Things Above from Fr. Bilot The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, who have staffed our schools from their inception, are celebrating their 125th Anniversary as a Religious Congregation in the United States. A part of their festivities is celebrating a Mass at Divine Child in honor of the Religious Sisters who have served at our parish to those who are still serving in our community and in the State of Michigan. At the 12:30 PM Sunday liturgy, we will give thanks to the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters for their legacy of bringing Christ to the faithful. I am most grateful for all the Sisters who have dedicated their lives to the Lord and ministered here at Divine Child. Sr. Cecilia Bondy is the Elementary School Principal, and Sr. Marie Gayda teaches at the fourth-grade level. After the 12:30 PM Mass, there is an Open House at the Convent. You are cordially invited to the festivities! Last weekend, we presented the Archdiocesan initiative for Unleash the Gospel with the "6-Day Challenge." The challenge is to view a 2-3 minute video each day for six days and take a couple of minutes to reflect on what you saw and heard. I believe if each of us engages in this very simple, yet insightful, spiritual exercise, we can make a difference here in Dearborn and beyond! "Our world, our region, and our Church need to hear the message of the Gospel, now more than ever. God is inviting you to join this mission." In order to join the mission, use your smart phone to send a text to 484848 and type in "Gospel." You will receive a link to an email where you fill in your email address and the church--type in and select "Divine Child." You will then receive an email each day. Please be a part of this renewal! It is non-threatening, and it will inspire you to be more confident and proactive in discovering our role in unleashing the Gospel. On November 16, Fr. Matt and I, and members of our pastoral staff, will be at an all-day workshop with many other parishes, where we will receive input from Archbishop Vigneron and the Office of Evangelization to help us implement more facets of Unleash the Gospel during the time of Advent and Christmas. It is the hope of the Archbishop, and us pastors, to help all of us become stronger in our relationship with the Lord and have the ability to reach out to those who have fallen away from the Church and their belief in Jesus Christ. Please pray for a successful gathering. I want to remind everyone of the opportunity to pray at our outdoor Marian Shrine and light a candle. With the oncoming winter, the days and evenings can take on a bleak look. Having a prayer intention and lighting a candle illuminates the cold and dreary landscape and reminds us of God's pervading love, through our Blessed Mother, during the joys, sorrows and troubling times of our lives. Also, with it being cold, many of us shy away from being outdoors. Take some time, bundle up, and go to the Shrine, light a dfdfd

candle, and pray for those who are on your heart! Say a prayer for the leadership in the Church. We need healing. Next weekend, at the 10:00 AM Mass, we have a unique opportunity to witness Mary Schultz, a parishioner, married with children, enter a tertiary with the Dominicans. It is a secular institute where members live out the charisms of St. Dominic. They come together as a community to pray, gather to reflect on the life of St. Dominic, and witness their commitment to the wider community. Please keep Mary and her family in prayer. Blessings, Fr. Jim Bilot

Being Sharers in the Victory In completing the Unleash the Gospel Challenge this past week, we might still have a lingering sense of fear or uncertainty in how the Lord might use each of us as vessels for such a largescale renewal. One thing that is important to consider is that the victory is already assured. When the Archbishop returned to Detroit in January 2009, I came across an article of his that he wrote while he was the Bishop of Oakland, California entitled “10 Rules for handling disagreement like a Christian." The last point that he made is the “Eschatological Rule” which means that it points to our final destiny. Here is what he had to say which speaks directly to us now in this present movement of the Holy Spirit: 10. The Eschatological Rule: “The victory is assured; my job is to run out the clock with style.” Christ is risen – truly, body and soul risen and in glory at the Father’s right. He has conquered sin and death and all the forces that threaten us. Whatever is at stake in our trials or conflicts, the certainty of Christ’s victory is not in doubt. And he promised he would be with us always, until the end of time (cf. Mat. 28:20). He will never leave his Church, and his victory will be ours as long as we abide with him in his Mystical Body. This rule, of course, is not an excuse for giving less than our full effort to spread the Kingdom; that would be a kind of presumption. However, this rule is a call to remember that there is one Savior, and it’s not you or me. Our mission is to serve the Lord in fidelity and hope, and be ready for him to act, for he surely will. Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site (Section 4.10.3 of Unleash the Gospel)

