When I joined Coversure I did not realise the sheer scale of the adventure and responsibility I’d undertaken. Was I miss-sold? Not at all; because although my role can be pretty challenging, it is also hugely rewarding.

I’m sure all of you, as Managing Directors, Directors or Partners in your businesses feel exactly the same. No two days are the same and every day you face a new challenge, but then every day there is a positive moment; a customer’s thanks for a job well done, watching a member of your team grow in knowledge and experience or winning a new piece of business. For me, my most positive moments come from you. You are why I am here.

I also know that everyday there are frustrations. But take a step back, helicopter up and think back 1, 5, 10 years and look at what you’ve achieved. I think, sometimes, we all forget just what we are all achieving. Whatever your motivation – be it a legacy, employing local people, serving your community or simply financial rewards – we all have different reasons for owning our own business but one common theme is that we want to do well, deliver our plan and really stand out – in essence, to sparkle.

When we were going through the management buyout process, we created what we called our ‘Sparkle Plan’.

Many of you have heard me mention the Sparkle Plan but for those that have forgotten or are unaware of it, this was – and still is – an integral part of how we want Coversure to evolve.

The Sparkle Plan includes elements such as building a team to help you achieve growth. Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) forms part of this as do Franchise Development Executives (FDEs), investment and development of our system as well as bold new initiatives such as software house integration like Applied CV and iMarket. It also focuses on our placement strategy, developing our own products and improving our products mix.

We will talk a lot about Sparkle over the weekend and we will try to articulate what we want to achieve and how we will deliver this with you. Some of our plans will take time, some are aspirational and other’s quick wins.

So how is the delivery of our Sparkle Plan going? Well you’ll see some new faces this year. Both Ed Hannan (CFO) and Jamie Evans (Head of Insurer Placement) joined us in November 2018 and Chris Woosnam (Mergers and Acquisitions Director) joined in January to deliver our M&A opportunities. We have still some recruitment to do, but we feel that we have a good senior team in place to drive the business forward.

M&A has been slow to start as it has taken a while to find the right person to lead this part of the businesses strategy. We have made some acquisitions and there have been some solid attempts to secure further purchases, though these have not yet come to fruition.

The placement strategy and IT road map are both underway and the teams will talk you through how they are progressing.

Adam has probably introduced you to the new FDEs, Lawrence and Anna, and they are here this weekend so please say hi and get a meeting in place. You’ll be glad you did.

Something that’s not an element of the Sparkle Plan, but remains very close to my heart, is the integrity of our business. Maintaining our strong values and preserving our culture is so important for our customers and all stakeholders. We have all worked far too hard to establish Coversure’s good name and I will, as the brand guardian, continually protect our well-respected reputation as good quality brokers. You’ll have read about three closures; Nuneaton, Banbury and most recently Maidstone. This is always disappointing to see, but the right thing to do when perspectives are not aligned.

In my article last year, I talked about what I wanted to achieve in 2018. Some of it has gone very well, other areas remain a work-in-progress, but the overarching successes are:

The management buyout was distracting for the senior team and the combination of the MBO, delivery of certain strategies and the closure of offices has all impacted on our growth this year. That said, reading the press and speaking to other brokers, many have actually gone backwards this year, stayed flat for many and a few have managed single-digit growth. Consumer uncertainty, Brexit and SMEs reducing their costs have all impacted our sector.

So How Have We Faired?

Growth in GWP has increased from £115m GWP to £119M an increase of 3% – a very good result given the challenges.

Retention sits across the group at 76% up from 74% last year, though for many of you, your renewal retention will be far higher. This statistic looks at all products types including short-term policies.

We are a family that is stronger together and we all want to run businesses that we can be proud of.

Before I sign off I would also like to mention new faces within franchising. We welcomed Joanne Jackson from Cannock who opened in April, and a familiar face Aaron Hodson as he took the leap to open his own office in Castle Donington. There are others in the pipeline and we’ll update you when these go live.

Sarah has been putting the sparkle into Coversure since joining us in 2014 as Marketing Director. In March 2016 she became Coversure’s first female Managing Director. Sarah’s immense capabilities, boundless energy and determination to succeed make her one of Coversure’s greatest jewels.

Ed joined as Group CFO in November 2018 and leads finance and acquisitions. Ed is a Chartered Accountant and has a history of success within insurance across a variety of finance, strategic and corporate development roles, most recently as Finance Director for the UK Commercial Lines division at RSA.

