. The Student Activity Group sponsored a dress down day to raise funds to buy gifts for the parish Giving Tree. Burke, Cardenas propose ban on polystyrene food service products

Sandoval, Zalewski: ‘GRREAT start for Garfield Ridge’

In an ongoing effort to stimulate the local economy, State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-11) and Alderman Mike Zalewski (23) met with a small, but determined group, of Garfield Ridge residents to discuss the redevelopment of Archer Road in Garfield Ridge. Archer Avenue used to be a thriving business and social hub for Garfield Ridge. Unfortunately, over the years many small businesses have either closed their doors or moved to neighboring suburbs. Approximately one year ago, a small but determined group of Garfield Ridge residents who shared a passion for their neighborhood, began to brainstorm on ways to redevelop Garfield Ridge and help make it condu-

cive to business needs and pedestrian traffic. “Small businesses are the backbone of the community,” said Sandoval. Working towards redeveloping Garfield Ridge as a small business haven, the residents have since formally organized as Garfield Ridge Retail Entertainment and Amusement Team, otherwise known as GRREAT LLC. After carefully evaluating and polling community interest and support via GRREAT’s Facebook page, the group met with Zalewski and Sandoval to share the results and present an economic and redevelopment plan. Needless to say, both the alderman and senator were very impressed and fully supported the movement. To the suggestion of Sando-

val, members of GRREAT also met with the managers of several local suburban and city redevelopment projects. The goal of GRREAT, LLC is to redevelop the 1-mile stretch from Harlem to Narragansett with streetscaping and to also make it more pedestrian friendly for customers to find businesses. The goal is to attract a small handful of the right corporate businesses that will in turn create a “ripple effect” that will attract smaller owner operated restaurants and shops. They aim to keep the businesses that are very much a part of our community and help them continue to succeed. There is a lot of work to be done, but Alderman Zalewski has helped build a coalition of willing po-

litical leaders who deem the project worthwhile for businesses and residents alike. GRREAT met with State Senators Sandoval and Muñoz as well as Zalewski to formally present their Economic Plan for the Redevelopment of Garfield Ridge. To get involved, “Like” Redeveloping Garfield Ridge for Restaurants and Retail on Facebook, email at wearegrreat@gmail. com or call 773-410-2830. Cafeterias, coffee shops, restaurants, taverns and other frequent users of polystyrene food service products, such as Styrofoam, would have to stop using the non-eco-friendly product in Chicago under an ordinance introduced today before the City Council by Aldermen Edward M. Burke (14th) and George Cardenas (12th). If adopted, Chicago would join more than one-hundred cities nationwide which have enacted Styrofoam or polystyrene-related bans. Most of the bans have occurred on the West Coast and many involve take-out cups and trays. The measure proposed in Chicago seeks to encourage the wider use of alternative biodegradable or recyclable food service and food packaging products. It also aims to reduce costs associated with the disposal of Styrofoam or expanded polystyrene products and bans polystyrene packing materials. While the ordinance seeks to add another tool to Chicago’s arsenal of green initiatives, it also seeks to protect children. “Toxic chemicals leach out of such products into the food that contain and threaten human health,” a preamble to the legislation stated. More than 250,000 students at the Chicago Public Schools use Styrofoam trays daily and the system throws away 35 million lunch trays annually. Exemptions to the proposal would include prepackaged food packaged outside the City of Chicago. The newly proposed chapter in the Municipal Code would be enforced by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. Violators would face fines of not less than $100 and not more than $300 for the first offense and not less than $300 or more than $500 for subsequent offenses. Each day that a violation continues would constitute a separate and distinct offense. The measure would become effective on July 1, 2014.

