Get off to a GRAPE start in the new year If you’ve resolved to eat better this year, start by packing your plate with produce, including a dynamite little fruit – the Concord grape. Concord grapes are bold in taste and pack quite a nutritious punch. They can be enjoyed as 100

percent grape juice or in simple, healthy and flavor-packed recipes. Welch’s uses Concord grapes grown in North America exclusively by its family-farmer owners, who work tirelessly during harvest season to collect exceptional fruit

that meets their high quality standards. These Concord grapes are picked at their peak and pressed into juice within eight hours of harvesting to capture their perfectly ripe flavor. See GRAPE JUICE, Page 7

Snoring can be annoying, but it can also signal a more serious underlying health condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a breathing disorder in which breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted during sleep, and most often occurs when the airway muscles fail to keep the airway open while asleep. According to the World Health Organization, OSA affects one in four men and one in nine women. The most common treatment for OSA is wearing a device called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mask when sleeping. Dr. Timothy J. Kitzmiller, DDS understands OSA because he himself has it. It’s time to identify your tax deductions

You probably know tax deductions are an important part of your income tax return and that you want as many as possible. But do you understand how deductions actually save you money or how to determine which ones you can claim on your tax return? “Simply put, deductions lower the amount of your taxable income,” explains Jessi Dolmage, spokesperson for TaxACT, makers of popular tax-preparation software. “The more deductions you have, the less tax you pay.” Knowing which deductions you qualify for and whether you should itemize is easy with do-ityourself tax preparation products. Dolmage says: “The program eliminates the guess work. Answer simple questions about deductions and it will tell if you’re better off itemizing or taking the standard deduction. It also checks for errors and offers one-on-one tax help every step of the way.” You have the choice of claiming the standard deduction or itemizing deductions on your tax return, but you should choose

whichever amount is higher. Nearly two out of three taxpayers claim the standard deduction. Amounts are adjusted for inflation each year, vary by filing status, and are higher for those 65 and older or who are legally blind. For 2012 federal tax returns due April 15, 2013, standard deduction amounts are: » $5,950 for single, or married filing separately » $11,900 for married filing jointly, and qualifying widows(ers) » $8,700 for head of household If you itemize, your deductions are listed separately on your tax return. Itemized deductions are reported on Schedule A and can only be filed with long Form 1040. On the other hand, taxpayers claiming the standard deduction can file Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. Itemized deductions may include mortgage interest, state and local See TAXES, Page 11

The Gentle Dental Care team is searching for someone who needs a smile makeover but is unable to afford significant dental work. PROVIDED

Gentle Dental Care gives back Dr. Tara Dallmann and her Gentle Dental Care staff have been in Northern Kentucky for over 15 years and feel grateful to be a part of such an awesome community. Because Dr. Dallmann has a special place in her heart for people who just cannot get ahead, Gentle Dental Care continues to participate in the Donated Dental Services program. Gentle Dental has donated in excess of $100,000 over the years through this wonderful program but know that the wait through this agency can, at times, be more than two years. The entire staff has been touched in some way by the economic downturn and understands patients who are worried about paying for healthcare along with their other bills. Prior to leaving for Christmas break, Dr. Dallmann and her team brainstormed ways to contribute to the community and decided to conduct a Gentle Dental Care Gives Back search. Over the years, Dr. Dallmann has come across many people with heartbreaking circumKentucky

stances which prevented them from going to the dentist on a regular basis. Embarrassment and shame had kept them from living a normal life, until Dr. Dallmann and her team changed their lives by changing their smile. Through the years, these patients have gained confidence that they did not have prior to their smile transformation and, in turn, were able to get better jobs and/or promotions that before were not an option. Do you know someone who deserves a smile makeover? Someone that because of their circumstances has not been able to afford desperately needed dental work? It could be you or someone you know. Please write an essay (up to 300 words) explaining why you feel this person deserves/needs a makeover and attach a photo. Mail to Gentle Dental Care, 1984 Walton-Nicholson Pike, Independence, KY 41051. Or email to staff@sedationspadentist.com. The deadline is March 31, 2013. Thanks to the Concord grape, 100 percent grape juice can help support a healthy heart. According to Alton Brown, Food Network star, food historian and scientist, “Welch’s presses the entire Concord grape, skin, seed, pulp and all, and that releases hearthealthy plant nutrients called polyphenols.” Many of the polyphenols in Concord grapes are the same as those found in wine. In fact, you can even use 100 percent grape juice instead of sweet wine in a variety of recipes, which saves you from needing to buy another ingredient at the store. There are many ways to share the goodness of Concord grapes. 100 percent grape juice made with Concord grapes can be enjoyed in a glass as a nutritious beverage and can easily be incorporat-

Poached Pears in Grape Juice 1½ cups Welch’s 100% Grape Juice made with Concord grapes 2 cinnamon sticks 2 strips of orange rind 4 pears, peeled with stems remaining » In a medium saucepan, bring grape juice, cinnamon and orange rind to a boil. » Place pears standing in saucepan and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. » Turn or spoon juice over pears as they simmer. Remove pears and let cool. » Reduce sauce by boiling down to about 1⁄3 cup. » Spoon sauce over pears and keep chilled. » Serve pears by themselves or with light whipped cream.

