YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO NEWPORT! Oioi Newport Newbies, Mista Ifsta here, the owner / runner / manager / general fella about town that I’m sure you’ll be seeing a lot of over the next few years. I’m introducing myself this way because it’s a damn sight easier than shaking 5000 hands the next time you see me standing on one of the doors at one of my venues in the city centre. Although, if you do fancy shaking it and saying hi, pop down with your friends and make it official… I’ll be the one with the hat on. Which incidentally, isn’t covering a bald spot, it’s a full Brazilian head job

to keep me cool in the venues. Just thought I’d clear that up before anyone starts shouting ‘slap head’. Speaking of hats…uhm, no hats in the clubs with peaks. I’m the exception. It also keeps me warm when I’m dotting in between clubs. Honest. I’ve been running clubs and live music venues in Newport for around 15 years now, and things here have just got better and better. Sure, along the way clubs have opened and closed, but the Newport party spirit is still burning brightly, outshining many of the big cities for sheer cool kudos and big party atmosphere. That’s

what I’ve always strived for; happy, friendly, safe venues with the emphasis on good music, amazing drinks offers and quality club nights. Anything that leaves you knackered, but smiling…you know what I’m on about! Clean minds please people… ;) It’s my love of all things musical that made me feel like I had to step in and prop up the Newport scene back in the day, when it seemed to be headed in one direction. Variety is now the spice of Newport life, and we have everything on offer from alternative indie, rock, dubstep, disco, funk, R&B, hip hop, ska, reggae, drum n bass…The list is too long to mention everything, but you name it, we’ve got a spot for it, in one of our many venues around the city. I love music and I’m passionate about live music in particular. There’s something for everyone here. I’ve just got back from Bestival, and it’s got me excited about bringing some more big names to the Newport stage. DJ Yoda for example will soon be here and already promises to be one of the best nights of the year. To sum out this brief guide to a good night out in Newport, my ethos has always been to keep everyone happy and everyone safe, providing the friendliest, coolest venues in the whole of the city. My door policy across the board has always been fairly strict, with Meze Lounge (now in its tenth year) being the standard by which all are set. Its doors are open to students and regulars, friends of

regulars, members and just nice, decent people. If you’re one of those, then no problem. If you’re a trouble maker or someone with ‘bladitude’ then forget it. Our doorstaff are true professionals, but top guys and become well known friendly faces about town. I wouldn’t want anything but the best here. These are your places and I want you to come away with smiles on your faces (there’s that cheeky innuendo again.) ‘Get involved’ is the mantra for the 2012 / 2013 club season, and my venues are no exception. I really want you to see these places as yours to use for your courses, art projects and anything else you can dream up. We have exhibition space, we’ve run successful art auctions, film and photography workshops, charity nights… all run by students and regulars. If you get involved then you’ll get more back. These aren’t just night clubs, they’re creative hubs for musicians, artists, poets, dancers, film makers and photographers. Just contact us if you’ve got an idea. We’d love to hear it! Whether it’s Fatboy slim looking for a DJ partner or the World DJ championships giving him the call to work for them, DJ YODA is one of the UK’s biggest party starters and is as comfortable firing up the decks in front of a crowd of several thousand at Glastonbury or Bestival mashing up dubstep and jazz beats, or rocking a basement in his home in East London with some heavy urban sounds. Grabbing influences as wide as his family’s old vinyl, from old school raved up drum and bass, from the East London pirate radio stations, through to watching his heroes, The WU Tang Clan at Notting hill Carnival. With everything, from his seminal mixtapes to his live shows, DJ Yoda gives a taste of his ‘tongue in cheek’ style. Mashing sounds from the Muppets song to bass rattling dub and the Indiana Jones theme, to booty shakin’ breaks, his shows and DJ sets have always been peppered with TV and Film samples. Now, taking his skills and technology further, DJ Yoda can be found in full 3D! Mixing and cutting video and beats together with his huge audio visual DJ sets, as the man himself explains:

“I’m DJing but with video as well as audio. Most of my video material is sampled from YouTube - it can be anything from clips of my favourite movies and TV shows, to funny viral clips, old commercials or cartoons, ‘80s wrestling, ‘30s jazz films and even some bespoke animation. Then I scratch and mix it all in time with the music.”

