FROM THE FOUNDATION While I was happy and proud to serve as the 2017 chairman of the Board of Directors for the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation, I was even more proud of what we were able to accomplish this past year because of you. It is the individuals, companies and foundations listed on the pages of this annual report that made it all happen. Donations to the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation are used to provide equipment, education, improved and new facilities and new programs – all to strengthen the mission of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and its hospital campuses and clinics.
we celebrated the successful transition of the Level II Trauma Center from the Memorial Campus to the Shoreline campus. Several generous donors and the supporters of two of our flagship events (Lyceum and the Richard King III Grand Classic) helped bring these projects to life.
By the end of 2017, your gifts helped us get closer to completing the $335 million Master Facility Plan project with several of its components already in place. The new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center opened its doors and is named in honor of longtime community champion, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a man who gave medical care to residents no matter their status or income. The A9 Trauma StepDown Unit and Medical Surgical Services Unit on the 9th Floor of the Critical Care Tower opened at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline. Additionally,
Throughout this report, you will see photos and descriptions of various other projects that received funding in 2017. Your gifts made it happen and we cannot thank you enough. Everyone on the Foundation Board and the Foundation team joins me in sincerely thanking you for your continued support and generosity. Thank you for making a difference for our South Texas community, for believing in CHRISTUS Spohn and for strengthening our mission with your generous gifts.
We are thankful for the collective impact of our 2017 donors, which enables us to continue the transformation of our facilities creating a state-of-the-art environment for doctors, nurses and technicians and providing an exceptional experience for our patients. It is gratifying to think about all the different ways in which donors’ dollars supported the care provided across the CHRISTUS Spohn region including innovative programs and services, such as offering patients transitional resources and counseling at the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center to ensure that they continue their care plan and improve their health.
our South Texas community and it is our honor to recognize your heartfelt gifts.
Nancy Beauchamp, Chairwoman, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation Board of Directors 2017
Spohn’s mission, calls on the exceptional talents of many men and women from so many different walks of life. It is the same mission that the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word San Antonio and Houston shared for more than a century. It is because of our generous donors that CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, our campuses and clinics can remain faithful to that same mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all including the poor, vulnerable, and those most in need of God’s love and healing. Thank you for keeping our mission on course. Our mission truly depends on the generosity and giving spirit of the residents of

