SPRING BREAK ‘09 by SA Urban

first year for a spring break pet ban with fines up to $2,000.00.

Akon, Shwayze and other acts are entertaining the rowdy college kids this year at spring break on South Padre Island. More than half a million college students will party there this year. South Padre Island is certainly not shy about their nightlife either. You’ll find live music, fireworks, mariachi bands, drink special and plenty of half naked spring breakers. The weather is warm and perfect for bar hopping. The dress is beachwear casual and there are exotic tropical drinks that you’d normally find in the Caribbean.

This year, students are facing a failing economy where jobs are disappearing daily and warnings are coming from the U.S. government to stay away from Mexico because of increased crime and violence. Even though things may look bleak, students say they are still excited to travel. Why shouldn't they? They have worked hard for this partying vacation. Students and parents are finding a 15 percent drop in airline fares and hotel rooms at popular destinations compared to last year, according to Farecast.com

Spring break, the annual rite of passage when exams are replaced with sandy beaches and cheap drinks, runs from March 16th to March 21st for Texas students. The campuses generally empty out by March 13th leaving only school personnel and a few students and their pets behind. Padre officials expect more beachgoers than usual for spring break and are worried about the safety of pets, especially the most popular beach companion: dogs. This is the

With at least 100,000 college students expected to make their way to the area's beaches every week millions of dollars are spent by major corporations to woo young impressionables into the brand loyalty that they hope will last a lifetime. Businesses already facing a tough recession know that Spring Break is important. Merchants and restaurant owners tell us Spring Break will determine if Port Aransas will have a good year

ECO-STIMULATION DON’T HATE – STIMULATE! by Duane Allen

All of us understand how bad the economy had gotten under the Bush Administration. However, with billions of dollars going towards stimulus packages and government bank bailouts during the first few months of the Obama administration, one has to seriously ask the question: WHERE IS OUR COUNTRY HEADED ECONOMICALLY? It seems that most middle class Americans have been feeling the sting from this economy for years now but all of a sudden our government (I’ll refer to the government as “they”) has awakened, or should I say – they’ve become stimulated, and now they want to provide relief. They want to provide relief immediately or they say our recession will quickly turn to depression. If what “they” say is true then why bailout banks and credit institutions who ran their

businesses so carelessly that we, as taxpayers, must bail them out? Also, if we, the middle class, are footing the majority of the tax burden of this bailout then how is the bailout helping middle class America? It’s not. Since the bailout didn’t help us, then the stimulus package is supposed to help us, right? Nope. At some point they will need to pass a stimulus package designed to help us middle class Americans recover from the current stimulus package. Wouldn’t the economy get a jump start if the government would just give this bailout money to the middle class (since we foot most of the tax burden)? Most of us would be responsible and pay off our debts but even if we were irresponsible and threw our money away at Wal-Mart then we’re still jump starting the economy.

Bush had his laundry list of bad decisions but the tax cuts and rebate check he provided to each of us in 2008 sure came in handy. My final answer: GIVE THE STIMULUS MONEY TO MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA!!

STUDENTS “BREAK” FOR THE BEACH ing rebuild homes destroyed by last summer's flooding.” United Way of America offers five Alternative Spring Breaks each year.

Alternative Spring Breaks are designed to give college and high school students something more meaningful to do during their week off, rather than just spending time at the beach getting drunk having casual encounters or sitting at home catching up on school work. Give it a try next year! Although Mexico is on the States No-No list and all the colleges are strongly suggesting their students stay this side of the border this year, there are plenty of spots to party. There are more than 100,000 high school and college-aged Americans that travel to Mexican resorts to celebrate spring break. Much of the drug violence is happening in border towns, and tourists have generally not been targeted, though or not. "We've had everything in here from students who want to go to Cancun or Florida and a mixture of older students and families wanting to get away," said Karen Brown, Travel agent. “More than sixty students from New York, California, Texas and other states are spending their spring break in Western Indiana with the United Way help-

there have been killings in the big springbreak resorts of Acapulco and Cancun, well away from the border. Some students blame Texas and its border cities. Documented violence shows attacks, killings, and gunfire in public places, not inside the resorts. Sadly innocent people are getting caught up in it. University of Arizona urged its 37,000 students not to go to Mexico. Other universities like Penn State, Notre Dame, the University of Colorado and the University at Buffalo said they made their students aware to the travel warnings.

