Moving the Needle on Poverty One Family at a Time

Ellen heard about United Against Poverty from a local referral agency.

She was pregnant, lost her job and could not afford her rent or medical insurance after the first month of unemployment. She began living in her car and was suffering from a medical condition that threatened her life. She was desperate and agonizing over what her near future would hold. When she arrived at UP she was greeted by a crisis navigation team who listened and helped guide her through the critical steps to stabilize her crisis and referred her to the medical care, mental health, and emergency housing services she needed. Fortunately, a local homeless family agency accepted her into its residential program. Following the safe and healthy birth of her daughter, Amelia, she was motivated to enroll in the Success Training for Employment Program (STEP), a

three-phase workforce development program. United Against Poverty’s ultimate goal is to lift families out of poverty through a workforce development program that improves income through employment. Ellen wanted Amelia to have a better life. Graduating with honors from STEP Phase 1, a six-week, 120-hour curriculum, Ellen learned how to prepare a resume and interact in a job interview.

She earned job skills certifications and acquired emotional intelligence skills that would help her to maintain a job and progress in her career. When she landed a job (Phase 2) in November Ellen joined the 105 STEP participants

Moving the Needle on Poverty (January 1 - November 30, 2017) • 55 families were lifted out of poverty and 12 families reached economic self-sufficiency. • UP Member Share Grocery Program members retained a total of over $4 million. • 245 STEP Phase 3 participants are generating a combined total of $5.8 million in annualized income. • Busiest nonprofit agency in Indian River County - served over 600 families a day through a total of 19,345 services by providing crisis care and navigation, transformative education, food and household subsidy, employment training and placement, personal empowerment training and active referrals to other collaborative service providers.

selecting the products she wants and needs for a nominal handling fee.

who became employed during the first 11 months of 2017 and the 245 STEP participants who are currently working with a Success Coach. Now in Phase 3, Ellen is continuously transforming her life. Working with a STEP Success Coach, she is on a path towards a living wage job and working hard to repair her credit score, pay off her credit card balance and grow a savings account that will one day become a down payment for a home. To support Ellen’s path to self sufficiency, she became a member of the UP Member Share Grocery Program where she enjoys extending her grocery budget by nearly 70% and strolling Amelia down the aisles

Although Ellen’s story is as unique as she is, it represents a very common issue - how one incident can spiral into a crisis that leads to a life in poverty. From crisis navigation to transformational educational and workforce development opportunities to addressing the longterm nutritional needs of a growing family that is working to lift themselves out of poverty, Ellen’s story is an example of how United Against Poverty (UP) moves the needle on poverty one family at a time. I would like to invite all of you to take just a minute and remember your favorite childhood birthday...

children. Currently, there are over 1200 homeless children living on the Treasure Coast.

How old were you? Where were you? Who all was there? Was it special because of a rare gift you had received? Or, was it special because others had gone out of their way to make you feel loved on your birthday? What if you had never had that one of a kind birthday or had never had any birthday celebrations ever? Well, there are many homeless children living on the Treasure Coast that have never had the chance to experience a birthday celebration in their honor, and they are not looking forward to any in the future. They believe they are not special and that no one cares.

At this time, LBA provides birthday celebrations for the children residing at the Hibiscus Children’s Center, the Samaritan Center, the Hope for Families Center and Safe Space. We celebrate on average 12-14 birthdays per month. Each and every month we provide themed birthday parties with cake, games, fun decorations, goody bags and, of course, presents for the birthday children. Even though gifts are fun and exciting to open, LBA’s true mission is to provide a sense of honor and celebration for who these special members of our society are. Every child deserves to feel special on “their” special day.

For over three years now, LBA has joyfully provided birthday gifts and celebrations for our local homeless

A fresh new look: Change is happening at The Source The Source, a 501c3 non-profit Christian outreach ministry serving the homeless and working poor, recently received a fresh coat of exterior paint thanks to a donation from Sherwin-Williams in Vero Beach and over 20 local volunteers on United Way’s Day of Caring.

United Way volunteers painting the building

“The exterior paint looks amazing! We truly appreciate community partners such as Sherwin-Williams and the United Way of Indian River that invest in local nonprofits,” says Tony Zorbaugh, Executive Director of The Source. He adds, “ We’re sincerely grateful for the United Way volunteers priming the building and Sherwin-Williams donating the paint, materials, and hiring professional painters to complete the final coat.”

