A NOTE FROM BLAKE WE KICK OFF 2026 WITH TWO HEARTFELT PLAYS. The first is a new take on a beloved classic, while the second will be a lovely surprise.

In Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre, Lauren Gunderson’s vibrant new stage adaptation of Little Women breathes fresh life into Louisa May Alcott’s cherished story. It honors the original text while exploring the creative spirit behind it. At the center of Gunderson’s version are the familiar, beloved sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy along with their mother Marmee and next-door friend Laurie. Their world — rich with sibling love, frustration, hope, and loss — remains fully intact. What distinguishes this version is Gunderson’s decision to place Louisa May Alcott on stage, transforming the story into a dual narrative: the tale of the March sisters themselves, and the work of their creator struggling to give them life. This Little Women is a tribute to storytelling itself.

In the Rosenthal Shelterhouse, I’m thrilled to direct one of my favorite chamber plays — Stephen Massicotte’s Mary’s Wedding — a poetic romance that blurs the boundaries between history, memory, and dreams.

The play is a love story — but not a conventional one. It follows Mary Chalmers, an English immigrant living in rural Canada, and Charlie Edwards, an earnest young man whose love for her is as pure as it is transformative. Their courtship, filled with the innocence and awkwardness of first love, unfolds against the looming backdrop of the First World War. The play moves fluidly between the prairie and the battlefield — capturing both the sweetness of young romance and the harsh realities of war. Ultimately, Mary’s Wedding is a meditation on love’s endurance and the bittersweet process of letting go.

LOUISA MAY Born November 29, 1832, in Germantown, PA, to Amos Bronson and Abigail May Alcott, Louisa May Alcott was the second of the four Alcott daughters. She spent the majority of her life between Boston and Concord Massachusetts.

Her father, a visionary educator, ran Temple School in Boston and educated his daughters, and others, in progressive ways for the time.

His friends and Louisa’s teachers were notable writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, and Henry David Thoreau.

Because of Mr. Alcott’s desire to innovate, he often found himself with impractical or unreliable sources of income. For example, he founded the failed Fruitlands — a utopian community — losing a large portion of the family’s money with it. Louisa felt responsible for caring for the family in ways she thought her father incapable. At 15 she wrote: “I will do something by and by. Don’t care what, teach, sew, act, write, anything to help the family; and I’ll be rich, famous, and happy before I die, see if I won’t!”

And she did — she worked several jobs as a teacher, a governess, a seamstress, and a domestic for many years before she found writing.

Alcott’s early stories were penned under pseudonyms including A.M. Barnard, an intentionally genderless offering which would lead readers and publishers alike to believe that she was a man. Those stories were often lewd and violent but lucrative for the young writer. Her first book of short stories, Flower Fables, was published under her own name in 1854.

In 1861, Alcott desired to join the war effort.

The Alcotts were staunch abolitionists. Louisa later recounted that one of her early childhood

memories was of a ‘Contraband’ slave, hiding in their home on their way to Canada. If she’d had her way, she’d have enlisted and fought for The Union. Instead, she sewed uniforms until she was old enough to join the Army Nurse Corps. In 1862, she joined famed nurse Dorothea Dix’s U.S. Sanitary Commission and worked in the Union Hotel Hospital in Georgetown. Alcott’s duties included cleaning wounds, feeding men, assisting with amputations, and organizing patient wards. She’d intended to serve for three months in the post but six weeks in, she contracted typhoid and was sent home. Upon her return, she wrote and published the novel Hospital Sketches based on her time with the Union Army and the letters she’d sent home to her family.

Of Hospital Sketches Louisa wrote “the Sketches never made much money, but showed me ‘my style,’ and taking the hint, I went where glory awaited me.” This style — loosely

LOUISA MAY ALCOTT’S LITTLE WOMEN autobiographical, full of stories and correspondence between the Alcott family — brought her glory indeed when in 1868 her publisher encouraged her to write a “girl’s story.” In three months, Alcott wrote 402 pages that resulted in Little Women, Part I. In 1869 Alcott was able to write in her journal: “Paid up all the debts… thank the Lord!” She followed Little Women’s success with two sequels, Little Men: Life at Plumfield with Jo’s Boys (1871) and Jo’s Boys and How They Turned Out (1886).

