From there our world tour takes us to France in Très Chic, for a deep dive into the lasting fashion impact of French New Wave cinema.
The thrill of Monaco’s Formula 1 circuit follows in A Symphony of Speed, where we zoom in to uncover the jaw-dropping action and teamwork that goes into a twosecond snapshot of a race, before taking on a more leisurely pace in Bermuda with a look at rum’s rise as a luxury spirit.
We hope this issue inspires you to take the leap and spread the net far and wide in your search for the perfect residence, and as ever, Christie’s International Real Estate is honored to assist you with our knowledge and expertise.

How does where you live shape how you see the world? That’s the question we asked global affiliates and local creatives based in some of the most beautiful locations on the planet—what are the places that spark inspiration?

Mike Corey is a producer and author based in Los Angeles, California
In L.A. you can spend hours in eight lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper. So it’s great to be able to drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, a two-lane road, without a care. The views are gorgeous. If you’re traveling north towards San Francisco, you have ocean to the left, mountains to the right.
There’s a specific spot which I love, a classic motorlodge, just outside Carmel on the Big Sur coastline. You can sit on the balcony, overlooking the ocean with the cliffs dropping away below you. At night, there’s no light pollution, the moon picks up the wave tops and you can hear them crashing on the rocks below. You forget everything, you can live in the moment.
I grew up in the Midwest, which is very flat and has a lot of farmland. It blew me away when I came to California that there was land that had no other purpose than to be spectacular. It’s just beautiful. F

Tom Lindner is a broker at Svoboda & Williams Christie’s International Real Estate in Prague
My family came from Czechia, so Prague was almost a legendary city to me. I grew up in Kansas in the United States, and didn’t visit until about three years ago when I passed through for the day and met my now-fiancée. Within six months, I was living here full-time and I still have to pinch myself. It’s just magical.
I love to go up to Letná Park, which has a hill from which you can see out over the whole of the Old Town, the Vltava River, and the Charles Bridge. One of my favorite things here is all the spires. Prague is known as the Golden City of One Hundred Spires, and you can see why from Letná Park. I can look down over the landscape and think about all the thousands of hours it took to create those buildings and their architectural detailing. I get a sense of the huge sweep of history within the city.

Carrie McCormick is a broker at @properties Christie’s International Real Estate in Chicago
There are few sights to inspire wonder and awe at human ingenuity like a soaring city skyline, the brick-and-mortar jungle so many of us call home. Fewer still quicken the pulse quite as much as Chicago, with its characterful mix of heritage and new architecture piercing the air, and the waters of Lake Michigan sparkling beyond.
The view looking up from street level is dizzying, but seen from up in the sky it takes on a whole new dimension, and it’s never more impressive than glimpsed from the penthouse in Park Tower on North Michigan Avenue. The vast 15-room apartment spans the entire 64th floor, and as you move through its grand interiors, expansive views of the city unfold through its floor-to-ceiling windows. And while the streets below are abuzz with noise and action, up here all is peaceful, allowing you to sit back and drink it all in. F

René Niederer is a photographer in Urnäsch
I first discovered this view in 2021. It’s just very beautiful, very picturesque. It’s always different no matter how often I go. It makes me feel at peace.
The peak in the background is Säntis, one of the most impressive mountains in eastern Switzerland, and the whole atmosphere at this place is so Swiss. There are the mountains, forest, and a little Swiss cottage. You can hear cow bells, and in the holidays, some local farmers still wear traditional clothes. It feels timeless.

Auburn Lucas is co-owner of Christie’s International Real Estate Dominican Republic
One of the things I love about the Dominican Republic is that the island has so much to offer. Every part has stunning views but, if I were forced to choose, I would say the northern coast is the most beautiful. It is very lush, full of green mountains, very serene—it’s where you go to connect with nature. It’s very untapped, a place to escape to. F
Sofia Minson is an artist living in Northland, North Island
We’re spoiled for choice for views in New Zealand, but the one that I am continuously drawn to is Aoraki, on the South Island. It’s our biggest mountain. Aoraki sits on the shores of Lake Pukaki, which has water that is an incredible milky blue—you look at that then you see this huge mountain emerging from it.
What’s so inspiring about it is that it has different moods. You get a very mysterious Lord of the Rings quality when the clouds come swirling down. Other times, you get brilliant clear days when the snow and water sparkle. It’s stunning to witness.

I grew up on the North Island, far away from Aoraki, and I spent time on the coast admiring the ocean. But Aoraki almost gives me an out-of-body feeling it’s so beautiful. It deepens my links with my heritage—my Māori ancestors are from the East Cape of the North Island. In the Māori worldview, a mountain is one of the most sacred places, where land meets the heavens, where the gods meet us humans.
I started painting Aoraki as a teenager, long before I ever visited it, copying it from postcards. I always wanted to include it in my art. It has a shocking beauty. F

Ruth Druart is an author based in Paris, France, whose books include While Paris Slept Exceptional views
My son has an apartment just off Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris. From the tiny balcony I can see not only Place des Vosges, but also the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and Sacré-Coeur. Looking out over the rooftops, I’ve often imagined Victor Hugo, whose apartment was on this square, strolling through the gardens, wandering under the arches, and talking to friends in front of the fountain. It provided the inspiration for my second novel, The Last Hours in Paris. I imagined the square through the eyes of the protagonist, Sebastian, a German soldier, and part of the occupying force during World War II. Paris filled me with a longing to write, and the writing groups who meet in cafes provided me with a network of like-minded people. I think Victor Hugo would recognize the square and streets now. They haven’t changed—the only difference is the people who walk them.

Marty Frank is the founder of Christie’s International Real Estate, Summit in Breckenridge, Colorado
I grew up in Colorado, but it wasn’t until I was 19—driving past Lake Dillon—that I understood the power of this landscape. The way the sun caught the water, with the mountains rising behind it, stopped me in my tracks. Even now, I’m continually struck by how much beauty exists here.
My office is in Breckenridge, a place known for its world-class skiing—but what I love most is what reveals itself beyond the seasons. When the snow melts, a road winds up to the top of the ski mountain,

opening to panoramic views of the valley and surrounding peaks. In the evenings, shadows stretch across the slopes, clouds drift past, and time seems to slow.
The first time I drove up there was 25 years ago with my wife. We passed deer and a fox family before reaching the summit—wild and breathtaking. As the sun set, she said, “This is so beautiful, I feel like you brought me here to give me jewelry.”
It reminds you why people don’t just visit Colorado—they choose to live here. F

Corso Baccheschi Berti is the owner of Castello di Vicarello, a hotel in Tuscany, Italy
The view closest to my heart is the one that is closest to home. My parents bought this medieval castle in the 1970s and I joke with my guests that we have been renovating for 50 years. We moved into one section in the 1990s when I was four or five, so I have grown up with these surroundings and this wonderful view.
From Castello di Vicarello, you look out on our olive groves and vineyards, the forests and the Ombrone River. On a clear day, you can see for miles from Marina di

Grosseto and the island of Elba on the coast to the hill town of Seggiano. It’s stunning: simple, peaceful, and meditative.
To me, it’s always felt like a safe haven— the area is very sparsely populated and the surroundings haven’t changed. When my parents bought the estate, all the land was very run down, so when I look at the landscape now I know how much work has gone into it. But if you give time to something, with devotion and passion, this view reminds me what can be achieved. •
Property spotlight: picture perfect

