Using ancient Roman mosaic techniques, Cirencester College’s ‘Art for the Community’ students have produced a magnificent vibrant pop art inspired abstract mosaic. The mosaic has taken pride of place in entrance to the Business School Centre, based at the Castle on Cecily Hill. The artwork was commissioned by Richard Ashwood, Director of Business Training & Development. Richard says, “Representing the diversity of learning in the community and at work was a real challenge. The mosaic captures this perfectly and is simply inspirational. For me a mosaic format represents the myriad of elements involved: people, their ideas and the various ways learning can be fulfilled; this is what Cirencester College’s adult learning is all about”. The mosaic artwork will be on display in the foyer of the Castle, adding colour and inspiration as students arrive for their classes, “It is fair to say that this piece of art is certainly inspirational”, says Debbie Stirling (art tutor). Debbie goes on to say, “It was very difficult to start this as the students were working with the concept

of learning and the college being inclusive, but once the students got going the transformation from concept to finished work was nothing short of spectacular”. The students who produced the artwork are Joan Ballantyne, Jenny Bharucha, Jeanette Brunton, Rosie Dundas-Gray, Katerina Pasternak, Tina Prewett, Mikako Sakurai, June Telling, Clare Williams, Bernie Harding and Clare Pywell. A group of students are currently working on providing artwork for the Paternoster school sensory garden and next term the students will be working with Cirencester open air pool. Anyone interested in joining this free course which starts Friday 23rd April (9.30-11.30am) for nine weeks, should call Cirencester College Enrolment Office on 01285 626262.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships Key Facts

Who are they for? You can use Apprenticeships to train both new and existing employees. Funding may be available to train apprentices over 19.

1 There are more than 190 types of Apprenticeships ranging from accountancy to textiles, engineering to veterinary nursing, business administration to construction. 2 Funding for Apprenticeships has increased by almost a quarter between 2007/08 and 2009/10, to over £1 billion. 3 New starts have increased from 65,000 in 1996/97 to 225,000 in 2007/08. In the first nine months of the 2008/09 academic year there were 196,600 new Apprenticeship starts, an increase of 15% on the same period in 2007/08. 4 Since 1996/97 there have been more than 2 million Apprenticeship starts. 5 By 2020, the target is to have 1 in 5 young people undertaking an Apprenticeship.

Who runs them? Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills Councils (part of the Skills for Business network), while the National Apprenticeship Service helps to fund the training.

There are thousands of apprenticeships advertised on Apprenticeships vacancies every week. This is the online system where candidate can quickly search and apply for positions at apprenticeships.org.uk

Apprenticeships – Good for Business 1 80% of those employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive. 2 81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices. 3 The minimum wage for apprentices is £95 per week. Many employers prefer to pay more however, and research shows that the average salary is approx £170 per week. 4 Employers who take on a 16-18 year old apprentice only pay their salary. The Government will fund their training. 5 Over 100,000 employers offer Apprenticeship places in over 190 job roles across a wide range of sectors. 6 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce. 7 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their Apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future. 8 One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate. To find out more about how apprenticeships can make a difference to your business, contact Trina Sheridan on 01285 656502.

Apprenticeships - Frequently asked questions So, what are Apprenticeships? They are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to national recognised qualifications.

How are Apprenticeships developed? Business representatives from the relevant industry sector work with the Sector Skills Councils to develop the course content. Because they genuinely understand your business, the training will be relevant for your industry Where do they take place? This is up to you. Most of the training is ‘on the job’ at your premises. The rest can be provided by a Cirencester College Business School What does the training provider do? Cirencester College Business School will provide an employer representative who will be able to support and guide you. We will work with you to: • help you decide which Apprenticeship is right for you; • explain the way that Apprenticeships might work for you and if funding is available; • agree a training plan with your apprentice; • recruit an apprentice or support your existing staff into Apprenticeships; • manage the training and evaluation; • ensure that national quality standards are met; • deliver integrated, coherent training. What are my responsibilities as an employer? You must give your apprentices an induction into their role and provide on-the-job training. You are also responsible for paying your apprentices’ wages. Will there be a mountain of paperwork? No. There is a need to ensure that the training provided is of a high quality, and that the public funding provided is used for training – but this is not a bureaucratic process. What do I do next? Contact Trina Sheridan at Cirencester College Business School on 01285 656 502 or send an e-mail to tls@cirencester.ac.uk.

Cirencester College Charitable Trust you can make a difference The Cirencester College Charitable Trust exists to provide additional resources for the life and work of the College.
