West Hockey Wins Championship By: Jacob Tanguay-Rossi Staff Reporter The Falcons capped off a great hockey season the only way they should have; winning the Division 1 Eccleston championship. On March 18 the Falcons beat Burrillville 3-0 at Brown University to win the first state hockey championship since 2009. “It’s a great experience,” said coach Boyajian of winning the championship, “especially after a bad season last year and a great turnaround.” The Falcons finished the regular season 8-8-2 before kicking off the playoffs by sweeping Coventry in 2 straight games on the way to the championship, beating out the 4 other teams in their division. The Falcons started off the series against Burrillville with a 6-3 thrashing on March 15, followed by a tough loss, 5-4, in the potential clincher leading on the very next day up to the highly anticipated final game on the following Tuesday to win the state hockey championship. Forward Anthony Simeone won the MVP as he had seven points in the series. The scoring started off with West’s Austin Alzate, who scored the first goal of the game in the first period and the Falcons never looked back. Alzate scored another goal in the third to put it out of reach and defenseman Ryan Beliveau sealed the deal with an empty netter to clinch the title. Goalie Anthony Lancelotti stood on his head all game saving 25 shots en route to a shutout. Coach Boyajian on the performance of his players, “They played great, our 2 scoring lines did well and our defensemen were great.”
