Dear Friends The Information Age is an 80 year wave of economic and societal change that is in its second half, where business value comes from exploitation of technology rather than from installation. In the first half of the Information Age, the primary focus was the technology itself; this is where great fortunes were made by companies like IBM and Microsoft. In this period, the majority of companies that gained competitive advantage did so by differential access to the technology from these providers — for example, by having more capital to invest in it or better skills at installing it in their businesses. In the second half of the age, as technology becomes ubiquitous, consumerized, cheaper and more equally available to all, the focus for differentiation moves to exploitation of the technology and to the information it processes. It is already noticeable that the great fortunes of the second half of the age are being made by companies like Google and Facebook, which are not traditional makers of technology. In this period, the majority of companies that enjoy competitive advantage will gain it from a differential ability to see and exploit the opportunities of new kinds of information. Four generally useful information likely to dominate competition this decade, in the way that process information and customer information did in the past 15 years: • Location information, which is now maturing in availability, will offer opportunities to better optimize the utilization of almost any movable physical asset (human or inanimate) in almost any business. • Sustainability information will be vital in advancing business models in industries that are adapting to the realities of a finite Earth meeting the demands of massive, consumerizing emerging markets. • DNA information and the rapidly falling cost of obtaining it will obviously be critical to innovation and productivity leaps in agriculture, medical care and pharmaceuticals, but it will also impact insurance and other sectors. • Social graph information will help companies “X-ray” and understand organization, team design, culture and other factors impacting knowledge worker productivity, yielding valuable insights to advance the intellectual service economy the way time and motion study did for manufacturing in the 20th century. Beyond these, context, gesture, the live state of everyday objects (Internet of Things), inherent identity (untagged, imagerecognition-based), human emotional state and even brain response to stimuli are all new types of information that are at the radar’s edge or are starting to be brought into play within businesses.

HP has announced a new scale-out converged application solution and associated services for the SAP HANA platform. The offerings speed and simplify application transactions and analysis, while enabling organizations to use their data faster for informed decision making. The newest addition to the portfolio of HP AppSystem for SAP HANA is a highly scalable solution. It is built on an HP Converged Infrastructure that includes industry-leading HP ProLiant BladeSystem servers and the HP X9300 IBRIX Network Storage System with HP P6500 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA). It delivers high availability and storage capacity for mission-critical workloads running on SAP application software, enabling clients to run business-critical applications. The solution can be easily integrated with an existing implementation of SAP Business Suite software or the SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (BW) component to accelerate time to decision. Other client benefits include: • Investment protection by rapidly scaling to handle at least 640 cores and 8 terabytes (TB) of memory. • Scalable performance and storage capacity of up to 16 petabytes with the HP X9300 IBRIX Network Storage System. Samsung and Sony Shift to New LCD Panel Seagate Completes Acquisition Of Business Alliance Samsung’s Hard Disk Drive Business Samsung and Sony have announced that the two companies have signed agreements to transition the current business relationship with respect to LCD panels. Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony’s shares of S-LCD Corporation (“S-LCD”), the two companies’ LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. In consideration for the
share transfer, cash consideration of approximately KRW 1.08 trillion will be paid to Sony by Samsung. Concurrently, the two companies have entered into a new strategic agreement for the supply and purchase of LCD panels with a goal of enhancing the competitiveness of both companies. The agreement also allows Samsung and Sony to continue cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology. For Sony, this transaction will enable it to monetize its shares in S-LCD and aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility. With whole ownership of S-LCD, Samsung anticipates heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations. Established in April 2004, S-LCD has continued to deliver advanced and cost-competitive LCD panels to both of its parent companies, contributing to the expansion of the respective parties’ TV businesses, and the large-sized LCD TV market overall. However, LCD panel and TV market conditions have now changed. In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance.