30 October 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,    The U.S. bishops are joining together in a commitment of prayer and reparation leading up to the bishops’ general assembly, where we will be making critical decisions in response to the clergy sexual abuse crisis. With my brother bishops across the nation, I will be dedicating myself to seven days of intensified prayer and fasting, from Monday, November 5, through Sunday, November 11. The intentions for this period of prayer and sacrifice are three-fold:

• For the healing and support of all victims of clergy sexual abuse. • For the conversion and just punishment of perpetrators and concealers of sexual abuse. • For the strength of the bishops to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading our sheep from all harm.

If you feel called to do so, you are welcome to join me in praying for these intentions.    I would also be grateful for any prayers for me and my brother bishops during our general assembly, that we may follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in responding to the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse in the Church.    In sending you this letter, these words of St. Paul come to mind: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal 6:20). It is my solemn duty as Archbishop to assume in prayer the burdens of our wounded Church. Thank you for your willingness to consider praying with me and for me as I join my brother bishops in this nationwide effort of prayer and reparation. Please be assured of my prayers for you, as well. Sincerely yours in Christ, The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit

The clothing drive for SVdP is important since it stocks the SVdP Thrift stores, which in turn, sell at very reasonable prices for customers on a fixed budget. In response to a request to help purchase Halloween candy for neighborhood children, Divine Child made a monetary donation to Sacred Heart Major Seminary: Dear Divine Child Community, Thanks to your generosity, our annual Halloween celebration was a huge success again this year! Over 2,500 of our neighbors turned out to celebrate with us! From the very young to the “young at heart,” all had a great time playing games, high-iving, praying with each other, and sharing laughs. I have attached some pictures to give a glimpse into the joy that was brought to the hearts (and faces) of so many of our wonderful neighbors. There were too many great moments to share in one email, so I hope these pictures help to capture them just a bit. Thank you again for your generosity in making the day, week or even year of so many of our young neighbors and for helping their parents and grandparents experience the joy of seeing them so excited! None of this could be possible without your support. Thank you for sharing your missionary spirit, as Pope Francis so often encourages! Please keep us in prayer, as we do you. Yours in Christ, James Bird, DCHS ‘16 Seminarian, Archdiocese of Detroit

SUPPORTING PRO-LIFE Foley Donates $1,000 to DCHS Pro-Life Club Last week, Foley’s Deputy Grand Knight Ronald Broekman attended a Pro-Life Club Meeting at Divine Child High School. Ronald wears many hats at the council. As our Deputy Grand Knight, Ron is the council’s Program Director and ensures that all the committees meet and plan appropriated events. Ron is also the council’s Life Director and oversees the council’s programs that involve pro-life initiatives. These programs include our Tootsie Roll Drive, Garage Sale, Novena for Life, Special Needs and Ultrasound Initiatives. Ron went to the meeting to deliver a check for $1,000.00. The club will use the money for their scheduled March for Life trip to Washington DC in January. The donated funds from Foley help subsidize the students cost for the bus trip to our nation’s capital. The students join the March for Life with the over 250,000 people who attend every year. This is the fourth year that Foley has supported the club in this way. Foley Knights have different fundraisers throughout the year to enable us to fund our causes. Thanks to the men and families of our council who work hard throughout the year to raise the money. Thanks also to the parish and community who support our council in so many ways. This money was raised from the Parking Lot Sale that was held last June. Many parishioners supported us by donating items, renting a booth in the parking lot or coming out to purchase items. Please look for us again in June 2019 and plan on supporting our next Parking Lot Sale. Are you a Catholic man who would like to join our council? Our next major degree will not be until February 17! This will give you the opportunity to learn on your own about the works of the Knights of Columbus. I encourage you to visit to explore all the programs and benefits that being a Knight offers. There are many videos of Knights working together to do good as well as testimonials of men whose lives have been changed. After you visit the website, call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-9495162 - DO NOT SIGN UP TO BE A KNIGHT ON-LINE! We can answer your questions in a council-specific way, so you have a better idea how our council fits with the Supremes plan. You can always talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council.
