PLUGIN CURATORIAL STATEMENT PLUGIN KÜRATÖRYAL ÖNYAZI Dedicated to showcasing artworks at the intersection of science, technology, politics and art, Plugin is now in its 4th year, running alongside Contemporary Istanbul between the 3rd and 6th of November 2016 at the Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC). This year, Plugin takes up the idea of Networked Space not only as a curatorial concept, but also as a mode of artistic production and point of inquiry into our social imaginary and consciousness. The subject of networks is approached as an epistemological question, investigating the structures of our digitized reality to allow for a renegotiation of the relations between physical and cognitive spaces. Information technologies have triggered economic and societal changes that have led to a radical reorganization of work and production processes as well as of space and communication. Networked Space attempts to offer a multitude of perspectives with regards to signification, materiality and knowledge creation. A network is manifest as a space constituted in and through the interconnections of points, nodes and curves. Connectivity is one of the main aspects and characteristics of the modern network society and has changed many of the structural relations of our time – it constitutes a disintegration of modernity’s order, dismantling the century old dualism of the nature/ culture divide, which blurs the clear boundaries between bodies, objects and contexts. Old hierarchies are broken down and are being replaced by rhizomatic formations, which deny the determination of a concrete centre of coherence. The ontology of networks can help us find ways of articulating some of the most urgent challenges of our time regarding environmental, economic, and geopolitical changes. To address them, we are required to analyse a multitude of interconnected systems and forces, which restructure our understanding of the phenomena. These are constructed of a multitude of interactions between manifold elements that produce dynamic systems that escape a unitary appraisal. The technological, economic and political processes cannot be reduced to a totality but produce non-linear flows of information that create complex assemblages which can open up new structures of thinking. Spread across the premises of the fair, galleries participating at Plugin are physically networked into the framework of the art fair, constituting an interconnection of nodes. They thus occupy a heterogeneous space, caught in a multitude of interlocking systems. They are to be understood as a series of discontinuous segments, their points of intersection both unifying and dispersing existing streams of information. Hence, they constitute to an interconnected phenomena. Furthermore, the artworks assembled for this exhibition speak to different aspects of our networked condition, and provoke us to consider the interactions between socioeconomic and environmental states in terms of processes and flows, reconfiguring our very understanding of being-in-the-world. They develop states of encounters as models of relationality between humans and the world. The works provide means for thinking past the traditional rigid dualism of nature/culture, subject/object and for articulating a cosubstantiality of these facets. Bilim, teknoloji ve siyasetin kesișim noktasında yer alan sanat eserlerini sergilemeye adanmıș Plugin, dördüncü yılında 3-6 Kasım tarihleri arasında Contemporary Istanbul ile birlikte İstanbul Kongre Merkezi ve İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Uluslararası Kongre ve Sergi Sarayı’nda gerçekleștiriliyor. Plugin bu sene Networked Space (Ağ tabanlı mekan) fikrini yalnızca küratöryel bir konsept olarak değil, aynı zamanda sanatsal bir üretim biçimi ve toplumsal tahayyül ve bilincimize yönelik bir sorgulama noktası olarak ele alıyor. Bu konseptte, network’ler, yani ağlar meselesi epistemolojik bir soru olarak irdeleniyor ve dijitalleștirilmiș gerçekliğimizin yapıları sorgulanarak fiziksel ve bilișsel mekanlar arasındaki ilișkinin yeniden gözden geçirilmesine imkan tanınıyor. Bilișim teknolojileri, iș ve üretim süreçlerinin yanı sıra, mekan ve iletișim kavramlarının da köklü bir șekilde yeniden düzenlenmesine yol açan ekonomik ve toplumsal değișimleri tetikledi. Networked Space anlam, maddesellik ve bilgi yaratımı ekseninde sayısız bakıș açısı sunmayı hedefliyor. Bir ağ, noktaların, düğümlerin ve kıvrımların bağlantısında ve bu bağlantı vasıtasıyla olușan bir alan olarak kendini gösterir. Bağlantısallık, modern ağ toplumunun temel noktalarından ve özelliklerinden biridir. Ek olarak, çağımızın pek çok yapısal ilișkisini değiștirmiștir: Bağlantısallık bedenler, nesneler ve bağlamlar arasındaki açık sınırları bulandıran asırlık doğa/kültür ikiliğini alașağı ederek modern düzenin çözülmesini sağlar. Eski hiyerarșiler bozulur ve yerlerine somut bir bağdașım merkezinin belirlenimini reddeden rizomatik olușumlar gelir. Ağların ontolojisi, çevresel, ekonomik ve jeopolitik değișimlere dair çağımızın en önemli zorluklarını dile getirme yollarını bulmamızda bize yardımcı olabilir. Bu zorlukların üstüne gitmek için, fenomen olgusu anlayıșımızı yeniden kuran, birbiri içine geçmiș çoklu sistemleri ve güçleri analiz etmemiz gerekir. Bu sistemler ve güçler, üniter bir değerden kaçan dinamik sistemleri üreten çok çeșitli öğeler arasındaki çoklu etkileșimlerden olușur. Teknolojik, ekonomik ve politik süreçler tek bir bütüne indirgenemez; bu süreçler yeni düșünme yapıları olușturabilen komplike birleșmeler yaratan ve doğrusal olmayan bilgi akıșları üretir. Plugin’e katılan, fuar binasına yayılmıș galeriler fuarın yapı iskeletine fiziksel olarak bağlılar ve böylece bir ağ bağlantısı olușturuyorlar. Bu sayede, iç içe geçmiș çoklu sistemler içinde heterojen bir alan kaplıyorlar. Var olan bilgi akıșlarını hem birleștiren hem dağıtan kesișim noktalar6ına sahip süreksiz kesitler dizisi olarak algılanabilirler. Böylece, birbirlerine bağlı bir fenomen olușturuyorlar. Dahası, bu sergi için kurulan eserler, bizim bu birbirine bağlanmıș mevcudiyetimizin farklı yönlerine hitap ediyor ve dünyada olma anlayıșımızı ters yüz ederek sosyoekonomik ve çevresel durumlar arasındaki etkileșimleri süreçler ve akıșlar açısından düșünmemize yol açıyor; karșılașma hallerini insanlar ve dünya arasındaki ilișkisellik modelleri olarak geliștiriyor. Söz konusu sanat eserleri geleneksel ve katı doğa/kültür ile özne/nesne ikiliklerini așarak bu özelliklerin birlikte var olduğunu ifade etme yolu sağlıyor. Yasemin Keskintepe Galeri & Proje Yöneticisi