Despite the technical tricks, you’ll find DJ Yoda behind the decks keeping things real, with an old school set of Technics turntables, scratching alongside a full brass band with his link ups of a Siberian Marching band that he’s taken around the UK festivals! DJ YODA is taking his magical cinema show on the road with THE CHOP SUEY Tour this Winter. Expect more of Yoda’s Ninja like skills on the decks as he mashes his way through hip hop to house in his own World Famous style.

HOW TO MAKE A

Rasberry Mojito is renowned for its mojito menu, and some of the finest cocktails in Newport, we had a quick chat with their ocktail kings and queens for some tips on making the perfectly simple raspberry mojito.

Ingredients • 2oz Rum • 1oz Chambord • 1oz Lime Juice

• Ice • 1½oz Mint and Raspberry Syrup

• Club soda • Fresh Raspberries

Method

How to make a simply syrup:

1. Heat up 1 cup of water in a saucepan, when boiling, add 1 cup of sugar and stir ‘til dissolved.

Remove the saucepan from the heat, crush a handful of raspberries and add about 15 mint leaves and let them steep.

Allow the simple syrup to cool. Remember, the longer it steeps, the more flavour your mojito will have.

While you’re waiting for the simple syrup to steep and cool, squeeze the fresh limes in your glasses (do not use bottled lime juice). Place a few mint leaves in the bottom of each glass and use a fork muddle the leaves. When you’re ready to serve, fill the glass about half way up each glass. Add your favourite rum and chambord and pour over your cool simple syrup to about half-way. Add a dash of club soda, stir and finally top with fresh raspberries and mint leaves.

Taking the UK rock scene by storm and demand attention.

ONIC BOOM SIX are an explosive and outspoken five-piece rock band from Manchester, described by Kerrang! as “taking ska, pop, grime, dubstep, punk and metal apart, then rebuilding them as a hyperactive hybrid”. With a live show known for “clashing activism and good times”, SB6 play firmly for the dance-floor while retaining enough power and aggression to be an active fixture of the UK’s rock scene. The Boom’s influences include; The Specials, The Streets, and Public Enemy and the band signed with Xtra Mile Recordings in early 2012, who will release their self-titled album ‘Sonic Boom Six’ on October 17th 2012. Growing from playing house parties and squats between London and Manchester to huge tours supporting the bands hero’s, such as; Less than Jake, Real Big Fish and the Mad Caddies, the band became frustrated by the lack of support from the record companies. The band broke off to start their own REBEL ALLIANCE records. Something that they could take control of, their own destiny.

Having toured the UK, Europe, the US and Japan constantly for the last six years, (while also managing to release three albums on their own label) the band took time out in 2011 to write the ‘Sonic Boom Six’ album and recorded it with Peter Miles (The King Blues, Futures, We Are The Ocean). The release of the infectious first single ‘For The Kids of The Multiculture’ gained SB6 a new audience and made them industry champions, being playlisted on national and regional radio and TV, gaining ‘Single Of The Week’ on Kerrang! Radio. 2011 summer headline slots at Sonisphere and Hevy cemented their standing as one of the UK’s great live acts. After storming shows at HMV’s Next Big Thing and Brighton’s Great Escape festivals, SB6 spent early 2012 talking to several record labels to find the right partnership for the album’s release. SONIC BOOM SIX announced the release of the superb, perception-challenging, self-titled new album on their brand new label, Xtra Mile Recordings, available October 15th. The band have also just announced a month-long November headline tour, starting on November the 2nd in Nottingham and ending on November 24th at Meze Newport. The next single from the album will be ‘Virus’, released September 17th. We’re expecting nothing less than a RIOT at Meze in November!