Surrounded by some of the state’s finest mountain views, this home in the Cliffs at Glassy, South Carolina, is a golfer’s delight
With more than 400 golf courses, South Carolina is a state that loves the sport. But even by South Carolinian standards, the Cliffs at Glassy course is special: at 3,000 feet (914 m) on Glassy Mountain, it is one of the most spectacular in the country. Completed in 1993, it’s surrounded by forest and plunging slopes, making some of its holes literal cliffhangers. Where golfers go, housebuilders follow. An extensive, country-club-style, gated community has grown up around the course—one of seven in the area known as the Cliffs—and one of its most covetable homes is now for sale. Drive onto the forecourt of the property on Cliffs Parkway and you are met by an impressive home. It is at the rear of the property, however, that the magic happens.
“When you get around the back, the views just drop away in front of you,” says Damian Hall of Blackstream Christie’s International Real Estate, who is marketing the property. “It is absolutely incredible.”
Described as the place “where the sky kisses the mountains,” this is not simply marketing hyperbole. The views from this house are a breathtaking 75-mile (121 km) sweep that takes in the Blue Ridge Mountains in all their staggering, hazy beauty. The lights of the town of Greer, about 25 miles (40 km) away, on the F

outskirts of Greenville, are visible at night, twinkling in the distance. Neighboring properties are discreetly screened by foliage, but a few hundred yards away on a cliff is a picture-perfect chapel, which only adds to the charm of the outlook.
The house, as you would expect, makes the most of the stunning panorama. The living area features picture windows along the rear elevation, some of them double height, which seem to bring the mountains into the room. A grand staircase and gallery emphasize the soaring ceilings. Five bedrooms include an enormous main-level primary suite, again with those amazing views. The pool is ideally situated on a terrace that overlooks the panorama, and there are endless opportunities to walk around the various lookout points within the property’s 3.5 acres (1.4 ha).
A large part of the attraction of the Cliffs communities is their emphasis on wellness. Each one has a golf course, a fitness center, tennis and pickleball courts,
and a network of beautiful hiking trails, while there are three that lie right next to a lake for freshwater swimming, boating, paddleboarding, and more (the seven communities here are all accessible to residents). These facilities, paired with the Cliffs’ mild climate, mean they have attracted active snowbirds, successful businesspeople from the Carolinas and Georgia who want some clear mountain air, and, increasingly, people from the northeast and Midwest who are looking for a second home. But the owners of this house know what will sell their property, wherever the buyer comes from.
“When the current owners saw the house for the first time, they bought it in three days,” says Hall. “They said, ‘Damian, walk whoever comes to see it outside. They’ll want to buy it.’” •

Gamine, bold, unforgettable… how the women of the French New Wave movement transformed cinema and style
s love letters to French cinema and its stars go, Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater’s recent reimagining of Jean-Luc Godard’s classic 1960 movie À bout de souffle (Breathless), takes some beating. The film marks a return to a time when a woman with a pixie cut and an air of indifference sparked a style revolution simply by wearing cropped pants, a striped T-shirt, and a wry smile.
The French New Wave art-film movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s was a cultural reset that saw directors swap studio glamour for handheld cameras and gritty Parisian streets. Its actresses reflected that freedom by discarding convention, too. They spoke their minds and wore what felt right. That understated aesthetic still defines effortless style: sharp tailoring, undone hair, a hint of make-up, and self-assurance.
That spirit mirrors today’s fashion mood. Designers from Michael Rider at Celine to Matthieu Blazy at Chanel are revisiting the pared-back look of the era. The pixie haircut, the trench coat, the Breton stripe are all back—in fact, they never really went away. For decades, they have been worn on runways, chiming perfectly with the release of Nouvelle Vague
The term nouvelle vague, coined by critics in the late 1950s, captured the energy of an era—a new generation of directors and writers such as Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, and Agnès Varda, who shot films on the move, using natural light and recording real conversations. If Hollywood was all about champagne, diamonds, and discipline, the French New Wave was black coffee, smoky cafes, and spontaneity.
The movement changed cinema with its grainy realism, but it also changed how women dressed and moved in the world. At its center were women who seemed real, looking like they’d got ready on the go. Their clothes were lived-in, reflecting the mood of a post-war generation searching for authenticity.
The wardrobes of four of the era’s biggest stars— Catherine Deneuve and Jeanne Moreau, American Jean Seberg, and Dane-turned-Parisian Anna Karina— were as expressive and as natural as their dialogue. Fashion was no longer about fantasy, it was about the beauty found in everyday life. That authenticity is what endures today, with designers and stars reinterpreting the allure of these four women for a new generation. F

With her cropped blonde pixie-cut hair, Jean Seberg redefined Parisian style. Playing Patricia Franchini, an American girl lost in Paris in the 1960 film À bout de souffle, her New York Herald Tribune T-shirt and cigarette pants became shorthand for a new kind of cool that balanced American ease with French insouciance; fuss-free, androgynous, and just a little
bit radical. Breton stripes, slogan tees, slim pants, and flat ballet pumps were about as far away from the fuss and embellishment of 1950s studio glamour as possible. Today, Seberg’s influence is everywhere; it’s in Celine’s sharp minimalism, in Calvin Klein’s and Khaite’s cool monochromes, and the pared-back gamine look of Taylor Swift and Michelle Williams.

New wave of New Wave

Catherine Deneuve’s trench coat style for SS26, and Emma Stone wears a Deneuve-inspired bow; Jean Seberg in À bout de souffle with Jean-Paul Belmondo (left); Catherine Deneuve (right).

Catherine Deneuve’s polish
Deneuve’s on-screen look—immaculate refinement with a hint of edge—is as influential today as it was in the 1960s. As Geneviève Emery in 1964’s Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The umbrellas of Cherbourg), she made simple rainwear, A-line dresses, and a cool blonde bouffant held with wide satin bows feel iconic, a look copied by women worldwide. By 1967’s Belle de jour (Beauty of the day), that simple silhouette gave way to something more provocative. Here, she turned simple belted trench coats, crisp dresses, and patent court shoes into symbols of seduction, and helped cement the little black dress (LBD) as a wardrobe essential. Off-screen, her long collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent helped define Parisian chic: clean lines, impeccable tailoring, and elegant restraint. Today, that influence is everywhere, from Saint Laurent’s SS26 revival of belted raincoats and pared-back LBDs (watched over from the front row by Deneuve herself) to the modern wardrobes of actors such as Emma Stone, Zoë Kravitz, and Léa Seydoux. F

Jeanne Moreau’s androgyny
In Jules et Jim in 1962, Moreau’s character, Catherine, wore men’s sweaters, simple trench coats, and tailored pants with an easy confidence, decades before gender-fluid fashion became part of the global conversation. Her presence, like her style, was self-assured and it completely redefined femininity. Moreau’s wardrobe—both on and off screen—was more about power than prettiness, with clean lines, muted tones, and duality that remain irresistible to designers and A-listers today. You’ll see the same genderblurring confidence in Kristen Stewart’s go-to tuxedos, Janelle Monáe’s sleek tailoring, and Tilda Swinton’s sculptural suits. On the runway, the boyish vibe of creative director Matthieu Blazy’s first collection for Chanel was heavily influenced by women borrowing their boyfriend’s clothes.

French fashion (Above, from top) Chanel’s SS26 runway channels Moreau; Zooey Deschanel’s Anna Karina look at Paris Fashion Week; Jean Moreau (left); Anna Karina (right).

