work and to rule out any other health problems. Next they make an impression of your mouth so the appliance will fit properly. It usually takes three weeks for the appliance to be made. “It’s an FDA-approved, custommade, adjustable acrylic appliance,” said Kitzmiller. When your appliance arrives, they will instruct you on putting it in, adjusting it to fit, and caring for it. You’ll come back for a follow-up visit in about four weeks. “We’ll ask you some subjective questions such as are you sleeping better, if your partner has noticed a reduction in snoring and if you’re less tired during the day. Then we send you home with a portable sleep monitor to provide us with objective data to make sure the treatment is being effective,” Dr. Kitzmiller said. “I have been thrilled with the results from using my oral appliance. If you think you’re one of the 22 million Americans with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or struggle using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask when you sleep, it’s time to consider the oral appliance alternative available from Timothy J. Kitzmiller, DDS. It’s an easy and effective solution. “Many of our patients are already using a CPAP machine and come to us for an alternative,” said Lori Kitzmiller, Dr. Kitzmiller’s wife and the treatment coordinator at Cincinnati Dental Sleep Medicine, their associated practice dedicated to helping people with snoring and OSA. “Our oral appliance is a medical device that fits over your teeth and holds the lower jaw forward while you sleep, keeping the airway open.” If you have not already been diagnosed with OSA, your complimentary first visit will start with a series of questions to help identify your symptoms. “We use a number of screening tools to determine the likelihood that our patients may have sleep disordered breathing,” said Dr. Kitzmiller. Depending on your answers, you may be referred for an advanced screening or to a sleep lab for overnight testing, which often can be done using a home monitor. “Once a diagnosis of OSA has been confirmed, we move into the active phase of treatment,” said Dr. Kitzmiller. During the active phase, Dr. Kitzmiller will do a comprehensive oral and airway exam to make sure the appliance will

Best’s ways to start an interior decorating plan Spring is here, and that may be a signal to spruce up your home. If you’re not a professional interior decorator, you may not know where to start. Thanks to Best Furniture Gallery in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, help is just a visit away. “We’re here to listen to your needs, ask the right questions, recommend furniture and accessories, and help you put together a plan to transform any room in your home quickly and easily,” said Craig Reis, who coowns Best Furniture with his wife, Carolynn. Here are some things to keep in mind as you develop your plan. » Define your space. Once you clearly outline the purpose of the space,

family movie night?’ ” said Carolynn. “When you define how the room will be used you can more quickly determine pieces that you may need to repurpose, purchase or replace.” » Focus on one room at a time. Transforming your whole house at once is normally not a practical approach and can quickly frustrate and overwhelm you. Also, you still have to live in your home while the process is under way, so you wouldn’t want to redo your master bedroom without a spare to use in its place. » Take inventory of what you have. When you’ve owned something for a long time, it’s easy to take it for granted, and that means overlooking just how beautiful (or ugly) it is. Spring is the perfect time of year to take a step back and objectively look at what can be repurposed, transformed, moved to a different room, given away or disposed of. » Get rid of what you hate. “We all have a tendency to hang on to things that have outlived their

usefulness,” said Carolynn. “But our possessions should serve us well and bring us joy. If they don’t, it’s time for them to make someone else happy.” » Measure the room. “This is one of the first questions we ask,” explained Carolynn. Taking good measurements includes doorways; windows; fireplace width; and the distance between the window and door to the ceiling, the wall or the next opening. “Also measure the pieces you intend to keep – length, width, height and depth.” Not only do you need to know what size furniture the room can accommodate, you need to know if new pieces can pass through doorways and staircases on the way in. Carolynn also recommends using painter’s tape on the floor to outline furniture measurements so a client gets a sense of the volume of space that the furniture will occupy. » Look in your closet to choose your color palette. Five tips for the first grill out of the season

