Editor’s note Greetings from your new Creative Living editor. My name is Jo Kovach and I am delighted to bring Creative Living into your home every month. All of us recently observed the end of daylight saving time. What a precious gift it is to gain an hour. During the holidays we all wish for more time to decorate our homes, shop, entertain friends and, most importantly, lavish special attention on our loved ones. Read on. In this issue of Creative Living, our advertisers offer ideas to help you get a head start on the holiday season, save money and capture some extra time to spend with family and friends. As we usher in the holiday season, I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.

Plan ahead and take the worries out of the holidays The start of the holiday season is less than a month away. Rather than wondering where the time went — and how you’re going to plan all the parties, cook all the food, run all the errands and shop for all the gifts — you can use this time to plan and organize for a stress-free holiday season. Planning for the holidays really breaks down into three distinct areas: decorating, entertaining and shopping. Decorating » Take inventory. If you’re like most people,

you keep your holiday decorations here and there and some more stashed in the attic. Take a Sunday afternoon to go through all you have and take stock. Decide what to keep, what to donate and what to throw in the Dumpster. Be unmerciful – if it’s broken, out of style or you haven’t used it in years, out it goes. » Replenish. Now that you’ve gone through your decorations, replace those key pieces. Don’t forget Black Friday – many stores offer great early discounts on holiday decorations.

» Store it away. Pick up some specialty containers so you can put everything away neatly. Create a written list of everything contained in each box and seal it in so you won’t have to do this again next year. Entertaining » Keep it simple. Your guests want to spend time with you and each other, not dine on the latest cuisine. Stick with tried-and-true recipes for your holiday get-togethers and you’ll reduce the stress of prepping and

Foot and Ankle Care, the podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating diabetes-related foot problems. Dr. Patel, her colleagues and staff perform testing for peripheral arterial disease (PAD), provide routine preventative foot care, wound care, and participate in Medicare shoes program for patients with diabetes. “Caring for the diabetic foot is very similar to many other medical conditions,” said Dr. Patel. “Taking care of your feet and seeing your doctor regularly can prevent problems. When a foot ailment goes unattended, it can spiral and cause real problems.” The physicians at CFAC recommend these essential steps to keep diabetic feet healthy and pain-free: § Inspect your feet daily. Use a mirror to check the bottom of your feet or ask someone to look at your feet. Seek medical attention for changes in skin color, swelling, pain or numb-

Diabetics need to take special care of their feet People with diabetes are much more likely to develop foot conditions that can put their health at serious risk. It’s important that individuals with diabetes take good care of their feet. Dipika Patel, D.P.M., is one of 14 physicians with the Centers for Foot and Ankle Care (CFAC) who are experts in diabetic foot care. “Many patients with diabetes don’t understand that relatively simple things, such as a blister or a cut on the foot can escalate into a much more serious situation,” said Dr. Patel. “Nerve damage can cause a loss of sensation and lead to undetected ulcers on the feet. Poor circulation hinders the foot’s ability to heal and fight infection,” she said. The American Diabetes Association recommends that all patients with diabetes receive an annual comprehensive foot examination to identify risk factors predictive of ulcers and amputations. Use warm water (not hot) and be sure to dry between toes. § Keep skin soft and smooth. Rub a thin coat of lotion over tops and bottoms of feet, but not between toes. § Always wear shoes and socks. Get in the habit of making lists for everything from household chores to planning a party. That way, you minimize your chances of forgetting something, which can lead to stress. » Plan ahead. Along with list-making goes having a plan. Many people start shopping for next Christmas the day after this Christmas – buying wrapping paper at clearance prices, picking

up holiday decorations and scoring great bargains on anything that didn’t make it onto their Christmas lists this year. Even if you’re not that ambitious, it’s never too early to start your holiday shopping list – when Joe longs for a power tool or Britney wishes for a cool new sweater, write it down. Chances are, they’ll forget they mentioned it and on Christmas morning, you’ll be the hero for knowing just what they wanted. » Bargain shop. The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year and you can pick up some tremendous bargains. Many websites and apps are available to provide previews of Black Friday deals. Face it, you can’t take all the stress out of the holidays (and really, don’t we like some of it?). But you can help reduce stress by taking a few minutes to prioritize, minimize and organize your life. Now where did I put that list… .

This Thanksgiving, start to make gratitude part of everyday life It’s that time of year again. Big holiday celebrations that focus on food and family, sometimes with a hefty dose of stress as a result of both. But when we really think over what the holiday is about, we remember that it is not just called Thanksgiving, it is about giving thanks. Being grateful sometimes gets lost in our holiday chaos, and that’s a shame because being grateful matters every day. In fact, there is a whole school of thought that says being grateful is an important part of our health and well-being. According to research, those who are grateful take more steps to keep themselves healthy. Their attitude also helps them to manage stress, which is a major factor in diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. In fact,

there have even been some studies that indicate optimistic people have stronger immune systems, helping them to fight off disease and stay well. But how do we cultivate gratitude? How do we make it a part of our everyday lives? Especially when life can sometimes hand us those “lemons,” rather than a glass of lemonade? One practice to try is to incorporate a gratitude exercise into your daily life. With a spouse or family member, you can take a moment to acknowledge what you are grateful for each day. It can even become a “dinner table” practice, a sharing between family members. It’s something everyone can do, from the youngest to the oldest, and it can help us remember the good about one another, and lessen the inevita-

ble tensions of everyday life. Writing it down can also be an effective strategy. Just a few words or phrases on a slip of paper, a computer or even your phone, can help you to re-focus and re-orient yourself to those things that are most important to you. You can share those writings or keep them to yourself. Either way it can work. And while you are writing, and have a few minutes, trying making a gratitude list. You may be surprised at just how many items are on that list! You might even try this at the Thanksgiving table, before you dig into the traditional turkey and fixings: Ask each person to just say one thing that they are grateful for. It doesn’t have to be long or detailed or even profound. Just an attitude of gratitude.

In fact, there is a whole school of thought that says being grateful is an important part of our health and wellbeing. According to research, those who are grateful take more steps to keep themselves healthy. Their attitude also helps them to manage stress, which is a major factor in diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. In fact, there 10

have even been some studies that indicate optimistic people have stronger immune systems, helping them to fight off disease and stay well. It’s something everyone can do, from the youngest to the oldest, and it can help us remember the good about one another, and lessen the inevitable tensions of

everyday life.
