Enjoying seasonal fruits is one of summer’s most delicious pleasures. With a few whole fruits, ice and a blender, a perfect summer concoction is seconds away.

Editor’s note One year, the evening before Father’s Day my kid sister spilled the beans at the dinner table. “You’re going to love the new shoes we got for you, Daddy!” she blurted out. Sudden silence. Mom’s eyes flashed daggers. My other sister and I exchanged the uh-oh glance. Dad did what all cool dads would do – he pretended not to hear. Sunday, June 16 is Father’s Day. When your appliance arrives, they will instruct you on putting it in, adjusting it to fit, and caring for it. If you think you’re one of the 22 million Americans with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) or struggle using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mask when you sleep, it’s time to consider the oral appliance alternative available from Timothy J. Kitzmiller, DDS. It’s an easy and effective solution. “Many of our patients are already using a CPAP machine and come to us for an alternative,” said Lori Kitzmiller, Dr. Kitzmiller’s wife and the treatment coordinator at Cincinnati Dental Sleep Medicine, their associated practice dedicated to helping people with snoring and OSA. “Our oral appliance is a medical device that fits over your teeth and holds the lower jaw forward while you sleep, keeping the airway open.” If you have not already been diagnosed with OSA, your complimentary first visit will start with a series of questions to help identify your symptoms. “We use a number of diagnostic tests, including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale screening, which measures your degree of sleepiness, and the Berlin Questionnaire, which measures such things as the amount of noise you make while sleeping,” said Kitzmiller. Depending on your answers, you may be referred for an advanced screening or to a sleep lab for overnight testing. “Once a diagnosis of OSA has been confirmed, we move into the active phase of treatment,” said Kitzmiller. 25 minutes: The time it takes to teach your children about safety

Talk to your children about safety. It could save a child’s life. NAPS PHOTO

Did you know there are 525,000 minutes in a year? The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children wants you to take 25 of them to talk to your child about safety – the same amount of time it takes to watch a favorite TV show. It could save a child’s life. In the seven years since it began, NCMEC’s “Take 25” campaign has spread to thousands of communities across the United States, 150 countries and the Internet through social media. The campaign was created to coincide with National Missing Children’s Day, which is May 25. That was the day, in 1979, when 6-year-old Etan Patz was abducted from a New York street on his way to school, the first time he was allowed to walk to the bus stop alone. A suspect was recently charged with kidnapping and murdering him – more than three decades later. At the time Etan vanished, there was no coordinated national system for addressing missing children cases. His case, and that of 6-year-old Kentucky

Adam Walsh, who was abducted from a Florida mall and murdered in 1981, helped launch a national movement that led to the Missing Children’s Act in 1982 and the creation of NCMEC in 1984. Today, up to 2,000 children go missing every day. Most are recovered quickly, but there are many who never return home. As the nation’s leading nonprofit working with law enforcement, families and the professionals who serve them on issues of missing and exploited children, NCMEC has learned a lot about how to keep children safer in the real world and on the Internet. Since 2005 to January 2013, for example, NCMEC employees have analyzed 8,000 confirmed attempted abductions, showing that many children escaped harm by taking some kind of action. Most suspects were driving a vehicle. Nearly a third targeted children going to and from school or school-related activities between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Nearly half of the children escaped by

May 30, 2013

walking or running away without any contact. Onethird were proactive: yelling, kicking, screaming or pulling away. This month, NCMEC is honoring a 10-year-old Philadelphia girl who fought off a man who tried to abduct her last July as she walked down a street near her home, holding her 2-year-old brother’s hand. A surveillance videotape showed how fast it can happen: The man grabbed her from behind, put his hand on her mouth and lifted her in the air. She struggled mightily and her little brother screamed as loud as he could. The man dropped her and ran. He was later arrested. As part of the Take 25 campaign, NCMEC provides families and communities with free tools and resources, in multiple languages, to host events and initiate an ongoing dialogue with children, including conversation starters and important safety tips. Because of its popularity, NCMEC has expanded the May campaign from April 1 to June 15. Events to raise awareness about the importance of talking to children about safety are held in a variety of venues, including community centers, military installations, sport complexes, retail locations, houses of worship, schools and libraries. Last year alone, Masonichip International hosted 269 “Take 25” events. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 206. Miss Black USA, 36.

