June 2009

Communities In Schools of the Midlands Success Celebrations 2009 Communities In Schools of the Midlands has established two Success Academies in Richland District Two at EL Wright and Dent Middle Schools. Success Academy students were identified as kids who were vulnerable to situations that would effect their progress and success in school. These students have participated in the programs since the summer of 2008 and have built leadership and character skills. They have also received tutoring and mentoring services provided by our volunteers and staff persons. The Success Coaches track the student’s progress in the areas of academics, tardiness, and disciplinary actions; all of which are critical to academic success. Final grades have not been submitted yet, however, both Success Coaches have reported positive changes in their students. Dent Success Academy students have shown about a 33% decrease in disciplinary actions and a decrease in tardiness. The team also holds an academic average of about 83%. EL Wrights Success Academy students have shown an overall decrease in tardiness and disciplinary actions. They also show that 97% of students will be advancing to the next grade level. All of the students have embodied positive character changes. You are invited to witness these changes! End of the Year Celebration dates are listed in the calendar of events.

Making A Sound Investment On May 7, 2009, Communities In Schools of the Midlands held a program to appreciate it’s volunteers. Mrs. Melissa Royalty, Assistant Principal at Dent Middle School, was the keynote speaker. She reflected on the “Sound Investment” that our volunteers have made on her students and the school atmosphere. Seven additional honors were awarded:

Back Packer Award to April Lewis and Rashida Hussain for being Outstanding Student Volunteers. • Two Jobs Well Done Award to Kadejah Pickering for being an Outstanding Professional Volunteer. • Little Engine That Could Award to Rick Ackerman for being an Outstanding Community Volunteer. • Behind the Scenes Award to Janet Bailey, Board President, for being the Board Member of the Year. • Jannie Stafford Award to Melissa Royalty for being an Outstanding School Faculty or Staff Servant. • Investing In Our Future Award to Plato’s Closet for being an Outstanding Business, Organization, or Church.