Bob is our Group CEO. Bob started in the banking industry where he held various board positions at blue chip institutions. Having led the recent MBO he is determined to unlock the business’s extraordinary potential and usher in an era of even greater success for all members of the Group.

Cheryl is our CTO. The retail industry has given her a different perspective on technical solutions and Cheryl is using this to transform the Datamatters’ system. Her considerable efforts will facilitate growth in your business while Cheryl adds glitz and glamour to the Datamatters’ office.

Born on the Wirral, one thing that didn’t leave him during the move south was his love for Everton FC.

Carl is our Group Risk & Compliance Director. His knowledge and experience of the Group means he really understands how to ensure compliance isn’t a burden but a benefit. Carl works closely with RWA and ensures our compliance framework remains robust and ensures our relationship with the FCA is a happy one.

Jamie joined Coversure in December 2018 as Head of Insurer Placement. Jamie joined from Zurich General Insurance where he had been for 14 years working in a number of senior sales and distribution roles. His dazzling talent will prove crucial in helping us to achieve our growth targets.

Have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a Franchise Development Executive? As we are the conduits between your office and Head Office, we thought we’d give you an insight as to what an average day looks like for us as we beaver away to help your business grow.

We then visited the office and spent some time with each team member observing their daily routines, processes and how they interacted with clients. Once we’d done this, we created a report outlining how each staff member’s day panned out, what they were doing, how they were doing it plus any feedback that the team member wanted to give.

The Franchise Development team are a very experienced bunch, having worked in the insurance industry for a combined total of almost 80 years. Between us, our knowledge covers sales, customer service, claims and underwriting. Crucially we’ve all worked as insurance brokers so we understand the challenges you face, as we’ve all experienced them. Now we’re here to help you run your business, get the most out of your teams and help you provide the best possible service for your customers.

The recommendations in the report highlighted improvements that could be made in the structure of the business along with processes that could be undertaken more efficiently. As a result of the review, the business has a new office manager, all staff have clearly defined job roles, are more motivated than ever before and have a fresh sense of direction. We also recommended that they make their processes more automated and less paper-reliant. This has led to greater efficiencies, higher levels of productivity and, crucially, they have also made cost savings. With of our recommendations implemented, they can expect to see a prosperous 2019.

As you know, we’re always on hand to support you, so in this article we’d like to give you a little more insight into the development side of our role as this is the area that really helps us to understand what you need to help you grow.

Process Reviews Development comes in many forms and sometimes the best way to grow your business is by improving what you do and how you do it. One way that we can help with this is by carrying out a process review. This involves looking at your operations so we can take a helicopter view of things and suggest tweaks and improvements that aren’t easy to see when you’re in the thick of it.

When we conduct a process review, we will first establish what it is you want to get out of it and specific areas you want us to look at. The following case study arose after we received a request from a franchisee asking if we could spend some time with their staff to suggest ways of improving productivity and increase sales.

Prior to the visit, the FDE asked for some background on their staff – job role, areas of expertise, length of service etc. We then coupled this with the performance management information for each staff member to give us a good understanding of the individuals, their skills and development needs.

Business Planning One of the things we enjoy most is helping you with your business plans. Not only will we help you put it together but we will regularly review it with you. It never ceases to amaze us how far businesses can come in-between reviews. It’s so easy to get immersed in the day-to-day that you often don’t get time to look at what you’ve achieved and where you should go next, and business planning provides the perfect opportunity to do this.

To start a business plan, we’ll ask you to get back to basics.

What is it you want to achieve? What is working well and what are the challenges you are facing? We’ll then look in detail at your current figures, including things like your new business conversions and renewal retention rates.

This helps us to see where your quotes are coming from and if they are profitable. We can even drill this down to individual staff members’ accounts to see how they are performing for you. Cross-selling is a key part of any successful business and we will also spend some time with you to discuss what type of products the team could be cross-selling based on your book’s mix.

We will also look at income and by working with the Products team, we can help to ensure that you are using the best available markets and taking advantage of the consolidation deals the team have put in place. This will not only help you improve your margins, but ensure that your customer is getting the best possible cover and service.

We shall also work with Marketing to explore the opportunities within your area. Some of this work is done before the visit through things such as data counts and looking at local business news sources, and we’ll also look at your business’s surroundings on our drive in to see if we can spot any opportunities locally.