Three new state-of-the-art operating suites were also opened at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline which includes the very latest in imaging technology, video monitors, high-tech lighting and more. While I hope you never have to be in these rooms, all of the South Texas residents who do, will be better off because of them and your gifts. These operating suites represent the latest and most sophisticated design and technology for our highly-trained surgical teams, so our patients can be confident they are receiving world-class care close to home.
Karen Bonner, Vice President for Philanthropy, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation
This report shines a light on you, our donors, who have supported the CHRISTUS Spohn ministries. It celebrates and shows our deep appreciation for every contribution made through individual donors, corporate gifts, event organizers and participants, granting foundations, memorial gifts and tributes in honor of loved ones or clinical team members. The combined impact of these gifts and the lives touched are immeasurable.
I hope you will find the stories in this report about the community of contributors we rely upon, inspiring and humbling. We are so grateful for the dedication of supporters like you who continue to help us serve our community. Because of you, we’re able to provide the kind of extraordinary care that you, and our entire region, deserves.
H-E-B Partnering in
Health
H-E-B and CHRISTUS Spohn both began their journeys to help their communities in 1905. For over 112 years, H-E-B has contributed to worthy causes throughout Texas and Mexico. As the Butt family expanded their business in Texas, they also increased their personal investments by giving back to communities across Texas. Their similar vision of taking care of all of their residents in the community made H-E-B a charitable partner for CHRISTUS Spohn.
H-E-B Public Affairs Senior Manager, Regina Garcia, stated, “Back in 1905, Mrs. Florence Butt started H-E-B with nothing other than $60 and a prayer. From the very beginning however, her mission was to give back to the community and we’ve been doing that ever since. H-E-B’s mission statement is to build the world’s Rob Hall H-E-B Group VP/GM greatest retailing company, so of the Gulf Coast Region that we can make lives better for our partners, customers and our communities, because each and every person counts. It’s important to us to make sure that our partners are taken care of and that their families are taken care of as well. If we have partners who are healthy, they are more productive in the workplace and that makes them great resources for us within our company. So we were eager to provide them with the best health care possible. Because the mission of Spohn aligns with our mission, we knew that as a community we all needed to get behind CHRISTUS Spohn’s efforts because
Mr. and Mrs. Butt, Sr.
it provides quality health care for everyone and does not discriminate by any means.” Over the years, H-E-B has made several gifts to CHRISTUS Spohn. In 2017, however, they decided to make an exceptional donation of $2 million designated to the H-E-B Education Center at the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center and to the H-E-B Dining Room in the new Tower at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline that will open in 2019. “We decided to give to the Education Center because we didn’t want to lose focus on the advancements that were taking place in an area of concern for the community and we wanted to be sure that we could provide an avenue where our community could learn how to better take care of themselves. At the same time physicians and residents could have a place where they can have a learning environment where they will gain knowledge, skills and tools to deliver high quality care to patients. As for the dining room at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline, we know that when people think H-E-B, they usually think food, so we appreciated being given that naming opportunity for our gift.” As with other gifts that H-E-B has given to Spohn, their donation toward Our PATH Forward will help Spohn provide world-class care to those in our community. 3
ELINOR AND BEN DONNELL
Supporters
Dedicated of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System The desire to serve others and stay involved in the South Texas community is an integral part of Elinor and Ben Donnell’s life. For over 30 years, Elinor and Ben Donnell have been a significant part of the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. Ben witnessed the hospital’s tremendous growth firsthand while serving on the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Board. He saw the acquisition of the Kleberg and Beeville hospitals in 1985, the opening of CHRISTUS Spohn Alice campus in 1999 and the construction of South that was built to address the needs of the growing south-side of Corpus Christi. Recently, Ben and Elinor generously donated to Our PATH Forward to support the multimillion dollar project that helped construct and open the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center and the progression of the Shoreline expansion. With Ben’s involvement on the board, Elinor then became more involved as well serving on the Foundation Board for nine years and now as an Emeritus Director. Mrs. Donnell, along with 21 other charter members in Corpus Christi, agreed to support an Ambassadors program to help foster communication and understanding of the services and health care provided by CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and advise the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation on community issues and concerns. Elinor also served as chairwoman for multiple Lyceum events. “From an events standpoint, I have definitely enjoyed the
4
Lyceums. The Lyceums were started because we wanted to bring something to Corpus Christi that we didn’t already have, and what we didn’t have were outside speakers of great caliber and that’s what the Lyceum continues to bring. I think most of the Lyceums have been just incredible and a tremendous asset not only to the benefit of the public but they have Ben and Elinor Donnell also benefitted Spohn financially,” said Mrs. Donnell. The Donnell’s belief in lifesaving work provided at CHRISTUS Spohn goes beyond their longtime connection to the Corpus Christi community and into their own family’s personal experiences as well. Ben states, “All of our children were born at CHRISTUS Spohn. Elinor has been a patient there, I have been treated there so it’s just part of our life. It’s hard for us to think of a life without Spohn.” The Donnell’s have been steadfast in their support of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital and its growth. The investment makes sense, as Ben reflects, “I like the contributions that Spohn has made to the community; they’re sort of immeasurable. Spohn has always tried to meet the community’s needs. It’s always been a premier hospital, it’s always been where we’ve been treated and where we’ve recommended people to be treated.” We are grateful to the Donnell family for their active involvement with the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and Foundation Board and in the community they serve. Their contributions of time and treasure, along with their vocal advocacy for the hospital, are sincerely appreciated.
THE LARRY AND PAT MCNEIL FOUNDATION Doing the Right Thing for Family, Friends and the Larry and Pat McNeil
The McNeil family have been steadfast supporters of CHRISTUS Spohn for many years, supporting CHRISTUS Spohn projects through the family foundation that was founded by Larry and Pat McNeil, who strongly believed, “the more we give, the more we receive.”
The Larry and Pat McNeil Foundation was established in 1979 to provide financial assistance for the benefit of charitable, scientific, artistic, literary, healthcare and educational organizations in the Texas Coastal Bend Area. After Larry passed away in 2004 at the age of 82, Pat and their two children, Dr. Mike McNeil and Sue McNeil Carey, were determined to continue the legacy that Larry and Pat had begun. “80% of the charities to which we continue to donate are those that were originally selected by my parents, which includes CHRISTUS Spohn,” said Mike McNeil. In May of 2015 when the opportunity presented itself to donate to the new Critical Care Tower at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline, Mike and Sue did not hesitate to make the generous donation of $250,000 toward Our PATH Forward. Just two weeks later, Sue McNeil Carey, her husband, Ralph, and their daughter, Michelle Charba, along with her husband, Randy, and their son Will, as well as friends, Laura McComb and her children, Andrew and Leighton, were all lost during the Memorial Day Wimberley flood. “Maybe a month or two after the flood”, Mike recalls, “I thought about designating the McNeil Foundation’s pledge to the Trauma Operating Room and make it in honor of those we lost in the Wimberley flood.” The new trauma operating room
Community
will be named The Carey, Charba, McComb Memorial Trauma Operating Room. At Mike’s suggestion, Karen Bonner, Vice President of Philanthropy for the Spohn Foundation, set up a matching fund to encourage donations to CHRISTUS Spohn to support the memorial fund. Through their generous gifts, friends of the McNeils, Careys, Charbas and McCombs have continued that spirit of service and have donated to the Carey, Charba, McComb Memorial Trauma Operating Room fund. Over 49 donors have given gifts to the fund totaling more than $600,000 with numbers continuing to rise. One passionate donor, Lynn Giddings, a close friend of Sue Carey, was among the first to take the match challenge to heart. Lynn states, “If you met Sue Carey one time, then you were a friend of hers for life which is why I decided to step forward with a gift and assist in asking others to support the fund as well.” Mike says, “We are honored and truly grateful for the generous philanthropic support Mike and Julie McNeil of everyone who wanted to create a fitting tribute to those lost in the Wimberley flood.” All of us at CHRISTUS Spohn are grateful to the Larry and Pat McNeil Foundation and Dr. Mike McNeil, along with his wife, Julie, for sharing their time, talent and treasure with us and for their long-standing financial support to ensure that our community receives the highest quality care. Truly a legacy of caring for our community has been established for generations to follow. We recognize and applaud their extraordinary philanthropic support and generosity. They are an inspiration to us all.