SUPREME COMPUTERS

Mexico's drug cartels waged a bloody fight among themselves and against government forces, carrying out massacres and dumping beheaded bodies in the streets. More than 6,000 people were killed in drug violence in Mexico last year. 6,000! Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora said in an interview with The Associated Press: "There is no major risk for students coming into Mexico in general terms. It is always important to advise the youngsters to behave." Behave? It's Spring Break! A melee of maturing and raging hormones. Behaving is the last thing anyone has in mind.

San Japan 2008 was, by far, the time of my teen-aged life. San Antonio's anime convention, "San Japan", was really quite something! Dancing, Contests and Pockey all around. Well, 2009 will have its anime convention at Our Lady of the Lake University. Mizuumi Anime Club & San Japan bring "MizuumiCon"! DJ DONNIE DEE SAYS ‘WORDBOOTY’

INTRODUCING DJ DONNIE DEE! By Sherril Metal SAU Reporter

SAU: What was it that made you want to start using the turntables as an instrument? DD: Maybe after 1996 or 1997 when I would watch DMC videos and see other people do it. I know people that were doing it prior to that time period, but I believe around '96. It was themed as a musical instrument. SAU: When did you start thinking that you could use scratching musically in any way you wanted? DD: Dj Qbert came out with a movie called WAVE TWISTERS I believe in 97 or 98 which he produced all with scratching. After that, I was hooked on how to use scratching musically. SAU: What equipment do you use in your studio for productions? DD: 2 technics 1200's, a Pioneer 909, a Kaoass pad and a Serato scratch live. SAU: I know you spin around town a few times a week Donnie, what clubs are you presently spinning at? DD: Revolution room Friday & Saturday nights.

The Studio one Saturday out the month. The Heights every Wednesday.

SAU: Do you still have your radio shows? DD: Saturdays 9-10pm KRTU 91.7fm Super Soul Saturdays Sundays 12-2am KRTU 91.7fm Labkids Radio Monday thru Friday Power 106.7 1212:30pm for the Throwback Lunchbreak! SAU: I know you have traveled a bit, can you tell us what different cities and states you have spun in? DD: New York, N.Y., Chicago, San Angelo, California, Dallas, Houston and Seattle!! SAU: There have been a lot changes in music over the last 20 years, from acid house/hardcore/jungle/d'n'b/nu skool/etc. What do you enjoy playing the most and why? DD: Soul jazz. I believe it's a kind a music where you can learn from, that's why I enjoy playing it. SAU: You are a national DJ champion. For those

out there that are not familiar, what are the DMC's and why it is so important to carry on its grand tradition. DD: The DMC is a global dj competition which basically takes the top djs from the nation, put them on a platform, lets them do their thing, and whoever wins gets shot into superstar status. As of the last couple of years, there's been djs from overseas taking the crown. A dj from the states hasn't won the world finals in a while so I think that's why a lot of people haven't heard too much about it. I believe that's gonna change cause we have a lot of talented djs in the states, so its just a matter of time till we'll get the crown back! Here is DJ Donnie Dee's list of wins: 2001 Texas Regional Finalist 2002 Texas Regional 3rd place Winner 2004 Texas Regional Finalist 2005 USA 3rd Place Champion 2006 Texas Regional 1st Place Champion 2006 USA DMC Finalist

local/unknown producers are financing their own vinyl projects, do you encourage this? DD: Yes I do because who else is gonna believe in you LIKE YOU!! Go for yours! SAU: If someone wants to get a record to you, how can they do so? DD:dee4view@gmail.com Lets get to know the you; Favorite author: DATWON THOMAS Favorite word: WORDBOOTY!! Favorite room in your house: PRACTICE ROOM What's always in your fridge? MILK Favorite comfort food: SALAD Whipped cream or chocolate sauce: Chili Cheese! Is there anything that you always wear? UNDIES! Style icons: None What did you want to be as a kid? A DJ! HONEST ANSWER

SAU: I admire the level of commitment you have. When practicing for the DMC's, how many hours a day do you rehearse? DD: It's more than hours. I rehearse a couple of months to a year.

