Professional Growth Plan Goals Goal 1: To increase my knowledge and familiarity with the University of Cambridge’s International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Combined Sciences syllabus The reason that I chose this goal is that it:  Represents new challenges and learning  Inspires me to reflect on the teaching and learning process  Is doable and useful  Aligns with a standard in the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard Knowledge, Skill or Attribute in the Teaching Quality Standard Related to Alberta Education Interim Professional Certificate holder The purposes of the Guide to Education and programs of study germane to the specialization or subject disciplines they are prepared to teach. They know how to use these documents to inform and direct their planning, instruction and assessment of students The importance of career-long learning. They know how to assess their own teaching and how to work with others responsible for supervising and evaluating teachers. They know how to use the findings of assessments, supervision and evaluations to select, develop and implement their own professional development activities Outcome(s) expected to be achieved this year. • • • •

Delivery of syllabus aligned instruction to all IGCSE students Expansion of practical and laboratory skills Increase student understanding of science within an international context Enrichment resource for students motivated to expand their scientific knowledge

How will this goal be accomplished? Professional Development Strategies • Enroll in IGCSE Chemistry (0620) Introductory Professional Development Course –September 2009 • Curriculum Study- Review and study IGCSE Combined Sciences Syllabus – Ongoing • Review Skolverket (Swedish Curriculum) and IGCSE Combined Sciences curriculum for areas in need of enrichment –Ongoing • Discussion with colleagues and other teachers teaching the syllabus through on-line forums –Ongoing • Purchase and use Cambridge International Examinations-endorsed textbooks – August Positive role accomplishing this goal will have on students: • • •

Increase student achievement on IGCSE examinations Enriched lessons that are more challenging Have new opportunities to solve practical scientific problems

Goal 2: To increase my teaching and implementation of inquiry-based activities, specifically through the use of practical and laboratory scientific activities The reason that I chose this goal is that it:  Represents new challenges and learning  Inspires me to reflect on the teaching and learning process  Is doable and useful  Aligns with a standard in the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard Knowledge, Skill or Attribute in the Teaching Quality Standard Related to Alberta Education Interim Professional Certificate holder All students can learn, albeit at different rates and in different ways. They know how (including when and how to engage others) to identify students’ different learning styles and the way students learn. They understand the need to respond to differences by creating multiple paths of learning for individuals and groups of students, including students with special needs. There are many approaches to teaching and learning. They know a broad range of instructional strategies appropriate to their area of specialization and the subject discipline that they teach, and know which strategies are appropriate to help students achieve different outcomes.

The purposes of student assessment. They know how to assess the range of learning objectives by selecting and developing a variety of classroom and large scale assessment techniques and instruments. They know how to analyze the results of classroom and large scale assessment including provincial assessment instruments, and how to use the results for the ultimate benefit of students.

Implementation of minimum weekly lab activities Increase student exposure and practice with the scientific method Create grade lab manuals encompassing weekly activities and divided based on subject being studied Implement use of student lab notebooks Focus on the use and application of the scientific method Use more assessment of practical skills and techniques

How will this goal be accomplished? Professional Development Strategies • Book study of Using Science Notebooks in Elementary Classrooms by Michael P.Klentschy (NSTA Press)- September 2009 • Book study Teaching and Assessing Practical Skills in Science by David Hayward (Cambridge International Examinations)- October 2009 • Internet research of inquiry-based programs – Ongoing • Action research and collaboration with colleagues at weekly department meetings- Ongoing • Peer discussion and reflection- Ongoing Positive role accomplishing this goal will have on students: •

Students will develop the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry, for solving problems, for communicating scientific ideas and results, for working collaboratively and for making informed decisions (Alberta Program of Study 2003) Development of increased student interest and enthusiasm for science and scientific inquiry Development of students’ mutual respect and understanding that science arises from the collaboration of individuals Students will glean important understanding of proper lab safety and how to properly handle potentially harmful chemicals and materials

Goal 3: To improve on use of technology in the classroom. The reason that I chose this goal is that it:  Represents new challenges and learning  Inspires me to reflect on the teaching and learning process  Is doable and useful  Aligns with a standard in the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard Knowledge, Skill or Attribute in the Teaching Quality Standard Related to Alberta Education Interim Professional Certificate holder The functions of traditional and electronic teaching / learning technologies. They know how to use and how to engage students in using these technologies to present and deliver content, communicate effectively with others, find and secure information, research, word process, manage information and keep records. Outcome(s) expected to be achieved this year. • • • • • • •

Install overhead projectors in both science labs Implement more PowerPoint presentations Increase use of online resources such as webquests, applets, simulations and games to aid in student understanding Teach students the proper research skills commensurate with good scientific practice Help students use Excel to properly graph and create other visuals to communicate their collected data Attach weekly lesson plans to SchoolSoft for students and their parents / guardians Input student achievement and grades into SchoolSoft, to increase the flow of information with students and parents / guardians

How will this goal be accomplished? Professional Development Strategies • Order and speak to IT representatives to ensure timely installation of digital projectors- August 2009 • Internet research of credible and appropriate resources to use for differentiated instruction to students of all learning types- Ongoing • Conduct structures lessons in the computer room to show students how to properly use Excel, Word and PowerPoint to deliver information to othersOngoing

• To input more information on SchoolSoft software- Ongoing Positive role accomplishing this goal will have on students: • Clearer communication with parent • Further tool to aid with student organization and time management • Allows for more differentiated instruction and ability to meet more varied learning types • Encourage more student involvement in their educatiom

Goal 4: To continue to reflect, improve and expand use of clear criteria-based assessment in all classes. The reason that I chose this goal is that it:  Represents new challenges and learning  Inspires me to reflect on the teaching and learning process  Is doable and useful  Aligns with a standard in the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard Knowledge, Skill or Attribute in the Teaching Quality Standard Related to Alberta Education Interim Professional Certificate holder The purposes of student assessment.
