The Johns Creek City Council adopted the Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan at the March 28 City Council Meeting. The Strategic Plan prioritizes improvements to existing parks and programs and provides suggested improvements to enhance the recreation and parks system. The Strategic Plan is a reflection of a community-driven planning process that included interviews, surveys, community meetings, and social media interactions. More than 1,500 individuals participated in the planning process. The plan forwards an overall mission of ensuring a complete recreation and parks system that aligns to the goals and needs of the community. Efforts to fulfill this over arching mission are discussed as six goals: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Acquire Land Develop New Parks Utilize the Chattahoochee River Create Significant Loop Trails Provide a Wider Array of Programs Improve Existing Parks

Parks Plan

Recreation & Park Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan’s final chapter – Recommended Implementation includes key actions forwarding each of the goals and the priorities/time frames for building out different parks, recreational greenways and trails, operating costs, and programming. Although the city is energized from people who helped create the Strategic Plan, further input is needed from the community as we implement the plan. Some of the upcoming input opportunities relate to the programming and time frames for development of new parks. You can download a copy of the Recreation and Park Strategic Plan from the city’s website, www.johnscreekga.gov.

New Parks

New city pocket parks In addition to the city’s four main parks, the city has acquired land for three small neighborhood serving parks also known as pocket parks. The city wants your help in planning for the development of these future parks. Morton Road Park: a 4-acre property on the north side of Morton Road between Abberly Cove and Morton Chase Drive. Addressed at 4860 Morton Road. State Bridge Park: 4-acre property on the southwest side of State Bridge Road, south of Morton Bridge Lane and Windsor Park Drive. Addressed at 10610 State Bridge Road. Bell-Boles Park: 2-acre property just north of the Bell Road – Boles Road roundabout. Addressed at 10575 Bell Road.

Morton Road Park

State Bridge Park

Bells-Boles Park

The Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan’s top priority and top recommendation is the acquisition of additional park land. The City Council have acquired two key properties for future community parks. CAULEY CREEK PARK Located at 7255 Bell Road, the 133-acre property is on the southeast side of Bell Road, opposite Old Homestead Trail. From Bell Road, the property extends southerly to the Chattahoochee River where the full property has 1,923 feet of frontage along the river. The property is bordered to the west by Cauley Creek and to the east by the Rogers Bridge trail. The property is mostly open with some wooded fringe areas. Based on FEMA maps, approximately 10% of the acquisition property appears to be impacted by flood plain adjacent to the Chattahoochee River and Cauley Creek. Current improvements on the acquisition property include a single-family residence that fronts Bell Road, the Cauley Creek Water Reclamation Plant, and gently rolling to flat fields equipped with an irrigation/ spray system designed to disperse the treated, reclaimed water.

New Land

New Large parks

TECHNOLOGY PARK LINEAR PARK ACQUISITION Located on the east side of Medlock Bridge, between Johns Creek Parkway and East Johns Crossing. The 20-acre property is anchored by two lakes. The elongated, irregular shape of the property provides both improved accessibility (allowing multiple access points) and an ideal opportunity for a perimeter loop trail. The water provides a destination-type attraction and the existing sidewalk and trails around the lakes could be improved and connected to the Johns Creek Greenway along Medlock Bridge Road. The city needs your help to develop these properties into parks. Check johnscreekga.gov for the latest information and notices of public meetings for park planning.