Expert tips to help make family mealtimes simple

Mac and Cheese with Veggies is a family-friendly dish with added vegetables and beans for a tastier, more healthful version. NAPS PHOTO

How to help kids make smart food choices It’s more important than ever to help children understand about healthy food choices, well-balanced meals, portion control and the benefits of increased physical activity. For most busy families, however, it can be tough to find the time. Fortunately, the frozen and refrigerated food aisles of the grocery store can provide many healthful, balanced and nutritious options that can be prepared in minutes.

Mac and Cheese with Veggies 1 (12-oz) pkg. small pasta shell macaroni 1 egg 2 cups low-fat milk 2 Tbsp butter, melted 2½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 (10-oz) pkg. frozen mixed peas and carrots 1 cup red kidney beans (from can), drained and rinsed

CONSIDER COOL TIPS FOR COOL FOOD CHOICES FOR YOUR KIDS: » Make half the plate fruits and vegetables. » Make at least half of all the grains you choose whole grains. » Don’t forget the dairy. There are terrific cheeses. Have fat-free or 1 percent milk with your meal. » Vary protein choices among meat, poultry, fish and eggs. » For a treat, whip up a smoothie with yogurt and frozen fruits. » Add frozen veggies to your favorite dish or eat them as a side. » Get your family up and moving by planning fun activities for after dinner. » Try this great recipe to add vegetables and beans to a traditional dish to make it healthier and even tastier.

Bring large pot of water to a boil, add pasta and cook for 3 minutes. Add frozen peas and carrots mixture and cook for 5-7 minutes or until pasta is tender. Drain and set aside. In large bowl, whisk egg and milk together. Add melted butter and cheese and stir well. Toss in pasta and vegetables; then stir in beans. L I V I N G

Gathering together as a family for dinner can be a great idea, research shows. Just 20 minutes a night can positively affect children’s development and behavior. “Shared mealtimes can help reduce behavior problems, eating disorders and drug use in children and teens,” says Dr. Barbara Fiese, professor and director of the Family Resiliency Center at the University of Illinois. “But some families find it difficult to eat together on a daily basis,” she adds. To help, the Family Resiliency Center and the Pampered Chef, the largest direct seller of kitchen tools, developed the following tips to make mealtimes easier:

» Try something new. Picky eaters can be a struggle at the dinner table. It can take children up to 10 times to accept a new food, but parents often get frustrated and give up after less than three times. Parents can set the example by trying new foods themselves. » Institute a noscreen rule. Turn off phones, tablets, laptops and televisions when eating together. Work and home life balance can be a challenge when there are distractions at the table. » Work together. Kids as young as 3 can help with household tasks and dinner preparations. Using some simple tips such as a personal engagement party will ensure your engagement day is a truly unique, memorable experience for you and your future spouse. PHOTOSPIN.COM

How to make your proposal perfect You’ve picked the perfect ring. You’ve practiced the words you’ll use when you propose. But you know she would be livid if you asked her on the big screen at a sporting event. Making an engagement truly memorable will win you points for a lifetime each time she retells your engagement story. With so many engagements on Valentine’s Day, here are some great ways to make your engagement be one of a kind.

Take it personally

You are proposing to the woman or man of your dreams. The one person you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with. The person who is the perfectly unique match to yourself. So make the proposal just as personalized and special as that person. Yes, you Kentucky

may have chosen the perfect ring, but presentation is equally important. Choose something that will not only stun your betrothed, but also be something he or she can keep for years. Ditch the typical velvet box and go for a personalized, engraved keepsake box. With dozens of box options, you can perfectly match the style of your new fiance, from classic and elegant to contemporary chic. Then, take it one step further and engrave something meaningful to commemorate this day. Your names, the date you were engaged or a personal love saying (that maybe only the two of you understand) are ideal inscriptions.

ilies will remember forever. Whether you choose a private, intimate locale to pop the question or a bustling public setting, convene family and friends during or afterward to celebrate together. Plan a special party to commemorate this momentous, life-changing occasion. Don’t forget, a great party doesn’t necessarily mean great expense. Gathering at home with champagne, maybe a cheese plate and a homemade music playlist can make for one of the most memorable occasions of your life. Just be sure your future spouse is the center of attention, and you’ll be set to make the event unforgettable.