The fresh new look on the outside of The Source is another exciting change that has happened at The Source. Tony Zorbaugh was recently appointed the new Executive Director after serving as the Interim Executive Director and previously as the Director of Development. Tony brings a rich understanding of outreach programs to The Source in addition to his ability to build relationships within the community and compassion to serve others.

“As an organization, we help meet the basic needs of individuals with services such as food, daytime shelter, and showers. However, our deepest commitment is to partner with individuals who are willing to work hard and commit to changing their lives for the better. I look forward to The Source being an even greater catalyst for change in Indian River through our support of those individuals” – Tony Zorbaugh. The primary vehicle for change at The Source is the new Dining with Dignity Culinary program, formally the ServSafe Culinary program. The Dining with Dignity program is a 12-Week culinary apprenticeship and employment preparation program.

Dining with Dignity participant checking food

“Dining with Dignity combines classroom and hands-on learning experiences that increase the employability skills of participants. Those who participate in the program have the opportunity to receive simulated real-life experience through our restaurant-style dining where individuals are greeted, seated, and served to order.” – Chef Joe, Program Instructor. Additionally, Dining with Dignity is a pathway to employment in a local in-demand occupation. The program incorporates industry standard culinary training with financial literacy,

Chef Joe mixing seasonings in the rice

employment preparation, career exploration, and on-the-job training based on the individual needs of the person. “In the program’s first year, we trained 43 individuals, 23 obtained their food handler certification, and we assisted 18 individuals to become gainfully employed. This year we’re looking to build on that success to assist even more committed individuals to become self-sufficient and economically empowered” – Tony Zorbaugh. To learn more about The Source, including how to volunteer or to donate clothing or funds, please visit us in person at 1015 Commerce Avenue in Vero Beach or on the web at www.iamthesouce.org. We can also be reached by phone at 772-564-0202 or by email tony.zorbaugh@iamthesource.org.

James is a single father with custody of his two daughters after it was discovered that their mother was a heroin addict.

The Department of Children and Families placed the children in Foster Care, and James was able to gain custody. He was working and had his own place. Then, it was discovered that one of his daughters was hurting herself and talking about suicide. Since he was missing work as a result, he lost his job. He and his two daughters ended up living in the woods for over a year. James was referred to The Hope for Families Center in May 2017. While at the shelter, he has become fully involved in the program. He is currently employed. He has developed a budget and put money into savings. He has been diligently working toward his GED, and is scheduled to move into permanent housing January 1, 2018.

His daughters are stable. They are doing well in school and are involved in after school activities. The counseling and other support they have been able to receive through school and community programs has assisted them in overcoming social and psychological issues.

Indian River County has a population of approximately 151,000 residents. The last Point in Time count of homeless in the county done in January, 2017 indicated 592 homeless. Those numbers indicate those who were found and were actually counted. Between July 1, 2017 and September 30, 2017, The Hope for Families Center has housed 43 families, or 139 total clients. Of those, 89 are children, of which 38 are between newborn and 4 years of age. One hundred percent of the families have developed a budget, 65% of families are employed, 56% of the families have opened a savings ac-

count, and 40% have moved into permanent housing. Outcome data has demonstrated that 80% of our families to date have been able to maintain employment and housing.

The Hope for Families Center is the largest family shelter in the Treasure Coast. There are 21 four bed rooms. The shelter provides three meals a day, 7 days a week. All toiletries, bed linens, and laundry supplies are provided to the clients. If needed, diapers are provided for the children. In order to be accepted into the program the family must have at least one child under the age of 18. Adults must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Adult residents must be able to work, or be employed. The Hope for Families program assists clients in securing employment, if they are not currently employed. All are expected to complete chores. Rooms must be kept orderly. Clients complete a financial literacy pro-

gram, develop a budget, and must put away 75% of their net income. Case management works with clients on their credit report and credit history in order to improve any credit issues. Once residents have three months stable employment and have saved two month’s rent, our Rapid Rehousing case manager works with them to secure permanent housing. The length of stay for families currently averages approximately 155 days. The goal is to get residents employed and into permanent housing as quickly as possible.

All programs outcomes are measured and evaluated monthly. If you would like more information or to schedule a tour of The Hope for Families Center please contact us at 772- 567-5537 or www.hopeforfamiliescenter.org.