TOM CARLISLE Generations of
Gratitude
In 2016, Carlisle committed to supporting Our PATH Forward. “This new project is the asset that CHRISTUS Spohn is giving this town to build an institution that is top rate. In my opinion, it’s probably one of the most uplifting things. My father used to always say, ‘Always keep God as your partner, that’s your main partner.’ With the construction of this new building, Spohn shows that they have God as their main partner.” His quote rests right at the heart of CHRISTUS Spohn’s vision of being a leader, a partner and an advocate in bringing innovative health and wellness solutions that improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God’s healing presence and love.
Tom Carlisle Growing up in the small town of Alice, Texas, third generation Tom Carlisle was raised with the values of honesty, integrity, hard work and giving to those in need. “I learned to give back from my father, Cecil Carlisle, he always truly believed in giving back to the community and to local charities.” Tom has proudly carried on the tradition of giving back to his community by supporting multiple institutions such as the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Catholic Charities and CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. Tom recalls, “As a child, Spohn was the only institution I knew of and went to for emergencies. It just made sense to continue supporting CHRISTUS Spohn, and even more so now with the most recent expansion of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline.”
6
Tom’s commitment to the hospital’s mission extends beyond his financial support. For numerous years, Tom has both served on and chaired the annual CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation Lyceum Committee. In 2011 and 2012, he offered his leadership and guidance as chair for two of the record attending Lyceums where Former President, George W. Bush and Former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair were special guests. In addition, Tom served on the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation Board for nine years and serves now as an Emeritus Director. “I got involved on the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation Board through Alan Stoner (longtime CHRISTUS Spohn supporter) when he was chairman of the Foundation.” Tom willingly shares his business expertise on the Finance, Investment and Audit Committee at CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation. Tom’s gifts of time, treasure and expertise help complement his legacy of service and support for CHRISTUS Spohn Health System – ensuring that the hospital is ready to meet the needs of the community for future generations.

SPECIAL THANKS TO 2017 DONORS
Giving From Within
The best and most generous people anywhere work at CHRISTUS Spohn. They are dedicated to the patients we are privileged to serve and many selflessly give back to CHRISTUS Spohn through the GIVING FROM WITHIN associate campaign, raising almost a million dollars. Associates can choose an area to support that is meaningful to them such as The Sister Margaret Mannion Helping Hands Fund, Cancer Care or projects on their hospital campus.

