It usually takes three weeks for the appliance to be made. “It’s an FDA-approved, custommade, adjustable acrylic appliance,” Dr. Kitzmiller said. When your appliance arrives, they will instruct you on putting it in, adjusting it to fit, and caring for it. You’ll come back for a follow-up visit in about four weeks. “We’ll ask you some subjective questions such as are you sleeping better, if your partner has noticed a reduction in snoring and if you’re less tired during the day. Then we send you home with a portable sleep monitor to provide us with objective data to make sure the treatment is being effective,” said Dr. Kitzmiller. “I have been thrilled with the results from using my oral appliance. If you think you’re one of the 22 million Americans with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or struggle using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask when you sleep, it’s time to consider the oral appliance alternative available from Timothy J. Kitzmiller, DDS. It’s an easy and effective solution. “Many of our patients are already using a CPAP machine and come to us for an alternative,” said Lori Kitzmiller, Dr. Kitzmiller’s wife and the treatment coordinator at Cincinnati Dental Sleep Medicine, their associated practice dedicated to helping people with snoring and OSA. “Our oral appliance is a medical device that fits over your teeth and holds the lower jaw forward while you sleep, keeping the airway open.” If you have not already been diagnosed with OSA, your complimentary first visit will start with a series of questions to help identify your symptoms. “We use a number of screening tools to determine the likelihood that our patients may have sleep disordered breathing,” said Dr. Kitzmiller. Depending on your answers, you may be referred for an advanced screening or to a sleep lab for overnight testing, which often can be done using a home monitor. “Once a diagnosis of OSA has been confirmed, we move into the active phase of treatment,” Dr. Kitzmiller said. During the active phase, Dr. Kitzmiller will do a comprehensive oral and airway exam to make sure the appliance will

Best’s ways to start an interior decorating plan

Spring is here, and that may be a signal to spruce up your home. If you’re not a professional interior decorator, you may not know where to start. Thanks to Best Furniture Gallery in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, help is just a visit away. “We’re here to listen to your needs, ask the right questions, recommend furniture and accessories, and help you put together a plan to transform any room in your home quickly and easily,” said Craig Reis, who co-owns Best Furniture with his wife, Carolynn. Here are some things to keep in mind as you develop your plan. » Define your space. Once you clearly outline the purpose of the space,

family movie night?’ ” said Carolynn. “When you define how the room will be used you can more quickly determine pieces that you may need to repurpose, purchase or replace.” » Focus on one room at a time. Transforming your whole house at once is normally not a practical approach and can quickly frustrate and overwhelm you. Also, you still have to live in your home while the process is under way, so you wouldn’t want to redo your master bedroom without a spare to use in its place. » Take inventory of what you have. When you’ve owned something for a long time, it’s easy to take it for granted, and that means overlooking just how beautiful (or ugly) it is. Spring is the perfect time of year to take a step back and objectively look at what can be repurposed, transformed, moved to a different room, given away or disposed of. » Get rid of what you hate. “We all have a tendency to hang on to things that have outlived their usefulness,” said Caro-

lynn. “But our possessions should serve us well and bring us joy. If they don’t, it’s time for them to make someone else happy.” » Measure the room. “This is one of the first questions we ask,” explained Carolynn. Taking good measurements includes doorways; windows; fireplace width; and the distance between the window and door to the ceiling, the wall or the next opening. “Also measure the pieces you intend to keep – length, width, height and depth.” Not only do you need to know what size furniture the room can accommodate, you need to know if new pieces can pass through doorways and staircases on the way in. Carolynn also recommends using painter’s tape on the floor to outline furniture measurements so a client gets a sense of the volume of space that the furniture will occupy. » Look in your closet to choose your color palette. Berkeley Square resident exactly where she wants to be at this time in her life

