I WAS THINKING OF MY NEPHEW TODAY A SOLDIER AND A FRIEND.... I was thinking of my nephew today a soldier and a friend.... I was thinking about how I can’t wait for him to get here so I can see him again..... For, he is in a place where I wouldn’t want to be.... Living in tents in the desert and eating MRE’s. Sometimes there’s mortar fire and danger at every turn. IED’s and gunfire it makes my stomach churn........ I think about him often since he’s been away... Praying to God to bring him safely home in the month of May.... Sometimes I feel guilty when I’m sitting here alone..... All of these things I take for granted in the safety of my home.... I get to eat when I want, I get to sleep and have fun too... While he is staying up all night...doing what soldiers do.... From a little red headed Irish kid that I used to pick upon.... To a U.S. Navy Riverine getting the job done... He used to look up to me when we were growing up... Now the tides have turned and now I’m not so tough.... So here’s to you 1st Class Petty Officer McGinnis....... God Bless You and all that you do !! Hooorahhh !!! God bless all our military personnel and their families too !!! Written by-Travis Williams

HOSPITAL CHANGE SHOULD EASE PATIENT ACCESS COSHOCTON -- Getting an X-ray or lab tests done should soon be more convenient for the patients of several area physicians. Pleasant Valley Doctor’s Clinic, the Warsaw Medical Clinic, Medical Services of West Lafayette, the Coshocton Pediatric Clinic of Dr. Susan Merzweiler, Arrowhead Clinic of Newcomerstown and the Dresden Medical Clinic were all offices of Medical Services of Coshocton -- and they will now be a direct part of the Coshocton Hospital, said Greg Nowak, administrator. As a result, there will be some changes and enhancements to the way patients are registered for services at these physician offices. What it means is those clinics now will be directly linked to the hospital’s computer system, and if a physician orders diagnostic work, patients won’t need to register at the hospital. “It’s going to save you time, and hopefully provide a better service because that’s what it’s all about,” Nowak told a group of about 50 people gathered Thursday for the hospital’s annual meeting.

People have higher insurance deductibles, or those who previously had insurance often wait until it’s absolutely necessary to have care, and this can often lead to a more costly cure, he said. Coshocton Hospital went through a lean year in 2009, and as a result made some staff reductions and other changes earlier this year to help keep it costs down. The number of charity cases, those who meet federal and state guidelines as being unable to pay, increased from just less than $1 million to $3.3 million in 2009. Likewise, bad debt, bills not being paid by patients who should have been able to pay, increased sixfold, from just less than $1 million to more than $6.5 million in 2009. The result was an operating loss of $2.7 million, Nowak shared in his report to the group gathered for the lunch meeting. While many in the health-care field agree change was needed, the recent federal legislative reform is still being interpreted, Nowak said. “There are still challenges out there,” he said.

The change is being made to help address some of the reimbursement challenges that many healthcare providers are facing. “In a county with 14 to 15 percent unemployment, that’s a lot of people who aren’t paying their bills,” Nowak said. The change will upgrade the physicians’ offices to a higher level of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, he said. The Coshocton Hospital Family Physicians Clinic, at 440 Browns Lane in Coshocton, made this change about 18 months ago. Nowak said about 80 percent Ohio’s hospitals are facing higher rates of charity cases and uncompensated care.

Good news shared during the meeting was the opening of a permanent medical clinic in Warsaw and hospital also had its tri-annual Joint Commission and passed, Nowak said. He recognized the 168 volunteers with the Pink Ladies, the board members, Heart of Gold and TEAM, all of which help support the hospital at no charge. The hospital also celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. “Our hospital is like many others, we’ve had some struggles,” said Jason Bradford, vice-chairperson of the board of trustees. “But I’m confident we’re going to come out of it.”

Free represented the Coshocton Rotary Club when she won first place and a $300 cash prize. “Last year I won the local contest, but didn’t get anything at districts. This year I won the district so it’s improved,” Free said. “I enjoy it. I got into it mainly because I’m interested in drama, acting, performing in theater, so that was kind of what lead me to do a speech contest. It’s a different experience, enjoyable in a different kind of way.”

The 17-year-old home-schooled student will compete in May after winning the Rotary FourWay Test Speech Contest earlier this month.

The district competition was held at Ohio Christian University in Circleville, and Free competed among 13 other high school students. Free now will move on to the district competition in Athens and will also compete at the state contest in Columbus, said Nelson D. Coleman, a chairman on the Four-Way Test Speech Contest committee. Free had to talk about applying the Rotary FourWay Test in everyday relationships with other people. The four-way test questions, of the things we think, say or do, is it the truth, is it fair to all concerned, will it build good will and better friendships and will it be beneficial to all concerned. Last year Free focused her presentation on social-networking websites, so this year she thought it would be fitting to talk about texting. “What I did was put a Facebook survey out among my friends and asked them how often they text, what do you text about, who do you text, have you been lied to over text messages, built better

relationships because of texting,” Free said. She said she found that texting is beneficial for basic communication or emergency situations. “But I came to the conclusion that using texting as a primary form of communication through young people, texting constantly is not very beneficial,” she said. She explained her survey and what she found in a five- to seven-minute speech. “Dr. Don Tupper did a great job of helping me, advising me and getting me information about the competition,” she said. “He’s been an enormous asset to me and is to the Rotary Club.
