Worship Notes: Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s sermon on the broken body of Christ. Elliot Smith, our pastor for young adults, internship and outreach ministries, hosts today’s worship. Pam McCartney, Clinical Nurse Manager of KMC Infection Prevention and Control, tells the Children’s Story. Randy and Debbie Daniel read the names of those who have died from our congregation in the past year. Jerry Taylor is our minister of worship and music and the organist for today’s service. Donald Huff, our Kettering Praise Orchestra director and the director of bands and instrumental music at Spring Valley Academy, conducts the brass ensemble which is providing the music for today’s service. Seventh-day Adventists practice open communion, believing that it is available to anyone of any faith who professes belief in Jesus Christ and has a desire to be His follower. The decision of what age a child may start receiving communion is left to the preference of the parent. As we gather for worship the Kettering Brass, under the direction of Donald Huff, begins with an arrangement of Hymn No. 334, , by Paul Edwards, an English composer. A setting of is heard next, followed by Jari Villanueva’s setting of Hymn No. Johannes Pachelbel’s famous 108, Jari Villanueva is retired from the United States Air Force where he spent 23 years with The USAF Band in Washington DC. He is considered the country’s foremost expert on military bugle calls, particularly the call of which is sounded at military funerals. Bach’s famous is from his Cantata 147 is a Shaker hymn heard in a setting by James Curnow. He is the composer-in-residence (Emeritus) on the faculty of Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. was written in 1864 and was originally entitled, “A Cloud of Witnesses,” referring to the heroes of faith mentioned by the apostle Paul in Hebrews 11. There were 11 stanzas to the original hymn. In 1906, Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote a tune for these words and published it as “Anon.” He named the tune, “Sine Nomine” which translates “Without A Name.” was originally an organ piece, on the tune we know as the , by the 17thcentury organist of Westminster Abbey, Henry Purcell. It has been arranged for brass ensemble by John Corley, who was a music educator in Boston for many years. is one of the great Charles Wesley hymns sung to the Welsh tune, “Hyfrydol.” In addition to this hymn being a great response to today’s communion service, it is also sung in honor of Peter and Cathy Bath’s thirty-fifth wedding anniversary this coming Monday. This hymn was sung at their wedding. Peter and Cathy served this congregation as senior pastor from 1986-1991. from “The Four Seasons” originally a stringed orchestra piece composed by Antonio Vivaldi, a 16thcentury Italian composer, and it is heard today in an arrangement by Kris Dorsey.