SAU: And a world class DJ you turned out to be. Thank you so much for spending time with me, our readers are sure to adore you as much as I do. Got any shout outs? DD: The whole KRTU staff, the whole POWER 106.7 staff, Purely Rooted, Trendsetter DJ's, my Mom and Dad and baby Brother!!

"WAR CHILD PRESENTS HEROES" FEBRUARY '09 VARIOUS ARTISTS (ASTRALWERKS)

boldness, reinventing Springsteen's "Atlantic City" as a charging anthem in the spirit of "Born to Run" or "Badlands."

by ♫ Aimée D ♫ SA Urban Reporter

Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O transforms The Ramones "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" with her sour-toned but still ebullient vocals and Peaches sounds mesmerizingly obsessed on The Stooges "Search and Destroy."

Legendary artists like Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder were approached by the producers of "War Child Presents Heroes," a benefit album for children affected by war. They were not asked to contribute tracks. Instead, the producers wrote in the liner notes, "We asked each of the icons to select a classic song from their catalog and to nominate the new artist they most trust to create a unique interpretation of that hand-picked track." The result is an uneven but frequently entertaining -- and occasionally revelatory -album.

Some of the songs, like The Kinks' "Victoria" and Wonder's "Superstition" (as interpreted by The Kooks and Estelle, respectively) are solid, but not different enough from the originals to be noteworthy. Beck shows more imagination, turning Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" into clanking psychedelic-pop. The Hold Steady demonstrated similar

Less successful is Duffy, who counter intuitively turns McCartney's "Live and Let Die" into a murmuring meditation, and Franz Ferdinand, whose take on Blondie's "Call Me" offers little more than flashy, Duran Duran-like posturing. Mike Jones of The Clash plays guitar and sings backing vocals on Lily Allen's halfhearted cover of that band's "Straight to Hell," and Adam Cohen croons his father Leonard Cohen's beautiful "Take This Waltz" in Spanish.

TV On the Radio's interpretation of David Bowie's "Heroes" is a partial success, drawing listeners in with a spooky new texture but ultimately letting them down with a lifeless rhythm track. This collection raises lots of questions. Was Duffy really McCartney's first choice? Isn't Beck a little too experienced to be considered a "new artist"? Since three of the four Ramones are dead, was it original drummer Tommy Ramone, replacement drummer Marky Ramone or someone else who picked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? But hey, it's all for a good cause. And no matter how it was put together, this album did generate some priceless tracks along the way. I think this is a must have for any rock collection purely on the history of the making of it alone. Pick it up and enjoy the diversity!

THE ‘REAL GREEN’

Irish for a Day?

If you're like most people, you turn Irish for a day on March 17th. While chomping on that green bagel or taking a swig of green beer (which, by the way, is an American tradition, not an Irish one), or enjoying a parade of people throwing cabbage, carrots, and green potatoes, I'll bet you sat pondering the legend of the real St. Patrick. No? Well, here's your opportunity anyway. Ireland's famed St. Patrick was actually born in Kilpatrick, Scotland in the year 387. And he wasn't born with the name Patrick; his birth name was Maewyn Succat. The name Patrick was given to him by Pope Celestine much later. Adding to his non-Irish background, his parents were members of a high-ranking Roman family. Much like the land for which he was declared patron saint, the story of St. Patrick's life is riddled with fact and myth. It has been said that the myths about St. Patrick have been so intricately woven into the facts of his life, it's hard to tell where history ends and myth takes over. The real facts are that when he was sixteen, he was captured by the Irish and sold into slavery for six years in Ireland. During this time he learned to speak Celtic and become familiar with Druidism. During his captiv-

MARKETING SALES REPS WANTED

ity he said as many as a hundred prayers every day, and the same amount every night. When he escaped, he became devoted to serving God. He was ordained as a deacon, then a priest, and then a bishop. Pope Celestine sent him on a mission to bring Christianity to Ireland because he missed Ireland so much. The Pope gave him spiritual gifts and relics, and gave him the name "Patercius" which translates to "father of his people". Myths... There are dozens of legends of miracles and magical fights between St. Patrick and the Druids but St. Patrick is known mostly for having driven the snakes from Ireland by standing on a hill and using a wooden staff to chase the snakes into the sea, ridding Ireland of them forever. St. Patrick was highly successful in converting warrior chiefs and princes to Christianity, and he baptized them and their many subjects in the Holy Wells. St. Patrick died on March 17, 493. It's uncertain as to where his body is actually buried; however, his jawbone was preserved in a silver shrine and was a requested item as an aid during childbirth, epileptic fits, and as protection against the Evil Eye. The Chapel of St. Patrick exists today in Glastonbury Abbey.