Louisa May Alcott spent the majority of the 1870s and 80s in Boston and Concord caring for her niece and namesake Lulu who had been left in her care after her sister’s death, and for her ailing parents. Her mother passed away in 1877. Eleven years later, Amos also died. Louisa lived just two days after her father’s passing. She never married or had children of her own.

AMOS Louisa’s father was born in November 1799 in Wolcott, Connecticut. The son of a flax farmer, he taught himself to read and eventually became an educator. As a leader in the Transcendentalist Movement, he brought music, art, nature, and physical education into the classroom — a novel idea for education at the time. From 1859-1864, Amos served as the Superintendent of Schools in Concord, Massachusetts. He also started a summer school for adult learners that lasted for nearly a decade until his death in 1888.

ABIGAIL MAY Louisa’s mother was born in October 1800 to a prominent New England family. Her great aunt, Dorothy Quincy, was married to John Hancock — the first governor of Massachusetts and noted signer of the Declaration of Independence. She devoted herself to her family and to social work — working to advance such causes as abolition, women’s rights, and temperance. One of her most famous quotes to her daughters, who she encouraged to pursue their talents and desires,

was, “Hope and keep busy.” She lived until November 1877.

ANNA Louisa’s sister Anna, the inspiration for Meg, was born in March 1831. Despite her being the most traditional member of the Alcott family — eventually becoming a devoted wife and mother — she was also quite devoted to theatre. She had secret longings “to shine before the world as a great actress or Prima Donna.” She and Louisa formed the Concord Dramatic Union in 1858. There she met John Bridge Pratt and the two fell in love while playing opposite of each other in The Loan of a Lover. John died in their 10th year of marriage, leaving her behind with two young sons. She lived out the rest of her days in the house she and Louisa purchased in 1877.

ELIZABETH Elizabeth, the inspiration for Beth March, was born in 1835, and like her literary counterpart, died after a complication from contracting scarlet fever. She was 22 years old. She loved kittens, playing the piano, and sewing. The descriptions of Beth in Little Women are said to be an accurate portrayal of the beloved member of the Alcott family.

ABBA MAY The youngest of the Alcott daughters, Abigail (Abba) was born in 1840. Like Amy in Little Women, she was a talented visual artist. She began her art studies in Boston and after the success of Louisa’s novel, she was sent to study in London, Paris, and Rome. In 1878, after several successful art exhibitions, she met and married a Swiss businessman, Ernest Nieriker.

The couple lived in a suburb of Paris, Meudon, and had one daughter named after Louisa, who they called Lulu. Just seven weeks after Lulu’s birth, Abba died, and Lulu was raised by Louisa in Concord.

She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ ATCA New Play Award for I and You and The Book of Will, the William Inge Distinguished Achievement in Theater Award, the Lanford Wilson Award, and the Otis Guernsey New Voices Award. She studied Southern Literature and Drama at Emory University, and Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School where she was a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship. CONCESSIONS Al’s Bar serves drinks in two locations – one bar on the main level in the Schueler Lobby and one bar on the upper floor. Casual dining fare and snacks from The Delish Dish are available for purchase on the upper floor. Drinks are allowed in the theatres, however food is not.

FACILITY ACCESSIBILITY Patrons who are mobility-impaired may be dropped off outside the Playhouse’s main entrance. The walk from the top level of the parking garage to the entrance into the Schueler Lobby to the main level of the Rouse Theatre can be made without having to take any stairs. An elevator is available for access to the balcony level and first rows of the Rouse Theatre and the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. PARKING The Park Board reminds you that Eden Park officially closes at 10 p.m. As a grace period to the Playhouse, the police will not ticket vehicles until one half hour following the end of a performance. MARY’S WEDDING THE FINAL CHARGE OF THE CANADIAN CAVALRY

Shells were falling, machine guns were firing, and horses were whinnying as the final cavalry charge of the Great War on the Western Front took place at Moreuil Wood. The line had broken, and Field Marshal Douglas Haig called for the Canadian Cavalry Brigade — specifically the Lord Strathcona’s Horse — to charge through the gap in the line to advance further into German-controlled territory. This ill-fated charge would be the last wartime charge for the Canadians in military history.

