Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist for today’s service. Donald Huff conducts the Praise Orchestra, with many SVA alumni playing brass and woodwind instruments. As we gather for worship we hear four Christmas carols in settings for band. was written in 1849 by Edmund Sears, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Weston, Massachusetts. The tune was composed in 1850 by his friend, Richard Willis, who trained under Felix Mendelssohn. Today’s arrangement by Larry Kerchner quotes and bits of other familiar holiday themes. The English carol, is another set of words to but the tune has increased in tempo and with many additional ornamental notes. ‘ is generally considered the first Canadian carol, originally written in the Huron Indian language in 1640 and set is a contemporary to an old French tune by a Jesuit priest, Jean de Brebeuf. The setting by Richard Saucedo of the traditional carol best known to us as (Hymn 144) was written in 1899 and speaks of the four geographical locations related to Jesus’ life and ministry – Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee and Calvary. The tune was arranged from an English folk song by Ralph Vaughan Williams. is an Appalachian folk song arranged by Tom Wallace that captures the reverence and awe evoked by Jesus’ birth. is one of the great choral works of the English composer, John Rutter, that speaks of how the world has benefited from Christ coming to earth. Today’s arrangement is by Jay Dawson. is an arrangement by Jeff Simmons that combines

The tune,

and Pachelbel’s famous

(Hymn 136) is a German hymn written sometime during the 14th century. means literally, “In sweet shouting, or jubilation, or joyful noise.”

was inspired by the Biblical narrative of the appearance of the angels to the shepherds in the field, telling them of the birth of Jesus and praising God, saying, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo!”
