The city offers a public transport system for which expansion is planned, with the construction of a railway system. The thesis, after analyzing the ur ban structure, the existing and planned infrastruc ture system, and the mobility questions proposes design solutions to improve the quality of cycle-pe destrian connections between the island and the mainland, to support forms of active mobility and sharing. The proposed project aims to affect the strong car-dependency, improving current trans port conditions and proposing new solutions for active and shared mobility in Abu Dhabi.

The road and motorway network is particularly de veloped, so much so that it strongly influenced the dependence on the car.

The Link Abu Dhabi, UAE

The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dha bi, is a rapidly growing international metropolis. The important urban development implies the need to provide highly performing infrastructures and ser vices for mobility, capable of guaranteeing ac cessibility both locally and on a regional scale, in particular as regards the public transport system.

As the population started to grow, the urban footprint expand ed from Abu Dhabi island into the mainland. As more roads were formed, the car became the main mode of transport across the two bodies (the island and the mainland) since oil is the country’s main resource, with highspeed motorways acting as walls that shape the existing and forecasted districts in the mainland. The current situ ation of Abu Dhabi’s landuse has a high coverage in residential buildings in many areas, especially in the mainland, be ing isolated from services and commercial facilities which are mainly concentrated in the northern part of the island. The southern part of the mainland, the major of landuse is for industri al facilities. It is very monofunctional and lacks of public spaces, ser vices, sports areas. The areas is also low in greenery comparing to the size of the area.

A pedestrian bridge with a spiral ramp is added as an extension to Mussafah Bridge with a red cycling path inspired by the term “Le Fil Rouge” with vegetation to continue the green footprint over the waterbody with benches overlooking main attractions and landmarks.

Focus Areas: The Bridge Along & The Bridge Across

The pedestrian bridge across will link both sides of Al Maqtaa area over the motorway that is splitting it to connect the two bus stops which act as a collecting point for the bus network between Abu Dhabi’s Island and Mainland improving public transport. It will also connect Al Qana, newly opened attraction, overlooking the canal.

Focus Areas: Linking with the Community 1

The Sports Park helps to connect the residential districts along with the attractors by creating an active area with various pitch es and sports, creating a destination for the community and link them together while encouraging a healthier lifestyle.

Being in a residential area that close to hospitals and schools, the playground can become a healthy factor for the kids to meet in a still be safe away from cars with the trees helping to keep po tential loud noises from disturbing the residents at the same time.

Since the site is covered with trees, bioswale systemis added to collect excess irrigation water, waste water, and rain water to be filtered and treated at the wetland giving a possiblity for a new unique ecosystem to form where a connection to nature is established.

Abu Dhabi’s original inhabitants were “Bedouins” who were Arab nomads travelling through the des ert which is still the other natural scene away from the coasts of the city and acts as an integral part of Abu Dhabi’s identity. The national tree, Ghaf, rep resents resiliency since it withstands the harsh heat and aridity of the desert.

The Bedouins used to settle around the oasis with their family and tribes that formed their community, which was a body of fresh water where they could plant their date palms, raise their cattle mainly sheep and camels. The date palm was and is still one of the main ways to assure food security in the gulf, since it’s a plant that grew and prospered in the desert and was the source of energy.

Focus Areas: Linking with Nature & Linking with Identity

The concept is inspired by the Dutch movement, De Stijl (1917), in which it proposed ultimate sim plicity and abstraction through which artists could express a Utopian idea of harmony and order es tablishing through a reduction of elements to pure geometric shapes and primary colors.

The facades are designed to look like the house of Gerrit Rietveld with the iconic corner window, colorful wooden panels as shutters for the win dows, creating some sort of privacy and security depending on the function.

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the MAST into a new and appealing building in order to increase the vibrance to the southern part of Rho and to make the main street busier.

The project focuses on several sustainable architectural approach in different seasons to maximize the use of solar enegry. By setting the height of the window through calculating the lowest solar elevation angle in wintertime, many rooms will have the optimal sunshine duration. Meanwhile, the design could help re duces energy consumptiom and utilitie costs.

3. Ecosystem & Green Strategy Analysis & Design Cremona Rural Line Cremona, Italy The Cremonese landscape at the center of the projects was developed to put together ideas to improve and preserve the greenery around Cre mona, starting with the enhancement of histori cal elements. From Cremona center to the Po and the green belt network, these are routes that become inter esting if there are nodes which can also be farm houses, but taking into account the variety, you cannot make all farmhouses a restaurant and a museum. Fantasy is needed to bring together lo cal interests, economic sustainability and the res toration of a landscape that is healthy.
