The availability of digital design techniques enables designers to control a high degree of complexity inherent to the construction process. With the aid of computation, parametric software and analysis tools architects can take advantage material and construction requirements to inform and develop design.

Location: The Red House Royal Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture Copenhagen

A new understanding of design will be explored within the workshop. We will look at external parameters driving design – context and data being sampled, evaluated, within a framework of flexible rules – crystallizing finally into the physical realm.

We will explore how a combination of local behaviour and digital fabrication can create specific artefacts and will strive to enhance the emergent affects in the design series.

Participants Workshops participant have experience in parametric strategies from a previous workshop or by self motivated learning from tutorials. They have knowledge in relational design strategies through lectures and readings presented by CITA and accompanied persons. The participants will team up in groups of 3.

Workshop program The workshop is design driven. The overall concept of behaviour and emergence will be explored in a hands on way by bridging the speculative of architectural concepts with simulation tools and digital means of production. A design task based on a concrete site and program will serve as starting point for the investigation, which will materialise in physical artefacts by the end of the workshops time. Within the course of the workshops groups will set in discussion with the team their focus on specific parameters, behaviours or elements in their conceptual framework.

Phases The workshop is structured in different phases: 1. Investigation of Site and program Stage 1 2. Concept proposal and analysis of the Idea 3. Generation of an understanding of the different layers of the design Stage 2 concept and translation into the core Geometry (Basic framework model in GC) 4. Exposure of the model to external parameters (Ecotect & Spreadsheets) 5. Development of complex behavior through component based eleStage 3 ments. Investigation in individual prototypes fabricated on digital fabrication tools.

6. Develop multiple component strategies and investigate irregular/emergent patterns 7. Bind of systems, Tweak Design 8. Generation of fabrication and presentation data 9. Fabrication and presentation Workshop output Groups can choose where to apply their focus and determine the quantity of drawings and physical models required to demonstrate their objectives.

Fabrication The workshop grants access to lasercutting and 3d Printing devices. An initial set of materials will be granted by CITA. The workshop will try introduce ideas of digital crafting (i.e. material and fabrication combinations that include CNC manufactured and physically form found)

Workshop Schedule 19.-23.November – Stage 1 (Martin, Jacob, Stig) Wednesday 19.11 14.00h Auditorium C4 Friday 20.11 9.00h Auditorium C4 A first phase will explore the requirements of the design task in a speculative manner.

These will be diagrammed and notated. An overall concept will be setup. This serves as reference for the rest of the workshops time, wherein certain aspects (light, depth of wall, filtering of view and light, spatial aspects, tectonics) will be emphasized rather than the overall proposal.

The first phase will result in diagrams, drawings and if possibly parametric setups of very general concepts. This research will be presented on the 24th and the starting discussion will lead up for the second phase of the workshop.

24.-26.November – Stage 2 (Martin, Jacob, Stig, Christophe, Volker) Start each day: 9.00h (usually with tutorials in the morning) Pinup: 18.00h each day In a second phase these requirements will be transformed in different parametric models. These models will be extrapolated and tested in small scale prototypes. Individual members of the group will concentrate on aspects of: • Scripting • Link to overall design • Component Design and fabrication These individual explorations will be brought together each day in public pinups. By doing so the groups will develop a specific take on the project with the groups individuals specialising on the compiled tasks A lecture and tutorials will enable everybody to take advantage of the broadened toolset, which can connect out of the box.

26. 26.-30. November – Stage 3 (Martin, Jacob, Stig, Christophe, Josh, Volker) Start each day: 9.00h (usually with tutorials in the morning) Pinup: 18.00h each day The different threads will be put together in a last phase, when the groups are asked to prove their investigations by setting up a link to fabrication and input / simulation tools.

For doing so a set of tools will be introduced Simulation (ecotect ) and Fabrication (Laser cutting and 3d Printing) A digital chain between parametric input, emerging form and making will become part of investigation in the third part of the workshop, when the focus will gradually shift to building elements, which can be detailed and realized as scaled prototype. The range can span between 1:50 to 1:1 and be produced on the workshops machinery.

30. November 15.00h – Final presentation (Martin, Jacob, Stig, Christophe, Josh, Volker + guests) The workshop will be presented and discussed in a public forum on Sunday afternoon.
