Découverte, 2017 Oil on paper 32 x 24 cm

“Artist/Painter, born 30.07.1957 in Valais, Switzerland, Rene Berrut exclusively works with oil painting; long worked, a beauty that is selfsufficient, whose energy is captured by the effect of colors vibrating enigmatically and changing. You have to look closely, be captivated and perceive symbols. We are far from a gestural art, spontaneous -it is not an innocent painting. But it is interesting to know how Berrut works. He does not start a painting by drawing. He makes sketches of sorts, on a small notebook, with zones of color. He knows how to maintain a balance, in the delicacy of his work.” - Pierre Hugli PH + Art

I’ve heard that art has for many years been controlled but is nowadays in another era of freedom. The biggest inspirational source for me is simply mother nature, that has a variety of different colors. “The sole intention of my artwork is to communicate the unknown in our subconscious mind; to find the connection with our true selves - which I believe is something common we all possess. Another goal is to create artwork that would be a kind of new, original work expressing oneself in terms of artistic form within abstractionism. I am interested in the pure logic of interconnection of certain images which was aroused unintentionally in the process of painting. “I was born into a family where art and culture were important and had been for generations. I imbibed an early appreciation of the arts from our immediate environment from as far back as I can remember. Poets and artists came and stayed for extended periods doing family portraits. I remember watching spellbound as they worked with brush, knife, and pallet. My parents recognised my interest and inclination and encouraged me to paint. I have not looked back since. In time people around me began to recognise my special gift. At first, the recognition was locally confined to school and college fetes, functions and exhibitions. “I was born in Luxembourg on September 2nd, 1960. Since my early years of high school, my passion for mathematics and figurative compositions has led me to develop my art with the technique of embroidery. At first, I embroidered my jumpers with designs of my own creation. Then, at the end of my schooling, I started producing geometric figures and experimented with the half cross-stitch technique, playing with vibrant colour tones. Since 2010, I have been creating paintings with art and design computer programs. The knowledge of these software packages has allowed the creation of canvases with colours and shapes that were not possible with the half cross-stitch technique. The ability to use digital art tools allows me to develop my art more and more.”

My practice melds ancient techniques with signature innovations. I employ a mix of found objects with new, vintage, and created fibres. I create from memory and music. Memory provides inspiration; music purifies it. In music I see color and technique unfurl. I am creating my imagination and inviting you on the journey.”

“In many ways, my work reflects the strong influence of earth tones, vivid colors, and textures. One may experience a feeling of happiness, curiosity, spirituality, as well as passion. I consider myself a nonobjective, emotional, and intuitive painter who is constantly exploring various media and color combinations to provoke a more profound response in the viewer. If I succeed, my mission is complete.”

Ocean Of Emotion Oil on canvas 36 x 48 in.

“The intensely personal introspective journey of life, from the everchanging complexities of love, loss, birth, and death have inspired and encouraged me to become a professional artist. Most of my work focuses on the abstract art, but I also enjoy impressionism and mixed media. I experiment with various styles and techniques to create something that mixed spiritual and physical on canvas.”
