www.lazardesignbuild.com There is a rather famous house that rests at the corner of Hermosa Avenue and 30th in Hermosa Beach. Locals call it the “Lifeguard Tower” for an obvious reason: its three stacked trapezoidal structures, narrowing at a lookout tower room at the top, resemble the iconic structure that hosts the watchers of our beaches day in and day out. The 3,400-square-foot contemporary put Steve Lazar on the map in 2009—but since then, the surfer/craftsman/design-build believer has continued to create some of the South Bay’s most memorable dwellings. His latest project, 2052 Manhattan Avenue, may be the next one destined for the history books. He recently shared his thoughts on this project and others with me. Here is an excerpt of our conversation: Jan Horn: How would you describe your design aesthetic? Steve Lazar: It’s an equal format between function and fashion. A great example of this is the entryway at 2052 Manhattan Avenue. The base has a water feature and a three-story atrium that is visually prominent on every floor. It is also the means by which you get into the house. You have this beautiful aesthetic feature with a bridge into the house. JH: What is the most important factor when designing a beach house after views and natural light? SL: To be able to combine a sense of openness while still maintaining a sense of openness and individual spaces. JH: Where do you draw inspiration from? SL: A lot of it depends on the location, and its surrounding vistas and opportunities. You need to look at what is around you, and use that as a palette. JH: What are your most memorable projects to date? SL: It’s always my most current one—because all of the things I learn from it. I’m also excited about the project that has yet to come—because I’m looking forward to trying something new with the experience I’ve gained over the years. My work is very dynamic. I have no recipe for new buildings. The Lifeguard Tower was a good example of that. That was an opportunity to do something really avant-garde. JH: Why do you think that project has stuck in people’s memories? SL: Because it was truly an original. JH: I am always curious about this—do you have a maxim or motto you design by?