Follow Up Perhaps most importantly of all, we will ensure that all actions are followed up and that plans are reviewed. We know how busy you all are and sometimes – even with best intentions – it’s easy to get distracted by the here and now. It can be a lonely place running your own business but we like to assure our franchisees that they are never alone. There is always someone to help and support you so you can focus on what’s important to you and your business growth. So, if you need us; call us!

A planning visit is usually done within a 2–3 hour window and then it’s back to H.Q. to type up the notes and start to coordinate the outcomes. We’ll work with all the relevant departments in the weeks following the meeting to ensure that any actions we have identified are carried out. We will then follow up with you to make sure everything is moving forward and agree any further touch points.

Consolidation

Broker Insights

April 2018 saw the implementation of Coversure’s Product Placement Strategy. Those of you that attended the Franchise Forums will be aware of the work we are doing to support you through this process of consolidation. During these forums we spoke in great detail about the benefits of consolidation. Firstly, we touched upon how consolidation came about through the challenges of the soft market and why insurers are so keen to assist Coversure with improving their product range and propositions. A good example of this is how insurers spoke in-depth about increasing levels of indemnity, of providing bespoke, market-leading cover and providing a dedicated service.

To support this journey, we have begun to work with Broker Insights. This is a platform that merges industry knowledge with technological expertise to unlock commercial insurance market data and which complements our existing systems and relationships. This enables insurers to have the right conversations at the right time with our offices to the benefit of your clients. Broker Insights allows opportunities to be visible for insurers so that they can cost-effectively serve more of the market. This levels the playing field for our offices by increasing visibility among our key partners and by gaining access to their products. The advanced data provided by Broker Insights will allow your office to develop a stronger insight and understanding of your business too, which will be pivotal in assisting you through this consolidation exercise.

Currently Coversure are faced with the challenge of working with 175 insurers. We can only imagine how difficult it must be for you to know our providers’ products and propositions, let alone be able to confidently sell these products to your customers. Therefore, we have invested a lot of time and effort in reviewing the Coversure book of business across all offices. As a result of this we have finalised our key partner panel and by working with these insurers more closely, the aim of the group is to reduce the provider panel from 175 to 100 by the end of 2019.

Through consolidation the aim is to achieve market-leading cover from strong and reputable insurers who will be there in your customer’s time of need. This consolidation exercise will provide Coversure with greater leverage with our providers, give us access to better products and lead to increased income levels for you.

Product Placement Throughout 2019 our aim is to provide updates on the product placement strategy, and by working closely with the Franchise Development Executives, our key partners risk appetite and bespoke deal propositions will be regularly shared with you.

Rationalise, innovate and prosper; these are the strategic values of the product development team. By keeping these values at the forefront of everything we do, we will ensure that we are delivering the competitive advantage you need to drive your individual businesses forward.

There’s a saying in IT circles; if you’re standing still, you’ve already fallen behind. Since I joined Datamatters I’ve made it my mission to keep us going forward and make this jewel in the Coversure crown sparkle. As a team we have huge plans for the future, but before I get on to them, I’d just like to take a quick look back at what the Datamatters team have delivered for you in 2018.

2018: A Year Of Big Changes Compliance was a big focus for us with changes required for the IPID, IDD and GDPR legislation, requiring significant changes to our systems, documentation and processes – not to mention an extension to our acronym dictionary!

In addition to this, we completed a massive piece of infrastructure work in moving all of our servers to the Cloud. This has provided us with a much more robust, resilient and secure platform on which to take the business forward. In a world where cyber-attacks are becoming more prevalent and more damaging, this was a business-critical advance that will help safeguard us all.

In the latter part of the 2018 our focus was on delivering imarket and Applied CV. This has seen the delivery of numerous products and improvements including; an enhanced user interface and improved letters for new business, Applied CV, Argo Cyber Liability, Document Portal updates, the list goes on and on…

What’s Coming In 2019?

2019 will be the year of process improvement and we will be implementing the ITIL framework to our support team. In case you have forgotten ITIL – IT Information Library – is a framework that brings a much more efficient and structured approach to service delivery and IT operations. By implementing it, streamlining processes and by delivering our other initiatives such as regular software release cycles, a new and improved self-service for logging support calls and the IT User Group – we can be more responsive to your needs, help you grow your businesses and generally operate more efficiently.

We’re also excited to be embarking on our two-year IT strategy project. This will encompass system integration plans that will help us build closer links with insurers and software houses – dramatically reducing re-keying while enabling a wider range of competitive products to be presented to you through the system. Our plans also include enhancing the user experience by enabling access through web portals and improving our management information capabilities.