Queen of Peace “adopts” Families for the Holidays

Crime Report Courtesy swchicagopost.com by DanofO’Bookum Editor’s note: We present this police blotter news as a public service, courtesy of our friends at swchicagopost.com. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. ***

A 30-year-old Lincoln Park man has been charged in the robbery and sexual assault of a 69-year-old woman that occurred just east of the CTA Orange Line terminal at 59th and Knox at about 4:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27. James Whiteside, of the 600 block of West Deming Place, was

scheduled to appear in Central Bond Court, 26th and California last Monday, police said. Chicago police made the announcement via a statement emailed to the press at 1:46 a.m. Monday. According to a community alert issued by CPD detectives before Whiteside was apprehended, the victim “was returning home from work, had just exited the Orange Line train and was entering her vehicle parked in a secured parking lot when she was forced into her vehicle by an unknown black male offender who related that he was armed with a handgun. This offender proceeded to sexually assault the victim and subsequently robbed her, taking U.S. currency, her cell phone and ATM card. The offender then drove the victim to various locations and made withdrawals from her bank account before

abandoning her and the vehicle on Chicago’s West Side.” Police said that Whiteside is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault (one because the victim is a senior citizen, the other because a weapon was used), kidnapping, aggravated kidnapping/armed kidnapping, aggravated robbery, armed robbery/ other dangerous weapon, aggravated unlawful restraint, and aggravated vehicular hijacking. Police added that “Whiteside is also charged for an earlier incident in which he was identified as the offender who sexually assaulted a 23-year-old female victim in the 3100 block of North Harlem on Dec. 27th at approximately 2:30 a.m. No further information is available at this time.” Want to read more Southwest Side crime news? This year, the Queen of Peace community “adopted” 8 families from the St. James community. Homerooms teamed up to bring in food items for a holiday meal along with gifts and everyday essentials for each family member. Items included toys the kids requested, jackets, scarves, gloves, as well as food for a full meal and everyday items like laundry detergent, toilet paper, and diapers. In addition, families were adopted by a group of their faculty and staff as well as another family by their Parent Club. As part of every family’s holiday meal, they were provided a turkey so their holiday meal would be complete. The Queen of Peace community feels fortunate and blessed to be able to assist families and make their Christmas and Holidays a little more special.

My Year of the Gun

There’s an old Dinah Washington song called “What a Difference a Day Makes” which es pouses one of the simple truths in life, namely, how quickly things can change sometimes. To most adults, twenty-four hours doesn’t always seem like much but a lot can happen in that relatively short amount of time. Well, let’s extrapolate that single day into an entire year and we’ll come up with three hundred sixty-five twentyfour hour days. It’s still a fairly small segment of time in the grand scheme of things but still more than enough time for some changes to occur. Most of the changes that do transpire in our lives are hardly noticeable on a day-to-day basis but when you add them up over a longer period of time, they sometimes amount to something bigger than we might first have realized. Now think back to the very first day that you began any new endeavor in your life. Maybe it was your first day of school, your first time on a bicycle, your first time driving a car, your first saxophone lesson or whatever. Though significant as milestones in your life, chances are that you didn’t pay any particular close attention to the exact day or date that it happened. We usually don’t tend to remember those kinds of details, as though important, they don’t seem to be important enough to record either on paper or even just in our minds. On the other hand, the first day of other new endeavors are really etched into our brains and are pretty hard to forget

such as marriage (though some women might beg to differ with me on this), the day you quit smoking and began life as a nonsmoker, the day you first became a parent, etc. It seems that the older I get, there are fewer new endeavors that I undertake. Most of my “first times” are far behind me and I don’t imagine there will be too many more in my future. So, few and far between as they have become, each one that does occur seems to hold my interest pretty intensely — at least initially — until the next “first time” comes along. One of the last “first times” I experienced was almost two years ago when I took a home brewing class and learned how to make my own beer. I started small but in no time flat I purchased books and equipment and even sought out some home-brewing clubs, one of which I happily joined and whose meetings I attend faithfully. My most recent “first time” was back in January of 2013 when my

buddy Tom took me to a shooting range. Little did I suspect then that less than a year later I would be certifiably hooked on guns. Not just as an occasional hobbyist who only goes to a shooting range every once in a while and rents a gun for an hour or two but rather as a serious enthusiast who has embraced an affinity to firearms and owns more than just one or two. The very same kind of person who — that just less than a year ago — I would have been considered a gun “nut”. Now I wear that badge with honor. What a great hobby I have found! Gun Fact What goes up must come down. Unfortunately, there are some idiots out there who like to celebrate the New Year by firing some bullets into the air but fail to realize that these same bullets will ultimately come back to earth at a deadly rate of speed. Almost every year, people get killed this way — and often from distances more than a mile away. artie@citynewshound.com
