The city-centre shops are also open every Sunday from 13.00-17.00 h.
Culture in Roermond Roermond has a rich cultural history. It has been a diocese since 1559 and many authentic churches and other buildings can still be found in the city centre. Roermond is also the birthplace of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers. With his work including the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, many people consider him to be most important Dutch architect of the 19th century. His former home and studio now houses the Cuypershuis museum. The historic city centre features many charming squares where you can enjoy coffee and cake, a drink, lunch or dinner on one of the numerous lively terraces.
Water sports in Roermond Roermond is home to an extensive recreational area for water sports, called the Maasplassen, which is the largest of its kind in The Netherlands. The continuous network of large and small lakes, spanning approximately 3,000 hectares and connected to the River Meuse, forms a spectacular backdrop to all manner of water sports. A boat trip on the Maasplassen offers a refreshing change of scenery during a visit to the city centre. Trip boats depart from the Roerkade and/ or Arlo (Maashaven harbour).