Every year, organizers find creative new ways to spread the message – on highway billboard signs, at community safety fairs, even a flash mob. NCMEC’s free resources, including the “Take 25 Organizer’s Kit,” can be downloaded at www.take25.org or or-

dered after your Take 25 event is registered and approved by NCMEC staff. You can also find important safety information at NCMEC’s websites, missingkids.com and netsmartz.org.

Living life to the fullest: A road to recovery Beverly Jennings leads a very full life. She has five grown children and 12 grandchildren, and is an avid volunteer. After a knee injury that limited her mobility, she looked for a recovery plan that would get her moving again so she could enjoy her retirement with Joe, her husband of 50 years. After undergoing a full-knee replacement, Beverly came to stay at Providence Pavilion for rehabilitation. Like many orthopedic patients, she’d originally expected to return directly home from the hospital, but a negative reaction to anesthesia and pain medication during surgery hindered her recovery. At a point, she was well

enough to leave the hospital, but not well enough to go home. From the hospital she chose to come to Providence Pavilion. The rehabilitation and nursing center is located in the former St. Elizabeth North Hospital in Covington, Ky. “I was worried,” Beverly says. “I was in bed for six full days. I knew that being in bed for so long wouldn’t help my recovery. I felt like I was never going to walk the same, never going to be OK. But I was met at the door when I arrived and everyone I met was so encouraging. Everyone I met had a story about someone who had overcome an obstacle.” At Providence, Bever-

her through it all. Beverly worked with Occupational Therapy to ensure she would be safe and independent enough to return home, completing everyday tasks like cooking, getting dressed, climbing stairs, and getting into and out of the car. She left Providence Pavilion using a walker, but a cane came very quickly. And soon she wasn’t even using that. (Though she sometimes relies on her husband’s arm!) Her orthopedic surgeon said she recovered quicker than most patients. “There are little things that bother you, but it definitely doesn’t hurt like it did before, and that’s because I got off to a good start,” Beverly says. “If I had not had that good start at Providence Pavilion, I don’t know where I’d be.” Now that she is able to move comfortably with her new knee, Beverly looks forward to resuming an active retirement. She is excited that she could celebrate her oldest granddaughter’s college graduation and host her grandson’s First Communion party. “I succeeded because I had help. I couldn’t do it by myself. I didn’t know what to do. That’s why I came to Providence Pavilion,” Beverly says. “I’m very grateful to my husband, to my family, to Providence Pavilion, and to God.” m

Get grilling

Many people associate summer gatherings with grilling, but that doesn’t mean your menu options need to be limited to the typical hamburgers and hot dogs found at most cookouts. Explore the hundreds of recipes for more health-conscious grilled cuisine, including salmon, shrimp, veggie burgers and chicken. For an appetizer, try grilling

slices of ciabatta or pita bread and topping with chopped tomatoes, basil and olive oil to create an easy bruschetta. Season and toss sliced, cooked potatoes on the grill to make your own steak fries, and use your blender to create a number of dipping sauces and homemade condiments. Roasting vegetable skewers makes for a light but flavorful side, and you can even use rosemary sprigs as the skewers for extra zest. Summer settings

Outdoor dinner parties

are typically less formal events, but some instances still call for place settings and arranged seating. To create a fun, light atmosphere that is still organized and thoughtful, use colorful place mats and napkins to offset a white or neutral tablecloth. There’s no need to break out the fine china, either. Opt for bamboo or melamine plates and bowls instead, which are available in a wide array of colors and designs. Bamboo serving utensils can create a beach-like feel, and reusable, recyclable plastic

silverware is an affordable alternative to disposable cutlery. Have fun with table decorations and fill glass bowls and vases with flowers, colorful stones and floating candles for an attractive, summery table setting. Add pretty citronella candles for decoration that will also keep your table bug-free. Night lights