Emerson Network Power has brought delight to its Channel Partners with ‘Big Bang Dhamaka’ – a scheme to reward NSPs and VARs on New Year’s Eve. Seagate announced the closing of the transaction to acquire the hard disk drive (HDD) business of Samsung Electronics. Under the terms of the transaction, Seagate has gained select elements of Samsung’s HDD business, including assets, infrastructure and employees that enable Seagate to drive scale and innovation. These assets include Samsung’s leading M8 product line of high-capacity, 2.5-inch HDDs. Samsung employees joining Seagate include a number of senior managers and designengineering employees from Samsung’s Korea facility, who will focus on development of small form-factor products for the mobile compute market. N.Y. Park, senior vice president and general manager, will oversee Seagate’s product development activities in Korea and serve as country manager of the Korea design center, reporting to Bob Whitmore, Seagate’s executive vice president and CTO. This transaction was announced in April 2011 along with a series of other agreements between Seagate and Samsung. Seagate is supplying disk drives to Samsung for PCs, notebooks and consumer electronics devices. Samsung is supplying its market-leading semiconductor products for use in Seagate’s enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), solid-state hybrid drives and other products. The companies have also extended and enhanced their existing patent cross-license agreement and have expanded cooperation to co-develop enterprise storage solutions.
IBM continues geographic expansion
IBM has announced the opening of a branch office in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in South India, as part of the company’s continued geographic expansion initiative to increase its presence in key growth markets. In 2011 IBM has opened six new branch offices in India as it expands its reach to smaller, rapidly developing cities as part of its plan to establish a presence in over 40 cities across India/South Asia by 2013. Visakhapatnam is an important port city in South India. It has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years due to the development of petroleum, steel, fertilizer and IT industries. IBM has been present in Visakhapatnam since 2007 through its global delivery centre that provides IBM services to clients around the world. The opening of the new branch office in Viskhapatnam will give a boost to IBM’s business in the region enabling it to strengthen its relationships with clients and partners and provide solutions and services in high growth areas such as information management, IT security, cloud computing and business analytics. The small and medium sized enterprise (SME) sector is one of the fastest growing segments of the Indian economy from which IBM is experiencing strong demand. IBM is working to spur innovation in this sector by providing advanced technologies, once reserved for larger enterprises with large budgets, through its increased local presence and relationships with local business partners. To support its regional expansion initiative, IBM has been actively recruiting new business partners across the country - in 2011 over 1000 new business partners from India/South Asia registered via IBM’s PartnerWorld program.

Doug Ingraham to Lead Brocade Alliances
Brocade has announced the appointment of Doug Ingraham to the position of vice president of Alliances. Within this role, Ingraham will oversee the Brocade Strategic Technology and OEM Alliances business units, as well as the Strategic Program Council. Ingraham will report directly to Brocade CMO, John McHugh. In this new role, Ingraham will oversee several key areas relating to Brocade Alliances initiatives, with a specific focus on forging new alliances and deepening existing relationships with Strategic Technology Alliance and OEM partners. Ingraham will also oversee the establishment of a program framework for the development of cloud ecosystem alliance partners to educate and extol the benefits of solutions built upon Brocade Virtual Compute Block technology and the Brocade CloudPlex architecture. For over two decades, Ingraham has been a fixture within the networking industry, applying his leadership skills to a variety of roles. Prior to joining Brocade, Ingraham held positions at Cisco Systems, StorageTek and AT&T, where he oversaw engineering and marketing efforts related to data and storage networking products. Ingraham joined Brocade through the acquisition of McDATA in 2006. Most recently, Ingraham served as vice president of Product Management for Brocade Data Center products, where he set the strategic direction for the company’s Fibre Channel business and led the market introduction of the Brocade VDX family of products, the industry’s first true Ethernet fabric switching solutions for highly virtualized and cloud-optimized data centers.
Blue Coat names Ambarish Deshpande as MD
Blue Coat has announced the appointment of Ambarish Deshpande as managing director of India, responsible for sales, alliance strategies and growth of the Indian market. Mr. Deshpande will report to Steve Rowland, vice president of sales for Blue Coat in Asia Pacific. “An established sales veteran with more than 17 years of experience, Ambrish has an impressive record in building teams, driving market expansion and putting successful channel strategies in place. His extensive network and proven business acumen will help Blue Coat provide next generation WAN optimization and Web security solutions to enterprises throughout India,” said Steve Rowland. Deshpande most recently was director of alliance, channels and mid-market South Asia at McAfee. Prior to joining McAfee, he spent seven years in Symantec where he grew the security business to $20 million in revenue. Deshpande is credited with starting the Indian sales operations of IronPort, which was acquired by Cisco. During his three-year tenure in IronPort, he helped grow the company’s revenue to $6 million. Earlier in his career, he held business development and product management positions at Tech Pacific Technologies (now Ingram), Samsonite and JVC. Deshpande is a graduate of the University of Mumbai and holds a postgraduate management degree from NMIMS, Mumbai. “Blue Coat is uniquely positioned with its forward-thinking solutions and technology that help enterprises safely and effectively leverage the transformational forces of the Web and Cloud for their networks,” said Mr. Deshpande. “I look forward to leading the team and increasing our presence in India, while strengthening our channel to realize the fuller potential of the Blue Coat business in this region.”