Restaurant Review:

American Icon Brewery -

transformed into an exciting gastropub

Historic diesel power plant in Vero Beach

By Marcela DelSolar & Beth Lieberman

New Year’s Resolution … If you find yourself feeling like your glass is half empty … Refill it, over and over again, at American Icon Brewery! This is a sophisticatedly industrial designed tribute to a Vero Beach iconic legacy. For those of you who have lived here forever, you can appreciate the almost never-ending anticipation of waiting for someone to turn the old diesel power plant into something other than a historically landmarked abandoned building. For the newbies and those who have recently entered the legal age of enjoying a great brew, you will just appreciate this cosmopolitan contribution that has turned “Zero Vero” into Brew-OH Vero! It’s 2:30 pm on a Tuesday, and the restaurant is full! I can’t remember the last place I have been to in Vero where

finding a parking spot in the middle of a weekday was challenging. And yet here I am, with my friend and fellow writer, Beth Lieberman. We have come for lunch and a pint (or two) to celebrate the last day of winter vacation. Let’s get down to business … I am hungry (and thirsty)! First up: (Sea) Salt and Pepper Calamari, served with a chili dipping sauce. Crisp, succulent strips of calamari are piled generously high and accompanied by red peppers. is snuggly enveloped in a light crisp batter. Perfect texture with just the right amount of spice. Beth orders the Icon IPA, a fresh, crisp body that delivers and quenches our thirst in between the mouthwatering bites. Thanks Brew Master Jesse for your amazing hand-crafted recipes! You truly know your craft well! Next up: The American Icon Burger is the ultimate burger experience - Thick, beefy and juicy! This welcome assault of your senses is rich brown on the outside, soft pink on the inside and topped with Applewood smoked bacon, and their “special” sauce. It is served with their signature cone of fries. Before you take a bite though, feast your eyes on the branded bun (with the American Icon logo!) Beth orders the 1926, a full flavored hefeweizen for us. With its authentic German effervescence, it is the perfect pairing with the Icon burger! Don’t leave this place without ordering the Salted Caramel Skillet. It’s a blondie served warm on a skillet, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with nestled chunky pieces of caramel and swirly caramel drizzles, and it is truly the most heavenly dessert I have tasted in Vero Beach!

Crispy Duck Wings and an Icon IPA

Bottom line: Ever so grateful for the renaissance vision that brought you here. It’s hip. It’s eclectic. It’s malty. It’s hoppy. It’s full-flavored. It’s full. (And so are we)!

Local Author Brings History to Life

IS BOOK READING ARCHAIC and not fashionable anymore? No, Klaus Schwanitz does not think so, and his many readers agree. For more than twenty years he owned ACT COMPUTERS, together with his son Juergen, who is taking this great business over and manages it with his reliable staff in a continuously professional manner. Born in the middle of the last century in Berlin, Germany, Klaus received a solid education in business. He worked independently as an entrepreneur and general manager for several large companies. In the 1980’s he worked in the field of Data processing centers with security equipment that fought against terrorism and dealt with preventing catastrophic events. A quarter of a century ago he moved to Pennsylvania to introduce advanced European security ideas and products to the United States market. Today he lives in lovely Vero Beach. Nevertheless, he still has enough time to let his imagination run free as he pursues his passion of writing. He started with some novels until he decided to focus more on serious matters of importance, like mankind’s history. This history buff revives old historical books, documentations, and accounts by bringing the almost lost and forgotten past back to life! With over forty books and many short stories there is sure to be something entertaining for you to find in his collection of writings. In his books you meet famous people of the past from different countries, kings, knights, noble and villains. He walks you from the deserts of Egypt

in KILLING THE DEITY to the whole of Europe in BATTLE OF HASTINGS, and takes you to the inner circle of King Edward III, the Black Prince, or the French King Jean, who spends years in custody in London after losing the battle of Poitiers in the HUNDRED YEAR WAR. This and many other true stories were recently published in twelve volumes! Are you interested in the Crusades? You have to look for CRUSADERS FOR JERUSALEM or KINGS CRUSADE. Do you prefer romantic and crime mixed together? Read SCOTLAND YARD ESCAPED, a lovely novel about Raffles, a gentleman thief and his girl-friend, who move to Australia and start a new life! Check out all of his interesting titles at AMAZON.COM or stop by ACT COMPUTERS (in the K-MART plaza) where you can find most of his books and where they have a special offer for you - one free book when you purchase any notebook! You can get in touch with Klaus at klausact@gmail.com.

What is Net Neutrality? Net Neutrality is the internet's guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. Net Neutrality means an internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that ISPs should provide us with open networks - and shouldn't block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn't decide who you call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn't interfere with the content you view or post online. The internet without Net Neutrality isn't really the internet.