CHRISTUS Spohn Kieschnick Guest House Home Away from
Home
Imagine having a loved one be admitted to the hospital for an illness or any other emergency while simultaneously losing your home and all of your belongings.
with a social worker who was rounding. The social worker then informed her about the Kieschnick Guest House, what they offered and where it was located.
On August 26, 2017, Rockport resident, Carol Runyan, made the difficult decision to abide by the mandatory evacuation notice and fled to safety in Kingsville to stay with a friend before Hurricane Harvey hit. Like many other residents in the Coastal Bend, Mr. Runyan stayed.
Once Mr. Runyan drifted off to sleep, Mrs. Runyan made her way to the guest house and booked a room. She could not be happier and more relieved to have found an affordable place where she could feel safe and where she could be assured that if an emergency were to happen to her husband, she would only be a short walk away.
Two days after the storm, Mrs. Runyan’s friend drove her back to Rockport to be reunited with her husband. What she saw still brings tears to her eyes.
“The Kieschnick Guest House is truly a blessing. You can just feel God’s love in this house”, says Mrs. Runyan about staying in the guest house. “Everyone I have met here at the Kieschnick House has been friendly. From the staff to the guests, everyone I’ve encountered has brought support during this rough time. We all have different problems, but we’re all suffering in some way.”
“I walked in to the now flooded living room and just saw him sitting there on his recliner. Just like before, he didn’t talk or move. I called the police to see what I could do since I had heard that it’s illegal to force someone to go to a hospital but the officer assured me that this was an exception. An ambulance was sent right away.” Once at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline, the doctor let Mrs. Runyan know that her husband had severe sepsis, a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. During the storm, Mr. Runyan received a cut on one of his legs from a piece of metal that flew off their mobile home. Due to prolonged exposure in flood water, the cut became infected sending the infection through his bloodstream later causing kidney failure and an abrupt change in mental status. Doctors immediately placed him on the list to have his leg amputated from the knee down to prevent the infection from spreading even more. While these medical decisions were being made, Mrs. Runyan commuted to and from Kingsville since she could only afford staying at a hotel for two nights. Fortunately, one day while she visited her husband, Mrs. Runyan shared her story

When a family member becomes seriously ill, or suffers an experience like the Runyan family did, the whole family suffers. A loved one’s illness draws families together and the need to be close is great. An extended stay in a hospital far away means a warm home is often replaced by hospital corridors or an impersonal hotel room. For 31 years, the Kieschnick Guest House has helped over 500 individuals and families per year from outside the Corpus Christi area stay close to their loved ones during a long-term hospital stay. The Kieschnick Guest House provides families of loved ones receiving care at CHRISTUS Spohn a home-away-from-home where they may have a comfortable bed, convenient laundry facilities, and a family room for relaxation. Families staying at the Kieschnick Guest House are asked to make a minimum $25 donation per night to help defray the costs of day-to-day operations. These revenues are not sufficient to maintain the house. Will you please take a moment to help us keep the Kieschnick House operational so that we can continue to give comfort to those in need? Every dollar you contribute will go to update, furnish and maintain the CHRISTUS Spohn Kieschnick Guest House. Your generosity toward the Kieschnick Guest House will help: • Upgrade bedrooms to better provide a safe, comfortable room for families that stay. • Maintain and upgrade amenities essential for providing a real home for our guests. • Buy new heating and air conditioning units to keep guests warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
A GIFT IN HONOR OR MEMORY The Spohn Kieschnick Guest House invites you to continue to make our house a home. The need for your support is great. Plaques will be proudly displayed in the Guest House with the names of all donors. Every dollar contributed will go to CHRISTUS Spohn Kieschnick Guest House maintenance and furnishings such as linens and towels. Home is where the heart is – please give from your heart.

Portrait of Otto Kieschnick, Bishop area pioneer, with his eldest grandchild and mother of Dick Rathgeber, Esther Kieschnick Rathgeber.
On July 16, 1986, the Spohn Kieschnick Guest House officially opened its doors. The project is successful largely due to a generous donation by Austin businessman, Mr. Dick Rathgeber. The Spohn Kieschnick Guest House is a memorial to the legacy of Mr. Rathgeber’s great-grandfather, the late Otto Kieschnick, who began farming in Bishop in 1905 – the same year Spohn Hospital’s “Mission of Caring” began.

Ways To Give
Your Guide to Giving Why is your support important? From its humble beginnings in 1905 as Spohn Sanitarium on Corpus Christi’s North Beach, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System has emerged as the healthcare leader in South Texas. Today, our physicians, nurses and specialists continue the legacy established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and Dr. Arthur E. Spohn by providing the most advanced, compassionate care for our entire community. While healthcare has changed during our more than a century of serving the Coastal Bend, our commitment to extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ remains resolute to the heart of our mission in our 12-county service area. The CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation relies upon the support of our generous benefactors to help us continue to meet the expectations of individuals who look to us for the best in medical care for themselves and their families. The Foundation raises funds that provide equipment, education, improved and new facilities and new programs in our South Texas area of care. We are a 501(c) (3) nonprofit. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
