Preface

Why poetry matters in business

In business today, we increasingly communicate and collaborate across organizational, cultural and language barriers. The key here is to stay close to ourselves while also adapting to different (cultural) circumstances. To ensure the success of this (emotional) balancing act, we do not only need a rich vocabulary and flawless grammar but also an authentic style of communication. Poetry in Business™ by TalkShop.cc is a new consulting service that supports individuals, teams and organizations in developing an effective communication behavior, building collaborative teams, and exploring new thinking avenues. The concept is built around the idea that true innovation emerges from successful communication in diverse settings. While we cannot measure the exact impact of effective communication, we strongly believe that motivation of profit and exploration of ideas is

4

compatible if we put the focus on the creative and collaborative processes that lead us to innovative solutions. Poetry in Business™ emphasizes the human aspect of communication in international (business) settings. It reconnects learners with their inspirational powers and helps them explore things and situations with curiosity, from all angles, and describe them in new ways. Poetry in Business™ is our passion. We love to create experiential learning environments and continually extend and add charisma to our toolbox – a blended mix of explorative, introspective and artistic learning activities that open up new possibilities for everyone involved.

Concept, areas of application, benefits

Poetry in Business™ is a consulting service and training format by TalkShop.cc that targets organizations, teams and individuals. The concept is built around the idea that true innovation emerges from successful communication in diverse settings. Poetry in Business™ emphasizes the human aspect of international business and reconnects you with your inspirational powers. While the concept is not limited to reading and interpreting poems, poetry can be a powerful instrument for cultivating the creative spirit and opening up new thinking space in a time where cultures of benchmarks may keep us ‘boxed-in’. Unwilling to be labeled, poetry goes beyond the literal and evokes intense emotions in us, surprises us with the unexpected flow of images it creates, leading to fresh ideas and unexpected perspectives. We are convinced that motivation of profit and exploration of ideas is compatible if the focus is on the underlying creative and collaborative processes – the how that leads to innovative solutions.

Language learning with poetry Poetry in Business™ language learning and communications workshops provide a playful approach to developing an authentic style of communication in a second language - English. Workshop participants experience the impact of their communication behavior in cross-cultural settings. With the help of artistic media, including poetry, role play, act storming and a variety of interactive and introspective learning activities, they explore the different facets of their personality and connect with a core self. As a result of this workshop series, participants will be more aware of their attributes and communicative strenghts. What is more, they will be able to better understand and even anticipate the needs and expectations of others and adapt their style of communication accordingly. Most importantly, participants will be motivated to further improve their language and overall communication skills in their second language. You can book the complete workshop series as a face to face seminar, pick individual modules or choose a blended learning format. The poet herself will participate in the workshops if you wish. On the following pages, we invite you to read, listen to and watch some of the poems we use in our workshops to provide participants with emotional impulses. Professional actors and speakers perform the poems.

Poetry in Business™

by TalkShop.cc Poems as learning content: the Alter Ego series

What can we learn from alter egos? We usually associate alter ego with the dark side of a person, her other face. Poetry in Business™ offers an alternative approach: The alter ego workshop series highlights emotions and issues we encounter in daily business settings.

Andrea Enriquez Cousino

The Boss, The Clown, The Magician, Angel, Burnout and Copy Cat use a language that is widely accessible and describe the emotional needs and inner struggles that we may know from our bosses, project partners, colleagues and maybe even from ourselves. These emotions reflect our attitude and its impact on our performance at work, our relationships and everyone around

POETRY IN BUSINESSTM

us. After all, business is about inter-relatedness, personal and organizational needs, efficiencies and shortcomings. Poetry in Business™ invites workshop participants to adopt a playful approach towards discovering personal attributes, emotional needs and sources of inspiration by means of poems, role play, spontaneity training, act storming and other explorative and introspective learning activities. In this way, alter egos become a powerful instrument, allowing learners to reconnect with their intuitive and inspirational powers and helping them to unfold their full communication potential in the foreign language.

