Beyond Q has quite a pedigree.

Independent optician offers personal service

Biggest book shop, by miles!

We are descended from one of Canberra’s oldest second hand and antiquarian bookshops. Browsing books can make even the most tenacious book lovers thirsty......

OWNER of Curtin Optical, Corey Nicholls, says that their independence from large chains gives customers “personalised service, quality, we go that extra step to be helpful and provide excellent product knowledge”. Having been a part of the Curtin community for 20 years, Curtin Optical has three experienced optometrists – Renita Chou, Susan Hallissy and Margaret McCreath – available for appointments from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Corey and his team stock a wide range of eyewear, contact lenses and accessories. “We cater to all tastes – from budget to wellknown brands,” says Corey. The range of designer sunglasses includes Bill Bass, Nike, Dragon, Calvin Klein and its latest addition Ugly Fish. It also offers mobile optical dispensing services – spectacle selections and deliveries to the elderly or people unable to come into store due to disability. This also includes spectacle repairs and adjustments, and an after-hours service. In addition, Curtin Optical offers an express service for those who have lost or broken their spectacles. In

SPEND some time exploring the bookshelves at Canberra’s largest bookstore, Beyond Q – Books, Bar, Barista, in the heart of Curtin. Beyond Q owner Simon Maddox likens the experience of exploring his bookstore to falling down the rabbit hole with Alice. “The whole atmosphere is ‘chillout’ – we’ve got a cafe where you can relax first before you explore our 4kms worth of bookshelves,” he says. Beyond Q has been in Curtin for 13 years and stocks a wide range of second-hand fiction and non-fiction books. This also includes rare books – some of which date back to 1515. They also have a collection of DVDs, LPs on vinyl and comic books. “Within two-three minutes, our staff can locate a book, which is rare in a second-hand bookshop,” Simon says. “There’s stuff in Curtin that you don’t find in any other shopping centres in Canberra.” As well as a bookshop and cafe, Beyond Q has regular events including live music, local book launches and book clubs. It’s little wonder it was named by Qantas as one of the top seven bookshops in Australia. Simon says Beyond Q is licensed for BYO and can also host functions from Christmas parties through to weddings.