Last, and by no means least, we are in the process of rolling out a new telephony solution across the Group. This provides full call recording capabilities, PCI compliance and is hosted on a more secure platform that has far greater stability and back-up capabilities. This new service will be available soon and we’d strongly encourage you to take advantage of it.

Last year we said that 2017–18 will go down as a year of tumultuous upheaval in terms of regulatory change and internal development. Looking back, I think it’s safe to say that this was true but we got through it. Maintaining the highest standards of compliance remains essential to the smooth running of your business and it will be central to us achieving our collective plans for sparkling growth.

2018 saw some really significant compliance changes. The implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) were both huge pieces of work which have resulted in changes to almost everything we do. You will have seen numerous changes to your documentation, scripts, TOBAs, websites, training, systems… you name it, these changed it.

As the FCA continues its focus on culture and governance, we too will look to our culture and associated values and we will be working hard this year on continuing to embed these into the business.

What Can You Expect In 2019?

Well the good news is that you will all become compliance experts! We have been working on a series of training modules which, once you have completed them, will give you the tools you need to keep your business fully compliant. We shall, of course, continue to ensure the compliance regime within the Group is robust yet proportionate, and we will continue to hold your hand every step of the way.

We also thought it was about time we gave the compliance health check format a refresh. From here-on-in there will be greater focus on governance including decision making, reporting and control. Watch this space…

In a similar vein, the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SMCR) comes into force on 9 December. This will bring changes to the governance of firms, their directors and senior managers. Adhering to this will be straightforward as it focuses on management and their responsibilities, though we will provide full guidance and be on-hand to help you through the transition.

Compliance Engagement We launched Project Green in 2017 and we now have nearly 60 offices signed up to the premium package. 2018 saw the introduction of Compliance Engagement which seeks to provide additional support to you where it’s required. Since the launch of these initiatives we have seen a marked improvement in compliance performance across the Group, so if you would like to know more then please talk to the team.

Firstly, introductions…I’m Ed and I joined Coversure as Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in December.

Before joining the group, I was Finance Director for the UK Commercial Lines business at RSA Insurance, which included responsibility for the regional commercial broker business, including mid-market and SME. Prior to that, I spent a number of years in CFO roles overseeing fast growth insurance businesses across emerging markets, from Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, to Asia.

I love working with ambitious, growth-oriented, quality businesses, and I’ve found exactly that in Coversure. The Sparkle Plan is exciting. It represents the opportunity that our new ownership gives us to grow the business in ways which may not have previously been possible. We have supportive investors who want us to succeed and they are giving us all the backing we could have hoped for.

So what role will Finance and Accounts play in making Coversure sparkle? And what are my priorities? Well I think I can sum these up as: 1. Providing excellent franchise support The franchise model remains at the heart of our business, and I know that Finance and Accounts play an important role in keeping the engine running smoothly. I’m committed to ensuring an effective relationship with all our franchise offices.

2. Continuously improving what we do Some of our processes and ways of working are outdated and inefficient. With new investors, we have the opportunity to invest in improving them. You’ll hear more from me on this over the coming months.

3. Supporting growth We need to maximise the opportunities that come with being backed by private equity. One of those opportunities is through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), which I’ll be looking after. I will be working closely with Bob and Sarah and our new M&A Director Chris Woosnam to help grow your business through acquisitions. This could be a real game changer for franchises, so if you ever want to discuss options, please get in touch.

4. Solving problems Sometimes, of course, all that glitters is not gold (I hope you’re following my sparkle theme?). Our job in Finance and Accounts is to put the right policies and controls in place, to help identify issues (ideally before they occur!), and work to solve them with you.

So, there’s plenty to do but I firmly believe that Coversure is on an exciting journey, and it’s great to be a part of it. I’ve enjoyed meeting many of you since I joined the Group, and I’m looking forward to spending time with you all over the course of the Conference. 2018. It was the year that Marks & Spencer rebranded to Markle & Sparkle for a weekend to celebrate the Royal Wedding. The Houses of Parliament rebranded (not that anyone noticed or cared) and so did John Lewis (and a lot of people cared!). Most importantly, however, it was the year that I rebranded my business to Coversure Insurance Services (Falkirk) and celebrated opening the first Coversure franchise in Scotland.

Having spent my entire career in the insurance industry, I took the leap to go self-employed in April 2013. A few years later, I had built up a decent client bank and was keen to grow my business. Alas I was finding it difficult to balance the demands of administering my brokerage and doing what I enjoyed most – writing business. In 2017 I began looking for alternative ways to operate which is when I discovered Coversure.