Managers are human beings

THE

BOSS 14

from Lovelyn Andrade for TalkShop.cc interpreted by Klaus Schaurhofer, gelesen von Alexia Hagen POETRY IN BUSINESSTM

9am - 10 am I wear my dark suit, And my polished handmade shoes, I jump into my expensive car, My briefcase on the backseat, Flashed my card to the security, I sat on my swivel chair, The boss is here. 10am - 2pm I scream at my assistant, For messing up my meetings today, Damn! Everybody wants something from me, Damn! Everybody needs something from me, Damn! All these urgencies, You‘d think this world, Will collapse without me! Might be true because I‘m the boss, And I could change the world, With my signature.

3pm - 8pm Customers and clients all have a say, That I, the Boss, Is better than anybody, Cheers everyone, Let‘s laugh and pretend, We like each other, Drink all you can, I will sign the bill, After all, I‘m the boss, Sky is not the limit. 8pm - 5am I threw my briefcase on the backseat Of my expensive car, Drove home to my baby, My dark suit on the empty chair, And my polished handmade shoes, Tucked quietly on the old rack, Said hello to my love, And my mask dropped on the floor, I am a little boy, Needing love, needing care, Who is the boss now?

2pm - 3pm Man, I‘m so important! Papers to sign keep landing on my desk, Projects worth billions, Awaiting for my review, What will my company be Without me? I‘m the boss, And their money making machine, Damn I gotta get lunch, Fuck you all, Bananas alone won‘t keep me going.

15

I know someone, He collects jars, Inside these jars, Are my memories. He is mainly there, When I am alone, Sometimes, I am sad And he takes my sadness And locks it in a jar. Once I was crying, And he drew a handkerchief, On a piece of paper. My tears dripped, Like drops of rain, On his drawing. I thought he will be mad, Instead, He smiled at me And blew on the paper. That‘s all it took, For a rainbow to appear, I forgot my sadness, But he did not forget To seal the jar. I know someone, He collects jars, Inside these jars, Are my memories.

Once I was laughing so hard, My belly was hurting, He asked me to laugh On a golden cup, The sound was like music! I did it again and again Until I ran out of laughter! He took the golden cup And sealed the jar. I know someone, He collects jars, Inside these jars, Are my memories. I see him once in a while now, Most of the meetings, I am full of questions. I ask him why, My tears fall from my eyes? I ask him why, My mouth widens, At the sight of a rainbow? I ask him why, I love thunders? No answer. He has none. But he gave me jars, Once I opened them, He never returned again.

He is mainly there, When I am alone, Sometimes, I am happy He takes my joy, And locks it in a jar.

ANGEL

from Lovelyn Andrade for TalkShop.cc interpreted by Alexia Hagen

My guardian angel

POETRY IN BUSINESSTM

I love her I adore her Her lips, always sealed Give a warning To speak only when needed. She operates, Like a bird. She flies, With wings, I never saw. She arrives sudden, And almost always dramatic. She is coming, And is going for the kill. She flies, With wings, I never witnessed But felt. I know the smoothness Of silky feathers, Enveloping my body. As soon as I am in, I feel empowered. I let her take me higher, Thunder and lightning Do not scare me. I trust her, And I surrender to her ways. I looked, And she is not there. But I know, That she is not far from me. I held in my hand, A sword, Sharp and long, I am not here to be wounded.

Like an offering, I kneeled on the altar, Blood dripping on the sword. She shows herself again, A beautiful woman, Of long, dark hair Flowing freely against the wind. Her ankles, Adorned with beads, Of torquiose, magenta and white. Her eyes are dark, So dark, That no light Will ever pass through it. They beam with pride And love, She reached for the sword And prepared to leave, Lips still sealed, But I heard her nonetheless. She said: I will return again, When your pain, Devours your strength. I will come, And my wings will protect you. And you will be strong And no one will dare, To hurt you again. I love her. I really adore her. Sometimes, I close my eyes, And I am her.