Make it a party

But being able to actually look back at this moment will be something you’ll treasure for years to come. If you plan on hiring a professional photographer, make sure to call at least a few weeks in advance. Luckily, unlike your wedding day, you’ll probably only need the photographer for an hour or so. If you’re already on a shoestring budget, see if a photography enthusiast friend will take photos for you. The roof. Should it stay or should it go? Many homeowners are dismayed to find their roof has failed in the heart of winter. This leaves them trying to decide to replace the roof now or try to wait until spring.

COULD YOU?

Roof replacements during cold weather are possible if done by skilled professionals. Shingle makers such as Owens Corning have detailed requirements concerning the temperatures at which their materials can be installed (28 degrees and dry). While it may be possible to install roofs in temperatures lower than 28 degrees, many extra precautions are needed. When installing shingles, roofers need to be careful not to damage the upper portion, called the headlap, when hammering. Owens Corning does not change the warranty based strictly on installation temperature. This means that your new dimensional shingle has the exact same warranty as any roof installed in warmer temperatures. New shingles need to undergo thermal sealing, which can take several days of sunshine and temperatures of 40 degrees and higher. According to one of Cincinnati’s most experienced installation foremen (28 years), Paul Ogden of A New Rooftime, the best tip is that no roofing guns should be used at temperatures below 30 F. He said, “At Rooftime, we hand-nail all our winter installations at no extra charge to our homeowners.” All steep-slope roofers Kentucky

must be careful not to damage the underlayment, which can become brittle in cold weather. Only #30 felt or synthetic Deck Armor felt should be considered as underlayment, and all underlayments should be installed using cap nails, not staples. For winter re-roofing jobs, Rooftime warns: Do not remove more roofing than can be replaced on the same day. over night. The most common problem is ice dams, which occur when snow that has accumulated on a slanted roof melts and then forms icicles that hang from the eaves and gutters. Professional roofers can help minimize ice dams with drip edge flashing. Improper R-values in the attic insulation can also cause ice dams. Rooftime estimators begin every roof inspection by looking inside the attic to check the insulation, ventilation See ROOFTIME, Page 14

taxes, charitable gifts, unreimbursed employee expenses, uninsured casualty or theft losses, and miscellaneous deductions. However, your expenses must meet certain requirements to qualify as itemized deductions. For instance, certain miscellaneous deductions must exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income, and unreimbursed medical and dental costs must exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. If your tax return filing status is married filing separately, both spouses must claim the

same deduction type. If one spouse itemizes deductions, the other must also itemize, and vice versa. All taxpayers are eligible for certain deductions, regardless of whether they itemize. Examples include traditional IRA contributions, student loan interest, alimony payments, moving expenses and a portion of your self-employment tax (if applicable). Deductions like these are often described as “above-the-line” because they are deducted from gross income. Itemized and standard deductions are subtracted from adjusted gross income. sales? Rather than having what Craig calls, “fake sales,” Best Furniture believes in simply offering the best prices possible, every day. “We don’t believe in trying to fool our customers by marking merchandise up just to lower it for a promotion. We offer the best products at a fair price every day, and our customers appreciate that they can focus on getting their room right instead of feeling pressured that they have to buy today or they will miss the special deal,” said Craig. That doesn’t mean that Best Furniture isn’t confident in their low prices. “We do a lot of homework and know that our prices are the best around. In the rare instance that a customer finds the exact same item at a lower price in our market, we appreciate them bringing it to our attention and we are happy to take care of them,” added Craig. Best Furniture maintains an extensive online Clearance Center where you can enjoy extraspecial savings on quality floor samples and closeout merchandise. This merchandise represents huge savings, considering it has been marked down from already low prices. “Again, we don’t play games and mark our clearance items up ... these products are often priced below our cost.” Can I buy a sofa I see See FURNITURE, Page 13

Often, you can purchase a floor sample right out of the showroom, but Best prides itself on offering pieces custom made to your specifications and to fit your needs. “We can order almost any piece you see in our showroom in the finish or fabric you want, but we also have to make sure the item is there to show the next customer that comes in,” explained Craig. Best does offer a full selection of accent pieces, area rugs, accessories, lamps, decorative items and gifts throughout the store, and these items are always available to be taken with you or scheduled for delivery. items change with the seasons, so you will always find a fresh assortment of products for any room in your home. When will my furniture be delivered? Generally, customordered pieces take anywhere from four to six weeks, depending on the manufacturer. If you are selecting a piece that is available directly from their showroom, Best can usually deliver it the next day (and often on the same day, if it can be arranged). Best Furniture Gallery’s in-house delivery team will treat you, your furniture and your home with the same care and respect that you were treated with during your purchase. In fact, don’t be surprised if one of the owners shows up on delivery day. “From time to time, we

personally like to get out of the store and see the finished product in the customer’s home. It is a real pleasure for us and we think that the customer’s appreciate that little extra connection to the store,” said Craig. Best delivers five days a week, and will call the evening before with a two-hour time window. Also, they are happy to do their best to accommodate any special time requests, when possible. Do you offer financing? Yes. Best Furniture Gallery offers multiple, interest-free financing plans to help with the purchase of that new room. “We offer extended interest-free financing through Wells Fargo, where customers can enjoy benefits such as convenient monthly pay-

