Timeless Tower Modular Hotel in Miami Beach This project aims at utilizing shipping containers, at the same time exploring the possibilities of modular building techniques, and looking for innovative ways to re-use shipping containers as modular housing units. Complying with the competition requirements, the project gives me a chance to examine different methods of design in order to develop to the final design solution. By placing the “hotel room at the back of the building, the hotel tries to provide customers a sense of tranquility and serenity. 6551 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, Florida T. Fowler_Fall 09’

Urban Beacon SANTA MONICA CENTER OF EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE

Located at the corner of Colorado Avenue and 4th Street, the site is devoted to an art center aiming to act as a landmark of the area. The city planners also hope to create an uniqueness for the city by establishing the art center. My first impression about the site is its uniqueness of being surrounded by three roads with heavy traffic. It is an ideal location to erect an eye-catchiing building like such. In order to minimize the noise from traffic and to fulfill the city planner’s hope to making the art center as a landmark, I take the approach of developing the art center vertically and by using a glass tubing facade to draw a difference among the surrounding structures. Site Strategies

the unique feature of the site is that it is surrounded by three roads with heavy traffic.

and rather than using opague materials, the structure use a reflective and transparent material trying to strength the idea of the “urban beacon.

therefore the approach is to establish a tower which can be a more iconic structure than a typical single story theater design.

Kaleidoscope Washington DC Intercity Bus Terminal The intercity bus terminal is a proposal for downtown development of Washington DC, after the old convention center has been taken down. It aims at providing a whole new experience for travelers who get used to wait at bus terminals that do not have sufficient waiting space. New York Ave x 11th St, Washington DC J. Foote_Spring 11’

Connecting theinside People Affordable Housing the Central Business District of Hong Kong My proposal is to put an affordable housing development in Central, the central business district of Hong Kong, providing an alternative in contrast to build a new government headquarter in this overdeveloped area. By placing a housing development, which is a system that can sustain the growth of city, into the business district, the proposal focuses on solving some of the urban problems that cause the Hong Kong residents to live an unsustainable life style. Suggestions based on Current Situation

because of the “floor area ratio” approach, spaces inside each unit are not usable, and cannot response to the climate.

hong kong is a compact city with huge housing demand. besides the private sector, government subsidized housing programs also try to achieve the highest floor area ratio in order to fit in as many citizen as possible. this approach sacrifices all other spaces that are supposed to be part of the citizens’ lives. each residential units are just connected with a narrow circulation path that leads to the elevator lobby. there are no connections and communitions between neighbors; even though there are thousands of people concentrate in one area, this design approach still hinders the development of the city.

to improve the traditional design of affordable housing which only provides an apartment and ignores the residents’ social needs. the proposed design provides a rectangular space to the people; therefore, they can design their home easier than the traditional layouts. nine units are combined together to form a small community within the whole housing complex

different units or “communities” are connected by corridors and stairs trying to provide more chances for residents to meet and to talk with each other.

Strategies

inside the cbd, the site locates next to an eight lanes road. the noise from the road not only disturbs the residents but also the pedestrians. instead of enclosing the structure with glass cladding, the bottom three stories use an open structure to let the noise transmit to the central garden. this can reduce the bounce back sound to create interference with the incoming sound.

to preserve the view of the harbor, and to let citizens to enjoy the views in stead of allowing all the high-rise business buildings to block everything from the harbor.

Misc 01 Tensegrity -

Furniture Design Series The furniture design series started from a class in 2010. The idea is to create an elegant piece of furniture and to demonstrate how the piece of furniture can interact with human bodies. The approaches that I adopt are using tensegrity structures to show the elegance; while at the same time, the tensions of the cables and the compressions of the member pieces can show how the body weights transfer to the structure.
