PROVIDED TO AGENCIES IN HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS

DEAR SUPPORTERS,

Economic indicators signaled an end to the recession last summer, but City Harvest knew that hard times would continue for New Yorkers forced to find a way to live on less income, either because of new unemployment or lower wages. Real recovery was still far in the distance, and more of the people turning to emergency food have become familiar faces. With the stakes higher than ever before, our focus for the past year has been on results, starting with the amount and quality of the food we provide to emergency feeding programs. Fresh produce made up 60% of the more than 28 million pounds of food we delivered to agencies – every pound of it free of charge. We grew our Healthy Neighborhoods program, expanding access to healthy food in target communities by supporting the launch of the new Echo Park Farmers Market in the South Bronx and working with Staten Island residents and community organizations to address barriers to healthy eating in the North Shore. Among our partners, more than 39,000 financial donors helped ensure that food from over 2,300 food donors could reach our network of emergency feeding programs that work on the front lines of hunger. New funding from Robin Hood, renewed support from the New York Times Neediest Cases Fund and The New York Community Trust, and strong alliances with corporate supporters like Citibank, Credit Suisse, American Express and Barclays Capital helped fill our food rescue trucks and bikes over the course of the year. At the same time, we joined forces with the NYC Health Department to boost the demand for nutritious food and forged alliances with fellow New Yorkers to ask the federal government to make needed improvements to the Child Nutrition Act. The outcomes you will read about in this report have only been possible thanks to a broad system of support — one which remains strong despite an uncertain future. Over the past year, New Yorkers have been united squarely behind City Harvest’s efforts to deliver results. On behalf of the communities we feed, thank you for helping City Harvest make a difference on a daily basis. Jilly Stephens Executive Director James D. Kallman Chairman, Board of Directors

During a difficult year, the City Harvest fleet put 28.6 million pounds of food in the hands of New Yorkers in the greatest need. Each month, our trucks logged 12,200 miles and food rescue bikes rolled in at 720 miles. Our entire fleet will employ the most current, environmentally friendly technology by the close of 2010 now that supporters have met the challenge from The Steven and Heather Mnuchin Foundation. A new gift from Robin Hood helped City Harvest boost our poundage by 1.1 million pounds, targeted to a special group of high-need agencies. The needs of the kosher-observant population were met with 2.3 million pounds of food. Day in and day out we continued to rescue and deliver the healthiest food possible. In addition to over 17.6 million pounds of fruits and vegetables that reached programs feeding the hungry, volunteers distributed more than 520,000 pounds of fresh produce at Mobile Markets held in low-income communities at Melrose in the Bronx and Stapleton in Staten Island. We delivered over 200,000 pounds of healthy snacks to 38 pre- and after-school programs serving 2,400 young children through City Harvest’s Fruit Bowl. Boosting the supply of fresh produce not only makes it possible for people to eat more fruits and vegetables — it changes the type of food people consume overall. An evaluation of our Melrose Mobile Market completed this year showed that 86% of participants have increased their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables since registering. Finally, City Harvest collected 1.7 million pounds of nonperishable food due to the generosity of nearly 1,600 individual food drives — from the Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry and High Holy Days food drives in the fall to the Feed the Kids, National Association of Letter Carriers, and Passover food drives in the spring. These drives helped keep food pantries stocked all year long.

BOOST DEMAND

City Harvest has seen firsthand what others have called the “hunger-obesity paradox” — diet-related diseases like obesity and diabetes concentrated in the same neighborhoods where poverty has pushed more people to emergency food. Our approach to providing residents with the resources they need has been twofold: increase the supply of healthy food in these communities while working at a grassroots level to build demand for it. Closing gaps in nutrition-related knowledge — teaching individuals and families living in low-income communities how to eat well — is key to our strategy to increase the demand for healthy food. Over the past year, City Harvest staff and volunteers taught 56 six- to eight-week nutrition education classes to help low income New Yorkers learn how to shop for and prepare healthy food on limited means. We helped launch seven ongoing cooking clubs at senior centers for graduates of Well Seasoned, City Harvest’s nutrition program designed to address the unique dietary needs of elderly New Yorkers. Nutritionists and chefs — including our own Food Council chefs — offered samples of healthy recipes created using produce available at 26 Mobile Markets, from tasty portions of Le Bernardin’s veggie fried rice to a delicious carrot, potato, and pickled onion salad courtesy of Gramercy Tavern. In support of the NYC Health Department’s Healthy Bodega Initiative, we staffed 21 cooking demonstrations outside bodegas with volunteer nutritionists and chefs preparing recipes made with fresh produce, low-fat milk, and whole grains available for purchase inside. We reached over 9,100 New Yorkers at risk for diet-related diseases with these demos. City Harvest’s Fruit Bowl, a uniquely-designed nutrition education program delivered in combination with healthy snacks, reached 2,400 kids this year, supplemented by activities for 280 parents and 14 eight-week courses for children and their parents. As a result, over three-quarters of Fruit Bowl sites report that their kids are eating more fresh fruits and vegetables — healthy lessons to last a lifetime.

