Freshwater for the future
3. Restoring ecosystems for livelihood Introduction: Ecosystems consist of a biological community, its organisms interacting, with each one essential to the whole. Vital to human well-being, ecosystems also provide a range of services. As well as providing a water supply, they yield food, regulate floodwater and climate, treat wastewater, manage drought, support soil formation and nutrient cycling and often have important cultural value as well. Without water there are no ecosystems, but in turn water sustainability depends on how these ecosystems are managed.
