more birthdays. Quinnipiac University is proud to present the 2014 Relay for Life, to benefit the American Cancer Society. Our 6th annual overnight fight for cancer will take place on April 11th through 12th 2014 in our TD Bank Arena located on our scenic York Hill campus. I would like to extend to you an invitation in saving lives as a corporate sponsor as we strive to reach our goal of raising $100,000. In recent years, the American Cancer Society awarded us with a Top 5 Youth Per Capita Award. It is our goal to achieve this honor again in 2014. By becoming a corporate sponsor, your company can reach many people in the Quinnipiac and New Haven County community, while doing your own part in fighting this disease. Please look over this booklet, as it contains valuable information regarding sponsorship and incentives accompanying each level of support. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Chair of the Corporate Sponsorship Committee, Ciera Omos, at (401) 465- 4530 or at . What is Relay for Life? In May 1985, Dr. Gordon Klatt began his 24 hour marathon around a track in Tacoma, Washington- ultimately raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event.

Relay For Life is the largest non-profit fundraising activity in the world, in which all proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. Relay is held so we can Celebrate our cancer survivors, Remember those we’ve lost, and Fight Back against cancer. On Friday, April 11 – Saturday, April 12, 2014, the sixth annual Relay For Life at Quinnipiac will bring together students, families, and friends into one community. Together we will Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. We will celebrate cancer survivors by inviting them to participate in the Survivors Lap, the first lap around the tract. The Luminaria Ceremony is another highlight of the event. A Luminaria is a small bag with a candle inside that makes it glow. Each Luminarea bears the name of a person who has battled cancer, or has a reason why we Relay. At dusk we light the candles along the path. They will burn into the night honoring, and memorializing those who have faced cancer, lighting a path of hope.

“Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. But it cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul.”’ - Jim Valvano

Investing in Hope Sponsorship Benefits Quinnipiac University invites you to bolster your company’s reputation and commitment to our community by becoming a corporate sponsor. Relay for Life may only be a one night event, however its impact lives on everyday. By becoming a corporate sponsor you will have the opportunity to gain exposure for your business through flyers, banners, and T- Shirts- all of which last far longer than when the last Luminera candle is blown out. By creating a team with your employees, you are also given the opportunity to create a deeper bond within your work team. Your commitment to the health and well being of others will inspire your employees and encourage an improved internal image. How Can You Help Us Achieve our Goals? Monetary Donations: Every donation that we receive goes towards the American Cancer Society. Your money is put directly towards supporting cancer research, education, treatments, and programs. You can find a complete list of how your money is used by visiting All donations are also tax-deductible. In-Kind Donations: In addition to monetary donations, we are also in need of incentive prizes which help us to motivate our participants, food donations to use for our dinners at our event and survivor gifts, which are given to each of the survivor guests who attend our event. Also, we need items to include in our prize drawings that we conduct to raise more funds. Both monetary and in-kind donations will have a positive impact on our event and more importantly, make a lasting impression in our fight against cancer. Donating to our event is also a way to attract positive attention to your business or corporation through advertising opportunities.

Survivor Profile: Katie Winkle, Co- Chair Being a sophomore at Quinnipiac and an event co-chair for Relay For Life is an amazing accomplishment to say the least. I feel as though I am extremely blessed. I am in the nursing program at Quinnipiac and from Orange, CT. Relay for Life has always something that has been close to my heart. On June 20 th 2006 my life was forever changed. I was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 13. My “normal” teenage life was abruptly put on hold and I endured countless rounds of chemotherapy, blood transfusions and bone marrow biopsies. My friends and family stood by my side through thick and thin and I honestly believe they are the ones who kept me going. I had an incredible staff of doctors and nurses who took care of me at Yale New-Haven Children’s Hospital. Not only does medicine cure you, but also I truly believe that it is the people who are by your side who have a huge influence on the outcome. I am very thankful to say that this past February I have just celebrated being in remission for five years. Even though I have side effects and have to go for monthly check-ups, I am so blessed to be called a survivor. My illness with cancer has shaped the young woman I am today. It has been filled with many ups and downs. Losing so many friends along the journey has been heartbreaking and definitely one of the hardest things to witness. I will forever cherish the kids who lost their battles and strive my best to find a cure for cancer. My life will never be the same since my diagnosis day, however I do believe that cancer has enabled me to truly enjoy every single day and realize that life is too short to be anything but happy. This journey in my life has opened so many new doors and opportunities for me. Relay For Life is an incredible event that I keep so close to my heart. Being involved ever since my diagnosis, I feel as though this is my way of giving back to my community and pay it forward. Every summer I dedicate my time with children who are fighting cancer. I have the privilege of being a camp counselor at Camp Rising Sun. This camp is a camp for children who had or have cancer. I attended this incredible camp once as a camper and now have the honor of being a counselor. It truly inspires me that I am not alone in the fight against cancer. Hosting annual blood drives, and being an active participant in the Tommy Fund Walk to help Yale’s pediatric oncology unit, and “Light the Night” to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma is something I look forward to every year. This event at Quinnipiac University is one to always remember. I feel that I am one step closer to finding a cure for this awful disease that impacts so many innocent people. I know that Quinnipiac University is filled with support and determination, and I know as we relay around the track we can live out the words: Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.