FOCUSED EFFORT

City Harvest has been able to heighten our impact over the past year by directing resources where they can do the most good — both in meeting the need for emergency food and ensuring New Yorkers have the food they need on an ongoing basis. We have strategically invested in communities where hunger and diet-related diseases like obesity and diabetes are prevalent: the South Bronx, the North Shore of Staten Island, and Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn. Healthy Neighborhoods envisions communities where residents have a variety of nutritious food choices along with the knowledge they need to prevent diet-related diseases. Channeling more fresh food to these communities is the first step, and over the last year, City Harvest directed 7.7 million pounds of food to emergency feeding programs in these target areas, distributing an additional 520,000 pounds of fresh produce at Mobile Markets in the South Bronx and Staten Island. Along with cooking demos held alongside produce distributions, our Healthy Neighborhoods hosted 36 nutrition education courses out of the 56 offered in total throughout the five boroughs. To strengthen the capacity of our agencies to serve people in these high-need areas, City Harvest granted $150,000 to 14 programs within Healthy Neighborhoods in support of projects enabling them to provide emergency food in the safest, most efficient manner, and ultimately to provide more food — ranging from updating kitchen equipment, to adding refrigeration to store and distribute more fresh produce, to developing a formal volunteer program. The hallmark of Healthy Neighborhoods is our work with local residents, organizations, and community leaders which builds on existing community strengths to create new outlets for low-cost healthy food and improve existing ones. In July, we helped Harvest Home Farmers Markets, Inc. put down roots in Echo Park, opening a new outlet for lowcost fresh produce for a daily average of 150 Bronx shoppers.

STRONG PARTNERSHIPS

From the beginning, City Harvest has been known for linking New Yorkers who have food and other resources to communities in need. We continue to build partnerships that create the greatest impact, connecting food businesses and emergency feeding programs as well as likeminded organizations working to get more healthy food into poor communities. Our ability to collect over 28 million pounds of food depends on a diverse base of more than 2,300 food donors. Through HarvestWorks, City Harvest provides incentives for growers to harvest, pack, and deliver crops especially for hungry New Yorkers. City Harvest’s relationships with farmers have enabled over 2.2 million pounds of regional produce to reach the shelves of local agencies last year. Donations from eateries, including many of the city’s best restaurants, filled our trucks with close to 3 million pounds of fresh, healthy food. Building the strength of our partner emergency feeding programs helped ensure that this food reached people in need. For the second year in a row, this summer we gathered representatives from nearly 200 agencies for our annual Agency Conference to share best practices and learn new skills. Above and beyond our work rescuing food and supporting communities, City Harvest has been busy at the local, state, and federal level, working to increase access to healthy food in schools. This year, more than 85 organizations and individuals joined the NYC Alliance for Child Nutrition Reauthorization, a City Harvest-led alliance to improve federal nutrition programs. The group made three visits to Congress — along with City Harvest Food Council members on a Chef’s Day of Action — and delivered more than 4,000 letters in support of better school food. As a convenor of the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, City Harvest has helped to implement a Community Action Plan designed by local community groups to transform school food systems, improve community food environments, and promote active living and routine physical activity on an ongoing basis. This project has the potential to touch the lives of nearly 250,000 youth living in the focus area of Central Brooklyn in coming years.

BROAD SUPPORT SYSTEM

Critical support from more than 39,000 generous financial donors helped City Harvest remain a resource for hungry New Yorkers during especially hard times. In the fall, Horizon Media marked its 20th anniversary by asking clients and friends to fight hunger by purchasing advertisements to benefit City Harvest in a special edition of Adweek — celebrating present accomplishments by feeding our future. Over 200 Skip Lunch Fight Hunger teams put food on the table for kids over the summer months, proving the cost of a day’s lunch could add up to over half a million dollars. Four special events — An Evening of Practical Magic, Bid Against Hunger, On Your Plate, and Summer in the City — raised $2.5 million for City Harvest and raised the profile of the growing need for emergency food. Support from Barclays Capital and FJC, a Foundation of Philanthropic Funds, helped ensure that 100% of the ticket price for An Evening of Practical Magic could directly support the efforts of City Harvest to feed hungry New Yorkers. More than 2,300 food donors filled our trucks, whether making a daily donation or for a special occasion — such as the hundreds of schools that contributed to the Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Food Drive, which united the NYPD, the FDNY, the NYC Department of Education, and other New York institutions to raise more than 860,000 pounds of food. Over 2,200 volunteers from all walks of life answered City Harvest’s call for help. As part of our alliance with Citibank, employees repacked large shipments of produce into smaller bags for emergency feeding programs, helping to get over 100,000 pounds of fresh food directly into the hands of families in need. Eight tractor trailer loads of world’s finest food reached hungry New Yorkers thanks to volunteers from American Express, Barclays Capital, and Credit Suisse who hit the floor to collect food donated by exhibitors at the close of the 56th Summer Fancy Food Show. Our ability to respond to New York’s growing hunger problem continues to depend on the generosity of New Yorkers themselves. Last year proved that New York City — our city — remains committed to fighting hunger with City Harvest.

Now serving New York City for more than 25 years, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women, and children. This year, City Harvest will collect 28 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 300,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.