Solar lamps are a smart, energy-efficient way to light the walking and seating areas, while Chinese lanterns hanging in the trees create a fun, party feel. Garden lights lining the driveway and walkways will direct attendees to and from the gathering areas safely, and an enclosed bonfire pit or portable fireplace is a great way to gather people for post-dinner revelry. If you’re thinking of replacing your pool’s worn-out vinyl liner or getting it painted or plastered, you might want to consider fiberglass resurfacing instead. “Fiberglass is handsdown better than vinyl or gunite. Since it’s bonded to the surface, there are

no wrinkles, tears or holes to worry about, no fading, and no floating,” explained Sam Ionna, owner of S.I. Putting off desperately needed dental work can literally blow up in your face. Attending weddings, summer parties, or maybe even taking your longawaited vacation with a swollen face can be avoided. If you have put off your dental care due to huge fears, it can cost you time and money, not to mention the stress associated with pain and swelling. It is a proven fact that the earlier you detect dental problems, the less time and money it will cost you. Even if you think your mouth is in bad shape now, next year it will even be worse. The good news is that Dr. Tara Dallmann and her team specialize in helping those who are in these situations. Sedation is only a small part of the TLC you will receive at Gentle Dental Care. Most importantly, you will receive no judgment or lectures. They realize that in most cases it has Kentucky

taken all the courage you have just to make the first call. After listening to your concerns, Dr. Dallmann and her compassionate team will create a plan to correct the years of neglect. However, you are in charge, which is the most amazing part. You let them know your dental budget and the time frame you want the work completed. They can spread out your treatment, or finish most of it in one visit while you snooze. To calm your anxiety they offer both oral and IV sedation. Gentle Dental Care’s treatment coordinator is amazing at fitting the treatment you need into a payment plan you can afford. Recently, a bride-to-be came to the office wanting a beautiful smile before her wedding just weeks away. As people show more skin with the summer season, it is important to get into a skincare routine that fits your lifestyle. Extended time in the sun can result in unwanted wrinkles, blemishes and sagging skin, not to mention more serious consequences – melanomas, scarring and skin cancer. Current estimates show that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Fortunately, it only requires simple steps alongside a protective mindset to prevent skin damage at every stage of life. To maintain a healthy

exterior this season, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Stanferd L. Kusch provides the following tips for strong, glowing skin at any age:

IF YOU’RE IN YOUR 20S

Though you may not be worrying about wrinkles yet, your skin may start to show warning signs of damage. Now is the time to focus on prevention. » Stay hydrated: Drinking water helps delay the appearance of wrinkles. » Quit smoking: Smoking strips your skin of elastin and collagen, leaving you at the risk of severely premature facial wrinkling.

Local roofer offers updated line of skylights At Rooftime, spring has sprung. The popular contractor has crews booked through May, while their estimators are busy preparing new quotes for people who have already requested a bid. MissMona, Rooftime’s office manager, offers these tips for homeowners considering a spring or summer roof project: “It’s time now to start collecting bids. Due to the many home shows that have gone on since January and windy, rainy weather, good roofers are already getting busy.” Rooftime is a great choice for homeowners seeking a trusted contractor to perform these improvements. Rooftime

has again earned the prestigious Angie’s List service award for 2012 (for the sixth consecutive year). Their “A” rating as members of the Better Business Bureau also lets homeowners know they can be trusted to install quality work. “Yes,” explained Shoemaker “we’re different than everybody else, in that we exclusively recommend and install only the Owens Corning line of products.” After researching all the products available nothing else came close in quality, warranties, selection and pricing. Homeowners know and trust the Owens Corning brand, Shoemaker said. Rooftime crews keep