IBM has unveiled seven new social networking and collaboration mobile apps specifically designed to address enterprise-class requirements in India. Emerson Launches Liebert XDR Fan-less Cooling Solution
As data center managers seek out new ways to design and support higher densities in smaller spaces, Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson, a global leader in maximizing availability, capacity and efficiency of critical infrastructure, has introduced the Liebert XDR in India. Liebert XDR is an innovative rear-door heat exchanger that removes heat from IT racks before it even enters the data center. Liebert XDR packs in high density servers in a small footprint thereby eliminating the need for expansion or new facilities in Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs). XDR The Liebert XDR micro-channel heat exchangers are mounted in a moveable door, which is fixed to a frame attached to the rear of the rack. It relies on server fans for hot air movement across a cooling coil, utilizing a pumped refrigerant that is 700 percent more efficient at removing heat than water. The pumped refrigerant also eliminates any danger of equipment damage from water leakage. The Liebert XDR saves on both as there is no need for fans to move heat across the room to wall or floor-mounted cooling systems,” said Mr. BB. The door opens more than 100 degrees, for full access to the internal servers and other equipment, and allows for side-by-side placement of racks in open and closed positions. Uniquely, the Liebert XDR includes a flexible connection of hard-piped, pumped-refrigerant lines through the rack door’s hinge pivot points, which enables it to be robust and leak-free through more than one million repeated door openings and extended periods of time with no movement. These overhead piping connections are completely static - no moving components will interfere with opening or closing the door. Pumped refrigerant from a Liebert XDP or Liebert XDC enters the fixed frame and passes through an innovative hinge to the door. Infrastructure virtualization is a powerful trend in the industry today, but the concept of virtualization has been around for many years. Virtualization technology has been pursued by vendors as a framework to divide the resources of a computer into multiple execution environments using a variety of hardware and software abstraction techniques, resulting in the separation of the logical interface from the physical machine. Virtualization originated in the 1960s as a technique to optimize the use of very expensive and relatively scarce computing resources. With the advent of less-expensive computing technologies like Intel-based servers and the PC, the need to virtualize simply due to computing costs was mitigated. But as servers and PCs have proliferated, the need to more effectively manage and utilize these resources has risen to the forefront. Data center environments are becoming more complex and heterogeneous, resulting in higher management costs. Virtualization makes it easier to optimize IT resources by standardizing infrastructure that needs to be managed. Among the first data center assets to be targeted for virtualization were Intel-based servers. The approach was to virtualize the application layer, which allowed multiple application instances to share a single operating system (OS). This allowed IT to address the challenges of resource under-utilization, unsecured data, application management and deployment that are commonplace in today’s data centers, while providing the desktop experience that users needed to get their jobs done. The next evolution was to virtualize the server at the machine level. There are two primary approaches to this type of virtualization: hosted and hypervisor. With the hosted approach, the virtualization layer is installed as an application and relies on the host OS for device support and physical resource management. In contrast, with the hypervisor approach, the virtualization layer is installed prior to the OS and directly provides the device and resource management support. While both approaches are effective forms of machine-level virtualization, the hypervisor approach is more efficient because it directly interfaces with the hardware. Desktop Deployment Alternatives Desktop virtualization offers a way to extend the benefits of virtualization – better performance, lower TCO, higher security and greater flexibility – to the full desktop. The Windows desktop is the most ubiquitous and expensive application to own and secure. Each desktop is supported by a physical PC that creates numerous challenges including data security; update and refresh cycles; power, heat and space consumption; and the management of local packaged applications like productivity suites and browsers, as well as home-grown applications. A combination of techniques can be used to virtualize a desktop. Recently, machine-level virtualization has become a viable alternative for delivering a virtual desktop experience. The virtual desktop is commonly deployed as two different models: shared and dedicated. The shared model is delivered via published desktops, while the dedicated model can be delivered via several options including virtual machines, physical machines or a combination of the two. 1. Which desktop or combination of desktops is ultimately chosen depends on the specific needs of the user.