If Seberg was about minimalism and Moreau androgyny, Anna Karina was pure playfulness. Godard’s muse (and one-time wife) was instantly recognizable with her blunt bangs, doe eyes, and bold red lip. Her clothes were as vivid as her standout performances—think oversized collars and cuffs in 1965’s Alphaville, and bright colors that popped against Paris’s monochrome streets in Godard’s move into color film. In 1961’s Une femme est une femme (A woman is a woman), her carefree character Angéla sums up the mood of the moment when her partner says, “I don’t like that tartan skirt on you,” and she replies, “Good, I’m not trying to please anyone.” Karina’s style was a balance of innocence and edge. At a time when post-war Europe dressed conservatively, her bright looks made fashion feel fun again. That mod-style sense of energy continues to inspire fashion houses today. Both Miu Miu and Paul Costelloe have
sent retro-feminine silhouettes down SS26 runways and, on the red carpet, Marion Cotillard and Zooey Deschanel have tapped into Karina’s youthful spirit.
The women of the French New Wave embodied authenticity—which fashion is always chasing. And while they each had their own distinct vibe, when you bring them together they form a picture of modern femininity that values originality over perfection.
As Nouvelle Vague enjoys its moment, the French New Wave aesthetic legacy lives on. The clothes are timeless but it’s the attitude that lingers—the idea that style begins with how you live, not just how you look. In an age where digital perfection reigns, this renewed appetite for authenticity feels as radical as ever. • Christine Faughlin is a writer and editor who has written for lifestyle titles for more than 25 years
Once dismissed as merely a rough-and-ready liquor beloved by pirates and sailors, rum is enjoying a renaissance as the world’s most singular spirit. We take a look at its recent elevation to the drink of choice for cocktail connoisseurs and sophisticated sippers, and discover the Bermudian brand that has raised the bar for distillers everywhere
or centuries, rum has been the renegade of the spirits world—a buccaneer’s brew, born of sugarcane, sweat, and sea spray. It was the stuff of grog and gunfire, the currency of corsairs, and for much of its life it carried the faint whiff of rebellion. Rum was rough. Rum was ready. But rum was not refined.
Until now. Over the past decade, rum has staged one of the most fascinating transformations in the world of drinks. No longer confined to pirate clichés, this once-humble spirit has matured into a liquid worthy of crystal decanters and connoisseurs’ cabinets. What was once the preserve of sailors and swashbucklers has become the darling of discerning drinkers—a serious, sophisticated spirit that sits comfortably beside fine whiskey and cognac.
To understand rum’s renaissance, one must return to its elemental heart: sugarcane. Grown in tropical climes, this hardy grass carries within it a universe of flavor—a fingerprint of soil, sun, and sea that mirrors the concept of terroir so cherished in winemaking.
In essence, every rum begins life as a celebration of place. Whether it’s distilled from fresh cane juice or molasses, that base material captures the character of its homeland. As rum producers have embraced this idea, they’ve begun to highlight provenance—the subtle differences between cane grown in Barbados, Jamaica, or Trinidad—and to express that sense of identity through more transparent production and longer, more nuanced aging.
“No longer confined to pirate clichés, this once-humble spirit has matured into a liquid worthy of crystal decanters.”
This shift toward terroir and craftsmanship has been fundamental to rum’s rise. Drinkers today are thirsty for authenticity. They want spirits with a story, born of tradition and tied to geography. Rum, with its deep history and its broad array of styles, is perfectly poised to meet that demand.
One of rum’s greatest strengths lies in its versatility. Unlike Scotch or Irish whiskey, which are bound by rigid geographical and stylistic rules, rum has a more fluid set of values, despite some locations, such as Jamaica, proudly protecting its production credentials with Geographical Indication status. Rum can effectively be distilled anywhere sugarcane grows, in pot stills or column stills, from molasses or fresh juice, and aged in a dizzying array of casks—from ex-bourbon barrels and wine casks to sherry butts and beyond.
This freedom means rum can be light and floral, dark and brooding, or rich and spicy. It can dance in a daiquiri, smolder in an old fashioned, or unfold in a nosing glass, neat and contemplative. It is equally at home on a beach or a city bar top.
That flexibility has been crucial to rum’s newfound appeal. Bartenders adore it for its range and depth, while collectors have begun to seek out single-cask and vintage statement bottlings with the same fervor once reserved for rare Scotch. The result is a spirit that feels both familiar and excitingly new; a chameleon with centuries of soul.
In the past, rum was often bottled young, designed to deliver punch rather than poise. But the rum distillers of today have been driven by an embrace of maturation—the slow, transformative alchemy that occurs when spirit meets oak. Brands such as Jamaica’s Hampden Estate and Barbados’s FourSquare have explored the complexity to be discovered in wellaged rum, including darker, richer notes, warming spices, and a deep, resonant oakiness that brings a refinement to the enjoyment of slowly sipping rum.
Aging in tropical climates, such as Bermuda, accelerates the interaction between rum and cask. F

The warm air and humidity breathe through the wood, drawing out notes of vanilla, spice, and caramel, while the sea breeze adds a whisper of salinity. What emerges after a decade or more is a spirit of astonishing depth: alive, complex, and resonant.
Producers have also become more experimental with their choice of casks. Some rums are additionally matured or finished in port or madeira barrels, lending layers of fruit and sweetness; others rest in sherry or wine casks, borrowing elegance and subtlety from other worlds. Each decision made, from the char level of the barrel to the humidity of the warehouse, shapes the final character.
It is this focus on aging that has elevated rum from a mere mixing spirit to a sipping one.
The Bermudian distinction
Among the many island nations that have made rum their calling card, Bermuda occupies a particularly interesting niche. With its unique climate and maritime geography, the island produces rums that are smooth yet muscular, complex yet inviting.
Bermudian rum often leans toward the darker side—rich, molasses-based distillates that evoke the smell of ocean air mingled with brown sugar and spice. The limestone-filtered water used in fermentation contributes to its purity and balance, while aging in the island’s humid cellars deepens its color and flavor.
It’s here that Goslings, Bermuda’s most famous distiller, comes into its own. Founded in 1806, Goslings is synonymous with the island’s rum heritage, and its Black Seal Rum is seen behind bars all over the world.
Its broad flavor profile is dark yet smooth, with aromas of to ee, vanilla, and spices, balanced by a hint of charred oak and salinity. It is as comfortable in a classic dark ’n’ stormy—bringing together rum and ginger beer—as it is served neat in a tumbler, over ice.
Goslings has also taken to the high seas with its Spirited Seas Ocean Aged expression, by maturing barrels in the hold of a ship traveling between Bermuda and the United States—bringing a unique touch of the elements to the proceedings.
With all its historical connections, rum is a spirit of legacy, but also one with a hugely influential future. Thanks to its enduring versatility and feel-good, sunkissed soulfulness, it is a spirit that can transport a drinker to warmer climes with every sip, whether it’s being enjoyed in a basement bar in Manhattan or on the white sandy beaches of Bermuda… perhaps the ultimate statement of liquid wanderlust. • Neil Ridley is a writer and drinks expert whose work has appeared in Wallpaper, Decanter, and The Telegraph

Try this rich and fruity twist on a classic
Bringing together characterful dark rum and the sweet, fragrant notes of freshly baked banana bread, this tropical cocktail is moreish, unctuous, and deliciously drinkable
Ingredients
6 3⁄4 fluid ounces (200 ml) dark rum (Goslings Black Seal)
1 large slice banana bread
½ fluid ounce (15 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
½ fluid ounce (15 ml) Cointreau
1⁄3 fluid ounce (10 ml) sugar syrup
Method
To make the banana-breadinfused rum, put the Goslings

Add 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) of the banana-bread-infused rum to a cocktail shaker with the remaining ingredients, half fill with ice, and shake for 10-12 seconds before straining into a chilled coupe glass.
Once the base for the U.S. Consul General, this grand estate in Paget Parish, Bermuda, is now one of the island’s most exquisite private homes