This year, don’t be so hard on yourself by making unrealistic resolutions. Try making smaller, more tangible goals … like flossing daily. For those who want to improve their oral health habits in 2013, Mortenson Family Dental shares some tips that will help you achieve your goal:

Brush twice and floss once daily

Brushing and flossing are still the foundation for maintaining healthy Kentucky

teeth and gums. Keep in mind that it’s better to brush sooner rather than later after a meal.

Visit a dentist in 2013

Don’t delay your regular dental checkups. The more you avoid the dentist, the more expensive dental care will be as ignored problems become more serious and painful. Be sure to ask your dentist about your insurance coverage, too. You’re most likely covered for two cleanings per year. If you don’t have insurance, be sure to ask your office about in-office savings plans they may offer. And remember, dentists do

Best Furniture Gallery’s in-home design service is a great value and helps to put the finishing touch on your beautiful room. What sets Best Furniture Gallery apart from other furniture stores? weeks or months. For many homeowners quick turnaround is reason enough to have a job done in the winter.

WOULD YOU?

SHOULD YOU?

Many roofing companies offer discounts for roofing jobs performed in the winter. For the same reasons that you will be able to receive faster service during the winter, you will also receive a better price than during warmer months. According to MissMona of Rooftime, estimators are instructed to winter discount to keep their crews working and off the unemployment line. By March, roofers begin to fill up their job boards, so Rooftime’s goal over the winter is to hang on to their skilled labor force. Most professional roof installers will provide you with the same labor warranty for a roof installed during winter as a roof installed at any other time of year. For example, Rooftime offers a 5-year labor warranty without regard to the time of installation. For a free rooftop inspection – complete with color pictures – friend A New Rooftime on Facebook, visit www.time2roof.com or speak to MissMona at 513-753-8463.

No matter which generation you belong to, you can’t argue with that. Stop into Best Furniture Gallery for unquestionable quality, style and value. Best Furniture Gallery is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Sunday to be with family.

Old roofs hate cold winters. Winter will only make a bad roof situation worse. As the temperatures fluctuate, your shingles expand and contract, causing curling and cracking in. When older roof shingles curl and there is a heavy snow, the weight of the snow causes some of those curled shingles to crack. This leads to a leaky roof. Also, when heavy snow freezes it can add more damage. An experienced roofer monitors the weather as closely as a TV meteorologist and schedules roof installs between bad-weather days. In Cincinnati, there are many days with bright sun and temperatures in the upper 50s. Last February, there was a fourday stretch where the temperature stayed above 65 degrees; Rooftime was able to have its two roof crews install a total of four new jobs in that time frame. Roofing contractors are less busy in the winter than in the summer. Homeowners in a rush might be able to get a new roof in a matter of days as opposed to waiting

Make it a game with your kids to get organized. Create a treasure hunt and you may rediscover items once thought to be lost. Tip 7: Organization needs consistency. Talk to your significant other or roommate about maintaining a united front on keeping things organized. Tip 6: Enlist help for larger organization efforts. Invite friends over to help clear out clutter; pay them with pizza and cold drinks for their work. Kentucky

Last year, Edgewood, Ky.-based Emeritus at Edgewood launched a free Home Visits program for local seniors. Named “You Don’t Have to Live with Us for Us to Help,” the program is part of Emeritus Senior Living’s Safely Somewhere program. “We are committed to making sure that every senior in need in our area finds the combination of programs and services that serves them best, even if they do not live with us,” says Deb Collar, Emeritus at Edgewood community relations director. “At Emeritus at Edgewood, we recognize that some of our area seniors may want to live at home as long as they can,” said Collar. “We also know that these seniors may face a variety of challenges

Tip 5: Donate duplicate or unwanted items to a charity that can then use your extras to support those in need. Tip 4: Pick your battles. Start with what is manageable, like a closet, and work your way toward larger projects, such as the basement or garage. Tip 3: Create routines. Make it a habit to tackle a new area of the home every month. Tip 2: Put it away now. Done using something? Instead of letting things pile up, put them away immediately. You can have plenty of places to put stuff when you get storage units, shelving and organization kits. Tip 1: Enjoy the spoils of victory. Cleaning and organizing is a daunting but rewarding task.