Let’s get that trusty old grill out of the garage. Wait, did I say “trusty” or “rusty”? You’re gonna’ cook on that thing? Here are five tips to get your season started: » 1. The day before. Look over the gear and clean out the animal nests. Birds and squirrels LOVE winter homes in grills. » 2. Splurge on replacement gear. Grilling tools and grilling grates too rusty? Get to the hardware store. Don’t be gross. Don’t add rust-flavor to and when you’re ready to redo any room in your home, plan to visit Best Furniture Gallery. your food. » 3. Have a plan. A pile of meat on a grill without a recipe is NEVER a good plan. But “BBQ Emergencies” do happen. A spur-of-themoment grill party should still have some steps to get started: keep your regular spices ready and your grill gear gathered in one place. » 4. Spices. When was the last time you bought seasonings? THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION? Most spices don’t go bad, but they do stale and lose

flavor. If it is a spice that you do not use that often buy it in smaller batches instead of the 40-gallon container at Costco. » 5. Write it down. Grab a notebook or get a notes program for your computer to keep tips, tricks and recipes organized. Preparation is always the key to a great grilling experience. A few steps get you to a great start for our favorite season. You should be there already! Make it memorable every time. m

Home improvements that make a home more valuable

ore and more homeowners are embarking upon home improvement projects, spending nearly $200 billion a year on home renovations, according to the National Association of Home Builders. If you’re looking to make some home improvements without breaking the bank, spend smartly and invest time and money now into the projects that will pay back later. Curb appeal

When it comes to first impressions, house hunt-

ers first notice curb appeal, or lack thereof. In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, curb appeal is important to 71 percent of homebuyers. So beautify the outdoor space to attract possible buyers by focusing on small exterior improvements that will pay off big, like planting seasonal shrubs, painting the front door, refreshing a rusty mailbox or replacing old porch lighting with updated fixtures. These minor details will make a major and

lasting statement. You can also increase the value of your home by giving your siding material an overhaul. Remodeling Magazine suggests replacing aluminum and vinyl siding with a durable fiber-cement mixture, which will recoup about 88 percent of its cost upon resale. It resists fire, rotting, moisture and termites – all potential hazards that could otherwise end up costing thousands. “Let your insurance agent know whenever you complete a renovation project to make sure any new upgrades to

your home are properly covered under your existing policy,” says Erie Insurance Vice President and Product Manager Joe Vahey. “In addition, some home improvement upgrades may entitle you to discounts, especially if renovations make the home safer or more secure.” Bed, bath and beyond

As house hunters head indoors, there are a few things that are likely to increase a sale. Most tend to look at kitchens and baths first. Most people seem to think that a huge kitchen

overhaul is necessary to snag interested buyers. However, Remodeling Magazine reports that you’ll actually recoup 8.5 percent more of the costs of a minor kitchen renovation compared to a major kitchen renovation. So instead of redoing the kitchen completely, accomplish a few minor DIY kitchen updates like changing out faucets and lighting fixtures, painting cabinets, adding new hardware to drawers and cabinets, and replacing old appliances with newer (and often more energy-efficient) models. Experts also say that adding an attic bedroom and finishing the basement are two of the largest renovations that give you the best return on your investment, allowing you to recoup more than 84 percent and nearly 78 percent of the cost, respectively.

Is your pool looking the worst for wear now that spring has sprung? Look to local expertise to “refurbish, repair and renovate” your way to summer fun. Sam Ionna, owner of S.I. Pool Care and S.I. Concrete, a division of S.I. Pool Care, suggests now is the best time to turn your backyard into “your home vacation station.” In business for more than 20 years, S.I. Pool Care can renovate your pool with new liners and new equipment, supplying quality products such as fiberglass to resurface your pool. “With a 25-year

ranty, we can provide you with professional fiberglass resurfacing,” Ionna added. “Most other companies will only provide you with a one-year warranty with their plaster resurfacing.” Besides a 25-year warranty, fiberglass resurfacing offers other advantages. For example, its nonporous surface helps prevent algae. “This unique process is much stronger than conventional surfaces, and it won’t crack like concrete, wrinkle and tear like liners, or rust and leak like steel walls,” Ionna said. In fact, fiberglass is recommended for any

pool installation. S.I. Pool Care has 70 models to choose from. “Not only can we get the perfect pool for you, we offer full packages to get the job finished from beginning to end,” Ionna said. Need to revive that concrete deck for your pool? The S.I. Concrete division can help. It can also provide exterior flatwork, including driveways, sidewalks, porches and patios. Visit the S.I.