Chelston is not an old estate, but it features large in the consciousness of generations of Bermudians and expat Americans who have made the tiny island their home. Built in the late 1930s, the property was, from 1964 until 1998, the U.S. Consul General’s official residence. Thus, it became the impressive backdrop to grand July 4th festivities to which thousands of islanders were invited over the years, for firework displays and picnics on its sprawling lawns.
Karin Sinclair of Sinclair Realty Bermuda Christie’s International Real Estate describes the property, built on the edge of the island’s capital, Hamilton, as “singular.”
“Bermuda is an absolutely glorious—albeit diminutive—island, just 21 square miles (54 sq km). Chelston’s 14-acre (5.7 ha) residential compound is, without question, a true rarity,” she says. “But those 14 acres also offer prime Grape Bay beachfront—think pink sand and turquoise waters—and you can walk into the city. It’s the best of all worlds.”
The main house, a generous 9,500 square feet (883 sq m), has a simple elegance—it is stunning but also very welcoming and comfortable. The walls have been specially treated in order to use wallpaper—Italian silk coverings in several rooms and, in the dining room, a design hand-painted in China. Such treatments are extremely unusual in Bermuda. There are timeless stone floors and gorgeous, custom-made fireplaces. The library even has its own aquarium with a living coral reef.
That’s just one of the houses. The current owners, who bought Chelston from the U.S. government in the late 1990s, chose it because it had three (now four) spacious cottages dotted over its grounds, which allowed their adult children and family friends to have their own space when visiting. Although smaller than the stately main house, each one is perfect for hosting guests in style.
But it is the views from the houses that will strike visitors lucky enough to be invited to the estate. “Even from the reception hall, the Atlantic Ocean views are a ‘wow,’” says Sinclair. “There is a deep, south-facing veranda off the living room. Open the French doors and you feel the sound of the sea.”
There is no shortage of people wanting to move to Bermuda. Its sub-tropical climate, beauty, excellent schools, and connections to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, as well as its business environment, make it attractive to wealthy buyers. Although it could sell to another family wanting the perfect, spread-out getaway (and, perhaps, a straightforward pathway to U.K. citizenship, too), there is also likely to be interest from corporate buyers.
Whoever buys it, the estate is full of memories for its realtor. When she was a young dancer, Sinclair’s New York ballet company visited Bermuda, where she was introduced to a Captain Sinclair and his wife at a reception at Chelston. They had a son, John, and… the rest is history. “Here we are 41 years later. We joke that our marriage was brokered at Chelston. And now, we’re brokering Chelston for sale,” she says. “I remember the feeling of Chelston’s scale and grandeur. I had never been in a home like it. It was heady.” It still is.

From a Med-side massage in Ibiza’s first premium “spaw” to five-star wellness in the UK’s most exclusive pet hotel, the rise in specialist canine care reflects just how far we’ll go for the love of dogs
t a handsome Georgian farmhouse hotel set atop Somerset’s heather- and gorse-fuzzed Quantock Hills, in the heart of the English countryside, guests desiring discretion and downtime check in for this restorative retreat’s Elysian levels of indulgence. There’s a pastoral peace in this idyllic spot, immortalized in verse by romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who wrote: “Oh! ’tis a quiet spirithealing nook!” after a walk among its deep valleys and dells. For visitors to this sybaritic sanctum, it is indeed this and much more. The happy residents of The Country Dog Hotel are of the canine variety, and bushy tailed members are blessed with boundless grooming, wellness, and enrichment possibilities to enjoy at their endless leisure.
Clients have faith that owners Rebecca Linnell and Michael Walton will treat their beloved to the very best in high-end hound hospitality. Love and care is lavished through muscle-soothing dips in a wood-fired spring-water tub, mud baths for coat conditioning, and blueberry facials to reduce tear staining. Then there’s the social calendar of woodland walks, beach days, outdoor cinema, paddleboarding, and boat trips—one of which was attended by George and Amal Clooney’s dog, Rosie, a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard. Other celebrity devotees include supermodel David Gandy, who has entrusted the couple with his little mixed-breed rescue, Dora. They were inspired to set up the hotel as they wanted something more than a basic kennel stay for their own pup. “I thought there might be others who also wanted a home away from home for their dogs while they’re away,” says Linnell, who has previously worked in rescue centers all over the world. “We were absolutely inundated with inquiries, and it went from strength to strength. Our clients now plan their vacations around our availability.”
Linnell is not alone in pioneering a more thoughtful approach to doggie welfare. There’s a surge in specialist groomers and therapists who blend traditional practices with modern expertise. Where a no-nonsense coat trim would once suffice, we now favor the finest in dog treatments that reflect the same attention to detail found in the best beauty salons around the world. Catering to every waggy whim, grooming technicians offer “pawdicures”; conditioning coat treatments; custom styling that cuts a dash; gentle body massage for circulation, digestion, and skin health; hydrotherapy for joint pain; and reiki, sound baths, and aromatherapy to reduce stress. F

The Country Dog Hotel is one of few dedicated dog hotels offering a vacation experience fit for a human. After being chauffeured to their boutique break in a Land Rover Defender, dog guests can snooze to their hearts’ content, enjoy a shea butter, coconut, and rose oil conditioning treatment, tuck into home-baked treats, and roam freely in a three-acre (1.2 ha) enclosure. Pet parents receive daily “pupdates.”

It’s a shift that shows just how deeply dogs have become intrinsic to family life. Man’s best friend has been promoted from loyal sidekick thrown the odd bone to cosseted main character whose personal hygiene, health, nutrition, and emotional needs are often prioritized before our own.
There’s no disputing that regular grooming is vital to a dog’s welfare, but how did it become commonplace for us to show our devotion through such flamboyant primping and preening?
A Harvard University brain-imaging study showed that our four-legged friends trigger similar neural pathways to the parent-baby bond, explaining our need to nurture and nanny our dogs. But the surge in dog ownership during the pandemic gave rise to the boom in luxury pet services. The estimated total spend on pets in the U.S. for 2025 is an astounding $157 billion.
Acknowledging the increasing need for pet-life balance, dog-friendly eateries welcome your plus one, daycare and boarding is crèche-standard, gourmet dog food boasts organic ingredients, companies offer new pet parents “pawternity leave,” and high-fashion houses such as Gucci, Celine, and Moncler have launched sartorial attire for dogs.
Instagram and TikTok have elevated our obsession with dogs to even greater heights, where four-legged fashion icons such as Doug the Pug and Jiffpom are pictured living their best life.
“Social media has played a huge role in letting people showcase their pets’ personalities and styles,” says Oli Port, founder of the world’s first dog fashion magazine Dogue. “Naturally, brands and services followed, and the luxury market responded.”
Port founded the magazine in 2019 as a passion project inspired by her own dogs—pomeranian rescue and original cover girl Mimi Bear and family dog Boss, a huge dogue de Bordeaux, who helped inspire the name. “I noticed how quickly dog fashion and pup culture were growing,” she says. “The rise of luxury dog lifestyles reflects how our relationship with pets has evolved. We’ve moved from simply ‘owning’ them to celebrating them. They’re no longer just pets—they’re family, companions, and even muses. We want to share the best parts of our lives with them, from wellness to fashion to travel.”
Indeed, travel companies and luxury hotel groups were early adopters of pet inclusivity. Dog-friendly establishments typically include plush dog F
Ibiza’s Dog Spaw offers a sand-to-spa wellness ritual in partnership with Charlie + Co Naturals— gentle cleansing, therapeutic paw massage, a soft coat refresh, and a finishing mist. Their Paws & Presence wellness retreat launches this year, offering sunrise yoga for humans and their pets. “For guests, their dog’s spa ritual is as essential as their own,” says Joanna Ramonell, director of marketing and communications.