What will happen to the internet now? Without the Net Neutrality rules, companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon would be able to call all the shots and decide which websites, content and applications succeed. These companies could now slow down their competitors' content or block political opinions they disagree with. They could charge extra fees to the few content companies that can afford to pay for preferential treatment - relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service. Net Neutrality is crucial for small business owners, startups and entrepreneurs, who rely on the open internet to launch their businesses. Without Net Neutrality, the next Google or Facebook will never get off the ground.

Mentoring Youth in Our Community Youth Guidance is dedicated to enriching the lives of Indian River County youth

through mentoring relationships that inspire trust, self-esteem and positive futures. We have instituted a Mentoring Academy and developed a unique approach to mentoring called Group Mentoring.

Through Group Mentoring, Youth Guidance works directly with children from low-income, single parent family homes to: 1. Build a path out of poverty, 2. Develop assets associated with successful adult lives, and 3. Ensure graduation from high school in high paying STEM based professions Group Mentoring is provided in our Mentoring Academy through group activities. We offer up to 16 different groups weekly, with a minimum of 8 children and a maximum of 20 children in each group. The groups are operated in six 8-week segments or “semesters” each year, and occur weekday evenings, Monday through

Friday, and on select Saturday mornings. Each mentoring group is comprised of children, mentors and at least one staff person (Group Leader). Group activities are led by an instructor/teacher/presenter, and children are guided by mentors. The mentor ratio is one mentor for four children, and each session is designed to ensure interaction between the children and their mentors. Youth Guidance has purchased the building where we occupied space provided by Indian River County for over forty years. The building will be historically preserved and renamed, “The Rita Dion Mentoring Academy.” Ms. Dion is the founder and first Executive Director of Youth Guidance. The Academy will feature the innovative Group Mentoring process, a Socratic approach to group activities with mentoring as its core component and will engender a transformational direction that will improve the future of underprivileged youth in the community, while correspondingly, impacting future economic improvement in Indian River County.

St. Paul’s Church is Faithfully Built by D. Lorne Coyle, MDiv

To escape King Herod’s wrath, Joseph took Mary and the infant Jesus and fled to Egypt. That much we know from the Gospel of Matthew as fact. Fancy embellishes that to show the Holy Family resting. Joseph is asleep on the sand, the donkey grazes, and Mary cradles the infant in her arms. The Savior slept in Giza of Egypt. altar and the font, and iron accents in unexpected places. Baptisms will use a real giant clamshell for the holy water.

Two thousand years later stone from Giza paves the floor of St. Paul’s Church on Flamevine Lane. Familiarly known as Jerusalem Stone, this rich pale stone adds to the patina of the new church. Did Jesus walk on this stone two thousand years ago?

Recently Senior Warden Bob Webster, aided by Pete DuBois, affixed the St. Paul Cross to the east wall. More than his usual precision, Bob seemed quiet, almost worshipful. The Holy Spirit was beginning to infuse the slab and cinder blocks.

Jan Jelmby of Helmet House Construction found the stone. He and his wife, Rhoda, had seen just such a floor at Christ Church, Jaffa Gate, in Jerusalem. He knew how powerfully God used it to ground the worshipper even as prayers ascend upward. The Rev. Jonathan Robbins, Rector, says that “…from the beginning our goal was to build a breathtaking holy space that would allow worshippers to experience the presence of God, to find that holy frisson.” With a soaring pecky cypress ceiling and English lancet windows, the whole sense is Godward, upward, forward. To that add touches of Vero’s beachside, with driftwood bases for the

Now Building Committee volunteer chair Toby Arnheim looks ahead, saying, “We’ve built the church; now we need to build the Church,” meaning bringing people to a closer walk with Christ. St. Paul’s welcomes all, beachside or mainland, who seek Christ.

Their philanthropy has touched countless people on local, regional and global levels. “Walter and Lalita Janke have poured their talent, treasure, strength, courage and an unmeasurable amount of time to assure the success of Camp Haven, caring for broken men in need of shelter, food, counseling, jobs, guidance and life skills training,” says Jim Kerns, Camp Haven board member. “They have established a new paradigm for giving and set an example for others to follow.” Please consider following their lead and donating to Camp Haven at www.camphaven.net, call 772-999-3625, or send a check to 3256 US Hwy 1, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Your donation changes the trajectory of not only the lives of desolate men committed to redesigning their fragmented lives, it also uplifts the lives of their loved ones.
