Chasing Happiness During Lent A keynote speaker, professor Catherine A. Sanderson of University of Amherst, explained there are 10 ways to increase your everyday happiness, based on her book Science of Happiness. I have expanded her “points” to relevant, effective behavior in Lent to become happier, in the long-run, with God. It’s the journey that is the prized possession. You absolutely need a significant journey in order to get the ticket to Heaven. Make little changes in daily routine, such as getting mor e sleep, exercising while listening to Pandora’s free spiritual music, getting out into nature and truly listening to our “friends” in the forest and adding short bursts of devotional time for prayer. Read more books. If r eading isn’t your thing, expand and challenge your mind, i.e. theology or catholic-based recordings… getting wired in with free “Libby” at the Library which has new audible books Lifelong learners remain healthy and experience longevity. Besides, books engage you and make you happy. Find your right fit or match, both personally and professionally. If you love what you do and who you are with, this will create happiness. With professional happiness, comes success, and the subsequent ability to share your blessings with the needy. Be grateful. Keep a daily “gr atitude jour nal.” W rite during that quiet, meditative prayer time. Reference the “ little black book.” Turn back pages in your journal and reflect on your earlier writings. Be grateful for Lent since fasting is making you a “healthier you.”

Smile more –even if you don’t feel like it. This tricks your brain and you escape a dreary mood of unhappiness. God wants everyone to feel joy. Relish simple, everyday moments. Appr eciate life’s small “wonder” moments, such as a sunny day, the swollen buds on trees, shrubs, and perennials, the song of birds. These “free” moments teach us to be grateful, especially during moments of unrest or angst. Perform random acts of kindness. Go out and do something to feed your soul. Take a friend to Adoration, make a pot of soup and share it, skip those fancy lattes and take your newfound cash to a collection box that serves the needy (almsgiving). Kindness will revolve back to you; this is part of God’s plan for you. Spend money on experiences versus things…studies confir m that “experiences” lead to greater happiness and create a “happiness residue” and our perceptions of them get better over time. V isit different churches for Mass, attend a retreat, go to a concert, sign up for a “faith-based” trip. Avoid comparisons. When you compar e, you despair . Things ar e messier than you think. Acceptance is ultimately a desired behavior that God teaches us. Build and maintain close relationships. Value ever yone in your “circle of trust.” Let in new friendships. Let go of ones with discord. Build people up, and never resort to tearing them down. Remember, it’s the simple things that matter most. Direct your own happiness this Lent. It’s a good thing. ~~Mindy Delano
