Osprey Head Etching 11 x 15 in.
“When I began the thrust of my work in the 1960’s, it was a time when life and death seemed intermingled. We were bombing in Vietnam, I was bringing up my son, and we were going into outer space.... it made me ask very essential questions. This led to my absorption with the beginning of living creatures, human and other. Starting with amorphic biological forms, the work developed in a bifurcated manner to include the worlds of Insects, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds as well as human images, not all necessarily benign. For these purposes, I also developed my own method of combining wire with liquid poured polyurethane and a variety of acrylics first in reliefs and now in sculpture.”

“The heartbreakingly beautiful mess of cultures, spiritualities, shared histories and epic landscapes this world offers is why I make work. I’m moved by the ways our beloved planet has been worshipped and defiled and the ability for it to come back again and again with its Eastern cathedrals of forest and panoramic horizons of the West. Living in a cut and paste culture, surrounded by the ruins of monstrous historical injustice, I am weary of technology and its cancer-like proliferation. I am drawn to the act of wandering throughout the American West, where time is on the loose and one is reminded of our seemingly endless penchant for violence.”

As an ongoing problem in the industrialized world the human race gets more lonely and alienated, the world turns faster and people are busier than ever; working, making a career, making a family. It is in this world where the sick and weak humans live in the margins of society in isolation, loneliness, and alienation. With inspiration from his own life, Danny Germansen’s work speaks about people who are down and out without the possibility to save themselves. “The mentally ill and physically challenged are not able to follow the modern society. No one thinks about these people, and they are on there own, sometimes caught in a life full of pain. Some choose suicide as their last resource.”

I have returned to them again and again in the last decades, changing them progressively to meet my vibrant vision of France as the technology available to me has advanced. His abstract visions are conveyed through concrete objects, which he transforms into his unique multi-layered paintings. His technique involves an intense deconstruction of all the layers out of which his vision and impressions of it are born, gradually beginning to add detail. “The main work happens before I reach for a brush. Flying Towards Eternity Mixed media 24 x 30 in.
“My paintings emerge out of the process of materials that I use. I begin the paintings by layering the surface with many layers of Venetian plaster over a birch plywood surface. This material contains marble dust, lime and plaster. It is a variation of the frescos used in Italy. By layering the plaster and compressing the material, the plaster builds a polished shine. The force of the compression of layers reveals a crosssection of materials, as the layers in the earth through the passage of time. Line and color are very important to me. I want the line to flow and not look like it is copied or stiff. I wish to show the space between layers where there is mystery.”

We are under the influence of mass media, and we forget that we have the ability to choose the life that we like and take responsibility for our actions.”

“As intuitive painter and poet, emotions, colors, and composition are the fundamentals of my art; soul and inner memory guide me. My recurrent themes are world-impacting events, storytelling abstracts like poems, color vibrations in sequences of defined lines, moments in time surging from inner memories after long maturation or the urge to be translated on canvas, techniques, and media the means to do so. Painting since the age of 12, creativity is vital and has been increased by my life’s tragedies and various events.”

“I always wanted to be an artist and was taught privately when very young by an amazing artist who challenged me to try using all mediums and to use my imagination to create a unique style. Living on the coast in a beautiful town allows me to draw inspiration from my immediate surrounds as well as the bushveld on travels. I am seduced by all of Africa, the people, landscapes and the sea. My paintings, therefore, vary in size, medium and subject matter. I try to create a mood using either thin washes, brushwork or a pallet knife depending on size and subject matter. The substance of paint with careful use of color, tones, and light needs to be transformed into an image that invokes a mood or reaction to the image. I want my viewers to “feel” something. My portraits need to show the emotion behind the subject.”

Freedom from boundaries opens possibility in the form of the medium and the breadth of the artist to reveal wholly new ways of seeing.