A clown seeks laughter

THE

CLOWN

from Lovelyn Andrade for TalkShop.cc

Here he comes, He never arrives subtly, And you can‘t help but stare, How could one not? Everybody expects him, He is the clown after all. His “hello” is never shy, It echoes within the four corners, I won‘t be surprised, If you stop chewing your food, And champagne bubbles, Will dramatically suspend in the air. He smiles so bright, Even brighter, Than all those spotlights, Following his movements, And oh! Gorgeous mouth, Everyone listens and hangs on, To every word he spits, Waiting for the right moment, To laugh and cheer of yet another, Witty and original word play. Sure, he is a clown, But not your typical clown, For he has his style, And his colors are coordinated, Everybody loves him, Wanting him to be around everywhere, The life of the party. For a clown, He is the one who feels the most, All he needs to do, Is to reach out his hands, And touch you, And he feels your sorrows and tears, But a clown won‘t tell you, That you are sad, POETRY IN BUSINESSTM

Instead, He will tell you stories, Just to make sure, You will burst into laughter. Not all clowns prepare tricks, Some clowns, like him, Prefer to touch your heart, Mingle with your sadness, And give you a moment of joy, Not expecting anything in return, For their sole goal as clowns, Is to give you entertainment. Perhaps clowns are also magicians, For they never run out of laughter. Who keeps the clowns laughing, When the audience are gone? Here he comes, He never arrives subtly, And I can‘t help but stare, How could I not? I have been waiting for him, He is my clown after all. Slowly, his bright smile fades, He stares in the mirror, And starts to cry, For he sees a reflection, Of a clown who fights everyday, Against his own sorrow, His own heart ache, His own weakness, And his own defeat, There on that mirror, If only, Someone could make a clown smile.

COPY CAT

from Lovelyn Andrade for TalkShop.cc

You won‘t see her often at parties, She prefers to hide in her own cave, No, she is not scared of the sunlight, She is afraid, Everyone will find out: She is a copycat. At work, she is always busy, Watching what others do, She waits for the right time, For she is clever, She listens carefully about your ideas, Watch out! She will impress your boss, She mastered your idea! Clap your hands, Ain‘t she doing a great job?

22

You won‘t see her mingling, You‘d think she is shy, But that‘s how she plays you, While you focus on your empathy, She has been watching you, Now, she has already your style, Ah! Aint she the most beautiful?

At home, the copycat studies herself, She speaks better, Her legs are longer, She is smarter, And her face is prettier. I hear the copycat say: “Am I just perfect and everyone is crap!” She goes out and pretends, She does not care about the world, After all, She is better than anybody, She knows everything, You can not mistake her for a fool, If you ask the copycat, She is the best, And idiots are for you and me.

POETRY IN BUSINESSTM

Foto: Fabian Dembski

Keep morale in mind The copycat does not care, Whether you are sincere or not, As long as, You are giving her compliments, The copycat only cares, That your attention is on her, Yes, praise her for her copied style, Yes, praise her for her borrowed wit, Yes, praise her for doing things, Better than anyone does, Yes, praise her for being unique, It is such a talent, To live a copied life. But ask the copycat what she does, When she is alone, And there is no audience. I tell you what she does. She hides under her blanket, Hating her life, And swallows its bitterness. How come the copycat, Is not jumping with joy? I tell you why, A copied happiness, my Dear, Is not the real thing.

Copycat! You have copied almost everyone! Copycat! You have copied success! Copycat! Look who loves you! Surprised? Copycats, like you, do! Attention all copycats! Come up on the stage! Everyone wants to witness, Which copycat is better, Than the copycat! Exhausted? Do not be frustrated, If judges did not choose you, Let me tell you something, Dear Copycat, Copy yourself!