beds, special menus, and branded accessories such as bathrobes and leashes as standard. Meanwhile, pet-dedicated private charter companies such as K9 Jets and Bark Air have redefined dog transportation with business-class prices, chaperones, and onboard paw massages.
Inevitably, attention has turned to even more prestige perks. London’s Bvlgari Hotel has a dedicated dog concierge with a little black book of premium pet services and the best walks. In nearby Mayfair, Brown’s Hotel offers discerning dog guests a Dog Tree Map to the neighborhood’s finest “relief spots” as well as gourmet treats made by chef Adam Byatt, whose restaurant, Trinity, holds a Michelin star. And Stateside, The Sanctuary Beach Resort in Monterey, California, is a mecca for fetch enthusiasts who can borrow from its stick library.
Some hotel hosts excel in curating canine vacations. Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay now has a Dog Spaw, where your best friend can bliss out with a pampering beauty session and massage. “Travel has evolved and so have the companions who come along for the journey,” says Joanna Ramonell, director of marketing and communications. “At Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, dogs aren’t just permitted, they’re embraced as part of our island family. When we unveiled the Dog Spaw four years ago, our first guests were not pedigree pups off private jets but rescue dogs from Sa Coma, Ibiza’s municipal shelter. Many had never felt a gentle touch, let alone experienced a day dedicated entirely to their joy. They arrived a little nervous and left with soft coats, relaxed paws, and hearts full of newfound trust. That single gesture sparked a partnership that has become one of our most meaningful contributions to the island—a reminder that hospitality can create real change.”
Is there anything we wouldn’t do for our four-legged friends? It seems not, as The Country Dog Hotel’s Linnell can attest. “We’ve had clients send their personal chefs to explain a dog’s exacting dietary requirements. We’ve been asked to put BBC Radio 4 on for a dog at certain times of the day. And one dog had to have their drinking water infused with strawberries first.”
Too much? Absolutely not, insists Linnell. “If there was a choice between the strawberry water or dealing with someone who is unkind to their dog, I would go with the strawberries every time.” • Donna Hardie-Scott is a property, lifestyle, and travel journalist who has written for Homes & Gardens, The Standard and The Observer

Guests are encouraged to bring every member of their family to Los Cabos, including the fourlegged kind. Pups can enjoy a neck massage to combat travel fatigue, stress-reducing spa treatments, a private beachside cabana, chefprepared meals, daily beach walks with a dogbutler, and “doga” classes. The resort can even throw a birthday party complete with petfriendly tacos, tostados, and empanadas.

Hong Kong is a city built on exclusivity—the most exciting gatherings are reserved for favored insiders. We reveal what elite living looks like here ong Kong doesn’t shout about its intrinsic grandeur. This is a city that has always understood discretion—not just in what you own, but in the events and spaces you’re invited to. A fashion fitting in a warehouse, a tasting inside a Michelin-starred kitchen, a party in a grand house that most people will never have heard of… exclusivity here isn’t about excess, but intimacy, access, and the art of knowing where to look. Here, we ask those in the know to reveal what elite living really looks like— Hong Kong style.

Architect, interior designer and founder, Steve Leung Design Group
In Hong Kong, it’s not about how big or how expensive a home is. It’s about whether it’s comfortable or cozy. People are moving away from buying homes or renovating just to show off.
We just completed the Swim Club at the Kimpton Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong hotel. As far as I know, there hasn’t been anything quite like this in Hong Kong before. At first, we thought just making it elegant and exotic would be enough—but we felt it needed to be more fun, with a bit of a retro vibe.
I like Club Bâtard at the Pedder Building, a heritage building. It occupies three floors, and there’s a wine cellar connecting all levels. I also go to the Hong Kong Golf and Tennis Academy in Sai Kung. It’s in a rural area, and is sizeable, with tennis, golf, and good restaurants. These clubs aren’t selling typical luxury. I’m talking about luxury redefined.
We are facing challenging times in many ways, but look at the success of Bar Leone, ranked number one in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2025. It is Hong Kong’s glory.
Chorusmaster, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra
I enjoy being able to experience the making of the arts behind the scenes. You see people who can sing, dance, play instruments; there are wonderful sets and production teams. It’s not common to participate in these behind-the-scenes moments, but sometimes, if you’re bold enough to ask, you might get in.
Performances take place at the Grand Hyatt’s Champagne Bar, where there are jazz concerts; Chi Lin Nunnery, which played host to opera related to Buddhist philosophies; and the heritage complex Tai Kwun’s open-air Laundry Steps.
Audiences in Hong Kong are not just looking to see big stars perform; they want more meaning behind the performance.

CEO and founder, Hula luxury fashion consignment platform
Hong Kong is a city known for making business connections due to the number of international visitors and its relevance in sectors such as finance and fashion. The people here are well-traveled, ambitious, and excited by new experiences. They are also extremely discerning, so the level of service, creativity, and personalization available has to be high.
I was invited to meet the fashion designer Christopher Esber, who had a pop-up, hosted by the fashion store Beaureguards, at Rosewood Hong Kong’s Glasshouse by Asaya Kitchen. It was a lunch with just 10 guests—very intimate and a wonderful way to chat and connect with Christopher and understand the ethos of the brand. I purchased his first design piece from when he was at school. That story became part of the experience, and something I’ll never forget.
At Hula, we recently relaunched our store in Quarry Bay, rebranding it as HUB. It’s a concept-store environment, which offers a unique space where those shopping for pre-owned fashion can have the same experience—if not better—than for first-hand fashion.
Gen Zers tell me they are only shopping for pre-owned fashion nowadays, as they enjoy the hunt and find interesting pieces. Craftsmanship and scarcity are key. F
Style and fashion content director, Vogue Hong Kong
Fashion is more accessible than exclusive in Hong Kong, but there have always been personal services for special customers.
At Landmark, there’s the Bespoke Lounge, where brands bring designs directly to the customer. Department store Lane Crawford is proud of its personal shopper styling experience. If you want pieces that are not in Hong Kong, they can fly them in.
There’s a rising trend of smaller brands having customers go directly to their showrooms. Demo, a gender-fluid brand, does ready-to-wear as well as semi-couture, customized designs for celebrities in concert, and designs for weddings—those require very personal shopping and fitting experiences. For occasionwear, and especially cheongsam [the traditional Chinese dress], there’s Sau Lee, which invites its customers to its warehouse.
One of the major events in Hong Kong is Art Basel. It’s all about exploring the city’s hidden spots. The Louis Vuitton event in 2025 was one for the books. A mansion on Po Shan Road was transformed into a huge party. By the pool, they had art by Takashi Murakami and a concert with the rapper JP The Wavy. You don’t really get that kind of house party in Hong Kong very often. F

Impeccable taste
(Clockwise from left) Roganic; Amber’s signature dish of red sea urchin, cauliflower, lobster, and Daurenki Tsar Imperial Caviar; Castle Road amenities.
Culinary director, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong
Roganic [the Michelin-starred Hong Kong outpost of the former London-based restaurant] is well-known for its focus on vegetables and local sourcing. I’ve loved many of its dishes, but in particular its local asparagus recipe, which is so rich in umami. The restaurant’s new location, opened in 2025, features an artful design of upcycled wood.
My aim has always been to create a true sense of place; a cuisine that reflects Hong Kong’s spirit of contrast and connection.
When we began work to reimagine the three-Michelin-starred French fine-dining restaurant, Amber, in 2019, we wanted to dissolve the usual boundaries between the dining room and the creative pulse of the kitchen. Midway through the tasting menu, our guests are invited behind the pass— through what we call the “wall of fame”— into the kitchen, where a dedicated course is prepared before their eyes. Our chefs introduce the ingredients, narrate their provenance, and demonstrate the refined techniques that define our culinary philosophy here.
Our ferments represent a quiet ritual of waiting and discovery, where restraint and respect for time yield flavors of remarkable depth. That patience, to me, is the ultimate expression of refinement.

