The Safety Signal

by Brian Guenterberg

One of the recent additions to our church by the Safety Committee is the deployment of an AED (automated external defibrillator) for our church. An AED is for emergency onsite relief when someone’s heart has stopped beating; the device can save lives when mobile emergency care is not immediately available. Our AED is located in a white cabinet in the narthex near the Deacon’s Room. We have already had cause to use the device in one of our Sabbath School rooms. In case of any emergency, the Kettering EMS should be called first and a responsibly trained person (doctor, nurse, etc.) should administer the AED pads to the thorax of the person in need. Please see the figure. The RED X on the compressor sensor centers on the middle of the sternum. The pads have figures on them to show proper placement. Organizations can go for years without using their AED, it is often like an insurance policy but then the need arises and it is best to be prepared; thankfully, we now are.
