Week 1

Mass Vs. Individual defects- conformity

Notes: Links of chains with a brittle or broken chain in the center, the weakest link, group is only strong as the weakest link. Set or dots on a grid, neat and tidy, but one jumps off, or is colored differently. Artificial heart valve or heart warmth cold / artificial Drugs/ pill / Promiscuity Sex / Control / Levels/caste system/ Individuality / exile/abandonment

The scene is set in the future, which is called the World State. There are two types of people. One group lives in certain areas of Europe and the United States, which are called the World State. The other groups are just regular people who live like us, currently blocked off and restricted from the World State. The World state is a perfect society. There are tightly controlled and also has a five caste system. The higher group, called Alphas do all of the intellectual work required in the World State. The Epsilons do all the labor intensive work required by the World State. All the citizens of the World States are clones of one male and one female. Each caste is treated before and after birth so they would fit perfectly into the perfect World State society. For example, the Alphas are treated well, they get the best education, and they are treated like royalty. The caste systems below them on the other hand are treated much worse. The castes below are treated with hazardous chemicals at birth and they are also deprived of oxygen so they would develop less intellectually compare to the Alphas. All caste are brainwashed after birth until they are much older, the Alphas feel much better about their work, and the lower caste also do not hesitate about the labor intensive works give to them. In this society, they are discouraged to be individuals. Sexual promiscuity is also encouraged, and because they are all clones of one person, there is no mother or father, to them, sexuality is free and open, and have just one partner is an embarrassment. The thought of parents are almost pornographic in their world. The book reveals the advancement of technology and how it has affected everyone’s lives. Everyone is exactly the same except one person. One alpha named Bernard has trouble fitting in. He was born with a defect and he thinks and acts differently. He is shy and he is also a loner. He does not conform to society. Everything in the World State is supposed to be fun and easy. There is no stress there and everyone is encouraged to take pills, a drug like THC called Soma. Everyone escapes reality and they try to live happily. Technology has really changed the way they live. They even have a cinema with more than just visual and audio, it also has the sense of taste and smell. Everybody enjoys themselves in the World State except Bernard. The book also introduces a Character name John. He is an outsider to the people in the World State. He lives outside of the world state and he conforms to the more hectic and crazy world. Throughout the book, he is referred to as the savage. He feels that the people in the World state are not normal. He thinks they are way too promiscuous; there is no self, and there is no individuality. He starts to realize they use technology and science to escape reality. They escape any kind of stress and emotions by being out there living their lives without any censorship. John ends up killing himself because he cannot handle the World State.

Week 2

Notes: By the end of class, we had to choose 3 iterations. Katie helped me choose the gears for the glitch in the system and the ants for conformity, and the heart. I sort of wanted to pick the rose, but because some were in bloom and some were not, it did not convey conformiy vs. unconformity but it focused more about the growth and progression of the individual.

Notes: I decided to ditch the heart idea and wanted to persue the ants and the gears. The idea of ants conforming and the glitch in the system read pretty well.

Poster / Type Treatment

Notes: I was very fond of digirtal type and was hesitant about doing this but creating my own type added another dimension. I used honey, cocoa powder, ketchup, and pepper. I wanted to use food materials so I can incoporate the type as image.

26

I tried many different mediums for this one but the honey worked the best. The cocoa powder, and the pepper were okay but they just served as boring type, whereas the honey showed more characteristics

Poster / Type Treatment

Notes: I wanted to use some metal for the gears poster so I used so really cool magnetic balls to create letter forms. I even took some tin foil and used that; it created a nice shiny texture. The wire was the easisest to work with because it was very malleable. The funny thing is, I misspelled the word “world and I did not even notice until the second variation of the poster.

30

Lauren thought the gears were not metallic enough for the first variation and I was on a mission to find real gears. After many trips to different office depot, I decided to photoshop better looking gears.

Week 5

To Be Or Not To Be 12/30/2012

Wed. 3:45 P.M. Everyone conforms to the world state. Everyone but one person. One alpha named Bernard has trouble fitting in. He holds unorthodox beliefs about sexual relationships, sports, and community events. His insecurity about his size and status makes him discontented with the World State. The world in which he sees through his own eyes seem unfit. Bernard’s discontent stems from his frustrated desire to fit into his own society, rather than from a systematic or philosophical criticism of it. When threatened, Bernard can be petty and cruel. He struggles to fit in within his own kind, but he ultimately finds peace in isolation.