In Hong Kong, developers are very clever. Whatever the initial plans are, they’ll craft a property into something special. They put thought into each one, sourcing amenities and features to elevate it.
At a new project down Castle Road at Mid-Levels, there is a gym bookable by residents, a private spa, a Jacuzzi—even a personal salon. There’s also a function room for entertaining guests.
At Mont Verra on Beacon Hill, some penthouses have private elevators. Upon entering the property, the driveway gives the feel of a five-star hotel—everything is pristine. It’s not just the hardware: their maintenance, staff, and approach are all five-star level. Some homes are so exclusive, the developers don’t entertain the average person for viewings. You have to be a known, reputable person. •

“People here are well-traveled, ambitious, and excited by new experiences.”

Nestled in a prestigious neighborhood, Mont Verra on Beacon Hill, Hong Kong, offers a new way of living in the city
Words GELA PERTUSINI
Historically, says realtor Samson Law of Christie’s International Real Estate Hong Kong, the predominantly low-rise villas in Kowloon Tong and Beacon Hill have one disadvantage. Since they were mainly constructed on relatively flat ground, these spacious residences lack the “wow” of a view that the apartments at the nearby, newly built Mont Verra development offer. Built into the hillside where urban Kowloon melts into the green slopes of Beacon Hill and Lion Rock, Mont Verra is unusual for this area in combining ample space with fabulous outlooks.
“The view is very sophisticated,” says Law. “There’s the mountain, the dynamic Victoria Harbour, and, in the evening, the whole city lights up. Because this development is slightly raised, you can experience the city without being part of the concrete jungle.”
The five apartment blocks have been built by Kerry Properties, the developers behind the Shangri-La hotel chain, and clearly they know their market. The apartment that Law is showing has been designed by Hong Kong interiors expert, Norman Chan. It whispers quiet luxury: marble bathrooms, beautiful inlaid floors, a fabulously equipped kitchen, staff quarters, and floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the view. Even on a lower level of the six-story blocks, you feel like the king of all that is surveyed. And it is exceptionally green—the development is gorgeously landscaped and there is the backdrop of the parkland hills.
But the real draw is the apartment’s proportions. Hong Kong is one of the least affordable cities in the world, notorious for its cramped accommodation. Indeed, Law says that 1,000 square feet (93 sq m) for a family apartment would be considered generous. This home weighs in at 4,400 square feet (409 sq m). “The developers were brave to build fewer but larger apartments,” says Law. “That’s unusual in Hong Kong.”
Some of the thinking behind building on such a grand scale must be the influx of wealthy business

people from mainland China who demand space. Nearly the entire development has been sold to these buyers, including the three standalone houses. Although the Hong Kong property market wobbled earlier in the decade, the steady flow of Chinese money has led to a recovery on the super luxury end.
Many of the apartments are second homes for those who have business interests in Hong Kong but live in China or other parts of Asia. There is also a contingent who have bought in order to send their children to the prestigious schools of Kowloon Tong, adding to the appeal of this special development. • HK$200,000,000, Christie’s International Real Estate Hong Kong, Samson Law, samson.law@ cirehk.com, +852 9023 9787

Discover avant-garde luxury in the heart of the Eternal City at this season’s must-visit hotel
Words JULIA ZALTZMAN

ZAHA HADID’S last hotel project is one of the most tantalizing new openings to hit the Italian capital. Just steps from bustling Piazza del Popolo, Hotel Romeo Roma brings majestic modernity to a renovated 16th-century palazzo. Rome’s classicism and sculptural landmarks are captured with innovative expression, bound together by the late starchitect’s signature fluid lines, vaulted ceilings, and a revolutionary “second skin” that fits inside the original structure, hiding the services and smart technology required for modern living and creating a captivating, curvaceous surface in the rooms.
As the second offering from Italian luxury hospitality group Romeo Collection (Romeo Massa Lubrense is slated to open soon), the five-star, 74-key hotel is a bastion of traditional innovation. Rooms boast customizable lighting, whirlpool tubs, hidden televisions, and private terraces set against a backdrop of
Carrara marble, lava stone, and Macassar ebony. In the five “noble-level” suites, original Renaissance frescos adorn the walls, one of which frames views over historic Via di Ripetta.
At the heart of the offering lies the internal courtyard, a verdant meeting point housing all-day dining, beverages, and a wellness area reserved exclusively for guests. Contemporary works by Mario Schifano, Mimmo Paladino, and Francesco Clemente draw the eye, while epicurean delights at Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Roma gratify the palate. Yet the palace’s most deeply rooted historical context comes from the ancient marble bust of Empress Livia Drusilla unearthed during the renovation, and the Roman relics discovered just below the building, now artfully displayed under the glass-bottomed pool.
Hotel Romeo Roma is more than a place to rest your head. It’s a dazzling spectacle that injects new vibrancy to the city.

Words STUART CODLING
Just two seconds can mean the difference between victory and defeat in the world of Formula 1 motor racing—we hit slo-mo for an in-depth view

erched on a rocky outcrop lapped by sapphire Mediterranean waves, covering a land area smaller than New York City’s Central Park, the Principality of Monaco sends its shoots high and its roots deep. Between the ever-growing tower blocks and the tunnels that channel traffic under the city, a tangle of streets clings to the surface of the rock like ivy.
These same streets have played host to the Monaco Grand Prix for almost a century. The surface is no longer compacted dirt and cobblestones criss-crossed by tramlines, and much of the built environment exists in a state of perpetual redevelopment, but the track layout remains almost identical to the one that race founder Antony Noghès arrived at after weeks of exploring on foot in the fall of 1928.
Every second counts in a motor race, not least in Monaco, where the narrowness of the streets makes overtaking virtually impossible, and perfect execution makes the difference between winning and losing. Three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet said racing a Formula 1 car at Monaco is “like riding a bicycle around your living room.” The first Monaco GP lasted four hours; today it is 78 laps rather than 100, lasting an hour and 40 minutes or so. A 2.074-mile (3.337 km) lap takes around 70 seconds. Here, we drill down further and look at two seconds that could make or break the race.
Modern F1 demands peak human performance to exploit its cutting-edge technologies. Every driver has a support system: a race engineer on the pit wall coordinating with factory-based strategists and a pit crew trained to change all four wheels in under three seconds. The cars can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph (97 kmh) in fractionally over two seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 200 mph (322 kmh). Each has more than 250 sensors monitoring every aspect of its performance, generating up to a terabyte of data over the course of a weekend.
Mission-critical data is transmitted live to the engineers on the pit wall, and via satellite to the operations center at the factory, at a rate of around 30 megabytes per lap—one every two seconds. Here the pre-race simulations are reshaped as the race evolves.
The most frenzied period of any Monaco GP is the phase around the pit stops, where overtaking opportunities arise. It’s an act of teamwork, an elaborate dance in which all involved must hit their marks. The task sounds simple enough: lose as little time as possible. For the driver that means going as fast as they can on the in-lap to the pits, executing a perfect stop for the wheel change, making a crisp getaway when they get the green light to leave again, then judging the grip available from the new tires for optimum speed on the out-lap.
Any operational slip here could mean losing places. That’s what makes the timing of the stops so important, and these decisions are based on a complex set of inputs. Most teams run a McLaren-developed system called Atlas, which helps them calculate where their car will feed out in relation to others after a stop.
That’s where we frame our two seconds. In every race, each driver must run two of the three available tire compounds – soft, medium, and hard, where durability is (theoretically) inversely proportional to speed. For the 2025 Monaco GP, racing’s governing body introduced an experimental rule mandating two pit stops per car, with the aim of injecting more strategic jeopardy. We join the race at the second round of pit stops—for the leading players, the last opportunity to shake up the order.