March 30, 1918, was the mid-point of the 100 Days Campaign — a campaign which saw incredible advances through German-controlled lines on the Western Front and the

beginning of the final phase of the First World War. At Moreuil Wood, the infantry and artillery attacks had, in the opinion of the generals commanding the attack, broken the German defensive line, and for the first time since 1914, the Canadian Cavalry Brigade would remount and attack.

Between January 1915 and early 1918, cavalry soldiers — referred to as “troopers”— took on the role of infantry personnel. They worked in the same trenches as all the other soldiers and were required to defend and attack using the same tactics as the infantry. For all intents and purposes, they were infantry troops, however, they also had to pack their kits according to

They were therefore always required to carry their tack, feed and water for their mounts, rations and water for themselves, ammunition, etc. Yet, they were not given the same packs as infantry troops. They were able to hold some of these supplies in their saddlebags, but they had to transport heavy equipment without a proper way of storing it.

Despite the negligible use of cavalry on the Western Front after the first months of the Great War, the cavalry remained at the forefront of the minds of those planning Allied offensives. In Great Britain, the General Planning Staff was largely composed of cavalry officers, and Douglas Haig was one of them.

Cavalry was therefore considered vital to winning the war against the German Empire.

Rarely used in battle as actual cavalry troopers, this final charge proved, once and for all, that in modern warfare, the cavalry was of little strategic value.

On that fateful day, Lieutenant Gordon Muriel Flowerdew led the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Company C cavalry group on two charges against a myriad of German defensive positions.

Three hundred German infantrymen defended their position. Using the feared MG-08 heavy machine gun and the newly invented light machine gun, they mowed down the advancing cavalry within minutes. Nevertheless, the only surviving trooper remembers Lieutenant Flowerdew shouting “It’s a charge, boys! It’s a charge!” Racing at a full gallop, the squadron met the German Army, but ultimately failed in its attempt to take the position.

This earned Flowerdew the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in the British Commonwealth. However, Flowerdew’s story did not end happily since his squadron lost all but one trooper in the attack.

of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse. The battlefield there is strewn with the remains of the attacking Canadian horses, their men, and the German soldiers who defended their line. This was the last charge of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade.

After the Second World War, the Canadian Cavalry Brigade was largely reorganized into armoured, tank and motorized corps. All but a small number of troopers were assigned ceremonial roles in the Royal Canadian Army.

Unfortunately, no wartime photographers were able to capture the final charge of Company C, led by Lieutenant Flowerdew, but the famous British painter, Sir Alfred Munnings, captured the moment and immortalized it in an oil painting completed in the 1920s.

STEPHEN MASSICOTTE – PLAYWRIGHT Stephen’s most recent play, Stars on Her Shoulders, premiered at Workshop West Playwrights Theatre in Edmonton in the fall of 2024. Mary’s Wedding premiered in 2002 at the Alberta Theatre Projects’ playRites Festival and won the 2000 Alberta Playwriting Competition, 2002 Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play, and 2003 Alberta Book Award for Drama. It has since had close to 200 productions around the world, at such theaters as American Players Theatre, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, Delaware Theatre Center, City Theatre in Pittsburgh, Portland Center Stage, the National Arts Centre of Canada, and many others. His play The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion premiered as a co-production between the Tarragon Theatre and the Great Canadian Theatre Company and was a hit off Broadway. His play The Clockmaker premiered at the Alberta Theatre Projects’ 2009 playRites Festival and won the 2009 Betty Mitchell Award for Best New Play and the 2011 inaugural Toronto Theatre Critics Award for Best English Language Play. Stephen wrote the feature films The Dark, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, and How We Ended Us, the award-winning short June, and Historica Canada’s Winnipeg Falcons and Nursing Sisters Heritage Minutes.