In this shaky economy-the entertainment industry is still going strong. The Gig Marketing Agency is an Event and Product Support company who is opening the doors to a rewarding career opportunity for a few highly motivating professionals.

‘DUMBEST’ MUSIC ROCK MUSIC IS MAKING YOU DUMB!?? by Joel Baumgartner

Have you ever wondered if the music you listen to is making you smarter or dumber? Well, wait no longer! Recently, Virgil Griffith, a 25-year-old Caltech graduate student, has mapped out the tastes of Facebook users music choices versus their SAT score and the school they go to. Interesting enough, the results are not too far from the scary truth. As an example, the favorite musician of the smartest students was Beethoven, with an average SAT score of 1371. Also on the “smart” end of the scale were Sufjan Stevens (1260), Counting Crows (1247), and Radiohead (1220). And sadly for Lil Wayne, enjoying his music was associated with being the dumbest, with an average SAT score of 889. Griffith did find that he had to adjust his measurements and weigh schools according to how populous they were because small liberal arts colleges were dominating the rankings. For example, Caltech, where Griffith is currently pursuing a doctoral degree, had the highest average SAT score at 1520 and the school’s favorite band was Radiohead — but with only 913 undergrads, it doesn’t weigh as heavily, as say, Texas A&M, with over 35,000 students to count for.

If you do not like where this is going, you can relax. I think the accuracy on this experiment is way off. I do not think they take into account that some people will put whatever to just get ranked better. It also doesn’t take into account whether or not someone likes something, but didn’t list it. I’m sure many of you out there love Beethoven or know the name of the closing track on Radiohead’s The Bends album. But that is neither here nor there.

As for Griffith's own place on the scale, his favorite band is Daft Punk, which didn’t even make it onto the list, and his SAT score was “actually fairly low — 1370 out of 1600.”I’m actually a little embarrassed by it,” he wrote in an email message to The Wall Street Journal, though he then noted, “My GRE was a very acceptable 1490 out of 1600.” And what bands are on the list that he likes? “I actually like Tool a lot, and I see Tool is one of the dumber ones on my list. That’s pretty charming.” This just goes to show that music has little to no influence on your intelligence. Although they say playing Mozart to a child during pregnancy increases its IQ, I’m sure the lyrical prowess of Biggie Smalls from the early to mid-nineties would do just the same. Complex lyrics and a phat ass beat can stimulate the mind and cause you to get creative. Be who you want to be.

APRIL BEGINS A 3 PART SERIES

The Birth, Death and Possible Resurrection of Hip Hop SA Urban writer Joel B., aka the Irate Fat Guy, will be presenting a brave three part series examining and dissecting exactly what happened to Hip Hop. It is sure to make some eyebrows rise and might even piss a few of you off, we will see. Joel says this... "Hip hop is far from being dead. The fact that it exists is a proclamation of its strength and power. However, with the talent pool certainly starting to wash clear of anything hip or fresh, hip-hop is most certainly doing something. It has itself by the throat, strangling itself to death. With no voices shining in the light to illuminate this dark path, hip hop will surely die." You can email Joel your thoughts and opinions at: iratefatguy@sa-urban.com.

ROIDS AND MONEY STEROIDS AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

money and fame.

by Duane Allen

It’s kind of like having a son who you know is selling drugs but as a parent you don’t confront it because you enjoy the money that he’s bringing home. Everyone from the commissioner, the president of the players association, team owners, trainers, doctors, as well as the players should be held responsible. The problem of steroids may not only be at the major league level.

When it comes to Major League Baseball and drug testing, why is the emphasis only on the players who used steroids instead of the management who benefited financially by the players who used them? When Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa were locked in a fierce and exciting homerun battle in 1998, Major League Baseball seemed on top of the world. MLB loved the spotlight. Since then superstars such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens now potentially face jail time for lying under oath about their use of banned substances. Alex Rodriguez's recent confession is filled with contradictions. How can steroids be against the law but an institution like Major League Baseball could allow its players to use steroids without penalty? It is the league itself that is at fault because MLB management allowed illegal activity to occur in exchange for

There are so many minor leaguers and collegiate players who all dream of playing in the big leagues who may be tempted as well.