It didn’t take an appearance on HGTV for house hunter Junne Beckett to find her ideal living space. As Beckett rolls through the gates of Berkeley Square in her 2011 striped Chevy Camero, she envisions coming home to her custom-designed apartment, where she selected everything from the carpet to the paint to the wallpaper. Each finishing touch reflects her personality, such as the custom-painted sparkling ceiling that mimics diamonds, with hand-applied rhinestones added. “It is important to me to have certain things, like spacious living areas and updated amenities,” Beckett said. “I also wanted to be able to just walk down the hall and meet my friends for

lunch.” When her husband passed away in 2007, she said she fantasized about the inclusiveness, security and luxury of living in a hotel. It wasn’t much of a stretch to find all the amenities she needed at Berkeley Square, where she was able to create her own unique space, tailor activities to her own schedule and interests, and even bring along her Siamese cat, Charles Darling, who has grown accustomed to stretching out in front of Beckett’s double-glass doors that lead to her walk-out patio. Shelly Henderson, senior director of Sales Strategy for Colonial Communities of Berkeley Square & Westover and the residents’ guide through the move-in process, said she fondly

recalls her time working with Beckett as they detailed her new place. When people come to live at Berkeley Square, she said, they bring with them more than just their household possessions. Each person, with their lifetime of experiences, talents and memories, adds something special to the Berkeley Square community. Beckett, she said, is recognized for her style, as well as her philanthropy. In memory of her husband’s lifelong dedication to advancing education as a high school teacher, principal and superintendent of Fairfield City Schools, Beckett has made numerous contributions to organizations throughout the community. She has funded a full kitchen at the Colonial Schools Kindergarten as well as

a smartboard and TAPit, giving children the chance to learn creatively. Beckett, who originally was from Oxford, Ohio, but spent 25 years in Florida, said Berkeley Square’s retirement-living amenities far surpass what the Sunshine State has to offer. “There is more togetherness here,” she said. “Everyone is really, really friendly. You just walk outside and there is always someone there to say hello. I just like everything about it. This is exactly where I want to be at this time in my life.” For more information about the Colonial Communities of Berkeley Square & Westover and upcoming open houses, call 513896-8080. LipoLaser Cincinnati, located at 618 Buttermilk Pike in Crescent Springs, offers Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky residents a nonsurgical and painless alternative to traditional liposuction. The latest in safe LipoLaser is here! LipoLaser Cincinnati can focus on areas of the body that tend to be difficult to target with regular diet and exercise. In a hurry? You can get better results in a month than you can get from six months in the gym. You can lose inches of pure body fat in just weeks – with no surgery, no pain, no shots, no pills, no starving or strict dieting, no strenuous exercise and no downtime at all. Something unique about LipoLaser Cincinnati is that they offer two of the most sought-after LipoLaser treatments available under one roof. Lapex focuses on spotreducing a small and specific 4- to 6-inch area (such as saddle bags). Lapex helps to shrink small bulges. The Zerona targets larger body areas on both the

front and back side of the body. The Zerona is used if you want to lose “dress sizes.” Zerona keeps your same body shape, but makes your body overall smaller. The Zerona was featured on the Dr. Oz Show; he called it the “Miracle procedure to fight fat without undergoing the knife.” The Zerona is considered the “Holy Grail” of cosmetic procedures. “I’ve always had a problem with my hips, waist and thighs. No matter how much exercise or dieting I did, nothing worked for me. I was shocked and thrilled beyond words when I lost 8 inches in just 4 weeks with the Zerona at LipoLaser Cincinnati! hile most parents are up to date when it comes to using new technology, the latest in baby monitoring technology is a new arrival. D-Link recently introduced the Wi-Fi Baby Camera (DCS-825L), a complete baby monitoring solution that works with iPhone or Android devices to provide a clear view of your little one from the palm of your hand. Following are five ways the camera helps new moms and dads keep an eye on the little one: 1. See more than two cameras from multiple devices: While most baby monitors on the market today allow parents to keep track of one camera (sometimes two) from a monitor, the mydlink Baby Mobile app keeps tabs on up to 99 camera feeds from the same monitoring device and is also accessible from a smartphone or tablet. 2. Check in on your little one from

anywhere, anytime: Today’s on-the-go parents now have the flexibility to check in while away with an instant view of what’s happening at home from any 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connection via mydlink’s Baby Mobile app. 3. Get a clear view with HD resolution: Offering 720p resolution, the camera provides a clear and sharp HD picture and automatically transitions to night vision mode when the room gets dark. 4. Monitor the nursery’s temperature from your smartphone: Receive instant alerts when the baby’s room gets too hot or cold, making it simple to keep the nursery at the ideal temperature. 5. Soothe your baby with lullabies: device comes preprogrammed with five classic lullabies to soothe your little one off to sleep.

