FINALS: WEEK 1

As we take a breath and prepare for what is sure to be a rip snorter finals series, let’s take a look back at was the tightest Shield season in its six year history. The Shield welcomed new team Ax to fold and also brought back the AFL Ambassdaor side Crawf’s Crew in replace of demoted 3RiversFLOODXPERT and Richo’s Greats. The Ax came with a mighty reputation, but found out what a tough competition this is, having to rely on a round 17 victory to guarantee their place in the top 8. And of course, we had the now customary team name changes over the summer, with Funny Old Fellow, Choose 1982, Dank’s Peptides and Franga’s Gurus all playing under a different moniker this season. The Commissions graphic designer looks forward to another raft of changes next year to keep him employed. As always drama continued to follow powerhouse side Wolfpak, who needed a last round victory against the Pies to sneak into the finals and remain as the only side never to miss a final series in Shield history (in fact they have made four of the five Shield Grand Finals). And their annual sparring partner, FOF also caused headlines with their late season ladder slide amidst tanking allocations in round 17 which were quietened by the fact they won the game. Other points of interest during the year were the Shield’s first ever draws in round 7 & 9 and the Tomsies fall from grace which saw them go from top of the ladder at the end of round 12 to ninth and a Gumby final appearance after they lost 4 of their last 5 games to miss the chance at defending their crown. Over the next 4 weeks will determine a new Shield Champion with eight teams all prepare for the ultimate glory—but only 1 will reign supreme!

SHIELD FINALS: WEEK 1 PREVIEW 1ST QUALIFYING FINAL The Hangovers –v- Hammers The Minor Premiers start their finals campaign against a side who has entered the top 4 with little fanfare. The Hammers have won 7 of their last 8, but 6 of those victories were against sides who finished outside the top 8. However, the most important point is that they comfortably beat the Hangovers in their only meeting in round 6. The Hangovers will want to win first up to help avoid the curse. Dunwich says HANGOVERS by 70.

1ST ELIMINATION FINAL Funny Old Fellow –v- Wolfpak Two old foes meet again, this time with everything on the line. Wolfpak were all but gone from the finals race, but some favourable results and a good last round win against the Pies sees them front up for their sixth consecutive finals appearance. FOF did everything they could to throw the game against Choose to avoid this clash, so you have to say that would make their supporter nervous. This is becoming Hawthorn –v-Geelong like with the Pak Cats most definitely the Cats. Dunwich says WOLFPAK by 20.

2ND ELIMINATION FINAL Ax –v- Pulsating Pies Ax came into the Shield with a world beater reputation, but have found that this is no easy road to riches. They showed their class early, but by mid-season were in a dog fight for the last spots in the 8. Won in round 17 to make it to fifth, but a loss could have easily seen them finish outside the 8.The Pies made a couple of Preliminary finals a few years back, but have nothing of note since 2009. They need to make a statement. Dunwich says PIES by 50.

2ND QUALIFYING FINAL Moorooduc Mudcrabs -v- Blue Baggers The Mudcrabs have screamed into Premiership favouritism on the back of some great form in the last 2 months of the competition. On paper they had the hardest draw coming home of all the finals contenders, buy they negotiated it with easy and must be confident. The Baggers have again put themselves in a winning position after last year’s Minor Premiership and will be desperate to kick of their finals campaign with a win here. The prize is a great one for the winner and both will put up a worthy fight. Dunwich says MUDCRABS by 80.
