LITTLE SHELTER ANIMAL RESCUE & ADOPTION CENTER FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS DOG: DIET INSTRUCTIONS: These instructions are to be used as a guideline. A follow up with your vet is strongly suggested. Congratulations on the new addition to your family! May you enjoy many years together. Beginning a new life in a new home can sometimes be quite stressful. Do not be too concerned if your new dog/pup is not interested in eating for a day or two. If after two days the dog/pup has not started to eat, or at any time the dog/pup is lethargic, vomiting or having diarrhea, contact us immediately at (631) 368-8770. An important aspect of caring for your new dog/pup involves a well-balanced nutritional diet. All of the dogs/pups that reside at Little Shelter are fed Science Diet. Many store bought brands contain fillers and additives, (Dog Chow, Kibbles-N-Bits, Puppy Chow, etc.) which can be harsh on the animal’s stomach. We recommend that you continue with Science Diet, which is what the dog/pup was fed while with us, or switch to another high quality food such as Eukanuba, Iams, Nutramax, Pro Plan, etc. With these higher quality diets, less food is required because they contain fewer fillers. Plus, the stool will be smaller and easier to clean up. If you choose to switch to another food, please follow the instructions below. If you switch the diet too quickly, the dog/pup may get an upset stomach and/or diarrhea.
FEEDING TIMES/FREQUENCY Eight weeks to six months: Pups in this age range should be fed 3x daily, morning, midday, and evening, in order to maintain their fast metabolism and growth. They should be fed dry kibble mixed with canned food. The amount of food is determined by the size of the puppy. During their stay at Little Shelter, all pups under the age of eight months are fed Science Diet Canine Growth. Six months and up: Pups/dogs that are six months and older should be fed 2x daily, morning and evening. They should be fed dry kibble mixed with canned food. The amount of kibble varies depending upon the size of the dog/pup. During their stay at Little Shelter, all dogs/pups nine months and up are fed Science Diet Canine Maintenance. If the adult dog that you have adopted is underweight, we recommend feeding 3x daily until they reach their desired weight as designated by your vet. Then switch to feeding 2x daily. All adult dogs should be fed 2x daily for the remainder of their lives. It is better to give them two small portions 2x daily, then one large serving once daily, which can cause bloat and physical problems.