Coversure – An Opportunity To Shine For me, the benefits of becoming a Coversure franchise were immediately clear. What I particularly liked is that each franchise operates independently and focuses on the areas of business that they want to shine in. As a community-focused business, this particularly appealed to me. There are no centrally imposed targets forcing franchisees to look for business in areas they don’t want to write, which offers freedom and means that no two Coversure offices are the same.

I could see that this local autonomy was underpinned by the fantastic services provided centrally by Coversure from Head Office in Huntingdon. I wanted more support with compliance, accounts, branding and marketing. Coversure has a great team who are able to help in these areas; full of knowledge and experience and friendly and easy to deal with. Crucially, they had access to a wide range of insurance companies and agencies that I couldn’t necessarily guarantee on my own. All this made the decision to join an easy one.

Cracking Open The Champagne In January 2018, we cracked open the bubbly and reopened as the first Coversure franchise in Scotland. That first day was both exciting and terrifying. We had moved to new premises and rebranded. Now there were new systems to learn, equipment to set up and new contacts to meet – all while providing our existing clients with the level of service they expected. With a book of existing clients, cases had

to be transferred and renewal business had to be rewritten immediately. For the first few weeks I felt like the Greatest Showman, juggling fire, spinning hoops and jumping obstacles – Hugh Jackman eat your heart out! But this is insurance not showbiz, and this is me, so there was a suit and a laptop instead of a spangly jacket and a ringmaster’s top hat.

2018 – A Sparkling Performance In the first 12 months as a Coversure franchise my business has turned in a sparkling performance. A 10% growth in sales in the first 12 months more than exceeded my expectations, especially as our focus was on achieving a smooth transition for our existing customer base. The help and support from the Coversure Head Office team played a major part in helping us keep our existing customers happy and attract new clients in a period of major change. Expert advice was always on hand and while Falkirk is many miles away from Huntingdon, it really did feel like there was a of team of people next door ready to assist and guide me.

Looking back, I’m really happy with my decision to join Coversure. I’m able to write the business that I want to and it’s been possible to place more unusual risks quickly thanks to the network of contacts they have provided. I’ve developed my business the way I’ve wanted to while having the support and backing of a large organisation behind me.

A Bright Future Diamonds are formed under great pressure. After a first year that was challenging at times, we’ve polished off the rough edges of our new business and we’re rapidly heading towards the 1,000-policy landmark. The value of being part of Coversure is clear.

Now, in 2019, our focus has shifted to securing more new business meaning that it really will be our time to shine!

This is my fourth Coversure Conference brochure piece – I know, I don’t look old enough – and the theme of ‘sparkle’ set me thinking. Initially it set me pondering about some of the sparkle we are planning to add to your marketing in the coming year. The much-vaunted Progressive Web Application (PWA), the enhancements we are making to our automated email capabilities, our massively strengthened search engine optimisation (SEO) prowess and our ever-expanding social media offering to name but a few.

Social Means Business

All these developments are exciting and will prove essential to us fulfilling our remit to you, that of driving leads.

Focusing on them in isolation, however, is to miss an essential, unifying element. It is to ignore the vital spark that will allow these innovations to sparkle and shine. In short, it is to overlook my amazing team.

PR – Start Spreading The News…

The importance of people runs through the ‘Sparkle Plan’ like the word Brighton through Brighton Rock, and rightly so. Platform automation is rife in marketing and clever solutions to previously laborious tasks are springing up everywhere. We’re wholeheartedly embracing these technologies but without losing sight of the value of the human factor. So, in this latest piece I’d like to not only update you on what’s to come in 2019–2020, but also to recognise the team that will make these innovations sparkle.

SEO: Your Best Friend, Our Greatest Challenge Over 98% of all Coversure’s traffic comes from organic – that is unpaid – sources, so getting our SEO right is hugely important. Unfortunately, it’s also hugely complex, ever-changing, massively competitive and labourintensive. Luckily within our ranks we have SEO strategists, copywriters and developers who spend hours ensuring that everything is working as hard as it can. Leading this effort is the redoubtable Nathan. A veteran of an SEO agency, he comes armed with his passion for search and with his new tool, SEM Rush, he will lead us to ever better rankings, traffic and leads this year.

It only seems like five minutes ago that I was writing the last article for our Conference brochure. How time flies when you’re having fun! 2018 was certainly action-packed with plenty of developments to keep the Franchise Development team on their toes.