McLaren driver Lando Norris qualified on pole position, narrowly, from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and has led throughout. Norris’s teammate Oscar Piastri had a scrappy qualifying by his standards and, as the lap count enters the late 40s, is 15 seconds behind the leader and F

“Three-time
Piquet said racing a Formula 1 car at Monaco is ‘like riding a bicycle around your living room.’”
drifting backwards. Poised just one second behind him is Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the world champion.
Red Bull’s choice to start Verstappen on the hard-compound tires when the rest of the frontrunners set off on mediums has telegraphed their game plan. It’s a big bet: go deeper into the race before their first stop, then deeper still, so Verstappen takes the lead when the others make their second pit stops. Then dig in and hope for an on-track incident substantial enough for the race to be stopped, or paused behind the Safety Car, enabling Verstappen to lose less time, or none at all, making his second tire change.
This much was clear to the frontrunners’ strategists even before Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase—who speaks with the laconic air of an airline pilot—started coaching the driver on how best to preserve his tires. That half-megabyte of data per second includes the surface temperatures of the sensitive Pirelli rubber on each corner, and it’s been spiking as Verstappen spins his rear
wheels as he accelerates out of the hairpin: “Watch your rear tire slip exit Turn 6.”
May 25, 2025, 16:06:03
As the window for the second stops opens, it’s a case of who blinks first. McLaren brings Piastri in at the end of lap 48. He is too far behind Leclerc to be a threat, but McLaren wants him back on track ahead of Leclerc’s teammate Lewis Hamilton, who could hold him up.
Ahead, Norris is running into the unforeseen consequences of the two-stop rule: a train of eight cars led by 10th-placed Alex Albon, who is holding them up deliberately so his teammate can pit and rejoin without losing ninth. Cars that are about to be lapped by the leaders must move over but this still costs time.
“Waved blue flag for Car 22 (TSU) timed at 16:06:03” appears on the timing screen, showing that Verstappen’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda—car four in that clump of eight—has been signaled to get out of Norris’s way.
Leclerc usually prefers not to talk on the radio, while engineer Bryan Bozzi feeds him F
information in a businesslike tone. Bozzi has been reporting Norris’s lap times, mostly in the low one minute 14 seconds, and he says: “Norris 15.7 in traffic.” That’s all Leclerc needs to know.
The gap between Norris and Leclerc has shrunk from 6.3 seconds to 5.4 seconds. On their Atlas system, Ferrari’s strategists can see that in another lap Leclerc will run into the same traffic snarl-up. If he pits now, he will feed out into a relatively clear track.
At the first round of stops, the Ferrari pit crew turned Leclerc around in two seconds.
Norris was stationary for 0.8 seconds longer. A similar margin this time around could make Norris’s lead even more precarious.
May 25, 2025, 16:07:17
Leclerc is stationary for 2.2 seconds. As he leaves the pit lane, Albon is just letting Norris by further around the circuit. McLaren knows it has no choice but to stop now, or risk Leclerc passing while Norris is in the pits. It can also see Norris is likely to return to the track behind Verstappen. On the radio, engineer Will Joseph tries not to sound too urgent: “Leclerc has pitted… 100 percent pace,” he tells Norris.
“And push,” Lambiase tells Verstappen.
“Everything you’ve got, Max.”
One of the most important—and perilous— sections of the Monaco circuit is the Piscine (so named because the track skirts a swimming pool), which is the fast right-left of Turns 15 and 16, along with the left-right sweep that precedes it. Turn 15 is the most difficult corner on the Monaco lap because the fastest line through it requires the driver to skim the Armco barrier. A millimeter either way and you lose vital fractions of a second—or crash the car.
May 25, 2025, 16:07:52
Normally, the drivers can leave a margin here, but Norris cannot afford this. He must stem the time loss to Leclerc. This could be the most important two seconds of his race. Turns 13 and 14 require just careful aim and a feather of the
throttle to carry 143 mph (230 kmh) through the corner, increasing to 148 mph (238 kmh) as he drives parallel to the pool.
Then he begins lifting off the accelerator just before he hits the brakes, overlapping the movements so he is still 30 percent on the throttle as he is fully on the brake, deftly manipulating the inertial forces to help the car turn. As the apex of the corner looms, he flicks the gearshift twice, dropping from sixth to fourth. The engine revs fall from 11,200 to 9,000 as car speed reaches its slowest point through the corner: 71 mph (115 kmh). Norris is a controlled whirl of activity: as he steers left out of Turn 16 he starts applying the throttle before releasing the brakes, to help rotate the car. Within 10 milliseconds of each movement, the data has reached the pit wall for later review.
During this two-second snapshot, the carbon brake discs have glowed red hot at a peak of 1,472 degrees Fahrenheit (800°C), the car has traveled nearly 330 feet (100 m), and the engine’s crankshaft has rotated more than 300 times. In the McLaren garage, the pit crew removes the next set of tires from the blankets in which they’ve been heated to 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70°C). Thirteen seconds behind, Verstappen is in the tunnel under the Fairmont hotel, pushing to make sure he is ahead when Norris leaves the pits.
All of this goes unseen on the international TV feed, where the director has been distracted by Mercedes’ George Russell missing the chicane while trying to force his way past Albon. In a flurry of speed McLaren’s pit crew services Norris in 2.2 seconds and, as he returns to the track, Joseph reassures him he is ahead of Leclerc, while Verstappen is already in Turn 1.
“You’re doing great, mate,” says Joseph. “Obviously Verstappen will try to hang it out for a VSC [Virtual Safety Car] or worse.”
“Settle in, Max,” Lambiase tells Verstappen. Verstappen has the race lead—for now… • Stuart Codling is Grand Prix editor of Autosport and the author of Art of the Formula 1 Race Car

Christie’s experts explore the poetry and craftsmanship of Claude Lalanne’s “Ginkgo” dining suite, which celebrates the magic of nature in its leaf-shaped design

Celebrated for their ingenious hippo baths, dove armchairs, and crocodile tables, François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne brought a witty insouciance to French interior design. At their sprawling estate in Ury, the duo conjured up their fantastical creations.
While Les Lalanne exhibited under their collective name, their work was, in fact, entirely separate. François-Xavier took his inspiration from the animal kingdom. Claude found hers in the couple’s garden, collecting leaves and flowers that she would bring back to her foundry to cast.
“I dream while waking,” Claude once said of her practice, and there is a kind of idiosyncratic obsession and radiant wonder to the way the sculptor operated. Inside her hot, sulfurous studio laden with glass beakers and apparatus for distilling, condensing, and purifying, Claude would submerge leaves, butterfly wings, crab claws, even a dead rat, into an electrically

that her “fine sculptor’s hands seem to disperse the fog of mystery to reach the shores of art.”
One of the sculptor’s recurring themes was the ginkgo leaf, something she associated with magic and enchantment. She used the distinctive fan-shaped leaf to embellish mirrors, jewelry, and furniture. Among her most sought-after creations is the ginkgo-leaf dining suite, which she produced in bronze and aluminum.
Sold on June 5, 2025 at Christie’s in London was a suite of rare examples of this style in a chartreuse green. “It is highly unusual,” says Agathe de Bazin, head of Design at Christie’s in Paris. “When you think of an edition, you imagine something that is mass-produced and identical, but that was not the case with the Lalannes. They lavished care on every piece. These have been beautifully painted.”
They came from The Collection of Baron Diego von Buch, a financier who acquired the “Ginkgo”