Choosing the Right Desktop A primary mission of IT is to deliver applications that enable core business processes. The infrastructure built to support this mission is comprised of a myriad of components including the network, hardware, software and support personnel. As the business environment becomes more complex due to globalization and competition, IT is called upon to facilitate. Typically this involves looking for the best way to deliver larger, more complex applications to a constantly changing mix of desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Further complicating IT’s challenge are pressures from business and government regulatory agencies to secure access to sensitive customer and business information. From the viewpoint of IT, administrators are looking to maximize the number of users per server and simplify ongoing management and application deployment. On the other hand, users want quick response times and ease of use. This environment is typical of retail stores or call centers and is optimally suited for the shared model. A knowledge worker adds value by processing existing information to create new information that can be used to define and solve problems. Knowledge workers rely heavily on desktop automation to perform their jobs. They require the ability to personalize and control their desktop with minimal limitations. Examples of this type of control include the ability to boot the OS as needed or have multiple images of the OS on a single physical desktop. Workers who require this level of personalization include remote software developers as well as administrative and backoffice workers. The best deployment for this environment is the virtual machine option of the dedicated model. This option offers businesses the intellectual property protection and user productivity that they need to get the most from these workers, which tend to be among the highest compensated in the organization. IT is looking to be in a position to respond rapidly to business requirements while providing remote support and streamlined management. Users simply want to have maximum control of their desktop. There is another type of knowledge worker who requires not only the ability to control and customize their desktop, but also maximum desktop performance. This must be achieved in an environment where physical desktop space is limited. This exact situation is found in the financial services industry with its equity and bond traders. The expectations for desktops in this
environment are 100% availability, the fastest-possible processor speeds and unlimited personalization options. Any downtime suffered by these workers is quantified in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions. The optimal desktop deployment in this situation is the physical machine option of the dedicated model. This type of deployment offers all of the benefits of the virtual option, while also providing a dedicated physical machine without the associated space and power requirements. Due to the central location of the physical devices, IT maintains the ability to rapidly respond to user requirements, which also enhances management and deployment capability.

The Selection Process When deciding how best to deliver applications to the user, there is a process that should be followed predicated on using business value to drive desktop selection and deployment. The first step is to determine what users require to get their jobs done. This includes understanding the types of devices they will use to access applications. Once the access devices are determined, the second step is selecting the optimal type of desktop. This involves choosing either shared, dedicated virtual or dedicated physical desktop options. The third step in the process is choosing the desktop delivery model: either PC-based (blade PC or desktop) or serverbased deployments. The final step involves choosing the most appropriate application delivery model. The options include locally installed applications, streamed applications and virtualized applications. SAP to Accelerate Cloud Strategy with Acquisition of SuccessFactors
SAP and SuccessFactors has announced have entered into a definitive merger agreement with SuccessFactors, the marketleading provider of cloud-based human capital management (HCM) solutions, pursuant to which a subsidiary of SAP would offer to acquire all outstanding shares of common stock of SuccessFactors for $40.00/per share in cash, representing an enterprise value of approximately $3.4 billion. The acquisition will add SuccessFactors’ widely respected team and technology to SAP’s powerful cloud assets, significantly accelerating SAP’s momentum as a provider of cloud applications, platforms and infrastructure. The combination of SAP and SuccessFactors will establish an advanced end-to-end offering of cloud and on-premise solutions for managing all relevant business processes. The SuccessFactors board of directors has unanimously approved the transaction. The per share purchase price represents a 52% premium both over the December 2nd closing price and the one month volume weighted average price per share. The transaction will be funded from SAP’s cash on hand and a €1 billion term loan facility. The closing of the tender offer is conditioned on SuccessFactors stockholders tendering at least a majority of the outstanding shares of SuccessFactors common stock (on a fully diluted basis) and clearances by relevant regulatory authorities. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012 and be slightly dilutive to SAP’s Non-IFRS earnings per share in 2012 and accretive in subsequent years.