up to date on the newest products, technology and codes through company-

paid seminars and annual Owens Corning certifications. Rooftime estimators do not work on commission, to ensure that the customer always receives an honest estimate that is not influenced by what a salesperson might earn. “We’re not the biggest roofer locally,” said Shoemaker. “You can find others that are cheaper, higher, older, etc., but you won’t find anyone that will provide the level of detail or work as hard for a homeowner as Rooftime.” Most roofing companies can only be reached 9 to 5 on weekdays. Rooftime understands that a storm can happen anytime. “If you need us

we’re here,” said Shoemaker. “We know if someone is calling it means they need help, so we forward our office lines to a cellphone after hours, to be available.” Rooftime provides free written estimates and will explain what they can do to fix a home’s issues. Services include new roofs, metal roofing, roof repairs, attic insulation, and seamless gutters. They also are box gutter experts and love working on older homes. New and exciting this year is the updated VELUX® line of skylight products. “We are excited about the new Solar Powered VELUX skylight,” Shoemaker said. “It has a huge Energy Star tax credit just for installing it, and it really changes any home for the better. Realtors highly recommend adding natural light to a home to upgrade its appeal, and once you have a skylight you will never want to live in a home without them ever again!” According to Rooftime, skylights now come in more than 16 shapes and sizes, can be added for as little as $500, and carry VELUX’s 10year No Leak warranty. Rooftime uses digital cameras, iPad video, satellite measurements and thermal camera scans to pinpoint problems. Their use of technology allows homeowners to see issues for themselves, and then provides “to-the-inch measurements for to-thepenny pricing.’ Visit them on the web at www.time2roof.com. » Eat smart: Foods that are high in vitamin C and antioxidants help prevent wrinkles by reflecting UV radiation from the sun.

IF YOU’RE IN YOUR 30S

This decade is the first time many see distinct signs of aging and skin damage, and it becomes necessary to build a more aggressive damage control and prevention regimen. » Assess the damage: Take advantage of free health screenings at your local pharmacies or retailers.

» Maintain reduced stress levels: Ask your pharmacist or clinician about the effects of cortisol and stress on your skin and weight. » Get acquainted with retinoids: Retinoid creams contain compounds found in vitamin A and are used to treat wrinkles, sun damage and acne. Retinoid creams are available in both prescription and over-thecounter treatments. » Make sunscreen a habit: Use (and reapply) sunscreen throughout the day whenever you go outside.

For people age 50 and older, it’s critical to be aware of changes in your skin that may reflect the status of its health. » Self check: Monitor changes in your skin and look out for persistent pink, scaly patches and red or black pearly spots or bumps – these can sometimes be indicators of skin cancer. » See a dermatologist: By age 50, every-

Tri-State Family Dentistry invests in latest technology to better serve its patients Tri-State Family Dentistry is known for providing personal care with the latest in technological advancements, and their latest upgrade is sure to combine the best of both. “We acquired a CEREC machine about a month ago,” said Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussler, DDS. CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Basically, it’s a system that allows the dentist to economically create custom-made crowns in a single appointment, using a highquality porcelain material that matches the natural color of the patient’s

surrounding teeth. CEREC uses CAD/ CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology similar to that found in the manufacturing and automotive industry, on a smaller scale. “We can reduce a process that used to take up to two visits over two to four weeks, down to a couple of hours in one afternoon,” explained Buller-Schussler. “This is a great option for people who don’t want to wait for their crown or don’t tolerate the gooey impression.” Buller-Schussler said. “It reduces the inconvenience of multiple

visits, and does away with the need to make impressions because it uses a 3-D color camera to take real-time photos of your teeth and gums. Then it uses these images to make the crown, all in about two hours.” You can even watch the manufacturing process. “We encourage people to watch us design and make their crowns because it’s a really cool process,” said BullerSchussler. The finished product is a crown that looks more like your natural teeth and also fits better than a crown made from a mold. “CEREC lets us design

the contact points before we do the final firing so that once we’re done, the crown usually fits perfectly,” she said. Visit Dr. Tiffany Buller-Schussler and Dr. Megan Weisenberger, DMD, at Tri-State Family Dentistry for your new crown and all your dental care needs.