charged bath of copper sulfate, creating exact replicas through the process of electroplating.
These objects would then be combined into surreal formulations such as a cabbage with chicken’s feet or a thumb protruding from a snail’s shell: beguiling sculptures instilled with a supernatural charm. It is no surprise to learn that Claude’s father was an alchemist.
Born in 1925, Claude studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École des Arts Décoratifs, and met her husband at an exhibition of his work in 1952. They began collaborating soon after. By the late 1960s, no chic Parisian address was complete without one of François-Xavier’s sheep sculptures, known as the Moutons de laine.
Claude was the more enigmatic of the two, her art driven by a desire to investigate the workings of nature. Because the universe is strange, she used unorthodox methods to decode it, treating the natural world as a riddle requiring sculptural exegesis. Yves Saint Laurent once said of Claude

dining table, set of six chairs, bench, and four armchairs for his home in the south of France.
Baron von Buch was one of many international admirers of Les Lalanne: the couple had enjoyed a strong following around the world ever since their 1966 exhibition with the Greek-American gallerist Alexander Iolas in Paris. Critics, however, were unsure how to categorize these humorous outsiders who made a rhinoceros that housed a desk, bar, and safe and put mouths on apples.
Ten years later, another outlier put Claude’s sculpture L’Homme à tête de chou (The man with the head of a cabbage) on the cover of his concept album of the same name. Like the artist, Serge Gainsbourg was a nonconformist who could be willfully opaque. Today it is acknowledged that the Lalannes’ influence on art and design has been wide-ranging. Indeed, it seems impossible to imagine a sculpture by Jeff Koons or a design by Alessi without them. As de Bazin observes, “They brought joy to the world.” •

Home to the Bajau Laut, Wakatobi in Indonesia is an unspoiled oceanic paradise

that is even more beautiful than the blockbuster sci-fi movie its people inspired

Deep connections
e approach the two men by tender, motoring slowly to prevent throwing them off balance in their narrow lepa-lepa fishing boat. They have the sun behind them, silhouetted against the glistening Banda Sea. Lauda, the older of the two, casually sucks on a roll-up cigarette, his other hand wrapped tightly around a long hand-carved wooden fishing spear. His white soccer shorts whip about in the breeze as he watches us draw near, bemused by our mounting fascination.
We met both men earlier that morning aboard our Indonesian phinisi yacht, Rascal, anchored not far from their stilt village of Sampela on Hoga Island. They told us tales of growing up among the Bajau Laut, their seafaring community, which has lived within the remote Wakatobi Regency in the Southeast Sulawesi province of Indonesia for more than 1,000 years. Lauda, a father of two, doesn’t know his exact age but estimates it to be around 50. He’s become something of a hero in his village as one of the few to have traveled beyond their string of islands, and the only one to venture outside of Indonesia.
The Bajau have long relied on fishing and the trade of shellfish, sea cucumbers, and pearls with other communities for their survival. This daily lifestyle has honed their unique free-diving skills, leading to the development of larger spleens that enable them to hold their breath for longer periods of time. In his youth, Lauda could stay underwater for 15 minutes at depths of 60 feet (18 m).
“Now I’m not as fit,” he says, though his athletic torso suggests otherwise.
Back on the tender we ready our scuba masks and fins, check our air supply, and flip backwards over the side of the boat. As I sink beneath the surface of the water I keep my eyes fixed on Lauda. He dons a pair of bottle-glass F

goggles carved from mango wood and nosedives into the salty sea. As he swims down towards the seabed his body takes on a seal-like quality, gliding through the water. When he reaches the sharp, craggy reef bed, he maneuvers himself upright and begins a steady barefoot march across the jagged coral. He’s completely at home in this silent, submerged wilderness. Only the occasional bubble slipping from his mouth reminds me of the very real danger.
Wakatobi’s name is taken from the first two letters of the region’s four main islands—Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. It’s a biodiversity hotspot within Indonesia’s Coral Triangle, established as a Marine Conservation Area in 1996 then designated a National Park in 2002. The Bajau Laut’s unique diving abilities inspired filmmaker James Cameron to make 2022’s Avatar: The Way of the Water, yet the Bajau fly under the radar, in part due to their sprawling stateless existence, but also the sheer remoteness of this corner of the world.
While the country’s 17,000-plus wild islands have seen Indonesia top the list of must-visit yachting destinations over the past decade, with Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park becoming firm favorites, experiential travel company Rascal Voyages’ decision to make Wakatobi its newest charter destination is understandable. “You won’t encounter any other yachts during your stay,” says Yeray Moreno, Rascal Voyages’ head of experiences and conservation. “It’s like having the entire national park to yourself.”
We boarded our yacht off the coast of Bau Bau on Buton Island, before cruising overnight to anchor in Pulau Ular. The next morning, we had our first taste of island paradise; a cocooned beach set up with loungers, parasols, and a barbecue on the sizzle. Over the next seven days, we rose each morning to steaming bowls of nasi goreng before setting off with Moreno and Rascal Voyages’ resident marine biologist, Lisa D’Silva, to explore dive spots. We took in drift dives, plunging drop offs, and vast walls of cabbage coral sheltering giant lobsters and moray eels. I lost count of the sightings of barracuda, turtles, and bluespotted rays as we glided over plateaus, immersed in the big blue.
The region’s marine-rich, shallow reefs make shore diving and snorkeling worthwhile pursuits, though the superior dive sites around Tomia and WangiWangi make the case for visiting by boat. Returning to the comfort of our phinisi was not lost on me. Hand-built by Sulawesi craftsmen out of ironwood and teak, Rascal is a modern interpretation of the original two-masted schooners built to operate as sailing cargo vessels. As with the rest of the fourstrong fleet, Rascal’s traditional masts and sails have been omitted to accommodate larger guest suites, making it feel more akin to a floating villa.
Our third day, anchored off Tomia, brought the thrill of a night dive. I plunged into the warm water, torch in hand and, to my delight, opened my eyes to a world of nocturnal life; mantis shrimp scuttling out of their burrows and rainbow-hued flatworms drifting towards my light. Under D’Silva’s instruction we switched off our torches and swam about in awe as the enveloping blackness transformed into a glittering cloud of luminous phosphorescence.
As predicted by Moreno, our only interactions outside of the Bajau was with a passing fishing boat whose fresh catch we dined on that same evening. Entertainment came in the form of jungle hikes, stargazing, and live music from the crew. Our final night delivered a candlelit dinner on the beach, with the glinting oil lamps from Sampela village twinkling on the horizon. Sampela is one of the original and least developed Bajau Laut settlements, yet Lauda still manages to subsidize his fishing income with a humble homestead. For those who venture this far, Wakatobi offers a glimpse into a way of life shaped entirely by the sea, and perhaps a reflection of what it means to belong to it. • Julia Zaltzman writes for Robb Report and Centurion, and is editor of SuperYacht Industry

Words EMMA JOHNSTON
A PRECIOUS AQUAMARINE jewelry box glittering in the Thai sun—this stunning villa’s beautiful terraces and elegant interiors are worthy of a pirate’s plunder, and the seascape stretches out to the horizon. Designed by Philippe Starck and Jean-Michel Gathy, the five-bedroom residence reflects the tranquility of the panorama, with a spa, sauna, and infinity-edge swimming pool
inviting relaxation, and an outdoor dining pavilion ideal for sharing those amazing views of limestone islands, secluded beaches, and hidden coves—all within easy reach—with friends and family. • THB 339,200,000, Christie’s International Real Estate Thailand, Chinnatatt Sirichanachai, christiesrealestatethailand.com, chinnatatt@christiesrealestatethailand.com, +66 849 229 666
