Things Above from Fr. Bilot As I sit to write this article, I have just returned from my annual priest retreat. I went to the retreat house for priests at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Alabama. I am very grateful for the time away. It is wonderful not being connected to technology - having to worry about reading and responding to emails, texts and voicemail! And, of course, any other concerns that normally occur during a day did not have to be on the radar. The weather in AL was perfect: sunny skies, warm (70-80's), and a peaceful breeze. The retreat house chapel and the Shrine chapels are beautiful places to spend quality time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with the Lord in the quiet without distractions; I find it a time of restoration and rejuvenation. Allowing the Lord to fill the soul with His goodness is a blessing and a joy. Of course, I kept all of you in my daily prayer and at Mass each day. I have attached some pictures. Corporate America "stole" a word from the Christian tradition. The word is retreat. A retreat in Corporate America is where the team goes away to plan, strategize and bond together so they can work cohesively to be efficient, thereby making the company successful and profitable. A Catholic retreat is about unplugging from the ways of the world and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to our soul. It isn't about strategizing or figuring things out. We go on retreat so the Lord can heal our weary souls and bodies. The retreat allows us the opportunity to know the Lord's Will on a deeper level and, thus, live it humbly and confidently. I believe I did my best to "unplug" and allowed the Lord to speak to my soul! The month of May is extremely busy here at the parish. I have a lot of prayer requests for you. First, please pray for our elementary school and religious education Confirmandi, who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. These young men and women have been preparing for a long time, and our prayers are needed so that their souls will be open to receiving the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. On Saturday, May 11, our second graders will be receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist for the first time. It is a joy to see them receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Their innocence and purity of heart allows the Lord to work so profoundly in their lives. Please pray for all those who will be receiving these mysteries of our faith in the Holy Sacraments of the Catholic Church. Then, on Sunday, May 12, we celebrate Mother's Day. It is a day to thank the Lord for the gift of our mothers who gave us the gift of life. It is also a wonderful day to be grateful to our spiritual Mother, Mary, who continually intercedes for us and helps us draw closer to the heart of Jesus. In fact, the whole month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. Please take time each day to pray a Rosary, or at least a decade or two!

Page 33 Page

Finally, you may notice that one of the panels of the stained glass has been removed from the church. There was an issue with the installation of a couple of the panels. We are in the process of having them fixed and re-installed properly. Know of my prayers for you. And thank you for praying for me while I was on retreat. Fr. Jim Bilot

St. Vincent de Paul Make Time for a Mary Garden

Many thanks to the DC “Palm-Palm Girls” who split, separated and organized all the palms we used in the Palm Sunday liturgies. Pictured right: Joan Medl, Anne Parisot, Lynne Kropik, Patti Mrowka, Gerry Neal and Elizabeth Martin.

Now is the time to step into the “lay of the land” and decide where you should place your new Mary statue! Be aware, that some religious statuaries require a waiting period, of four to six weeks, depending on the vendor. For instance, Wayfair has a tremendous variety of saints, angels, the Holy Family, etc. but some are hand-crafted and, indeed, worth the wait. I can’t wait for the planting of my Mary Garden. I already know that Profusion Zinnias, in yellow, will surround her. Last year’s begonias shot up 18” high. Astounding, when you realize that begonias’ average height is six inches. Divine intervention? Uhhuh. Frankly, choose your favorite flowers and enhance your landscape. I just know that Mary’s presence in the garden will lift your heart every time you see her. You’ll thank me later! Please remember the poor box in the back of church. As always, God bless. ~Mindy Delano

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DEFEND OUR CATHOLIC CHURCH AND MUCH MORE Recent attacks on our faith have left everyone wondering, why? Why is our Church and our faith under seige? Over 250 people were killed on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka; ninety-three of them were from St. Sebastian Church alone. St. Anthony’s Shrine was also hit; the shrine is the most well-known church in Sri Lanka and is the country’s national shrine. In total, over 200 Catholic Christians were killed for their faith; targeted for celebrating their Easter Holy Mass! How did we see the media cover this horrific act? Did you once hear the words “an attack on Catholics” or more likely, “Easter worshipers”? The media could not even bring themselves to say “Catholic church-goers.” Around the world people of faith are being targeted. We hear of Jewish Temples in Pittsburgh and Muslim Mosques in New Zealand; we condemn these attacks on our God-loving brethren, but where is the outcry when these attacks are on Catholic Christians? “Globally, it is well documented that Christians are the most persecuted religious group today. Every month on average, 345 Christians are killed for faith-related reasons, 105 Christian Churches or buildings are burned or attacked and 219 Christians are detained without trial, arrested, sentenced and imprisoned. Now is the time for every country to take concrete steps to protect minority populations, including Christians, and to stop this persecution and slaughter. Every country should protect its religious minorities, and freedom-loving countries must demand nothing less of their neighbors. Talk of human rights and religious freedom rings hollow when people are killed for nothing more than worshipping the one who taught us to love one another. The Knights of Columbus stands in solidarity with our Christian brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka during this time of trial. Terrorist attacks like those on Easter Sunday are the acts of those who reject the sanctity of life, human rights and religious freedom. In addition to our prayers, the Knights of Columbus is sending $100,000 to Cardinal Ranjith in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for his use in the rebuilding and repair of his Christian community in the aftermath of this act of terrorism.” …excerpted from KofC’s statement on Sri Lanka bombings.

In today’s first reading when Peter is confronted by the Sanhedrin to stop teaching in the name of Jesus, he retorted, “We must obey God rather than men.” It is not always comfortable to obey God and do the right thing. It is easier to turn your head and conform, than it is to stand up for what is right and obey God. Remember the old “WWJD” bracelets? Maybe it is time to start asking ourselves again, “What would Jesus do?” As Knights of Columbus we are called to defend our faith, defend our Church, defend our priests, defend life and defend those who are persecuted. It is easier not to be a Knight of Columbus than it is to take up the cross of Jesus and be that Simon of Cyrene that we are called to be. If you are a Catholic man over 17½ years old, you are invited to join Foley Council. Maybe you are an inactive Knight who sees the great things we are doing and would like to become part of the order again. Please call our Membership Director Steve Lentz 313-9495132, or talk to any Foley Knight. There will be future degrees coming up soon.

1 in 5 adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition. What is Stigma? People experiencing mental health conditions often face rejection, bullying and even discrimination. This can make their journey to recovery longer and more difficult. Stigma is when someone, or you yourself, views you in a negative way because you have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as shame that can be felt as a judgement from someone else or a feeling that is internal, something that confuses feeling bad with being bad. Navigating life with a mental health condition can be tough, and the isolation, blame and secrecy that is often encouraged by stigma can create huge challenges to reaching out, getting needed support and living well. Learning how to cope with stigma and how to avoid and address stigma are important for all of us. www.nami.org.