23

I will begin this poem, With the ending of this poem: Practise authenticity, You are not perfect, But you matter. Listen, You are not a hamster, Stop saying you can not pause, Running on a wheel endlessly, Is not a way to live, You have the power to step out, Rest your tired body, How does the sound of waves suit you? Look, You are not born a slave, Stop saying yes to everything, Stop filling your plate, Of more than you can chew, It is never going to please everyone, One day, you will burst, How about bursting into laughter? There you go, laugh, It is the best medicine. Move, You are not a tree, Stop saying you can not change place, Or is that your excuse, For having your esteem so used? It is not anyone‘s job, To boost your confidence, It is yours! How about praising yourself?

24

Swallow, The bitterness and frustrations, Then release that stinky gas behind you, Everyone makes mistakes and fails, Yet, Not everyone dwells in the good of it, Of course, It is easier to wallow in suffering, And say, “I failed again”, If that is you, Then you belong to the weak. Burn out is you, If you keep yourself in the same rythm, Like a pointless hamster on wheel, Burn out is you, If you never learn to say NO, Burn out is you, If you allow yourself to be stagnant, Burn out is you, If you stop valuing yourself, Burn out is you, If you can not forgive your mistakes, Burn out is: You taking the easy road to blame, Everything and everyone except yourself. Burn out is: You expecting everything to change, Yet you remain the same. I will end this poem, With the beginning of this poem. Practise authenticity, You are not perfect, But you matter, Believe that, before you quit!

LOVELYN ANDRADE Poet, lives in Vienna

Lovelyn, what makes you write poetry? Poetry is my way of preserving memories: a face, a feeling, a place. What inspired you to write about alter egos? We meet a lot of people everyday, but to get to know people, we’ve got to talk, laugh and share with them. I believe that we customize our personalities to different situations, whether we are aware of it or not. So I wrote the Alter Ego poems to inspire people to embrace their various versions of „self “ as part of them. After all, a diamond is not a diamond without its facets, right? Which is your favorite alter ego and why? The Angel. It reminds me that when I am weak, I have another me, who is strong – and that I always have access to it. A perfect day... for me (and everyone around me) is when my alter egos are vibrating in unison, preferably in my bikini on a sandy beach. My favorite destination… is a sanctuary where all the things and people I’ve lost are stored and remain accessible through a prayer. I wrote my first poem… when I was 8 years old. My teacher asked me to represent my class at the school’s language month contest (Buwan Ng Wika). The theme was illegal logging. I wrote a poem in Tagalog, my mother tongue, about a talking tree and a little girl. I recited it and won the first prize.

Lovelyn Andrade was born and raised in the Philippines and lives in Vienna. She collects stories from people she meets and saves these encounters in her poems. Her personal alter egos, apart from „The Angel“, were not poetically divulged in this booklet. She is a single mother of three wonderful children –  Zylas (16), Abby (14) and Alois (10).

ALEXIA HAGEN

Singer and Fintech manager, lives in London

Alexia is an Austrian-born Canadian living in London. She studied acting at the University of British Columbia before relocating to the UK and now balances her time between being musician in a London-based band and working in fintech.

28

Alexia, what’s your personal relationship with poetry? Whether words, music, art – it’s where I search for answers or seek comradery in life’s journey. As a teenager I remember reading everything from Jack Kerouac, to Keats, to Walt Whitman, to Bob Dylan or Beatles lyrics and feeling connected, understood. Leonard Cohen said it so beautifully, “Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.“ What’s your favorite alter ego and why? We all apply filters in our daily lives depending on the people around us or the circumstances. What seems rare these days is to be one’s whole self  good, bad, silly, fierce, kind – in front of others. There are very few people in this world who I can let go with, drop all masks and just expose all of myself to. That‘s my favorite. What’s the influence of art on your daily work life? Do you ever have moments where you’re at your desk on a normal day and suddenly observe yourself, your situation and the conversations being had around you and think, „Wow – this could be a scene in a play or TV show...“? Real life influences art and art influences life – one cannot exist without the other. London is … exciting, diverse, inspiring and wise. The city has many, many stories to tell and after 10 years of living here I still haven’t scratched the surface. Singing … for me is truth. Our voice is unique, like a fingerprint. There’s no hiding behind or masking a voice and I find singing quite liberating in that regard whether through joy, through tears. The most inspiring place for me … is by the ocean. It always makes me feel whole and inspired. That or watching people come and go at the Union Square Cafe in New York City over free coffee refills.