Hey DeDee! I have an odd question to ask but here it goes... I am in a relationship with a lady, but I find myself wanting to fulfill my lustful needs elsewhere. I know "typical guy", but that's where I'm at and I can't help it. You know a lot of people and I was wondering if you knew a woman that would be interested in casual sex, someone that didn't want strings attached, just what some people call a booty call and understands my situation and lustful needs. I would say this person should be Hispanic, average in size and just wants to have dirty hot sex with me. I think you are very attractive, so someone like you in frame or like your co-host from Juss-Assk. Maybe you could give me some words of your sexy wisdom. I believe if baseball would have taken a stand a long time ago it wouldn’t have this problem and so many players wouldn’t have been tempted to try illegally banned substances. I say start penalizing the teams and the commissioner himself for every person who turns up with a positive test and I say the problem will stop immediately.

Like they say- Q: what’s better than old cat? A: new cat!! My advice to you is this... If you are in a serious relationship with a woman whom you truly love, I would tell you to be honest with her first. Tell her what you want and what your desires are. You never know, she might surprise you! However, if you already tried talking to her or you feel that it is a no win situation, then don’t bring the subject up.

Wouldn't it be nice to be with someone you could truly love, trust and be yourself with and to be able to explore your options and desires together as one? Timing is everything, but I believe there is someone out there for everyone to fulfill all of our wants and needs! ‘Till next time Luv, Dedee B Have a sex question for Dedee B? Lil Wayne's new single, Prom Queen, is the first official single off Lil Wayne’s upcoming rock album, Rebirth. The track is produced by Infamous and Andrew “Drew” Correa. The first thing I have to say is that the music isn't bad. It has a nice, heavy rock sound, with all the necessary parts. However, that being said, you can definitely tell that it’s all programmed. Despite the video having a band (and the actual sound), things are a little too "perfect" sounding. Infamous and Correa could have done better mixing the song. The bass line is way too heavy for a rock song, which is mainly due to the hip-hop influence of both Wayne and Infamous.

The next part you visibly notice is- Autotune. By saying he uses Auto-tune, I mean that he REALLY uses Auto-tune throughout the whole song. I think that is what honestly ruined it for me. I think it’s very apparent at this point that Wayne is afraid to sing. It happens to a lot of artists, and it has become sort of a trend. Kanye, Birdman and Akon- why not Lil Wayne too? But seriously, the Auto-tune effect turns this into something less than desirable. If he had used it only for the chorus, I think it would have been fine.

Next is the lyrical content. Despite relying heavily on an over-used rhyme scheme, its a typical rock song about love. Had Lil Wayne not used the Auto-tune though, it would have made the forced rhyming bearable. It’s a song about a guy who wants a girl who will have nothing to do with him. As the years go by, she realizes that she fucked up. But, Lil ‘Ole Wayne is still singing about her fancy pink panties from years ago. I swear to Christ this song reminds me of some 80’s power ballads. The music video was shot on February 12 and 13, 2009 at Birmingham High School in Los Angeles. Birdman and Slim are confirmed to make appearances in the video. The video was co-directed by Lil Wayne and Dave Meyers. Jonathan Davis, Munky, and Fieldy from Korn played backup instruments in the video which premiered on March 3rd at 12:05am on Jimmy Kimmel Live! All in all, it’s not a bad single. While Auto-tune is no secret (One More Time by Daft Punk, anyone?) its overuse in Prom Queen makes this song a failure. Wayne needs to spend time with a vocal coach and learn to sing if he's going to make good rock music. Even then, his simple lyrics, over use of rhyming and reliance on a famous name (hey, why else would Korn be in the video?) might just make this a bearable façade.

During his captiv-

ity he said as many as a hundred prayers every day, and the same amount every night.

Sincerely, Lustful Needs Dear Lustful Needs, I feel that many men are in similar situations as you. Many are looking to fulfill their lustful needs with women who have

Staoffmidic Universe by Bennie Tate www.myspace.com/benniejoe

Perhaps you may want to re-examine the situation you are in.

SAU: More and more
