Project Narrative The city our park sitting in has a long history which can trace back to around 256 BC while first having its name of Shang in 340 BC, as a reward to a reformer of a kingdom. In the long term of the ever-changing Chinese feudal dynasties, Shangluo has always played a vital role as a fortress of the communication between north and south of the empire, not only the exchange of commodities but also the fusion of folk custom. Yet with today’s rapid development sweeping the whole country, this small city seems kind of falling behind, making people lost in anxiety, leading to the apathetic towards what they once had in their daily life. Thus there is a need for a museum-like open space which can play the role of cultural presentation to the great extent in order to rebuild the local self-confidence. Besides, different kind of events are free to take place, for what exactly make the space an open one is the growing participation of people. BOXES: The park shifts its role from stage to background. When it comes to folk art, as exhibits, they may have their very exhibition boxes. The existed city wall may also be an item on display. Appearing as landmark structures, these boxes may organize the basic order of the park together with the old city wall. These interpret the topic of the park, telling the history of the city directly as well. BACKGROUND: For daily life, the park act as a background, making every form of the local activities possible to take place while integrating into the surrounding social interactions. Thus the background actually may make up by many various small scale stages for all daily activities of which the essence are performances ranging from individual to collective. Since the folk custom has grown up to routine for centuries, there are more possibilities given by the small stages for the tradition to implement, not only the landmark.

KEY SITES&ROUTES: Some typical folk custom forms are selected and spatialize to key sites and key routes, key sights as well. Key sites are with the city wall conducting the order for the park. Key routes engage in the traffic system, mostly parallel and vertical to the city wall for the site itself once been the orderly cropland. Key sites with the landscape system have the traditional Chinese landscape pattern as its basic landform. 5

As one of the small cities locating in the Qinling Mountains, Shangluo once has played an essential role as traffic hub in the Qin, Han and Tang Dynasty. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, the city indeed is fully sufficient with natural landscape resources. While Most of the natural scenic spots settle along the intercity and interprovincial road, the Lian Lake Park locates in the city center, kind of far away from the extraneous traffic node. The isolation the distinctive geographical situation bringing to the city and similiar tourism attractions has caused the stagnation of development.

The Huagu Opera

The Ceramic Craft

At first a group of people in Shangluo played the Huagu opera in their courtyards surrounded by four sides in order to treat their friends and relatives, whom had come a long way for the hosts’weddings or funerals.

Once a craftsman made a plain and interesting piece of pottery for his interest, which was just something he could live without. As time goes on, the very piece of pottery has witnessed generations of people come and go.

As time flows, the custom comes into being in the region and becomes wildly known as a unique folk art in Shangluo. Thus, the Shangluo Huagu Opera appears as the exactly performances which we are watching on the stage today. witness

Therefore, we are able to appreciate the representative pottery works of various historical backgrounds.

The Regular Activities

The Random Activities

The list on the right are the traditional festivals that every Chinese will celebrate every year of their life.

What a man has gone through in his life makes up his memory.

The commom characteristic of these activities is their regularity and the only direction time marches in.

From a child to a teenager, then an adult becomes older and older. That anything can happen seems to be random, yet a simple restriction maintaining orde is in need for people, not a blank without anything.

Though situated in Xi’an, the area has severe problems with fiooding. The max precipitation intensity has reached 60mm/h for many times, yet the drainage system has become increasingly difficult to repair for the illegal buildings in the village. In order to revive the area, the closed factory has become a creative industry park. As more and more craftsmen and artists set up their studios here, the environment issue is getting more urgent while the isolation is supposed to be broke out. Due to the height difference and the floods, the area has been completely impassible for years. The less human activity, the more desolate the wasteland will become, and the more crowded the village will grow. That’s where the vicious cycle starts.

The main weaknesses of our site are concentrated on the chaos of the water and routes. There remains waste water and floods nowhere to go leading to the poor quality of envitonment, while people from either west or east part of the site are absolutely unavailable to each other, which has caused severe inconvenience for the city life. To rearrange the order of the site, a brand new water and pedestrian system for the area is in badly need. 19

As an open public sapce, the circular field for activities meets people of various ages at different periods of time. Since the upper part of the circular structure can be suspended, the plaza turns out to be more flexible with a pretty good visual permeability. Concerts, exhibitions, open-air movies, parties and other recreational activities are allowed to be held at this certain plaza. Moreover, we are expecting more special activities of different seasons to be performed here, such as some ice sports in winter.

With a strong atmosphere of cultural protection, residential areas around the Garden are mostly low storey buildings. Inside of the Lingering Garden: Our site locates in the west part of the Garden. With pretty unique wilderness, the west part of the Lingering Garden turns out to be totally different with the delicate and compact in the middle part of the Garden. Dominated by the dense groves, buildings are rare, together with bare ground where stones and rocks could be seen.