Home improvements that make Breakfast your home more valuable Continued from Page 2

ore and more homeowners are embarking upon home improvement projects, spending nearly $200 billion a year on home renovations, according to the National Association of Home Builders. If you’re looking to make some home improvements without breaking the bank, spend smartly and invest time and money now into the projects that will pay back later. When it comes to first impressions, house hunters first notice curb appeal, or lack thereof. In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, curb appeal is important to 71 percent of homebuyers. So beautify the outdoor space to attract possible buyers by focusing on small exterior improvements that will pay off big, like planting seasonal shrubs, painting the front door, refreshing a rusty mailbox or replacing old porch lighting with updated fixtures. These minor details

will make a major and lasting statement. At the very least, you should clean the yard of any debris, trim trees and spread mulch in planting beds. You can also increase the value of your home by giving your siding material an overhaul. Remodeling Magazine suggests replacing aluminum and vinyl siding with a durable fiber-cement mixture, which will recoup about 88 percent of its cost upon resale. It resists fire, rotting, moisture and termites – all potential hazards that could otherwise end up costing thousands. “Let your insurance agent know whenever you complete a renovation project to make sure any new upgrades to your home are properly covered under your existing policy,” says Erie Insurance Vice President and Product Manager Joe Vahey. “In addition, some home improvement upgrades may entitle you to discounts, especially if renovations make the home safer or more se-

cure.” Most people seem to think that a huge kitchen overhaul is necessary to snag interested buyers. However, Remodeling Magazine reports that you’ll actually recoup 8.5 percent more of the costs of a minor kitchen renovation compared to a major kitchen renovation. So instead of redoing the kitchen completely, accomplish a few minor DIY kitchen updates like changing out faucets and lighting fixtures, painting cabinets, adding new hardware to drawers and cabinets, and replacing old appliances with newer (and often more energyefficient) models. Experts also say that adding an attic bedroom and finishing the basement are two of the largest renovations that give you the best return on your investment, allowing you to recoup more than 84 percent and nearly 78 percent of the cost, respectively.

Let Total Dentistry improve your smile and your life

If missing teeth or loose dentures are making you miserable and robbing you of self-confidence and care-free living, visit Total Dentistry. “Until recently, the solutions for those with missing teeth were pretty undesirable,” said Chris Omeltschenko, DDS (or Dr. O to his patients.) “Bridges require natural teeth to be ground down, partials are bulky and made of metal, and dental implants, while a much better option for replacing a missing tooth, are extremely costly.” To help his patients overcome these concerns in a more cost-effective manner, Dr. O researched and trained on a procedure called mini dental implants, or MDIs. MDIs are just that: a smaller

version of a traditional implant. And while they may be small, they can produce big results for you. “The benefits of MDIs over traditional implants are numerous,” explained Dr. O. » Smaller size. Their smaller size allows them to be placed in areas with less bone, so expensive and uncomfortable bone grafts are often not needed. » Less invasive. Because of their small size an incision is not necessary to place them, leading to a much easier recovery for patients. With mini dental implants, patients are able to comfortably complete treatment with a local anesthetic and return to normal activities immedi-

ately following the procedure. “Healing is quick and the procedure can almost always be completed in one short visit – meaning the crown can be placed on the implant immediately,” said Dr. O. » Less expensive. Mini dental implants can cost up to one-third or one-half the price of traditional implants. “For example, when replacing a missing tooth with a mini dental implant, you’ll need an implant and an implant crown. In this area, the average fee for a traditional implant ranges from $1,500 to $2,000, plus $1,000 for the implant crown. A mini dental implant averages about $500, plus $1,000 for the implant crown,” said Dr. O. » Flexibility. MDIs

can be used to take the place of a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth, and several implants can be strategically placed throughout the mouth so dentures can be “snapped” into place. » Easy care. Unlike maintaining a partial (which has to be cleaned with special cleaners) or cleaning around a bridge (which creates a natural trap for food particles), mini dental implants are cleaned just like natural teeth. “It’s important to brush and floss around the implant just as you would any other tooth,” advised Dr. O. One thing his patients always ask about MDIs is how they look. Mini dental implants are designed to look and function just like natural teeth, which is another benefit. “Partials tend to be noticeable because of the metal clasps used to secure them in the mouth. Bridges sometimes don’t blend well with the surrounding

teeth and might even have metal that shows through,” said Dr. O. Perhaps the best endorsement for mini dental implants comes from Dr. O’s actual customers: “I recently had a tooth implant done and thought the whole process was easy. Single-visit procedure eliminated multiple visits. No pain or other side effects,” one patient said. So don’t let missing teeth or loose dentures affect your life.