CARLA HARDY Actress, lives in Amsterdam

Carla, what is your personal relationship with poetry? The beautiful thing about poetry is that you can interpret it in a lot of different ways. A poem can mean a whole universe to different people. A good poem is a source of endless inspiration as it is not restrictive and does not try to control our emotions. What did you personally take away from performing “The Magician”? When you are in front of a camera, all you want is get the message across. That was my focus when performing “The Magician”. Once I start thinking about my own jars and sealed memories, I can get very emotional. So when reciting the poem, the challenge for me was to reach my audience, rather than being busy with my own emotions. What is your biggest source of inspiration? Everything and everyone – the imperfection of things, the shortcomings of people. They are an endless source of inspiration for me and probably for all artists – painters, musicians, writers. What is your favorite personal alter ego? My favorite personal alter ego is a persona who lives far away from the city, keeps a goat and a vegetable garden. Amsterdam stands for … a city where I have lived since the age of 20. It is my home, simply because my children love the city so much. Amsterdam was such a free and liberal city back in the 70ies, when I was at drama school. Unfortunately, this has changed quite a bit. This was the city I fell in love with. My favorite destination … is being a grandmother! 30

KLAUS SCHAURHOFER

Actor, lives in Vienna

The Austrian actor Klaus Schaur hofer was about to launch a career in the legal profession when he found out that his purpose in life is to make other people happy through acting. At the age of 35 he left the law behind and took acting classes in Paris. Ever since, he has been performing at local summer theaters, acting as a cliniclown, working as a presenter, and doing his own reader’s theater projects for schools.

32

Klaus, what’s your personal relationship with poetry? Poetry to me is like making music with words... and who doesn’t like music? What’s your favorite personality facet of “The Boss”? It was nice to discover that in each person there might be a lonesome, hurt little boy who has basic needs like love and care. What did you personally take away from this poetry experience? Actually, I don´t like acting on camera so much as I miss the audience. Acting out the poem was really great fun, though! Director and cameraman were my audience, rather than “the people on the other side of the camera”. Vienna is … the place where most people I like and love live ... Vienna is my home. Theater for me is best explained … by a quote by Max Reinhardt: “Theater is the happiest haven for those who have secretly put their childhood in their pockets, so that they can continue to play to the end of their days.” Theater for me is a place of big freedom where you can expose yourself and feel at home at the same time. It’s a place where you can make people laugh, smile, reflect, feeling touched ... all of which makes great sense (to me). My biggest dream … can only be whispered into a friend’s ear...

Immanuel Degn was born into a family of artists. Already as a child he experimented with his grandfather’s film camera. In 2001, he completed his studies of sculpture and art and in 2005, he graduated from acting school. Immanuel started his own movie production company back in 2001.

Immanuel Degn Actor, lives in Innsbruck

Immanuel, what’s your personal relationship with poetry? I enjoyed writing poems myself when I was younger. And I love reading poems. I have read a lot of good and very inspiring poetry. What was it like to act out “Burnout”? Acting out “Burnout“ was challenging but also interesting and inspiring in many ways. I really enjoyed the message of the poem, it is deep, and it mirrors the emptiness that fills us from time to time in our life. What did you personally take away from performing “Burnout”? Personally, I definitely benefitted from dealing with the text and from acting it out. I think it even gave me fresh energy to go about my other film projects. Home for me is ... ... Innsbruck. I love the town, the people, the surrounding nature. What’s your biggest dream? My biggest dream is to realise the big movie projects I am burning for. I have spent a lot of time in LA to do filming. I am currently finalising a feature film. Acting to me means ... When I act, I feel that I am alive.
