BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS
Campbell wants to make a ‘splash’ at A.J. Jolly Chris Mayhew cmayhew@communitypress.com
Campbell County is considering building an RV campground and splash park as money-making ventures for A.J. Jolly Park. Fiscal Court unanimously approved hiring Element Design of Lexington and Louisville July 1 to perform a feasibility study at a cost not to exceed $12,400. At 1,000 acres, A.J. Jolly Park located south of Alexandria is one of the biggest county parks in Kentucky. Campbell County will split the study’s cost evenly with the nonprofit Jolly Community Development Council. “Somewhere for the kids to get wet has been one of the top
requests in every survey we’ve done,” said Walt Dunlevy, chairman of the community development council. Maximizing an optimum design for the space available and projecting costs are the study’s purposes, said Dunlevy, a Cold Spring resident. A splash park and RV campground were both part of a Jolly Park Master Plan approved by Fiscal Court in March and developed with assistance from the Jolly Community Development Council, said Kim Serra, assistant county administrator. “The RV park and splash zone are actually two of the parts of the master plan that have the possibility of generating revenue,” Serra said.

reinforcing situation.” “People would go to the RV park because they want to use the splash park and vice versa,” Pendery said.

Dual Campbell County government offices means paper records kept by the Campbell County Clerk, some dating to 1792, are kept on opposite ends of the county. Cold Spring resident Doris Schmidt said she did research at the clerk’s offices in Alexandria and Cold Spring to find where her ancestors used to live ahead of an upcoming family reunion. “The normal person doesn’t know where to look and how to go about it,” Schmidt said. “But I have no complaints. The staff was friendly and helpful.” For records after computerization in 1995, north and south Campbell County files can be found in either office. History affects researchers seeking earlier records, said Campbell County Clerk Jim Luersen. Prior to Kenton County’s creation out of Campbell County in 1840, Newport was the county seat. Afterward, the
FORT THOMAS — Cyrstal Miller’s avoidance of haircuts will put locks back on the head of a child who has none because of a medical condition. North Avenue Salon stylist Katie Rademaker snipped 12 inches of Miller’s hair July 1. Rademaker gathered Miller’s locks together into two ponytails with rubber bands before cutting. Rademaker’s scissors took less than 30 seconds to lose hair Miller has grown out for two years. North Avenue Salon opened in Fort Thomas in June at 48 N. Fort Thomas Ave. in the former Shari’s on the Avenue. “I hate getting my hair cut,” said Miller, 35, who made her first Locks of Love donation. Usually, the Walton resident gets it cut before she has at least 10 inches of extra hair, she said. Locks of Love requires at least 10-inches of hair per donation, according to the nonprofit’s website at bit.ly/1JBeigC. Miller said she’s read stories about others donating to Locks
